There is a company in Taiwan called Arima that makes nearly all the laptop computers for sale in the world only with Dell, Gateway, HP, and other badges on them. They basically have a few motherboard designs that are easily modified with components selected by the company that will be selling the laptops, so they can make high power gaming rigs for companies like Alienware or budget models for Gateway or any configuration in between.

Consumers may have a price they are willing to pay in mind, but retailers will ultimately decide what they will pay by what price they put on the box. Go into a big retail outlet and tell them you are only paying 300 pounds for a PS3 and try to walk out leaving the store short money and see how fast you get arrested.

Sony had a big advertising campaign here in the USA where Playstation was priced at $199 compared to $299 for the Sega Saturn. Saturn came packed with Virtua Fighter, but even with that the Saturn was still more expensive than Playstation if you bought Battle Arena Toshinden separately.
