Maybe they see it as a money oportunity, hopefully they will support Oculus

PLASTICA-MAN3705d ago

Holly molly! Please no, this will lead to the death of an interesting concept even before birth. R.I.P VR or better say VR abortion.

AliTheSnake13705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

So why are people upset ? I think this is great for the project if done right.
With facebook's funding, this will help Oculus reach its goal of High end immerse experience.
I don't think it will shift it away from gaming at all. This is exciting news, not just hardcore gamers are interested in the technology. Facebook can fund this and market it to the moon. And us Gamers will be the first to benefit from it.

Naga3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

They may support it, but to what end? With what vision?

Zuckerberg sees this as some great avenue for sharing social experiences - "a new communication platform," as he called it. I fear that Oculus Rift has just gone from being our door to a new gaming frontier, to being a door to 3D chatrooms and other social interaction.

"After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home."

While he mentioned the original gaming mission and purpose of Oculus Rift, I fear it only amounts to lip service. Because at the end of the day, Facebook has little interest in pushing the boundaries of gaming media... all they have ever cared about is social media. And although I love technology as much as the next guy, and I'm excited for new social experiences, the gamer in me is very disheartened right now.

JoGam3705d ago

Don't worry people. Sony is still making theirs.

combatcash3705d ago

This can be a really good thing especially with FB's funding. I hope they keep the same people working on it.

rodiabloalmeida3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

I just waked up from a nap. I'm think I'm still sleeping.. and having a nightmare.

darthv723705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

If FB thinks people will want to wear the headgear to get that virtual face to face then they really need to make sure it has a low cost of entry.

i have a feeling we are headed towards the future of VR/robotic interaction like that movie surrogates. never have to leave the house (yourself) but you just wear the VR gear and travel about virtually.

-Foxtrot3705d ago

Now we all get to play on Farmville....in VR

/s

Pixel_Enemy3705d ago

This is just validation that FB see's potential in this tech. Now that we have Sony working on a PS4 version, it just means that there's hope for this medium.

ThunderSpark3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

"According to a newswire report, Facebook will expand usage of the virtual reality headsets past gaming, into realms of communication, entertainment and education.. Zuckerberg hinted that the headsets may also be another way to expand Facebook’s reach via mobile devices."

Guess Morpheus won't have any competition game wise.. smh

TomShoe3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Well shit.

Why Facebook? Why must you kill everything I love?

Army_of_Darkness3705d ago

with Oculus VR, it will literally be facebook ;-)

SpringHeeledJack3705d ago

Wow i can't believe they sold out and to facebook of all the companies that would be a perfect fit they sell out to facebook.

Just a kick in the teeth to pc gamers. This thing will be centered around social apps and ads now.

darthv723705d ago

Google i could see as they could adapt the VR into their google glass and make a hybrid of sorts.

FB on the other hand....just seems odd. What's next? FB to buy Onlive????

starchild3705d ago

"Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this."

This is reassuring. I'm sure the Oculus guys would never sign into an agreement they didn't think was for the betterment of VR gaming and VR in general.

TheGreatAndPowerful3705d ago

Sony all eyes are on you now. If you release Morpheus for PC you'd have the VR market on lock for years to come.

OR users are not happy and many are saying they're going to cancel their DK2 orders because they don't want to support Zuckerberg and FB.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Gam...

ZodTheRipper3705d ago

I would sign any agreement for 2 billion dollars. Good that Playstation, a pure gaming platform, will enter the VR market soon. Sony must be throwing a party right now, their biggest competitor just went casual.

AceBlazer133705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

They sell out to facebook? Really?Facebook of everything ? I would rather hear Microsoft bought the Oculus than facebook.Oculus is gonna be an ad fest now. We'll be lucky if it has a remote connection to gaming when facebook is done with it. Farm Sim 2015, dear god i see it now.

I love sony but now that oculus has gone to facebook, the task of pushing vr as the next thing in gaming is a lot for 1 company.I thought it would be fine with oculus pushing it as well but now vr really does need microsoft, nintendo or even both to take off. Gaming wise at least.

lociefer3705d ago

On the bright side, maybe some occulus rift ppl will jump ship to project morpheus

starchild3705d ago

"Team,

As you may have heard this morning, Oculus has agreed to join Facebook.

Facebook shares our vision for connecting a billion people through virtual reality with the power of shared presence.

Oculus will continue to operate independently. We’re staying Oculus, we’re still building the Oculus Rift, our email addresses are remain @oculusvr.com, and most importantly, our hoodies will still say Oculus.

