The game got review bombed when it was first able to be reviewed for user scores.
20,000+ people didn’t beat the game. 20,000 people who gave the game a 0-4 did so because they just don’t like the direction the game took and now they cried about it.
I don’t think they ‘faked’ trailers. They probably had a trailer and decided to go with a different story because they felt it would do better.

But lets sit down and be real about this. Neil probably had about 2-4 stories for the game. These were probably focus tested. The one that released is probably the one that was the most well received. I’m about 6-7 hours in the game. I just got to the Theater after the tunnels. I can say there isn’t much for emotional story beats up ...
You play the games for the unique experience. MP games only offer so much for replayability until the experience becomes the same...
