Uncharted 2 sales weak in November

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves released to extraordinary hype and to great critical acclaim. Sporting not only impressive graphics, storyline, action, and fun online multiplayer, the game has a little bit of everything for every gamer. Sadly, the game isn't performing as well on the retail shelves as it should be.

Well, its pretty obvious why many PS3 owners haven't picked it up yet. COD:MW2 was a juggernaut for all consoles.

Don't worry though, after Uncharted 2 wins GOTY awards from critics alike(Hopefully it gets GOTY especially in this years VGAs), PS3 owners will see how great this game must be, and will begin to slowly pick it up again! :D

Game sales don't matter. PS2 never had an exclusive that sold over 10 million and it has over 120 million systems sold. Halo 1, 2, and 3 have each sold over 10 million and both the xbox and xbox 360 respectively haven't sold more than 35 million.

Back when Uncharted 2 launched I wrote an article saying this would happen. When the games media can't attack a PS3 game for it's quality, it's only a matter of time before they bash it because it didn't sell like Halo. It's pathetic. The examiner is attacking Uncharted 2 sales for just being shy of the 2 million mark? Do they have any idea how rare it is for a game to sell this much? Uncharted 2 has now outsold 95% of the 360's library. How's that for some perspective?

As great as the Uncharted franchise is, it's not as popular as CoD yet.

While I personally love Uncharted 2 and bought it Day One, a few of my friends put UC2 on their "to be bought later" list, snatched up COD:MW2, and jumped right into the multiplayer

I know one guy that heard the hype surrounding Demon's Souls and picked that up instead! Can't blame him; it's an amazing experience.

UC2 will sell just fine (it already is anyways) after people get their fix of whatever game has their attention at the moment.

Even if it's not every PS3 owner's number one pick, it's a lot of people's next pick to be played.

They determine wether or not a publisher will continue to support the game. It is the stat that says wether or not gamers truly had interest in what was produced. It is way more important than some website's review. If a game averages 2/10 and sells 12mil copies it will more like have a sequel than a game which got 10/10 and sold 160K. But reviews are good publicity. So when a game gets 10's and high 9's from the so call bias media, that is a big boost and the game needs to outsell lower score game to live up to the hype.

Media bias this gen is atrocious. Uncharted two cost around 20mil to make. I'm not sure about the break down of a games' sales profit distribution but I'm sure out of the $60 a game sells for, around $40 is profit. So 1.8mil*40=72mil. 72mil in profits-20mil in production costs=52mil in profits= success. So I'd say that most games that sell at least a mil is considered a sales success. Anything else is gravy. Also many games on the PS3 have long legs so in a couple of years it will most likely be over 3mil.

Sales are important only to a certain point. 1mil being good enough for 100% profit and a sequel for most companies. Quality is much more important to buyers of any product than popularity.

Look at media in general and you'll see that the best don't always sell as well as inferior products. For music, are The Black Eye Peas and Lil Wayne the cream of the crop because they sell amazingly well? Or are Hollywood summer blockbusters the epitome of film making?

This gen with all the PS3 smear tactics, sales=quality arguments, inconsistency in reviews and false information in general is annoying. As a gamer, game quality and preference are by far the most important.

...so Forza 3 sold less than 315k for sure in Nov for North America, and most likely around 100k since that's the average numbers for the games in position 11 - 20.
That works out to a little less than 489k AT BEST in North America so far, but more likely around 275k.

What other action/adventure game besides Metal Gear Solid 4 has sold better? It's doing better so far than Batman which was a huge success in North America. Ok the game is not already at 3 Million sold, but let's face it. The game will sell over 3 Million worldwide in the 32 weeks. And that is Huuuuuuge for any current gen title in this generation.

Forza 3 is in a genre that is not expected to sell as well. Uncharted 2 falls into the most popular video game genres (Shooter, Action/Adventure) and is the biggest game of the year for the PS3. Uncharted 2 doesn`t seem like the long-term sales machine like LBP or something. LBP is the game where friends of friends of friends of friends see it, and then buy it. Uncharted 2 has all of the initial sales of the people who were closely following it, and a few after that. It still did pretty good for itself (close to 2 mil). But it`s not the game that keeps on selling...its just not.

And no I don't mean they look like movies. Usually movies do most of their sales in the first few weeks, after that tickets sales usually drop off pretty quickly and the movie is often out of the theaters before the second month is done.

The same thing is happening with games. Everybody has to have the hot new game ASAP because they don't want to be left out or fall behind in the multiplayer stats bragging race. That's why there is so much more pre-order and midnight openings than there used to be.