By partnering with Facebook, we’ll be able to build a better product with zero compromises and a focus on growth. We’ll also be investing more heavily in made-for-VR content and exploring other opportunities to accelerate our vision.

In broad strokes, here are a few key points to consider for the long-term strategy:

1. We’re able to tap into Facebook’s experience and backend systems for our platform services. As an added bonus, Oculus now has a rock solid, global payments solution.
2. We’ll be able to leverage Facebook’s recruiting infrastructure, including hiring engineers from within Facebook, to supercharge our recruiting.
3. We can afford to always make the decision that is right for virtual reality and our customers in the long term – we don’t have to make short term compromises.
4. We’re going to invest in additional partnerships to build the best product and platform.

I’ll meet with everyone individually over the next few days to discuss what this means in terms of integration. In the meantime, know that things couldn’t be better.

No team, ever, has had a better shot at delivering on the dream of virtual reality. This will be the team that solves the hardest problems and delivers the final platform. We need you now, more than ever, to go out and find the very best engineers in the world to help us deliver the final platform, the Holodeck.

This is a truly special moment. The work we’ve done has captured the world’s attention and changed the perception of the medium forever. This partnership is a huge affirmation of everything we’ve done. Congratulations, guys.

Now, let’s get back to changing the world.

– Brendan"

People writing off the Oculus Rift now are being silly. I'm not without some concerns, but a lot of people are jumping to all kinds of absurd conclusions. Let's wait and see how this pans out.

I'm not too worried about it to be honest. From the first time I used the Rift I knew that the possibilities for VR were far greater than just gaming. That said, there's lots of money to be made in gaming and I have no reason to doubt the statements from Facebook and Oculus with regard to their intention to push VR gaming forward.

nukeitall3705d ago

Actually this is one of the best things that could happen to Oculus Rift. Facebook is rife with talent and the resources they can throw at this thing will make it a serious competitor to Sony (and MS).

This is all around good news, but holy cow that makes Oculus Rift owners some serious money.

morganfell3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

I am cancelling my Occulus order.

I do not know which is more insulting, the buyout by Zuckerburg or Occulusbook expecting us to buy off on that idiotic press statement.

It doesn't matter what Brendan says, he doesn't own the company anymore. All gamers have to do is look at every entity we loved that was purchased by another larger company and all of them issued similar releases. Each of them discussed, "No compromise, we're still independent, we'll have more funding for a better product!" blah blah blah. His words aren't worth the electrons it took to blow them in our faces.

Everyone of them went to crap and their products became mass produced middle of the road endeavors. No thanks.

Shutup, take your money and get out of my hobby. Kickstarted you so you could get rich and then desert the ideas you used to get rich. Enjoy.

Angeljuice3705d ago

Oculus shows great promise but $2bn worth? They seriously overpaid there. Still, if both sides are happy (especially Oculus partners I'd imagine) then so be it.

Hopefully with that level of investment it will be fast-tracked and have a better chance of market penetration.

SilentNegotiator3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Hey, if it means that they don't have to push MORE ads for revenue, then great; let FB expand into other fields.

And with a big company behind it, we might see a final version by 2015 instead of 2029.

blackbeld3705d ago

Damn! Facebook everywhere!!

Lucky we still have Sony VR.

justSumDood3705d ago

This news is staggering, but not really surprising. Anyone who has given VR serious thought has already come to the conclusion that it was going to transcend simple gaming, this was VR's destiny all along.

However, it's still a sobering revelation considering the corporation involved (I know,I know...most people see FB as benign. How else could you sign on and give up your basic right to privacy?)
However, the speed and resolve at which they made this move tells me they have big plans for our society. (On a side note, at first glance I thought this news might be fake. How the hell did FB determine a 2BN dollar valuation of Oculus?)

I haven't given up on VR, but this latest news gives me pause. It's all moving so fast now. This is a frightening vision of the future on par with MS's wanting to put cameras in our homes.
And I'm not sure I'm willing to plug my mind into FB's vast mega-network for the sake of social integration.

At this point I'm hoping some other company will step forward and offer another choice in the PC VR realm.

erathaol3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

For $2billion, you better expect support.

Agreed, with everyone, glad Sony made their own.

Wizard_King3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

I'm very glad I didn't get sucked into buying one of those dev models or pre ordering the damn thing.

IT'S RUINED NOW.

The OR will just wind up a social networking wank fest.

