It seems SEGA has been doing a lot of experimentation with Sonic. You have Colors and Generations that had positive reception, but then you get Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom that go completely offroad.
I personally wasn't crazy about Colors, and I was hype for Generations simply for nostalgic purposes. SEGA is trying to find a place that works for Sonic without having to rely on nostalgia.
Having more female protagonists just for the sake of having them is stupid. If the director wants a female lead, then they should, regardless of anyone's feminism.
I wouldn't even compare Splatoon with Overwatch. For one thing, Splatoon has a single player story mode and Overwatch does not.
