GTA IV for the Playstation 3, having Freezing Errors?

Matthew Griffin at PSN At Home reports "Alright, so I got home from the midnight release with my copy of GTA IV Collectors Edition unpacked it live on the feed installed and guess what, it froze! I tried a couple more times and it even have reinstalled 3 times, it still keeps freezing. I am not alone, from the looks of it, it is the 60 GB Launch PS3 that is having the problems and might be just the Collectors Edition of GTA IV. Jeffrey Tavares has the regular edition and a launch PS3 and is now running the Live Feed. I will keep everyone up to date as much as possible!"

UPDATE: It looks like there are multiple assumptions. First off it is not only the Collectors Edition, so far though I have only heard of 60 GB version freezing. Although thing which is the latest I have heard from Tech Support is that it may be a Shotty Batch of games that have been sent to GameStop. It's not just the collectors version, the normal one freezes mine just after or during the opening cutscene. deleting and reinstalling does nothing to stop it. Did they even bother to test these on 60 launch systems?

I had planned on going out and picking this up tomorrow morning, but I might wait a few days now, depending on how this story plays out. I'm still gonna get it, but I've been waiting too eagerly for too long for this game. If it were to crash on me after so much waiting, I think I'd throw my console through a window (...and then run outside to get it, apologizing to it, praying it still works).

I think it's most likely a bad batch. This seems pretty far from a majority issue, and the story has been updated to say it happened on some 360's too. Has to be an issue on Rockstar's end.

At least I won't be one of the 360 guys spinning this all to hell. I had a blast playing the game in single player on my 360 and after my first date with the girl, I decided to grab my cellphone and click the multiplayer and wow it jumped right in and found me a server to kill some other players. I had so much fun. 16 players galore. Was lag free. Lots of dieing on everyones part. I got run down by a car and was blown to smitherines with a bazooka. It was fine first 2 multiplayer battles. Our 3rd multiplayer battle finished and when it went to the score screen, it froze, but we could all hear each other talking. We asked the host to click options and he said the options button wasn't there any more. I had to close out the game to get back into it. =(

I'm sure MS, Sony, and Rockstar are working together to get our first patch out asap so that peeps can get their gaming on with as little glitcthes as possible. Good gaming everyone. Hope you all have better luck than I did. =)

My UPDATE: Thank you to the writer of this story for providing the phone number. That was kinda cool. I called the 866 number and someone from the UK (I live on the east coast USA) answered and immediately he took my issue and I told him what I told you all here on this thread, just a minute after posting it and he told me that they will be taking more calls and work out what needs to be done with the patch to get things going. So, KUDOS to Rockstar for being on top of this matter.

And lastly do make sure you tell them which game system you have so that it helps them better tailor how to program the patches that need to be done to fix our respective systems' problems.

I got my copy, installed it, played for like 5 min and it crashed and it keeps crashing, not only does it crash, i put in my friends disc AND IT CRASHED AGAIN!!!!

Sounds like a bad Blu-Ray. Bioshock had some problems with it too. More than likely you'll have to get a new one. It's doubtful it's a hardware error.

An update won't fix it btw. Call the take two support or the number given and you should get a new one shipped to you.

The game crashes during the intro. And it doesnt get through to allow me any control - ever.

GTAIV may be a bad copy, like the Halo3 discs. Copies are easily replaced with a walk to the store. 360's aren't.

One thing we can all be sure of, is that no matter what happens, somehow it will be Microsoft's fault even if it happens on the PS3 version of the game.

The guy probably owns an Xbox 360 and had it on and it produced so much heat from across the room that it destroyed the lasers in the PS3's bluray disk drive so it has a small chance of freezing every time GTA IV is run on the most perfect console ever created.

I've been playing GTA IV on the 360 since this AM with no problems and I love how people are trying to say the 360 version is freezing now too. While it might be one or 2 persons having problems because that is the way most things work but this is not the same problem the PS3 version is having.

It really sucks for people who have the PS3 version of the game and I do feel bad for them. I'm just glad I got the 360 version instead of the PS3 version.

Seven wasn't at my house, he was watching the Live Feed I was doing for psnathome.com in which they watched me re-install it 3 times and saw it lock up 4 times. It's definitely true. I wouldn't even be on here if it wasn't.

I got home at 12:30, installed it, watched the opening cutscene, and right as Niko goes to get in the car, the video glitches for just a sec, then freeze-frames while the audio continues.