F*^@ FB get a life! is all I can say, I never have nor ever will make a FB account, everything they touch goes to cancer and everyone self absorbed pleb on it is part of the cancer.

papashango3705d ago

It's frustrating. Valve helped Occulus with their tech and sharing information back and forth. Then they turn around and give them the middle finger.

Facebook now owns alot of the technology that makes consumer level VR gaming possible...

Their focus is social/media first, gaming second. Nothings keeping facebook from sitting on this tech if their social vr experiments fail...And they will fail.

BattleAxe3705d ago

$2 Billion? This is after they bought WhatsApp for $16 Billion? These companies are not worth billions IMO.

That-Guy3704d ago

But that's how it works. Companies like Facebook are not capable of spending even $2 billion to innovate and build something of their own. They have no ambition, so heavily rely on the creative minds of others. And that'll be their downfall.

Utalkin2me3704d ago

@rodiabloalmeida

"I just waked up from a nap"

Obviously you're not in reality, go back to sleep.

morganfell3704d ago

What is laughable is Palmer Luckey over at Reddit doing damage control. He is saying one thing and at the same time Zuckerburg is contradicting him. Palmer is saying things for which he has no authority to guarantee. He is stating nothing will change that they are going to keep doing what they want.

But there is a problem.

History.

Zuckerburg is a control freak. When he says he wants them to focus on the commercial industry rather than gaming then that "doing what they want" goes away.

I will bet the world they do not have a contract that says, "We just spent 2 billion on you but you are guaranteed total autonomy". Facebook would never do that. Zuckerburg says they have no sure plans for monetization yet but likely ads down the line.

BS.

They do not drop 2 billion without already knowing how they will get the cash back.

Palmer is 21 years old and naive as hell. He doesn't realize he has a new boss. I can't blame him for wanting the money. Not at all. But he doesn't get to ask us to trust him. Why should we. He has already proven himself a liar. This deal has probably been cooking for over a month or more. Yeah, let us all order Cystal Cove before telling us.

abzdine3704d ago

for sure all behind sony now!

Syntax-Error3704d ago

Bunch of whiners. Sound like the same idiots when SONY announced they were making a game console to compete against NINTENDO and SEGA. Imagine the same idiots when MICROSOFT said they wanted in. I wonder if these fools new EA was going to make a console and they scrapped the idea which made more sense. Facebook just like MS, Google, and Apple revolutionized and pioneered new paths for technology, so why wouldn't they see potential and want in? No one said it would be incorporated in their current projects.

andibandit3704d ago

So, this is the future of VR?....I can finally enjoy all those meaningless FB updates in VR

DatNJDom813704d ago

The only good thing I see from this is that now I will be able to sex chat with some girls in VR. I wouldn't mind that at all. But it does suck for gaming.

However, the possibilities...... XD

This is just a joke by the way. Lets see how many disagrees I get.

FamilyGuy3704d ago

1. 2Billion is a lot of money, who could refuse an offer like that?

2. With Morpheus finally announced maybe they were feeling like they needed some proper backing?

I don't blame them for selling but I do understand why fans are upset and worried.

morganfell3704d ago (Edited 3704d ago )

As I said above, I do not blame them for taking the money, but I think very little of their character. No amount of money or lying to themselves will every make that go away. Selling your dream at any price is bad. The alternative is they never believed in the project in the first place and thus were always lying to supporters.

So there are the choices. They are people that sell their dreams or they are liars. Neither is palatable.

Besides, they were sitting in the catbird seat and were getting ready to make a pile of cash.

The only problem with that take about the needing backing is threefold. First they had more orders than they could get out the door. Second, Facebook approached them. Third, this deal has been brewing for a while. It didn't happen overnight because of GDC. So when this deal first started between Facebook and Occulus all they had were whispers about Sony. If even rumors were making Occulus run scared then they shouldn't be in the industry in the first place.

Kidmyst3704d ago

What's xext Facebook will put out a console? I'd be happier if MSFT, Nvidia, Valve, anyone in the gaming business buy it, but not Facebook.

Muzikguy3704d ago

@morganfell I completely agree with everything you are saying. My hype for this just fell to the depths of the ocean.

"By partnering with Facebook, we’ll be able to build a better product with zero compromises and a focus on growth. We’ll also be investing more heavily in made-for-VR content and exploring other opportunities to accelerate our vision."

This is such a naive statement. In many people's eyes, mine included, Facebook is going downhill. Is it wise to partner with someone who is losing grasp on what they became famous for? Also, who wants VR ads in their VR games. I'm so skeptical about this move I see nothing good coming from it at all :/

weekev153705d ago

Why not? Just because this is the guy that created Facebook and is partially responsible for the success of things like Candy Crush and all that stuff (due to the success of Facebook games, I know mobile gaming helped) doesnt mean he won't support VR gaming with the OR headset.

