I hate to point out the obvious, but Hitachi just announced the BD-100, which is a 100 GB BR disk. This disk is also readable with a simple firmware update to existing BR players, including the PS3. Therefore, Blu-Ray actually has almost double the capacity as HD-DVD. Please don't knock people for doing their research.

But BC is not gone. So why make such a big issue about something that still exists? Sony is still supporting BC on the premium of the the two models. I'm having a hard time understanding the logic here. If people were complaining about price, and they received their price break, why not be happy about it. If they didn't care about the price, then go for the all-inclusive package.

To me it's like complaining to BMW that the M3 is too expensive, so they make a 328 and people comp...

I agree that most people waiting for the price drop are people that are currently fueling the PS2. If you want a different angle to the arguement, you can also say that Sony is sending a message to their loyal consumers that we don't expect you to pay for something you already own. Let's say there are still 70 Million PS2 still out there in the market which are used by gamers (I'll give you a huge cushion for people that don't play anymore). Sony is saying that if you want to re-purchase the ...

I don't neccessarily agree. First and foremost, Sony is providing gamers with the opportunity to buy BC. The 60Gb version still contains BC. Also, if you notice the price difference between the 2 SKUs is $100 which is the price of the PS2 come this holiday season. So no gamer is actually left without the option of paying for it. When the PS3 came out everyone from opposing camps screamed that the inclusion of Blu-Ray was unneccessary. Sony stuck with it, since games are published on that form...

I've read people's post concerning PSN vs. XBL and your question regarding the PSN service. First and foremost, a way to approach the picture is that PSN is a lot newer than XBL. In short, XBL has had time to grow, and that is what seperates XBL from PSN. It is not better because XBL costs $50 and PSN is free. Rather, PSN is still growing in size and Sony updates weekly by adding content to PSN. I personally see the immense potential of PSN, especially with Sony's video/music content (Sony Pi...

I never said which one is good or bad, I merely pointed out that upscaled is different than native. That's it.

AWESOME pick. Don't forget Offroad. Oh the nostalgia.

Love the list of games to come. Looks good for the future of gaming.

Upscaled to 1080p doesn't mean it's running at a native resolution.

Exactly what are you saying? PS3 just happens to be gaming machine and a Blu-Ray player in one. Therefore, one can deduce that if all the other BR players in the world can accept this new disk with a firmware update, so can the PS3. Logical?

Clarification: The HD-DVD add on can be used for games, but MS won't, because they don't want to alienate certain consumers that have the drive and the masses that don't. It's capable, just not a practical option for MS right now.

True. And Sony has already announced that PSOne games are backwards compatible on the new system. Personally, I think Sony said no BC for PS2 on the 40Gb to sell off the 60Gb model in Europe and then they will add the feature with a firmware update next year. Everyone is arguing that the GS is missing, but I think Sony can overcome this and emulate the games, via software. Frankly, I don't think it's a big deal.

Completely agree.

SONY: Ask the author of this article 1 question, exactly when was DVD-9 supposed to be phased out, in 5-7 years from now? Someone had to take the plunge and Sony did it, so now it's a mistake. I don't think this author realizes the implication for Sony if Blu-Ray wins this format war. Sadly, if MS was the one to incorporate HD-DVD in their system, and Sony stayed with DVD, then this article would be calling MS's decision a mistake. This author just doesn't get...

Granted 1080p is not main stream. I also believe that HD will become more of less mainstream after this holiday season. If price is any indication, the purchase price of HD technology has drastically decreased over the past few years and you are now seeing sub-$1000 TV's from major manufactures (i.e., Samsung, Sharp, Sony, etc.) Therefore I have a few questions. If you are to build a product, with a life expectancy of 7-10 years, wouldn't you incorporate the future mass market technology? If ...

I rarely agree with you, but I think we can agree on this. To say that Halo 3 didn't sell systems is ridiculous. It's moved units, or course. However, did it do what MS wanted it to do? That has yet to be seen. The problems with the analysis of Halo 3 vs. system sales is that most people that are devout Halo fans have already purchased an X360. Second, those who waited for Halo 3, likely recently purchased there system. That means that there are sales generated by Halo 3 (hence the spike in s...

I completely agree. Also, did Sony actually say no BC. It looks like the article just places that there, and then uses a vague quote to justify it. Perhaps Sony was referring to the actual Emotion Engine? If the Emotion Engine is gone from this model, not a big deal. I think software emulation will do just fine for the causal gamer that will use this systems for all around purposes.

6083d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Most likely, all Sony referred to was that they are discontinuing the actual hardware from this model to reduce costs. This will allow software emulation to read PS2 games. I can't imagine to be difficult (or even cost prohibtive) for Sony not to add the software emulation in this new model. However, the software foes not gaurentee the equal amount of games like the chip does, but the difference is not much. So hang tight and let's hear it from Sony. After reading the article, it's still not ...

If you read my post correctly, it states clearly that Sony/Nintendo HAVE invested in many products with developers. I was merely stating that my concern comes from the unorthodox amounts of money that MS is spending to get their exclusives. These astronomical amounts are unprecedented, which cannot be denied. My post is not a Sony vs. MS post. It's a post comparing MS vs. Sony/Nintendo vs. gaming industry vs. consumer. Please read my post before jumping to conclusions. All your answers are in...

I beg to differ . . . First and foremost, the article is more about price than anything. I will even take away Sony's experience in the gaming industry for arguement's sake. The main difference is the 2007 consumer vs. the 1993 consumer. In 1993, $699 was an astronomical figure. In a time when a $200 console seemed like a luxury item, $699 was just way out of everyones league. In today's dollar value, $699 for technology is almost nothing. Now, people are spending thousands on TV's, thousands...

You just pointed out the major issue in MS's campaign to secure these titles. And you know what, I'm starting to think these titles will end up on the X360. However, I am really concerned with the unorthodox methods MS in employing to get their outcome. They paid $50M to Rockstar for exclusive content on a game which will appear on a competitors machine. Developing GTA probably did not even cost $50M. They will probably offer $100M each for these games to appear on the X360. Granted they have...
