i think its safe to say if u have 360 then buy that version or else get the ps3 version, if u have both then also 360 version has better advantage because u have the option to get extra and achievements while ps3 will get their trophies in fall(about frame rate and loading times and pop up am still not sure about it about it seems the ps3 have an edge in that also), if u dont have any console yet and thinking to which one u should buy then u should think which games u wanna play after GTA4!!

gameplay is a completely different matter thats where your actions control whats happening in the enviroment around you,thats when unfortunately as been highlighted in numerous reviews one console has worse framerate and pop up which DOES have a massive impact on your experience of the game.

youtube has some videos of the crazy pop up a certain console version has its actually terrible and knowing a certain other console doesnt have that would pi$$ me off big time a patch needs to brought out and soon

how would we be dissapointed personally i have all next gen systems and i favor my 360. Even if the ps3 has slightly better colors you have to remeber it not like all of us gamers are running the game on the same tv with different setting so you wouldnt notice any difference. Plus we have 20 hours of exlcusive never coming to ps3 new story branch coming starting in autumn of this year ( $50 million guarantees its never coming to the ps3) . Another thing if ps3 get some sort of dlc that doesnt mean it wont come to the 360 because sony never struck a deal so in all likely hood we'll probably get what your having and more. P.S. i usually dont sound like a fanboy but im tired of hearing people on this ite trying to put down the good things about the 360 version all the while boasting about some minute advantage the ps3 supposedly has.

The two games look practically the same. I still not sure on the pop up as the videos we have seen of the 360 version are from pirated versions.

The reviews have said that there is more pop up on the 360 which is obviously down to the fact Ms have not allowed Rock star to use the hardrive to install the game to but i think with the caching the 360 hd does without the install and the faster speed of the dvd drive there should be minimal difference.

Therefore it comes down to six axis,slightly less pop up or dlc.
I choose Dlc as this is gonna be game of the year most likely so im definately gonna want to expand it.

Going down for the midnight launch for this one hope everyone manages to get there copy and to all A GOOD NIGHT AND ENJOY THE ROLLER COASTER WHILE IT LASTS.

....face goes between the two versions at one point in the video, you can really see what they meant by warmer coolers. Niko's face has a more realistic look on PS3 in my opinion. His face on the 360 side seemed pale. The rest of the video wasn't really good at comparing. That was the only moment that was good enough to compare.

But the bottom line is its hard for me to commit my purchase to a 360 version based solely off DLC when i don't know what the DLC is and how extensive it will be. So far the hints point at extra missions and after spending probably 60hrs in the game do i really want to pay for an extra 10hrs? If the game is really that good, somewhere along the line, i will probably be playing through the game again anyway so i doubt i will miss the 10hrs much.

IGN said the PS3 version has FAR less pop in and i doubt they were playing on the core units when they made that statement. With that news alone, it makes me more confident of my ps3 choice because before now i thought it would run better on 360 since they weren't showing ps3 footage. At the end of the day the only thing i will be missing from 360 version are awesome achievments

I just got it (midnight release in uk) and looking at the PS3 version in a vacuum, its really impressive. Regardless of anything you hear, read, zoomed in pictures and videos or anything else, you will not be disappointed in this game from a technical standpoint. I followed the advice of the reviews and got the version that had (for me) the largest friend base. Forget all the fanboy crap and enjoy the game because whatever comes out of this in terms of details between versions, non of it can make either game better or worse unless you are all just comparing penis sizes.

Let's face it, anyone can buy the 'other console' if the need (or game) really arises so what's the point?

The color thing really comes down to a matter of opinion I think. I like the look of the PS3 version better. But not so much b/c of the color... the better anti-aliasing on the PS3 version does make a pretty distinct difference to me... Looks much sharper. if the 630p claim is accurate, posters in that thread who have more knowledge than me are saying the 360 version should have been downscaled as well so more post processing could be applied, because the ps3 version is obviously superior.

Sorry, I don't mean to come across that way.

I'm just frustrated that people are so blinded by their fanboy biases that they can't just put their differences aside and enjoy an incredible game. Who cares about a little AA here or a pop-in there? The game is INCREDIBLE, on both platforms. Which means MORE people get to enjoy it.

I always thought the PS3 got a bad rap last year, simply because the ports weren't going that well because designing for the PS3 has a huge learning curve - not because the PS3 was inherently underpowered. Because it's clearly not.