This is a guy that knows how to be successful and lets be honest the rift is going up against Morpheus from Sony who are the guys to beat when it comes to gaming. Maybe with the empire that Zuckerberg has created behind it, it will stand more chance of success and we will see more support from devs?

BattleTorn3705d ago

I'm not excited about this news, but honestly Zuckerberg might as well team up with Amazon now - and buy the Xbox brand as well.

(to truly go up against Morpheus)

weekev153705d ago

I wouldn't say I was excited by the news either. Intrigued perhaps, you don't spend $2bn dollars on something to get people to strap Farmville to their heads, he's up to something and I would like to know what it is.

Testfire3705d ago

Facebook is not a successful company. They lose money hand over fist every year. They've been buying up companies left and right with investors money with no profit to show in return. Facebook and twitter are both anomalies in the sense that they aren't making any profit but people still invest money in them

Mr Tretton3705d ago

Testfire says: "Facebook is not a successful company."

Facebook says: We just spent $2 billion.

Narutone663705d ago

Maybe this is the reason Sony didn't team up with OC, or buy them, they might have known that FB is buying OC.

LexHazard793705d ago

@Narutone66,
@2billion dollars, Sony couldnt afford it even if it wanted to buy it!

Anyway who needs OC when you have Morpheus! I wonder if Morpheus will also be compatible with Facebook, as you can link your consoles to it.

Gazondaily3705d ago

"Why....just why?!"

I dunno man. I swear these guys want to get their grubby little hands on anything. I mean, why did they buy whatsapp for that ridiculous price tag? It's like they're intent on knowing everything about us.

Ah well, at least this proves that others are recognising VR as the next big thing. Lets see how this pans out.

This is a really strange development indeed.

starchild3705d ago

This is certainly a shock. I thought Oculus didn't want to be bought out. I guess they were satisfied with where Facebook wanted to take the tech and the money was too good.

This could be a very good thing, or a bad thing. I don't know yet.

Still in shock.

ZodTheRipper3705d ago

"I guess they were satisfied with where Facebook wanted to take the tech and the money was too good. "

Or it was the 2.000.000.000 $ that satisfied them. Honestly, you don't really think they accepted this deal for any other reason do you? I don't even blame, I would do the same, fuck my creative vision just gimme that cream.

Volkama3705d ago

The rift was always destined to expand into wider industries. The potential for that kind of simulation is just huge, way beyond entertainment. Lots of us saw that coming. Facebook will now steer the revolution.

Your own quote above about retaining the gaming side is encouraging. It will take a bit more time to spread the level of tech out to other industries, and even longer for mainstream social media.

Even if education and virtual meetings are the agenda, I don't think gaming will be left on the side lines. They just got a heap more resources to work with.

GTgamer3705d ago

Are you prepared to See Facebook Notifications in VR (•ิ_•ิ).

Wizard_King3705d ago

kewlkat0073705d ago

That's a lot if cash though...

frostypants3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Because now Facebook can shove advertising in your face...IN YOUR VR GAMES!

These guys are going to bastardize this thing all to hell.

Take this project out behind the shed and shoot it...it's a goner.

T23705d ago

The horrors that will follow are pretty obvious unless you are a massive optimist... I am not.
I see 3D F2p games abound, virtual chatrooms and Ads, ads, ads.
No way in hell you are going to get teams of people working on VR counterstrike

mark3214uk3705d ago

i dont get it, its like twitter joining sega, apart from facebooks cash pile i dont see how this can work?

i think oculus were expecting sony and ms to make a aggrement with them but they opted to do there own now oculus have joined facebook out of desperation as there scared to take on ms and sony, when they shouldnt be scared as they have a great product

TBONEJF3705d ago

WAST OF TIME N MONEY i hope FB GOES BANKRUPT

Spenok3704d ago

Agreed. I hope they leave all creative freedom to the current dev team, and leave it alone. Just let them do their thing, and FB can reap the rewards.

If they start changing things then that's where I would draw the line.

Hope for the best for the team and their new parent company.

MonstaTruk3704d ago

It doesn't work like that.

They're FACEBOOK. Their ad revenue is ridiculous, you don't suddenly go from that to...making video games gull time, you know? I guess what I'm saying is...they didn't buy oculus rift to sit around and play the "let's hope we come out with a good game/exclusive this year" deal like Microsoft/SONY/Nintendo. They're on another page, that guarantees SERIOUS revenue, and it has very little to do with games. Oculus Rift is now on that same page, also...

