VR Needs to Shed Its Gamified Skin for Mass Adoption

There's more to VR than video games. But it's also VR's niche as a console which holds the platform back from mass adoption worldwide.

I love my VR headsets (Index, PSVR). They offer experiences only found via that platform. They also take existing games and give you an entirely new way to enjoy them (Hitman, RE7, etc). Will VR replace 2D gaming? No. Does everyone have to enjoy and/or support VR? No. But I am glad we have choices.

Last I checked, it was the price and space needed to use them that holds the platform back from mass adoption worldwide.

price is quite reasonable nowadays. And space required may depend on the title, but plenty of games can be played in a sitting or even standing in place. So no more than a few feet in each direction. Not every game has you walking around some 10' x 10' play area.

The price on top of a PC or console isn't reasonable for most people. We're not talking about year 1 console owners here. The normies.

And 5'x5' space is an issue in most situations. Heck, I can't even do it without moving my cocktail table, and my cocktail table holds most of my tech devices.

Quest 2 doesn't require a PC, it's self contained. Sure you can use a link cable if you want to get the most out of the headset, but no additional purchases on top of the unit itself are technically required to start enjoying VR.

Now we're trying to sell up the worst and most limited version of PC VR as an option? Let alone that VR is not a primary means of gaming, so those people still invest in PC/console games with way more options, especially in the MP scene.

Neonridr1202d ago

@Christopher - why is it the most limited? It can be used connected to your PC, or it can be used on it's own. Show me another VR set that's capable of doing that?

VR is great but to need a Facebook account just to use Oculus is stupid I honestly hate Facebook have no Facebook account and I don't plan on creating one. Grabbed a PSVR Summer Lesson is really good also played RE7 and I liked it as well.

could always go with a Valve Index if you don't want to go the FB route (even though the Quest 2 is a superb system).

I'm still not into VR. I just love playing my video games on a big screen while relaxing on the couch or on my bed.

Just recently finished playing Immortals of Aveum on PSplus extra, can definitely recommend it to those who like fps magic wielding type games, it's really good.

I own & played Immortals Of Aveum & Lords Of The Fallen already. The only game on that list I'm going to try is Hellblade 2.
