To say the 360 has sold more then the PS3 is misleading - in the same 'timeframe' the PS3 has actually sold more, considering the 360 has been out a year longer and is only roughly 7million units ahead.
There is a reason the 360 is experiencing a drastic price cut like this - its not competing well. PS2 was able to fair well after its initial spurt of success, but they had a more steady catalogue of games.

Epic only had a two game deal w/ MS - which kinda sucks when you consider Gears2 was just a flash in the pants.
From a devs point of view I would imagine it is pretty significant to know how many people actually own a console as opposed to how many have been shipped to retailers.
I'm not saying people are buying this just for the beta.
The point is, even if they want to, they'll be reluctant to sell it because they are waiting on the beta, which will in turn keep the prices for this game inflated.
There really is no practical reason for putting the beta access on the disc - a code would work just as fine.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not really a huge Halo fan, I don't play the online that much, but its still decent in its own right when you consider how extensive it is. Compared to a lot of other online games it holds its own - plenty of levels and features.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that there is no trailer for Halo Reach, I heard the MS put the beta key on the disc to keep the value up so people wouldn't trade it in.
I'm sorry, but I think its kind of sad that we are resorting to praise Halo for its 'story'. This game doesn't even progress the overall arc of Halo's 'story'.

MS could have easily price structured differently, they aren't even willing to sell the MP levels online - you need to shell out the 60 bucks if you want it.

There is very little that actually seperates Halo from other shooters, the only thing this game has going for it is brand recognition.
I feel sorry for people that are still playing Halo 3. At least play Gears of War 1 or something, jeez. Don't be a bunch of sheep, just because a game is hyped doesn't mean you have to play it.