WTF... i guess its up to Sony and Microsoft now.

Paulie_gualtieri3705d ago

This counts Microsoft out of VR in my opinion. No way they'll pour millions and millions in R&D just to show up late in a 2 person race.

They tend to buy their way into these things.I figured they would of bought Oculus just to enter the VR market and stay competitive, after they waited to see if VR is a success or not.

Not looking like they'll be buying their way in now lol

ZombieDust3705d ago

I saw an article here quoting Microsoft saying they have been working on VR for a while

No_Limit3705d ago

@Zeldass,

MS are already working on their own VR tech and it will be revealed at E3. LOL, how could it be a 2 man race when none of the VR headsets is out yet? Nice analogy, buddy. LOL

Paulie_gualtieri3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

"MS are already working on their own VR tech and it will be revealed at E3. "

Proof?

" how could it be a 2 man race when none of the VR headsets is out yet?"

Both will be out long before microsoft ever finished R&D and released. You know, what i said before you took that part out of context.

christocolus3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

@ zeldas

Have you been reading articles lately? MS has been working on their own version of VR for a while now.. you wouldnt expect them to come out announcing its existence just after sony announced theirs now would you?its well known that theyve been working on similar tech for a while i.e illumiroom and fortazella, their kinect tech team has also been working on something new for months now.. gamespot and polygon also claim to have been informed of its existence by two different sources...and take phils recent comment where he says they have been playing around with the tech for a while now.

Ms is definitly working on theirs...it doesnt take a genius to figure it out.

ThunderSpark3705d ago

I've been working on a VR headset for years now too. See how easy that was. Now where's the proof?

starchild3705d ago

We saw patents of VR devices from Microsoft a long time ago I thought. In any case, Sony claimed they were working on VR for a couple years but we don't have much proof of that either.

I'm not convinced they were working on it in earnest since 2010 because if they were there would be no way they would be so far behind Oculus in announcements and in terms of the tech.

All we know is that Oculus announced first, got dev kits out first, and is ahead in terms of the technical attributes of their VR headset.

TheTwelve3705d ago

Agreed. I thought Microsoft would buy Oculus and I actually think there were about to...but Facebook swooped in.

Rimfro3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Every game company tends to do this. Like how a huge chunk of people on here acted like VR was somehow real after Sony showed off their headset. Nobody really innovates anymore. It's always buyouts and me-too advances, while each of these companies toot their own horn like they've been ready for it all along.

There is no way possible this will end as a win for gamers. Facebook constantly uses tech as a way to get information from you. I'm curious how they plan on using this tech for their nefarious purposes. I don't trust Zuckerberg and feel like he is one of the biggest douchebags in the American corporate landscape. It also shows that Oculus, VR's "passion for gaming" jargon, was all talk. They were shown dollar signs, and jumped at the opportunity to give it all away.

My hype level for VR just dropped to zero. I wish I could get excited for Sony's solution, but I'm not confident that they will properly support it, or that it will be any more functional that the oculus devkit 1. I have one of those, while it's neat, it's too slow and blurry to really be used for any serious gaming.

They've just injected 2 Billion dollar in the word's best VR team (by a long shot). How is this a bad thing?

Why would their focus change: Making the best VR experience possible?

Rimfro3705d ago

Because it's Facebook. When have they done anything for the consumer? They aren't buying Oculus because they are passionate about bringing VR gaming to the masses, they are only interested in pushing Facebook into every facet of our lives. The more connected they are to different mediums, the more they can mine information from you and sell it to the highest bidder. Zuckerberg always has an agenda.

kingduqc3705d ago

@Rimfro

they are looking to diversify themselves so when their social throne get taken away they still live to see another day.

A social app software in VR need the same thing as a VR gaming experience... They won't just close off the open development if they want it to become big.

Wow that's disappointing if true.

weekev153705d ago

See my post above, I don't know how you can say it's disappointing until you see what he has planned. Maybe give the guy a chance before we jump on the Oculus is doomed bandwagon that this will inevitably cause.

ZodTheRipper3705d ago

I know people who deleted Whatsapp after Facebook aquired them. People have valid reasons for concerns.

SourShoes3705d ago

Project Morpheus for sure now. Delusionbook will have every yuppie around wearing an OR.

scott1823705d ago

Agreed, Project Morpheus will probably be the best choice for gamers now. But on the bright side, this may help push VR into the main stream sooner.

