Uncharted 2 Wins VGA's 'Game of the Year'

Naughty Dog developed one of the greatest PS3 titles of the generation with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Amazing graphics, action-packed gameplay, puzzles, fun multiplayer, and so much more really made the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves experience unlike any other game this year.

Its great that Uncharted 2 got it. Finally the PS3 gets some friggin recognition. As far as the show itself, it could have been better. I was expecting something crazy like Agent or Half Life 3 to be honest.
Arkham Asylum 2 was easily the BEST surprise!

The entire show was boring, unfunny when it tried to be funny, and bad performances (who the hell was that crappy band at the end?). However, at least they got this one right. Sadly, the only surprise was AA2 (which was a good one, at least). The Reach video sucked, as did most of the other ones. Spec-Ops actually looked pretty good I thought though. Although, almost guaranteed that was pre-rendered or PC footage.

I'm still confused how Uncharted 2 didn't get best action/adventure game over Assassin's Creed 2. Yes AC2 is a great game i played and beat it, but let me put it to people this way.

Imagine that a Super Mario game won game of the year, but it didn't win best platformer...that's 100% impossible. If it can't win as the best game in its own genre how could it be the best game that year?

I just feel that Uncharted 2 was scooping up a lot of awards and when Spike/gametrailers saw that they let that award slide to whoever was 2nd most voted for.

Good choice. Uncharted 2 is one of the best games on the PS3 (after MGS4 and Bioshock, of course...).
I'm glad the VGA chose wisely this year, but I still think Killzone 2 has better graphics than Uncharted 2. It's not that UC2 has mediocre graphics, it's just that my jaw dropped further when I popped in KZ2 for the first time.

Come on people, if Developers don't get the sales support from us in the ps3 community, they might question whether it is worth the effort of spending extra time, resources and money on making fabulous exclusives on ps3 that just don't sell as well, relatively speaking?

@Commodore... 2 million in 2 months not bad for any game man. Ya it's not Halo or GT numbers, but still if any games breaks the 1 million mark means the devs have more than broken even.... I understand your argument, but if you look at the dynamics of the market, apart from a selected few games like Halo, MGS, Gears, GT... None sell over the 3-4 million mark.

People will always buy games if they are in their 3rd or 4th iteration... MGS sells, GT sells for the same even Halo... Gears too defined the start of next gen and so is famous.... Even if you see on the 360, their best game (ME1) barely sold over 2 million and even Forza just reached 1 million...

It's all in the name mate. Games like GOW3 and GT5 will sell @ss loads next year due to them being well known from the past. Hell they will even move a lot of consoles, but UC1 went under the radar for quiet a few gamers when they ditched it in 07.... But just to give you the numbers, even it sold poorly early and had really long legs which helped it cross 2.5 million... UC2 did that in 2-3 months!!!! That is an improvement.... I am damn sure UC2 will sell more than 3 million in it's lifetime which is phenomenal for any game.

I also understand the 28 million, but there are 140 million PS2s in the market and yet games on that sold the same amount as they are selling this gen....

I like that UC2 won, and I really like that Dragon Age Origins is getting the cred it deserves (although Demon's Souls is also amazing).

What I don't like is this: They give Assassin's Creed 2 the win over Uncharted 2 for best action/adventure game at the beginning of the show. Then, UC2 wins overall for game of the year at the end of the show. Spike, this is not 3rd grade, everyone doesn't have to win. If UC2 is the GOTY, why isn't it the winner in its own category?

I know, I know, the answer is PR money. But still, that's just... weird. That's like saying that Mario 3 was the best Mario title ever, but Super Mario Bros. was the best title on the NES. Does not compute.

Naughty Dog basically succeeded in creating a more action packed game with amazing dynamic set pieces than Infinity Ward.

The only thing in my mind after I finished Uncharted 2 was, "How the hell can Infinity Ward top THIS!?!?"

Commodore, I'll "bite"...For once I'll set your history aside and "discuss" this civilly.

