And in the process leave hardware sales revenue on the table. As much as I want to get back into Nintendo gaming (my last console was the GameCube)... I simple cannot spend $350 for an improved screen (all other internals is the same dated hardware) when PS5 digital version is $50 more with improved everything from its previous version (PS4).

Interesting move by Microsoft. Makes sense to make a big move like this to put themselves in a position to really compete with Sony this up coming next generation console wars. One area Sony dominated in is exclusive 1st and 2nd party AAA games.

I don't see the Xbox Series S selling as well as the PS5 Digital Edition. Gamers will be purchasing the higher end Xbox Series X and even more so PS5 (both versions) instead of the less capable Xbox Series S.
Those price points makes sense and most importantly you get the same hardware performance on both versions of PS5 next gen consoles.
I am curious to see if the Xbox Series S will sell well at all or be a bust within a yr. Worse yet if the rumored price ($350-$400) for the PS5 digital is true given the fact its a more powerful option.
So OpenGL... the last time I checked (and I just did). The overwhelming majority play their console on their HDTVs (not a monitor... let not mix up console with gaming PCs). No HDTV currently readily available to consumers exceed 1080p (mainstream).
So are you saying both Sony and Microsoft will ignore the fact the market is not ready for that level of resolution and still invest in the tech?? This will also increase the cost of their future consoles (cost matters regardless...

I agree with you. The shock and suicide attempts by PS and Xbox fans when the WiiU is right there with the next Xbox and PS console (PS4 and 720) in terms of raw processing power and graphical fidelity. Just a reminder guys, the graphics cannot get better than 1080p just in case some have a pipe dream that PS4 and Xbox720 will.
Where PS4 and Xbox720 may dominate are in online services and online capabilities. But with Nintendo outsourcing its onlin...

I respectfully have to disagree with you. WiiU has native 1080p graphics capability. It is the same as me saying that 360 and PS3 are native at 720p. The PS3 do have some games that run relatively good at 1080P but not at a fluid 60 or higher FPS.
The WiiU has the CPU, GPU and efficient amount of system memory to make it happen (all the current restrictions that limit the PS3 and 360).I am sure the next PS4 and Xbox720 will also be native to 1...

Fact is WiiU will be the first home console that can do true 1080p. Of the current HD generation only the PS3 have the capability to do so but will experience terrible frame rates with graphically intense games… this is the reason why must games for the 360 and PS3 are native to 720p (mainly memory limitations). I do believe the WiiU will have a minimum of 1GB of memory.

Hmmmm at best its will be debatable when the WiiU release next year and/or the final specs on the console is released before then.
I strongly believe the release date of PS4 and Xbox720 will be heavily influence if Nintendo manage to get a chunk of the core games to take notice (this must be spec driven...) and purchase the console. If WiiU is once again more casual driven with small increase in core gamers, then Microsoft and Sony will be business as usual.
Full agree... their approach this time around is clearly very different with a focus on 3rd party support (they already have dev teams working with 3rd party developers to get their projects up and running). They have out source the development of thier online infrastructure to a outside company that specialize in that (also new for Nintendo). They have said very little about their own 1st and 2nd party titles to keep the emphasis on 3rd party developers.