Ogygian3705d ago

Oh no! How are all the hipster yuppies going to wear a Rift AND Google Glass at the same time!

Guess we'll see London/New York sushi bistro-delicatessens filled tonight with crying 28-year olds in suits struggling to think how they're going to make this choice (or secretly plotting a Google-Facebook merger).

Rimfro3705d ago

But will Sony support Morpheus better than they have their other gaming peripherals in the past? I, for one, thought move was the superior motion controller, but the support was meager. VR has more potential uses and applications, as well as more general public interest, but going on their record, they'll have to really prove that they aren't just trying to cash in on the next gaming fad. I hope my concerns are unfounded. This is one of those of the cases where I really hope I am wrong.

steve30x3704d ago

People who want a VR headset for PC want Ocolus Rift. As far as I know Morpheus only works on the PS4.

SullysCigar491d ago

Yeah, you've got to be thinking he's used plenty of headsets. Not a bad person to impress!

S2Killinit491d ago

True. And this PSVR seems to be pushing the envelope for VR with its marriage of eye tracking and foveated rendering. I have a feeling the fans are in for a nice surprise.

Neonridr491d ago

100%. I can't wait. This will be my 4th VR headset.

I hope someone can get it working on PC to spread its usability.

Coming from Palmer Luckey that IS big praise indeed.

For the people that try to downplay the original PSVR's success by comparing to total PS4 units, he also said:

"The first PSVR was arguably the biggest success of the generation, this version will do even better".

Sonyslave3491d ago

🤣🤣🤣 spec wise it weaker then what on the market already so, gotta be talking about games.

Profchaos491d ago

How so seems like it's got some features not available anywhere else

Bathyj490d ago

And he says that like it's a bad thing. Aren't games the most important part?

fr0sty490d ago

it has the highest resolution of any currently available headset. Is the only one with eye tracking or foveated rendering... only one with full haptic feedback... sit down.

AmUnRa490d ago

And it works, sonyslave has 10 replays. Some guys like him and Orchad love the attention when they talk negative about Sony cous they get a rush out of it.

Neonridr490d ago

technically it'll be the most advanced VR headset when it's released. Sure there will newer headsets that push the envelope further, but this will be a huge step up from what we have currently.

S2Killinit488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

PSVR2 has the highest specs of any headset outside of the $1500 and above headsets out there which are not aimed at gamers, and even gives those a run for their money due to marriage of foveated rendering+Eye tracking.

It also has specs that the other headsets (even the $1500+ headsets) dont have which are game changers. Foveated rendering+eye tracking, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers.

PSVR2 is the biggest launch in VR and you could tell by the way it was treated at CES by the press and crowd. It also won headset of the show at CES.

Overall PSVR2 specs are well above anything out there currently.

SullysCigar490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

What game(s) specifically are you wanting? Loads of devs have confirmed they're working on patches, many for free, some we don't know yet.

I'd like to hear if this is happening for Superhot, but nothing as of yet.

AmUnRa490d ago

Yeah, by release they have 30 and there are about 100 games in development.
That a sign that developers believe in PSVR2..,,

crazyCoconuts490d ago

I was in the same boat(and still ticked about it), but I caved. I just love tech toys too much to hold that grudge I guess.

shinoff2183490d ago

While it would be nice it's a silly road block imo. Maybe some devs will do a free upgrade or a patch or something but I wouldn't say eh I can't play my psvr games with my psvr2 so f that. It seems this one is gonna do good in the games department so there won't be a shortage or anything.

camel_toad515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

AI advances are really starting to open my eyes to us not even having scratched the surface. But with the field itself growing exponentially and stuff I'd never considered before like putting AI to work finding cures for major diseases - it's exciting but also kinda scary tbh.

More on topic - sentient AI. Creating a digital soul so to speak. Spooky in a what have we done and is it good or bad kind of way.

masterfox516d ago

He is like: "Im done with F#@#$%NG nonsense, pff Metaverse da funk I was thinking!!, Im out!! :D"

Yeah he put a smile in his face too in the end.

Orchard516d ago

I hope he goes back to traditional games.

VR gaming is a flop and the Metaverse has (fortunately) completely failed to take off.

Babadook7515d ago

VR has much more potential than flat screen games. Just need to tap the right market and fund AAA development. Meta is a rotten company though so good to see him leave.

Orchard515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

That's where it becomes a catch-22 problem though. Very few companies (if any) are going to spend AAA amounts of dollars on VR if the market isn't there - and the market isn't there.

