There are two problems with your reasoning.

1. Casual gamers may not be willing to spend $460 for a bowling game.

2. Even if people did buy the PS3 just for that game, Sony would lose money on the console sale. Nintendo, on the other hand, is making a tidy profit on each console sold.

I don't think you understand the casual gamer very well. Everything you mentioned is very cool, but the average casual gamer doesn't care. That may chance over time, but don't mistake of thinking everybody would like the same things you do if only they weren't uninformed.

To be completely fair there are more 3rd party Wii games on the market (201 vs. 134). If you break it down by sales per title (what developers are most interested in) the PS3 comes out slightly ahead:

Wii: 154,000 per 3rd party title average
PS3: 172,000 per 3rd party title average

Given the number of total crap games that have been released for the Wii, however, and the bias for Nintendo titles, the fact it's even in the same ballpark is encouraging.

I would love to see better third party sales on the Wii, but I just crunched some numbers that I think will surprise everybody:

Wii 3rd Party Software Sales: 31 million
PS3 3rd Party Software Sales: 23 million

Surprised? I was too. There are a lot of valid criticisms of the Wii and third party software, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

Note: I put a fair amount of work into this, so before you mod me down add up the numbers f...

Yes, you told us that "'casual gamers' DO NOT buy games."

Really? 17 million copies of Nintendogs sold on the DS. The two brain training games have sold over 20 million copies. Animal Crossing: WW over 8 million copies.

Wii Play has sold 9 million copies; Mario Party 8 4 million; Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games 2.5 million; Rayman Raving Rabbids 1 million.

Casual gamers may not buy as many games per person as hardcore gamers, but t...

It's not absurd, it's no different than warming up before exercise. It shouldn't be a surprise that if you take the time to relax, focus and "warm up" your hands before surgery (whether it involved the Wii or not) you'll perform better.

The problem that I listed (and it's not the only one) is not one that can be solved by more research.

Yes, Nintendo published software accounts for 2/3 of all software sales (although this includes Wii Sports and Wii Play which inflates that number). It'd be nice to see stronger 3rd party titles, but be careful what conclusions you draw from this result.

1. It doesn't mean 3rd party titles can't sell well. In fact there are five 3rd party titles that have sold over one million copies on the Wii, compared with four for the PS3.

2. Even if Nintendo dominates soft...

Somehow I doubt Microsoft is crying, either. The Xbox 360 has already outsold lifetime sales of the original Xbox in Japan. American sales are up significantly, and sales in the rest of the world seem to at least be holding steady. Overall sales are up over 25% from the original Xbox, and the attach rate is excellent.

There's a huge problem with 1:1 motion. In the game if you take a massive swing at Vader's head and he blocks your character's lightsaber stops instantly. In real life, due to lack of resistance, your swing continues unimpeded. Now you are massively out of sync with the game, and getting things to match up again is nearly impossible.

This is the eighth time in a row you've copied and pasted this comment, and you didn't even write it originally. At least in the beginning you were giving attribution to the original author. Do you think you could come up with something new?

People have a ridiculously narrow definition of what constitutes a "gamer". Just because Grandpa isn't beating up hookers with a bat in GTA doesn't mean he's not a gamer.

My parents are well past 50 and they own a Wii they play regularly, especially when they have a party with other adult friends. My grandmas love Wii bowling, Bejeweled, Sudoku, and online Bingo. Laugh if you want, but last I checked all those are still games.

Two Brain Age's and Big B...

I doubt a Blu-ray attachment will come out for the 360, but not so much for the reasons in the article (although those were valid too). I think it's mainly a matter of timing and pricing. Standalone Blu-ray players have already dropped to under $300. By the time a 360 drive could be developed and brought to market I expect standalone players will have dropped to $150 or less. The attachment would have to be priced aggressively to be competitive, so there's not much profit potential.

I don't think a lawsuit is justified, and indeed, none has been filed, but give the guy a break. It was an early prototype likely designed with a limited number of games in mind. Who knows what form a final product would have taken. I think he did a great job--if we had seen this 7 or 8 years ago we all would have been drooling.

Of course, the real problem with add-on peripherals is that they never get much game support. Not only including, but offering the Wiimote as the exlc...

People on this site just don't get casual gamers--they're a force to be reckoned with. The top 10 DS games (containing titles like Nintendogs, two Brain Trainings, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon) have sold about the same number of copies as the top 10 games for the PS2 (Grand Theft Autos, Grand Turismos, Need for Speeds, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline).

You can continue to underestimate the casual gaming market if you wish, but it just makes you l...

It's dangerous to compare review scores across consoles (or even across genres for that matter)--particularly if you don't consider yourself a hardcore gamer (the market most reviews are targeted towards). I haven't crunched numbers recently, but last time I checked *user* reviews for Xbox and PS3 games were significantly below critical scores on average. Wii games, on the other hand, have user ratings typically higher than critical scores.

Wii Sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids ...

I like both Zack and Wiki and Carnival Games, but your example details exactly why numbers are important. Zack and Wiki's poor sales make it harder for new games like it to get made--and that should interest and concern you. It has nothing to do with which games are "better".

Sales data is overhyped, but it is useful in predicting what consoles and games are likely to sell well in the future, which definitely impacts gamers. You say nobody cares, but that is false because these threads are the most heavily participated in on N4G, and you're no exception. Why do you continue to waste your time commenting on stories you don't care about? Let me summarize your commenting history:
