@CombatEvolving

She's still portrayed as an all-out badass. Just look at what she does in the game.

They are just using words now to explain the character. And to be honest, it's been this way, even within the game. Samus shows her emotional immaturity all the way back in Return of Samus. She can't bring herself to finish the job, leaves one baby Metroid alive, illegally transports it back to the Galactic Federation, and what happens? Comes b...

One more. They need to do one more. Why? For the same reason the original Metroid needed Super Metroid -- to polish up the template and refine it.

I really like Other M, but it isn't without flaws. The third-person "concrete boots" sections and the FP pixel hunting weren't that hard, IMO, but they really broke momentum. They could've been left on the cutting room floor. The story isn't as bad as it's made out to be, but we don't need th...

:sigh:

Con2 better be REALLY good. I know they have to put food on the table, but this is why they have the reputation they do. You make quick cash-ins and shovelware, and you get a rep as a dev that makes sub-par games.

Why is it always videogames? Never the things they are hooked up to? How many hours a day to people spend in front of the goggle box? I know I spend way too much time in front of it, doesn't matter if it's with a game controller in my hand or not.

But that doesn't sound good as a political slogan. Too many people watch TV, so it's better to insult the smaller, younger demographic that plays games, I guess. Whatever.

This.

For better or worse, the entire direction of Other M is from Sakamoto-san. From the control scheme, to the story, to Samus' look in cut scenes, to the gravity suit now glowing purple.

I understand the desire for Samus to be the strong, silent type. The thing is, she still is for the most part (SPOILER: only when losing someone close to her -- almost family -- does she get truly emotional). She's still pretty laconic while speaking t...

It's a very, very good game, and a very, VERY ambitious game. But it does not top Super or Prime, IMO. Those two are still at the top of the Metroid food chain. But Other M is in the next tier, which isn't a bad place to be.

This game feels very much like the original Metroid to me -- an ambitious design that may have been impossible to fully nail on the first try.

The story is very "Japanese," in that it wouldn't feel out of place in a JPRG. Lots and lots of inner-monologue and personal regret.

I didn't mind it, but I know others have. At least this reviewer doesn't get into the idiotic "sexist" claim (Samus is working under a superior officer here).

This.

It's not just on Wii games (I recently saw an article complaining about Mafia II not being more like GTA; apparently they didn't play the first one!), but sometimes they seem to get a bit more hate. Other M has been called everything from "sexist" to a grand mistake that besmirches the series.

Did these people miss just how ambitious the game design is? Really, show me another game that transitions from side-scrolling to ty...

@SilentNegotiator,

Of course I've commented a lot about this game. It's my most anticipated game of the year. And having beaten it (y'know, played through the whole thing, unlike a lot of reviewers, apparently), I think I have a fair idea of some fairly basic things about it.

Not the subjective portions of a game review, but the OBJECTIVE parts. Like the location of the cut scenes in this game, the auto aim not being more forgiving than any oth...

:sigh:

See, THIS is the problem when someone plays the first part of the game, quits at that point, and writes their review.

I'm sure this writer would respond "no, of course I played all of it!" but I'd still call bullsh*t. The cut scenes are concentrated at the very beginning and very end of the game. The 10 hours in between? They're few and far between, and it's a whole lotta GAME.

Likewise, Other M gets DIFFIC...

It's quite ambitious. Not just "another Metroid." There isn't another game quite like this one. I suppose they could've gone ahead and made a new IP, but there's a reason some franchises stick around so long -- they're able to evolve.

Shame on you for writing this laughable review.

Yep, another positive review...that barely gets any attention on here...and won't show up on metacritic or anything (I've seen a ton of 8, 8.5 and 9's show up on here that never get added in).

It seems like a lot of people heard "digital controls" and "Samus talks," and decided to just write this game off. Self fulfilling prophecy, I guess. If you make up your mind about a game before you get a chance to play it, you're setting yourself u...

I'm trying to remember where I read/heard it...it was either in Iwata Asks, the developer interview or one of the in-print interviews...but I think Sakamoto said he was trying to find in-house help to make Other M, but people at Nintendo didn't quite see eye-to-eye with him or understand exactly what he wanted. Then he met with Team Ninja, and he and Hayashi saw eye-to-eye almost immediately. Hence Project M.

I don't think it's animosity toward him within th...

Pretty much.

No story, no voice work?
"Nintendo is lazy!"

Deep story with voice work?
"It's not the story and VA I wanted!"

I'm kinda perplexed that people have ragged on Other M's story and voice acting so much. There actually IS maturity in Metroid's story; it's about emotional depth and relationships, not jiggle physics and one liners. The voice work is a little stiff at the beginni...

Beat it (again) a few weeks ago in anticipation of Other M. There are very few games I would call "perfect," but Super is an exception. I can't think of anything R&D1 could've done to improve upon it.

It's great that the VC is giving so many more gamers a chance to play it.

I was just about to click this to watch...but seriously with the sexism? Fer the love of FSM, look what you'd wrought G4. It isn't "sexist" to take orders from a COMMANDING officer...y'know, especially one you deeply respect.

Same here. Since I'm a 'Troid junkie, I had set myself up for a "really good, but not great"-type of experience after reading so many reviews.

But I really, really like it. So far, at least. It feels exactly like I imagined a Sakamoto-helmed 3D Metroid to feel. And that's a great thing.

However, I understand that it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. Metroid usually isn't, tbh.

One nitpick with th...