If it was the future of gaming we'd see the big publishers getting involved - and basically none of them are.

Agree on Meta 100% - horrible company and I really do hope FB (and social media) dies some day soon.

JackBNimble515d ago

There will never be AAA games until VR sells at the rate of mainstream consoles. Understand that even if Sony do sell 3.5 million VR in the next 2 or 3 years like they hope, that isn't ever going to get any commitments for AAA budget. No investor would ever sign off on that.

Orchard515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

The adoption has been terrible and the market basically non-existent as a result of that.

We're now 10 years into PC VR gaming, 6 years into console VR gaming and it just hasn't taken off - the reality is, most consumers don't care for it.

Even with a huge install base like the PS4, only a few million adopted it, about 3-4%.

ApocalypseShadow515d ago

He only thinks it in his mind. Because Microsoft isn't offering "high fidelity VR." Only Sony is offering "high fidelity VR" because they actually deliver.

I just read today that Honda is moving forward in using VR and has vehicles that were built in VR without an actual real vehicle.

Orchard just doesn't know any better. He claims he's a PlayStation fan but doesn't want Sony to succeed in growing the VR market. But he's okay with Microsoft buying up the industry and game pass. Tell you where his mind is actually at. Or he has investment in it.

But Carmack leaving is only that he was frustrated with higher ups. But he's very interested in AI. And that's a good field of investment too.

JackBNimble515d ago

If any of the big 3 had sales were like VR for their console, they would fold like the Saturn. Right now VR is nothing more then a high priced peripheral and no one should expect AAA for it.

By the way , I am one who would like to see VR succeed, but it has a long way to go before that ever happens.

Orchard515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

@Apocalypse

"Only Sony is offering "high fidelity VR" because they actually deliver."

And the reality is, from what we've seen thus far, the vast majority, about 97% of Sony customers don't care about it in the slightest. They can't even sell out of PSVR2 devices, which are supposedly in short supply. Better to just invest in traditional experiences instead.

"I just read today that Honda is moving forward in using VR and has vehicles that were built in VR without an actual real vehicle."

Yes. And that helps gaming how? I've said time and time again that AR/VR is great for enterprise. Just not great for gaming.

The lack of customers, lack of customer interest, and lack of AAA game companies investing & AAA game experiences being crafted says everything we need to know about the state and future of gaming VR.

tagzskie515d ago

When uncle philly announced true vr experience and demoed fallout 4 in one x, some xboys sings different tune..

Orchard515d ago

@tagzskie Well, those people were wrong.

Knushwood Butt515d ago

'Just not great for gaming.'.

That's your heavily biased opinion. You are in every VR thread trying to project your doom and gloom. Why?

There are many genres where VR is at least equal to or better than flat. VR in a driving game destroys the flat experience.

FPS, horror games, even Tetris is better in VR.

You speak about AAA as if it's the only consideration, moving goalposts.

Capcom.

Are they not a AAA publisher?

Is RE4 not a AAA game? RE7? RE8?

Hofstaderman515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

The Metaverse is one big flop but VR gaming on its own still has steam and growth potential. Remember Mark and his Meta wants you to associate gaming with the meta verse the gaming industry and its large number of users has the capacity to sway the opinion of the mass market.
Incidentally, Meta is haemorrhaging money and expertise that’s what this article is highlighting.

ApocalypseShadow515d ago

See, the problem orchard is that you see what you want to see. Sony sold PSVR at profit. They made money on software. They made money on a 10 year old peripheral. Yeah. It didn't sell 100 million. How many games sell bucket loads when they cost almost 10 times less than PSVR was at launch? That's why the new headset is coming. Before, there was no console VR. There is now. To grow the market, you must keep pushing and not be afraid like Microsoft. Facebook, HTC, ByteDance, Varjo, Valve, Sony, etc are growing the gaming market. Did flat gaming sell millions overnight? No. It took time. Just like any other product. Fads fade. VR is not a fad because it has potential in many areas. Sony doesn't want PS VR 2 to be a Kinect. A fad. Millions on advertising but no substance. It's why PS Move still exists and works on PS5. And Kinect is dead. Move had substance. PSVR had substance. Which is why PS VR 2 exists.

Honda is an example of VR entering other sectors. It's fairly obvious that it "ain't no 3D TV." Bugatti also uses VR as well as other car manufacturers. VR is here to stay. I know it hurts you that it's growing bedsides flat gaming being successful too. Just like mobile.