For the record, I do think this will be the time in video game history people point to in the future and say "This is when PS3 games starting looking better than 360 games". I just don't think the differences are important enough, in the case of GTA4, to choose one version over the other unless you own both consoles and EVERYTHING ELSE is equal. Even a controller preference should outweigh these minor graphical differences.

the graphics difference may be a minor BUT the pop up and FR issues are something else. My point. When sOme review sites mentioned fr issues with ps3 versions and deducted marks, those issues were never significant enough to warrant the .x less in marks that they gave. Most of the time it never changed the way the game played. Some people could see that as a convenient shift of the goalposts. Please can you two say the same thing when its the other way around as its only fair.

Does a game has to be on a specific console to be a good game? Does it need an excellent "metacritics score" to be a good game? The answer to these questions is: NO! A "good game" is always subjective, IMHO. I know enough people who will not buy GTA as they do not like it. And I know others who enjoyed playing LAIR. So just play what you like, and let the others play what they like.

Understandably I too wonder why it can't be that way anymore.
I like having the metacritic only to see what is the average of the gaming reviews. It isn't the deciding factor of whether or not I get a game. Obviously since I have Lair and actually enjoy it, the main annoyance is the cutscenes losing track of my target I was about to kill. Metacritic is a tool and nothing more, but like any tool it can be used in the wrong way and taint the actual intent of the tool.

I think it's an instinct in especially men to defend their honor and justify their means of why they are doing it. In this particular case it happens to be people and a plastic machine that plays games.

Are the 2 systems that you can play this game on different? Yes they are and everyone has personal preference which is why there is always choice. That choice is for everyone to decide and once someone commits to that system they feel they need to show why their choice is best. Honestly from their perspective the choice they made is the best choice for them. Unfortunately there are people that no matter the consequences have to show why the system is the best choice and they won't back down.

The stem of the problem is "money". That money is what drove internet sites and magazines to form these groups and pit them against each other in order to get more hits on their website or more magazines sold.

But I digress. You make a valid point and hopefully gamings roots can return in some fashion or another to where people are happy about gaming and getting to play the games on whatever system they own or don't own.

PS3 is more warm like people have been saying including myself. PS3 has the *WARM* look(redish orange tints) PS3 looks slightly unnatural when it comes to warmth that makes things like Skin and sunlight or any light seem overly red which is what *warm* generally is anyways.

The PS3 version seems so overly warm it makes the 360 version look washed out, looks like Viking Asgard or RD Grid.

Atleast these guys had sense enough to compare these games in the same setting.

It's a GTA game. Cutscenes are all in-engine. So the graphics comparison is valid. Also, as #5 says below - they've played both versions, this cutscene was just used for a video comparison. After all, with an open-world game like GTA, it's hard to 'sync up' two versions to do a direct comparison without relying on a cutscene such as this.

After all, there's weather to account for, as well as pedestrians, time of day, etc.

I've watched a ton of 360-specific gameplay footage and noticed little, if any, pop-in or framerate issues. I've yet to see anything that indicates serious pop-in problems besides those animated GIFs.

The video game media LOVES controversy. If they could find some video of the 360 version with serious FPS drops or pop-in, they would post it. As far as I've seen, no such video exists.

Personally I could care less if there is a 1%, 2%, or even a 5% difference between the average reviews of each version. Different websites use the 1-10 scale much differently.

It will be interesting to see the difference once all the reviews are in. I imagine the PS3 version will come through a % or two higher in the end, but I also couldn't care as long as one version ends up one of the highest rated games ever, because that would just be awesome for all gamers.

The only difference I could see on this vid was the PS3's color is slightly warmer in tint (more red). That's it, & that can be tweaked on your tv, whichever way you personally like it regardless of your console. They both looked great, R* did a fantastic job !

A real test is to test the PS3 version in 1080p mode...against the xbox 360 version...since you can not force the xbox 360 into 1080p mode...the xbox 360 version already upscales to 1080p

Now the Ps3 version could be upscalled to 1080p or not...but why would they miss the 1080i mode?

Also you can see all the pop in and pop up in all the videos of the Xbox 360 version...come on xbox 360 people get over it...you will see lots of popup and frame rate issues in this game....most publications are covering it up...you will see tommorrow at 12 am...

We will see pixel counters and video comparisons in the next few days too...but we got to get the people testing the PS3 version to force the 1080p mode in this game.

There was a story posted about it, but it failed approval because the Sony Defense Force made sure to spam/lame report it to death since the story link was to a forum post at Beyond3d.

...the ironic thing is that the *very same guy* who made the 630p GTA4 PS3 discovery also made the Halo 3 640p discovery *on the exact same forum* and THAT story was posted (and approved) here on N4G. That Halo 3 story later went on to accumulate almost 300 comments and hit 1220 degrees.