Uncharted 2 did not have the advertising you think it did, from what I see around here and from what I hear from others outside of my area. Most people still don't know what the IP is outside the core gaming populace. The problem is exposure, and there is still hatred for the PS3 in a way that stifles many of its games...Games like MGS4 can break that number fairly quickly because as was noted, it has a legacy and doesn't need as much hype or exposure as a "new IP" like Uncharted. Comparatively to Halo or CoD, Uncharted is almost a niche game because of its awareness, there's a difference there. Trust me, the IP is not "out there" like "Oh, yes I know of Halo" is. I haven't seen ANY advertising for Uncharted around me except in gaming mags or on gaming sites, yet MW2 and Halo get crammed down throats around here (on soda, on tv, on billboards, all over)....It's all about exposure.

The other reason, as has been noted as well, is the long legs the PS3 games have, and the choice its users have. There are tons of options for these new gamers to sift through who are just now getting the cheaper PS3 for the first time, and the PS3 demographic has shown to be different than the 360 demographic. This is demonstrated by several statistics, like Halo 3, Gears, GTA and COD type games being what sell on the 360, and at massive levels. But then that characteristic goes down some notches as you get to the lesser known titles like Crackdown 1 and Dead Rising 1, who's sales even after several years don't get more than a couple million despite being great games.

The fact is, there are a handful of "core" games that sell VERY well on 360 and the rest sell in line with the PS3's numbers. The demographic is the cause for this, and if you look at the regions the systems are from it also lends credence to this concept as well. Europe and Japan have different sales/tastes on games for PS3 than the ones in NA (where I am)...Games like Resistance and Uncharted are more popular around me than games like Cross Edge and Pro Evo...but most of "those" gamers have 360's and are set for a console after that. Where 360 is popular, the audience for Uncharted 1 & 2 is pretty high, and where the PS3 is more popular, there are other games that those gamers will buy first or instead. I'm in a minority around here, most people have 360's and not as many have PS3's. I have about 50 games for my PS3 (and another 15 from PSN) and I'm REALLY in a minority around here. That is the demographic at work.

That is why, IMO, on top of the fact that the 360's attach rate is slightly (but not significantly) higher than PS3's. The fact is, the game will have breached 2 million by years end, that's phenomenal for a newer IP in 10 weeks. The only games to beat that pace are as I said, MW2, Mario, Halo, GT, etc... So for an "under the radar" game to go unnoticed (around me) and blast off with its second iteration at that rate, it IS impressive, and trust me, will garner sequels and make ND and Sony content. Sure, they would LIKE Halo numbers for it, but aren't naive enough to expect them, and maybe because you're a fevered 360 fan, you won't understand that perspective. If you open your mind and read my words without the malice you usually have, maybe it will make sense.

I'm not big on the PS3. I don't own one nor do I plan to get one. I do however think that UC2 is more than deserving of getting such a high accolade. I am 100% sure that Infinity Ward would take the sales they got for COD2 over this award. The biggest award for a developer or publisher is sales. UC received awards for the technical stuff, not because it was the most enjoyable to play. AC2 worn over UC2 in that category. UC2 is a great technical achievement and deserves the awards, but the most popular and successful game by a mile is COD2.

Hmm, just a guess, but maybe they thought the action adventure parts of UC2 weren't as good as AC2 (like the hand-to-hand fighting and platforming) and the shooting in UC2 wasn't as good as some of the other shooters, but overall it was the best game. Not a good reason to not win, but still, just a guess. I think it should have won Best Action/Adventure and Best Shooter, but I guess they didn't want to have it win everything.

Spec Ops looked great and was surprised because I didn't even know or hear anything prior to the showing.

I think just because the guy from GT was hyping up that trailer is why I was expecting more from it. I don't know why he said it would blow us away. But yeah I was mistaken I thought he said it was gameplay but he just said it was in engine. maybe E3 than. Although the one Spartan with the skull face on his helmet looked pretty cool haha.

Well, to be fair, they never said it was gonna be a gameplay trailer, just that it was in-engine. That being said though, it was crappy. Obvious use of pre-rendered cutscene (think of the far more impressive cutscenes of UC2), which shows us nothing about the actual gameplay graphics they are touting so strongly. About as indicative as the BS PR shots they showed on Halo 3, and we all know how that turned out.

The Spec-Ops trailer was showing gameplay though, and looked really good. I'm sure it's the PC version, but still, looked fun.

