You shouldn't have to buy a hard drive and you don't have to. Most downloadable games are only a couple hundred meg and i doubt any family or dedicated gamer, would choose downloading retail games over the physical copy. Especially when the price is usually in favour of the physical copy to begin with.

You are correct mate. I should have mentioned that it must be formatted to WiiU's File System. I do believe you can set a partition however if you still need to use the HDD on a PC or something akin.
You just plug it into the USB ports, depending on the hard drive you're using. Nintendo recommends using a HDD that has an external power supply. However, i have had no problems what so ever with using an external USB HDD ( http://goo.gl/pA3NOH) with a USB-Y Cable like this: http://goo.gl/j7V3NO - Little end goes in HDD and the 2 USB's go into the back ports of my WiiU.
From what im aware there hasn't been a Nintendo game yet which has content held back for DLC. Correct me if im wrong. They're quite open about how MK8 and Smash DLC is taking so long to come because they're still making it. That to me is good DLC. So i dont see why they'd hold back stuff thats already developed, whilst they are still developing the game itself.