That is because the targeted demographic is the same. It is the tweeners with large amounts of disposable income. They are the "gotta have it today" buyers. They are most likely to make impulse buying decisions...which includes going to the movie just because Y actress is HOT and not because a movie is actually worth seeing...or buying X game because everybody is going to buy it (even IF it might not be in their particular gaming interests).

Metal Gear Solid 4 may finally be at the 5 million mark, but why not Killzone 2? Why not Resistance? LittleBigPlanet? Uncharted 2? All of the big PS3 exclusives have sold at least 1 million. Even Infamous did it just last week. PS3 games tend to sell consistently for years as evidenced by Resistance and Ratchet sales. Slow and steady is pretty much par for the course. As long as the game sells through in the millions at the end of its run, what's the big deal?

How many copies of Gears of War 2 or Halo 3 sold after the first few months? Those games were completely front-loaded like a summer blockbuster. PS3 games tend to perform like a good drama consistently doing business, just not big business. And then in the end, they sell millions when you add it all up.

Any Naughty Dog game is a day-oner for me.
They were hoping for 1mill+ with UC2, and it will easily make 2 million. Allthough I wish it sold ten times more since Naughty Dog really deserves it. Regardless it's no doubt one of the best games of all time.

Why was there so much ant-halo/anti-360 talk pre & post ODST launch? Talk of how it wasn't going to sell well. Talk of the game not improving, etc. (Which is right-I thought the game was a rip-off).

Then there was all this hoopla about TEH EXCLUSIVE Uncharted 2 and how good it looked, etc, etc.

YET THE SALES WERE NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS MW2 (which was hardly talked about by PS3 owners.)

COD:MW2 has better multiplayer then uncharted 2, but that is it. It really is the Hype that sells games.
I do know a few people that had to get ratchet and clank or demon's soul over Uncharted 2, but we can't buy everything.
Really the problem if you can call it that is PS3 fans have so many choices, and they just keep getting better. Next year before May PS3 has 5 huge games coming out.(God of War, Heavy Rain, Mag, WhiteKnightChronicles, and Mod Nation Racers) the 360 will be lucky to see 5 all year.(Mass Effect2, SplinterCell, but then wait till the end of the year for Halo:Reach and Fable 3 both will most likely be november december release, or early 2011)

I am sure Sony is already taking a very deep look at there 1st party games, and trying to figure out how to appeal there userbase.

Cetainly the userbase is small in the US, but that can NOT explain the fact that Sony's biggest 1st party title this year(a game that garnered insane reviews scores, and hype, and has some of the best graphics, and production values ever, and a game that Sony obviously spent a FORTUNE on producing, and advertising COULD NOT EVEN SELL 30% in its opening month what MW2 sold in its opening month.(1.87m to 537k.

Sony's 1st party games have just sold terrible, and they need to take a deep look at what they invest money, and how to appeal to there userbase.

Personally I didn't like Uncharted 2 its a 5/10 mediocre game IMO. I absolutely hated the very boring, and tedious platform levels. Hated how extremely linear, and scripted the game was, and felt the game done a very poor job of ingrating the actual gameplay with the mind blowing cutscenes, awesome story, and amazing voice acting.

Despite my personal opinion of the game I was sure this game would finally break Sony's first party sales woe, and really help carry the PS3 during the Holiday season, but the excate opposite happen. The game went from #1 to dropping out of the freaking TOP 20 NPD(putting up a totally mebarassing 113k) in only one month I cann't ever remember another game flopping that bad the very next month.

I know I for one won't be buying the next Uncharted game, and Sony need to figure out why such a low % of PS3 owners didnt buy Uncharted 2 either.

Before Sony invests a FORTUNE in another 1st party game they are going to have to take a deep look at how it appeals to the PS3 userbase.

Maybe it's because of the WIDE range of excellent games brought forth. I for one wanted NGS2 and R&C: Cit. But until this day I COULD NEVER HAVE THE MONEY TO GET IT. WHY? Cause there were just TOO many choices.

Don't give me crap about MW2. With 25+million PS3 users worldwide, I expect the same sales rate as the 360. And yet the 360 outsold the PS3 3:1.

Had you even bother checking sales on other FPS games on the 360/PS3 you were have saw that those 360 games outsell the PS3 version around 3 to 1, and in some cases even 4 to 1 on the 360. The 360 is THE FPS console while FPS on not really that popular on the PS3.