Also glad to see the new Batman, but not really surprised, as we all knew they were gonna make another one, but still nice.

For those wondering how UC2 got GOTY but not adventure game of the year, its because the VGA's a voting system that lets people vote as many times as they want, someone could easily pump votes into one category. This is not an evaluation of the quality of the game, but the popularity buy a group as a whole or just an individual who has alot of time and pumps in votes.

Also to put it in perspective that there are lots of "GOTY" winners from various sources. For those who were saddened that MW2 didn't get game of the year on spike, it did get shooter of the year, and Time Magazine awarded it GOTY for 2009.

I tried playing UC1 when I first got my PS3 at the start of the year.
Looked very nice but and then? Seriously nothing new.

Played the odd game that took my fancy during the year.

Next bought both Infamous and UC2 recently. Infamous, I loved the demo and also now the full game. However UC2 has done nothing for me. It really is a case of looks very good but does nothing that really makes it stand out from the crowd. The same happened to me when I bought KZ2, traded that in after a few weeks because I honestly got bored with it.

Its got to the point where I've turned off the PS3 and gone back to playing all my old 360 games that I've not tried yet. Currently that is Mass Effect. How I never played this before I'll never know. Totally engrosed by it. It doesn't have the graphical fidelity of the current PS3 cream of the crop but that hasn't put me off at all.

I guess that as I've got older the look of a game, although important, takes a back seat to immersion. Looking forward now to finally giving Fallout3 a try.

Thats only my opinion. I know many more will completely disagree with me. Thats fine. Thats life!

And yes I do prefer my 360 to my PS3. Its called choice, not fanboyism. There is a major difference.

That's good stuff. Sorry dude but Uncharted 2 is pretty much going to sweep all the major GOTY awards this year. It may not bring much new to the table but it takes all the best elements from games for say the past 10 years and then combines them into the perfect mixture. Then throw in the MP and presto you have a perfect game.

I think it deserved it because it was the best all around game of the year. Best made, grpahics, action, voice acting etc.... I did have more fun playing through AC2 though. I can see why U2 won the award; but for me, I thought AC2 should have gotten it just on fun factor alone. AC2 was much much longer and frankly, I think the storyline for a sequel was much better. This is only my opinion though. U2 was indeed a kickass title and I do see why it won. It did deserve it and I am looking forward to whatever Naughty Dog gives us next. Great job they did!

Uncharted 2 was excellent. The perfect action game with arguably the best graphics on a console (Killzone 2 may still get my vote). A well deserved GOTY for PS3 and Naughty Dog. They had so many amazing exclusive titles this year.

Demon's Souls may have been my favorite game this year though. What an amazing game!

Wow, this sure is a change of pace. Even in the midst of the November NPD numbers, the VGA's still picked Uncharted 2 as GOTY.

I really am at a lost for words. I'm just glad Modern Warfare 2 wasn't picked. its a good game, but it sometime gets more hype than it deserves.

And I'm glad that these games awards judges have acknowledged this. I completed Uncharted 2 like last month, and I can tell you I spent everyday playing it from when I started to when I finished. The game has everything to offer on a grand scale:

Graphics - Simply inrcedible and very stunning to look at. The immense detail, various effects, animations and designs are the best seen this generation, no arguments.

Sound - The soundtrack is more than good enough, and the sound effects are spot on.

Gameplay - Hugely enjoyable, fun and engrossing. Contains everything a top action/adventure game should have. Gunfights, stealth missions, stunts, platforming, puzzle-solving, wild hectic chase scenes, THE LOT!

Storyline - Brilliantly storyline and plot twists. This is what keeps you going in the game the most along with the explosively fun gameplay and stunning graphics.

All PS3 owners must own or AT LEAST play this game! You need to, you must do! GAME OF THE YEAR INDEED!

I totally agree with but KillZone 2 was alot more then graphics if you played tha game.Its didnt become another generic shooter until people start complaining about tha controls.And if you only played it for one day then you is tha dumbass that wasted his money not me.Tha SP was great I loved tha fact I was invading their planet.Gave you a chance to see how they live and how they will go to protect their way of living.Tha MP was a nice change of pace from the other MP options you find in shooters.