So yes, the PS3 version runs natively at 1120x630p and the 360 version runs natively at 720p. That means the Ps3 has almost 1,000,000 less pixels on screen at any given moment (or 23% less) than the 360 version.

That's not necessarily a bad thing - a lower resolution could free up resources, allowing a developer the ability to increase anti-aliasing, for example. COD4 was only 600p and it looks fantastic. Halo 3 was 640p and it looks great, too.

...It does throw a wrench into the 'PS3 version looks better because of technical superiority' arguement, however. The game is running at a lower resolution. Fact.

Well of course they are supposed to look the same; they are cutscenes after all which have frame rate caps, controlled special effects, and controlled environments. Anyway, the way I see it, PS3 fanboys will get their say during April-May (when the slightly better on PS3 GTAIV comes out) while 360 fanboys will get their say during the fall (when the exclusive DLC comes out), so be prepared for a lot of flaming during those two periods of time. The releases of MGS4 and GeoW 2 will probably be what kills the GTAIV version wars; though they will probably sprout off MGS4/GeoW 2 bashings.

ps3 looks more real/clear. no offense but thats realistic lighting in a dark room with a light bulb and a lamp shade, as niko walks across the room the light doesnt hit him realistically in the 360 one. and as you notice towards the end when nikos standing by the door the ps3 one is not orange any more but more textured than the 360s with more detail to the face. watch as he he says "screw you, you idiot" his face becomes cleared in the ps3 version, dam i should be a professional.

The PS3 Version looks the best to me.
PS3 has better lighting and more textures than the 360.
360 may have DLC but the PS3 has the better graphics and a more appealing line up on top of that in 2008 so it's easy to say Sony has a upper hand in this game.
Personally I don't like GTA at all I'd rather have Rockstar's next game L.A Noire which is PS3 Exclusive than this game.

GTA4 just plays better on the PS3. You guys will have your extra missions for a decent fee and that's that.

The game plays and feels better on the PS3, it has much less framerate, much less jaggies and no pop-ups. You guys got the short end of the stick because you have the DLC which will be just a waste of money.

PS3 is the only true next-gen system the Wii and 360 shouldn't even be considered next-gen consoles. First off the Wii and 360 still use an old format called DVD which only holds 4.7 gbs of data or 9gb on dual layer disc, the PS3 uses Blu-ray which holds 25gb of data or 50gb on dual layer disc. The Wii has no hdmi port which is necessary for the future while the 360 has an hdmi port 1.2 and the PS3 has an hdmi port that supports 1.3a. The differences first off 1.2 supports 16.7 million colors while 1.3a supports over 1 billion colors. 1.2 cant use Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master Audio and it cant support 7.1 surround sound, while on the other hand hdmi 1.3a supports all that plus more. hdmi 1.2 can only support 1920x1080p60fps maxed out while 1.3a supports 2560x1600p60fps maxed out. An added bonus about 1.3a also supports x.y.Color and Deep Color which 1.2 dosent. 1.3a also has a way higher transfer rate and bit rate compared to 1.2. Also the 360 has 3 core processors which is old news considering Intel makes Quad Core Processors while the PS3 has the revoluntionary Cell processor which has 8 and the Wii has a weak processor we dont even nedd to talk about.You cant even upgrade the 360 HD unless u pay for an overpriced 120 piece of crap HD on th PS3 u can upgrade your HD limitleesly. The 360 or the Wii doesnt even have an HD movie playback drive the PS3 does. The PS3 is built stronger than both the Wii and 360 it can handle more heat and cold and still not break down. Also the PS3 firmware constantly upgrades the system and by far has the most multimedia compatibilities compared to the Wii and 360. The RSX GPU can handle DirectX 10 level details and graphics the 360 GPU can't. The PS3 is truly the only system worthy of being called next gen and is the most future proof console that ever existed.

as we all know both versions are quite comparable on the graphics end, minus some slight color/saturation variations and anti-aliasing.

what concerns me is the PERFORMANCE issue between the two games.

in a cut scene, in game cutscene or not, you don't have to worry about things like AI, player controlled, input, etc.

but in the actual gameplay, issues like texture pop in, framerate issues, and load times are important (Mass Effect, anyone? great game, but i've had moments where it would, quite literally, load a new portion of the map nearly every minute).

graphics aren't the issue here. but it's quite unanimous across the board that the PS3 version outperforms the 360 version in terms of load times, framerate, and texture pop in, thanks to that HDD install.

what i find funny, is that last year, whenever a PS3 version of a game would suffer framerate issues, texture pop in, and less anti-aliasing, etc, Playstation 3 fans wouldn't hear the end of it, even if they were minor issues compared to the 360 version. now it seems all those sites with a heavy 360 bias (ie, Kotaku), are trying to run damage control, because the biggest game released this generation by far performs better on the PS3 instead of the "it's a given it'll perform better" on the 360? please.

it's clear Rockstar took the time to learn the Cell and RSX. this makes me happy, and gives me hope that PS3 owners won't have to suffer through piss poor 360 ports like we had to last year.