I restarted the game, skipped the cutscene, drove to the "mansion", and it froze during the next cutscene, right after Roman crushes a roach.

Restart, re-install, freezes as I'm driving.

Restart, change video settings to component. Freezes with Grand Theft Auto IV on the screen, audio continuing.

I test out another game, R:FoM, and it plays buttery smooth like it always has. Get through a level, watch the cutscenes to make sure transitions are still working, pop in GTAIV again.

Watch in pain as it freezes.

Restart, AV cables, 480i (ew), freezes as Roman crushes the roach.

I suspect its got to do with the harddisk installation 'cos I don't know of any of the larger population of 360 gamers having lock-ups whereas quite a number of the smaller population of PS3 owners have already complained about the problem. Since the 360 is capable of running the game without resorting to a harddisk installation, then the problem shouldn't arise for 360 version.

Although it is not confirmed and if everyone just sat around doing nothing it would take a hell of a lot longer for the Tech Support and Rockstar in general to figure it out. With us trying out all of these things I believe it helps them narrow it down... also as a GAP member I believe it is my job to test bugs.

what, nobody has ever heard of some games being bad? my copy is running fine on a launch 60 gig ps3. but on the ps2 i once got a bad copy of madden and my first copy of resident evil 4 froze on a cutscene half-way through the game!! replayed to the same point 3 times before i took it back to gamestop. next copy never had that trouble. check the updates on this story. 360 game is having same isolated trouble. don't blow this out of proportion. if you get a bad copy of the game, take it back and get a replacement as soon as you can. but, i don't believe it's ps3 or x360 system related. it's just a bad game. well, my break is over, and i'm going back to the game.

Something happen when the game was being burned onto the Blu-ray. Stuff like this happens all the time, remember the 360 version of bully had the same issue. It sucks if you get a crappy disc, just take it back and get a new disc. so you have to wait a few hours get over it.

Yeah, Since the problem seems to happend where the cutscenes are, I think the disc data got mixed up. x360/ps3 video format on the wrong discs? That would be 'hilarious'

I wouldn't rule out that it is a console problem. My PS3 has hung many times - while using internet browser, while doing a software update (which takes a godawful long time), while playing a simple game like World Championship Snooker, while playing American Idol and most recently while initializing Pain on start up. I've had to restart my PS3 so many times that I can't discount those as 1-off incidents.

The reason it doesn't seem to be console related, is because the disc is actually recognized by the console. If it were a problem with the laser or HDD, first the disc wouldn't register and if it were the HDD there would be a yellow light at boot up that shows that the HDD is F*CKED.

Its a bad burn, go get a new disc and it should be fine.

But yeah I've had those hang ups when exiting from the browser as well and the reason that happens is because the browser uses a lot of the memory available for secondary purposes (OS, etc) its even worse if you go on a site that uses a bunch of flash and Java ads cause those are the sites that tend to put a large memory cache on the ram and when making the transition out of the browser to the XMB there is not enough free memory to have those 2 things open at once, BOOM! crash!.

I've been behaving really good lately. What would it take to start getting some bubbles back? lol I used to try to defend the 360 because some sony peeps really do talk trash about the 360, but apparently when you defend the inferior game system for all of the good that it has, the larger population of my friends from the Sony camp hit negative bubbles on me.

I've been playing for 4 hours and not one problem. Been invited into my girls house three time (hot coco...no coffee) stole about 15 cars, played a couple games of pool, played a game of bowling, completed a handful of missions, got kicked out of the strip club (yeah, that really happened), went to a cabaret/magic show and drove while drunk and watched a little tv after going shopping.

2 Reasons that come to mind why this is happening. (1) his HDD is starting to die. HDD's are very unpredictable. You could have a HDD run forever without any problems or you could have a HDD run for 10 seconds before it dies. Also the signs of a dieing HDD is data starts to get corrupt. (2) the machine that burnt his copy and all the other batch of disks could have had a problem and needs reinitializing.

I am going to pick up a copy of the game in 20 minutes and I will tell you all if mine is broken or not with my 60 gig PS3 I bought in august.

PS all fanboys are the same. If anything bad is said about their favourite they will shout abuse at the fanboys of the other console. This blog is a good example of fanboyism.

The game has been freezing, but it has been freezing more on 360, say the reports.

