The PS3 may well beat the Xbox 360, and it may even beat the Wii, but it will NOT "own" like the PS2 did. The PS2 outsold the competition by several times *combined*. If the PS3 wins it will be by a much smaller margin.

@hotshot "if you think sony will stay at 400 for the rest of 08.......YOUR A DUMBASS."

The PS3 is still being sold at a loss of about $100 per console, while Microsoft is currently making a profit on each unit sold. Microsoft and Nintendo both have more room to maneuver on price than Sony has.

Incidentally, it's "YOU'RE A DUMBASS". If you're going to insult people's intelligence you might want to spell it correctly.

"no one said the year 2007 will be ps3 year"

Don't make me go dig up comments from before the PS3s launch. A LOT of people said the PS3 were going to kick ass this year.

"while waiting for 1080p TVs to hit their personal price point."

1080p is going to be overkill for most people for some time. At a 10' viewing distance you need a 50" set to begin to see any difference between 1080p and 720p, and a whopping 78" set to be able to see all the detail of 1080p. By the time a significant portion of people have sets that large the Xbox 720 and the Wii 2 will likely be out.

The Xbox 360 sold ~5.6m its first year. It sold ~7.6m its second year. How is that less and less?

Keep in mind that even if HD-DVD fails it doesn't ensure Blu-ray will succeed. It's entirely possible that both formats may fail. Look at what happened to DVD-A and SACD.

"oh and if hd-dvd was so confident why drop the price of their players so much that they LOSE money selling them? "

If Sony is so confident, why are they the only console manufacturer selling their console for a loss? Of course Toshiba isn't confident about HD-DVD. Sony shouldn't be so confident about Blu-ray either. If either company drops the ball it's game over.

Selling products at a loss to gain market share is a common practice. Drawing conclusion...

The PS3 finished off its first year a month ago with 5.62m sold--almost identical to the 5.57m the 360 sold in its first year.

Edit: WTF is with people modding down facts on this site? If you're going to mod me down at least tell me why you dispute my figures. First year sales: http://tinyurl.com/2tyael

The casual gamer appeal of the Wii goes beyond motion sensing. It's also price (as mentioned), console size, controller simplicity, game selection, and marketing. My parents own a Wii. They would have never bought a big clunky Xbox or PS3. Their eyes glazed over when I used to hand them a PS2 controller due to all the buttons and joysticks.

The Wii was designed from the ground up to be friendly to casual gamers, and it was a successful strategy. Tacked on motion controls and a...

gen·er·a·tion (je-nə-ˈrā-shən) noun-- b: a group of individuals born and living contemporaneously d: a type or class of objects usually developed from an earlier type. (Merriam Webster's Dictionary)

Regardless of whether you think the innovations in the Wii are significant, it IS a next generation device by definition. The term doesn't have anything to do with technical merits. Now I will be modded down despite being factually correct.

Just aim the wiimote at the table and perform the calibration directly on the table. It doesn't even have to be on a surface, you could perform the calibration in mid air and draw on nothingness.

The PSP is a great system with great games. I think it's appropriate to compare it to that underpowered, gimmicky system that had crappy, gimmicky games the first year--The Nintendo DS. The last time I checked the DS was outselling the PSP by a margin of 2-to-1. That doesn't make the PSP a failure, but it should make people realize they're fools if they underestimate the casual gamer market.

Just because the Wii largely appeals to a different kind of gamer doesn't make it any ...

"haha just the thought of waving around my arms like a freakin magician on crack for 15 hrs is ridiculous..!"

Where do people get the ridiculous idea that you have to flail your arms around? For games like bowling or baseball it might be more fun to mimic the actual movements, but for games like Metroid or Medal of Honor 2 I play sitting with my arms on my knees, or reclining with my arm on my leg. All it takes is very small wrist movements. The pointer control adds a...

Microsoft had a motion sensing joystick, the Freestyle Pro, 8 years ago. What cares who invented what, when though? If Microsoft comes out with a motion sensing joystick that adds something to game play, more power to them.

It's all relative. The only other ways to be sure of getting a Wii right now are to pay the $100-200 premium on eBay or to camp out at your favorite retailer. Some might consider waiting 45 days a more attractive option.

You have a choice. You can either hold on to your money and hope you eventually find a Wii, or you can reserve one and be sure you'll get it. Choice is good. Hell, Wiis will probably be going for at least $300 still by the end of January. That means you can get a 20% return on a 45 day investment. Hardly a rip off.

Nintendo has gotten more consoles on to store shelves in the first year than any console in history. They've significantly ramped up production, but it's still not enough. If Sony or Microsoft could generate this kind of demand, they'd likely be sold out too.

Edit: What part of this statement could you possibly disagree with?

"By the end of the year Ps3 will be at 8 million units sold world wide. That's nearly 1.3 million more than what Microsoft did its 1st year end of year."

So you're comparing what the PS3 will have done in 1 year, 1 month, and 20 days (spanning two Christmas seasons) to what the Xbox 360 did in one year? Hardly fair.

Coming out a year earlier is not a guaranteed formula for success. It certainly didn't help the Dreamcast against the PS2. As was mentioned, many people delayed purchasing an Xbox to see how the PS3 would fare. The extra year also gave Sony another year for technology development, resulting in a console that is technologically superior in many ways. Many units were also purchased because it was the cheapest Blu-ray player (an advantage it no longer enjoys).

Trying to analyze t...