You just like to lie to yourself and others. VR is in education, in construction, in the automotive industry, medicine, real estate, music.... AND GAMING. The market wasn't there. Now it's here and it's growing in every sector besides gaming. But you want it to jump out there immediately like some viral video or fad. That's not how it works.

Chances are, you developed something, because you call yourself a developer. And no one wanted your product. So you're projecting. But there are other companies and developers who are successful in making VR work. You just sucked at it.

You claim Sony isn't selling out on pre-orders. But you don't even know what numbers they have allocated. Or how many they are producing to meet demand. You just pull it out from you know where and lie to everyone that Sony is failing. Sony has said they will have headsets for launch and not have to worry about production. What do you have that goes against Sony's statements on the matter? Absolutely nothing. Put up your facts against Sony's production lines?

But tell us. What software you made for VR that failed so that we all can know where your mindset is?

Orchard514d ago

@Knush You just highlighted the problem perfectly - the only AAA taking part in console VR is Capcom. Where is COD VR? Battlefield VR, GTA VR? All the big pubs are skipping on it because they don’t believe in its future - if they did they’d be investing in it now.

@Apocalyspe At the time I thought MS were insane for not getting into VR, but looking back on it, given where we are now, that seems like a very smart decision.

Honda making VR for car showrooms or whatever means nothing for gaming. The vast majority of gamers - PS gamers included - don’t care in the slightest about VR. The numbers show that.

I’ve never worked on a VR game nor do I want to. The market being non-existent means salaries are substantially lower when compared to AAA salaries. I wouldn’t take the pay cut - I’ve been in AAA since graduating college, and I intend to keep it that way.

But that’s also the good point of being a developer, ultimately it doesn’t really matter to me if the game sells well or poorly - I still get paid the same at the end of the day.

It’s funny that you mention Kinect because I consider the Kinect a failure too - but it still had 4x the sales of PSVR and a way higher attach rate.

We are supposedly still in the tail end of a chip shortage, so clearly we would expect a new device like PSVR to sell out - Sony themselves were too or they wouldn’t have done invites to get one initially - they thought it was going to be difficult for people to get one (so did many on here) but when it turned out it wasn’t they opened it up to everyone.

Clearly it isn’t moving as many units as they’d anticipated.

Come talk to me when we’re all sitting in our living rooms with VR headsets on and the attach rate is so high they ship it in the box as the default controller method - so I guess I won’t ever be hearing from you again :p

Knushwood Butt514d ago

I agree with you. I remember when Second Life was as the dogs bollocks and big business had store fronts or ambassador land parcels but soon discovered that it was pie in the sky. Second Life is still operational but only frequented by a stagnant population of people who were with it since it’s launch. New people sign up to try it out but tend to not stay. People want to browse the internet or use it to play games not live in it.

Flight sim inside of a vr hmd... could be interesting. Would the game had to have been built to support VR for the in game cockpit view to look around when you move your head?

ApocalypseShadow582d ago (Edited 582d ago )

It's not VR. It flat games on a screen in VR.

This was probably a deal since Facebook is encroaching on their territory of business. Putting their windows software and xcloud on Quest Pro using Microsoft's controller is a concession.

Eventually, you might see VR cloud streaming as it's already done with things like shadow PC.

This is no different than Microsoft when they tried to push games on Xbox one in VR. Which wasn't VR. Just flat.

crazyCoconuts582d ago

I think the thing that's gonna keep VR from being streamable anytime soon is the bandwidth required and the sensitivity we have in VR to latency. 120FPS with a tiny bit of lag is virtually impossible to pull off over a WAN, especially with the ever increasing resolutions we're coming to expect.

WeAreLegion582d ago

It's incredible. Highly recommend.

crazyCoconuts582d ago

I think technically MS could map head movement to mouse input, but wouldn't work with controller input, which will probably be what you're limited to, given that the games are running on xbox and you couldn't use a keyboard with the headset on practically anyway. Sorry - long way of saying probably not.

Star51582d ago

Sadly this is not VR gaming but similar to Netflix in VR. Useful if you want to game in a 3D living room on a 2D screen. Maybe heavy usage will prompt developers to offer VR upgrades on old games.

crazyCoconuts582d ago

True regarding Netflix in VR. Probably won't even take up the whole screen, but will be played on a virtual monitor.
Developers can't offer VR upgrades in the way you're saying though- Quest is like an android phone running an xbox streaming app similar to your phone. There's no path to VR from there unfortunately

spicelicka582d ago

They need to start putting actual VR games on Gamepass. Could get a share of the VR market as well.