Even more, they scream "630p", which is ironic, considering it looks better on PS3. They should have lowered 360s resolution to make it look at least as good, even when the 360 is inferior doing AA.

Anyway, what 360 users can't rejoice about, is that they can't import, in case you live in Australia where the game is censored.

Even worse for you Xbots, there's no rrod on PS3.

ok, same issue here, I got the game from midnight launch at futureshop in toronto, i got an 80 gig. Normal edition, it froze the 1st time during installation then i restarted my console and it installed just fine.

so far, i haven't had any problems with GTAIV. i played for about 2.5-3 hours last night, and didn't come across any framerate issues, pop in, or freezes, thankfully.

i wouldn't doubt that issues like this happen, as it's a new game, a huge game, and bound to have some imperfections. my heart goes out to those folks that are having issues, because it's truly a great game, and we've all been waiting a LOOONG time for this game (360 and PS3 fans alike).

hopefully Rockstar will isolate the issue, and if it's software related(hopefully, that's the case), they'll be able to issue a patch for both versions of the game and fix it.

I sold my xbox360 after it broke for the fourth time, i went on launch day to get the ps3 and after fourteen months i have to say what a load of crap, i have know bought an elite and i'm having fun again, but got to laugh at the sony fanboys as they got one game out of about a hundred that looks perhaps a little bit brighter on ps3 and well there really think that the ps3 is better, got to say NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER , as good as the xbox360 games look ten times better on xbox that's why i came back.

I have a 60gb PS3 from early Feb. '07 I bought the game at 10am Est from BestBuy this morning and played it 3-4 hours with no issues.

The majority of the people with the issue seemed to have purchased the disc from gamestop and have boughten the special edition. Could that be the problem.

Also are you connecting with HDMi or Component cables. As one poster said above it could be the screen resolution settings that you have selected. I don't see a point in forcing settings and I let the games take their default resolution. Are those of you having the issue forcing screen resolution?

Also those with the 360 lockup, where did you guys buy it from. I'm wondering if it was the same batch of discs that were just bad or read as bad burn in when creating the disc.

Just some thoughts of mine on the subject. I can't wait to get out of work tonight and get back to the hilarious game of GTA IV ... the TV shows alone will have you cracking up, my favorite so far is The Rich on CNT

Even if you haven't yet had any lock-ups or other problems, you probably will sooner or later as I found out. I think its something to do with the game itself and hopefully they can address this problem ASAP with an update.

I have both GTAIV for my PS3 and 360 and problem occurs on both machines so its not the hardware itself. Anyways, hope they fix it soon.

PS3 (60GB) froze twice... then I deleted the installation from the Game Data Utility then re-installed and it's been fine for the past 2 hours.

I hope R* patch this... it's not very acceptable really. I also can't connect to Multiplayer.

This is also happening to me and the same thing happened to me when I first started playing Spiderman 3 the day i bought it...i waited it out like 3 days and it stopped freezing...I just think it needs to adapt to being played, so just wait a couple days and save frequently and hopefully the freezing will stop...

guys, aside from all the comparisons and what not, this game is so much f*cking fun. Just got a couple of missions in but the game is so much of an improvement from the previous ones. I love running away from the cops. One thing I gotta learn is to not jump out of the car while moving, I keep getting the triangle button confused with the up arrow to make a call for some reason but its fun. Anyways have fun playing it, Im going back in. I might try Multiplayer in a bit. Game on gamers

60 gig launch PS3 with a new 300 gig HD swapped few weeks ago.
I played the first 5 missions and then I went online. NO problems so far.

A colleague of mine invited me to his house to check his version of GTA IV for 360. I noticed some pop in here and there and less blur effect in the background. Framerate is quite unstable on the 360 especially in crowded areas. But probably is the same on the PS3 but I just didn't noticed.

UPDATE: got a call from my buddy his 360 just RROD-ed. He was pissed as hell. I invited him to my place and we are playing one mission each. He brought his 360 in hope to find some fix.

UPDATE 2: We used the towel trick and the 360 seems back to life. Finger crossed he can keep on playing his game at home tonight.

ok , i purchased the game yesterday played for about an hour , nothing happened, i saw this news today , i thought it was only for 60gb or 20gb , then i put my Gta 4 disc and starting playing for about 2 hours while driving the game just freeze had to restart my ps3 , then played it for 30 min while quitting the game my ps3 did beep 3 times and restarted. i have the 40gb model did purshase it from 2 months :S