GTAIV will be great no matter what system you play it on, but i think it's only fair to note the performance differences between the two versions, since that's all EVERY gaming website did last year to the PS3 to EVERY SINGLE multi-platform title released on both consoles. they'd nitpick even the slightest hitch in framerate, or the slightest difference in color (look at the Assassin's Creed, COD4 debacles for proof of how insanely nitpicky websites were about multi-plats last year).

I am pretty positive that the PS3's resolution is locked at 620p. I am also quite sure that they made up for it with better AA, lighting and post processing.

I have played both versions......the looks almost the same with the ps3 with a slight edge...and controller wise i still like the ps3...but live had a lot more people on so far but psn had a nice amount of people to it....I dont like the fight system ...and the driving has gotten very realistic

i got mine and been playing it the last 2 hours. on a PS3. Overall, nice graphics, no glitches that jarring enough to affect gameplay, great lighting, great story, voice acting (except for the two girls Niko picked at the subway station). Graphic is not GT5P kinda great but we're talking apple and oranges. the cars drive like s**t (Burnout Paradise is much better) but enough to get you around. The L3 button on PS3 pad, gets in the way at times but once you get the hang of it, it's not as troublesome. I much prefer this over San Andreas. The TV shows are hillarious.

Well they are both identical. Yeah, theres the odd colour, brightness differences, but you can alter the settings on the game and your TV and get them to look the same.
Tearing issues with the 360 version - NO.
Agree or disagree as much as you like, I have both versions and they are the same.

My neighbour bought the 360 and we've been doing a "scientific" comparison. his indeed looks more cartooney- while the PS3 is sharper with less anti-aliasing the 360 version looks smoother to the point that it loses and lacks sharper edge. The PS3 looks grittier but in some cases like the outline of a car, it appears more jagged. Personally I find the 360 looks too smooth and clean and the word "clinical" comes to mind. He argues that he can live with that and I agree.

There can be arguments forever on every damn multi platform release and it's getting tiring. The worst thing is it will be close for a long time so this is always going to happen. And then the next consoles will come out and it will start again. Does anyone when actually playing this game start thinking to themselves.. hah.. I feel sorry for the xbox/PS owners that are missing ot on this slightly smoother line/better lit road... I hope not.

Lets all compare against the Wii instead. Then at least we may all agree for once and live happily together.

Most every journo who got an advance copy got it for 360. The practical reality is that those same journos are going to have to review the exclusive 360 DLC when it comes out. So in that context, its pretty freaking awesome that GamesRadar had any advance PS3 footage at all - now that the game is officially out, more detailed comparisons are certainly forthcoming.

the ps3 is far the best gaming machine ever, i mean rite i had a 360 and for no reason it died on me.I kept it as good as possible i dust it errytime i turn it off n keep it in a cool area but for some reason it still died on me. nah im a proud ps3 owner and sony has not let me down as yet i mean wow dis is a nice piece of techonology they came up with, which 2 mean i think blow away the 360.... gta series on ps3 will and will always be better then the 360 because of the technology if it wasmt for the xbox360 the gta would have been a bigger and better game with much more quality n now how it came on the 360 means alot of limitations set in the gta game one reason is disk space.

the graphics were never an issue to me, it was the PERFORMANCE of the game.

from what we've heard, the performance on the PS3 is better, but everyone is trying to downplay it, when last year, if a PS3 game performed less than a 360 game (which was quite often, and also equally miniscule), the PS3 would be absolutely REAMED, torn to shreds, points demerited from the final score. i just hate the hypocrisy. even when they were GOOD PORTS (ie, Fight Night Round 3, Call of Duty 4, etc), the score was always docked a point or so, just cuz, it seemed. again, i hate hypocrisy.

in either case, it was never the graphics that were called into question, but the PS3 has some technical perks that shouldn't just be dismissed when convenient. that courtesy wasn't granted when the shoe was on the other foot.
