GameSpot: White Knight Chronicles Review

On the surface, White Knight Chronicles does a lot of things right. The world and creatures look really good, you can battle a variety of colossal creatures during the single-player campaign or online with some friends, and turn into a giant knight whenever you desire. But there are just too many problems weighing the overall experience down.

Shallow combat and a predictable story make going through the main quest a slog, and the online portion is crippled by the same problems as well as dull objectives that lack variety. The beauty of White Knight Chronicles cannot hide the flaws of this forgettable and often tedious adventure.

Not really...JRPGs haven't gotten amazing scores in along time. But doesn't mean it's not a good game. Did they complain about the story in WKC? Cos Demon's souls doesn't even have 1, and no one complained...WKC is the best JRPG this gen, by far. And i didn't even understand it because it was in Japanese.

Demon's Souls isn't like your traditional JRPG. I think that's why it got amazing scores; it tried something new.

Persona 4, Devil Survivor, Valkyria Chronicles (not sure if you count this as a JRPG), Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story, The World Ends With You and others have gotten great reviews.

Ooh that's a big blow to level 5. WKC seems to be getting mixed reviews so far. This is the lowest score i think. Anyway, judging from Gamespots review history, i'd say most of the people there are more of FPS fans and prefer westernized gaming.

I am very disappointed with the score both as a Level 5 fan and an RPG enthusiast.

Wonder how they would have done with Dark Cloud 3 instead.

Don't get me wrong am not expecting 9s and 10s I new this game wasn't going to be a massive hit from the start. But 6's that's a little worrying.

If IGN give it a 7+ and a positive review I guess I will pick it up. As I would like to play it with my friend's but not if the game ain't at least decent to being with.

I think I'll skip this. It never really clicked with me but if WKC 2 comes out and gets better reviews, I'll probably go back and buy this at a reduced price.

I'm also thinking of maybe skipping FFXIII too. I think if I want an rpg, I think I'll just buy FFVIII on the ps store. But I still need to finish my whole backlog of games so whatever.

But some people are obviously judging by the thread and a few others , and as expected , more rejoicing about an "exclusive's so called demise" or "bummed" about it , than actual potential customers . Look at how a game that isnt even relevant like Mag or Heavy rain is so quickly brought up as fuel for their war .

Most fans wouldnt be swayed by that review and have already judged if the game is worth it or not to them .

Because they are? I'm a big JRPG fan, but I have to admit at lot of JRPGs' plot have been done to death.

Lost Odyssey - main character has amnesia. Haven't seen that before /s.

Cross Edge - Waking up in an unknown world. Has been done since Ys II.

WKC - Rescue the princess story. Sound familiar?

I've been playing JRPGs for years, but there comes a time where I'm just sick of seeing the same ole thing. I'm not saying those games are bad (I enjoyed LO), but give me something fresh and deliver it in an interesting way.

That's why I loved Persona 4 and Folklore (not sure if you'll call it a JRPG). How many times have we've seen a murder mystery story in a JRPG? Hell, I like the SMT series because the stories are fresh, mature and interesting.

According to GameSpot, WKC's story is incredibly cliche and told in an uninteresting way. I normally agree with their JRPG reviews.

GameSpot recent JRPG reviews that aren't FF:

Devil Survivor - 9.0 (GS loved the story and way it was told; so did I)

Persona 4 - 9.0 (liked the story)

Valkyria Chronicles - 8.5 (liked its uniqueness)

Demon's Souls - 9.0 (liked its uniqueness; they even gave it GOTY)

The World Ends With You - 9.0 (liked the story)

Knights in the Nightmare - 8.0 (liked the story)

Persona 3 - 8.5 (liked the story)

The mileage may vary a lot for these JRPGs. I've liked RPGs that scored low but didn't like rpgs that scored high. One person might hate the story but another person might like the story. If this was on xbox 360 it would have gotten a 9, but PS3 games have a higher standard.

When you set your mind like that you can make "witty" one line summary for every game's plot ... and add a little "been there done that" .

That's far too easy ... yet mostly done with only a few genre of games .

There are even charts like that lying down for every bioware stuff , and they are true , as are all of them . Should we start then calling it generic just because ? no that would be silly .

What ultimately matters is how you tell the tales , with most things "already been there done that" .

As for your list , well arent most of them popular/high profiled franchises ? When shin megami tensei was really obscure and not yet a big us seller , alot of the press didnt care aside from a few fans of the genre .
Not to mention that i did mention a few bright spots , but nevermind .

If anyone wants to play the best JRPG this gen, Lost Odyssey is it. Mistwalker picked up where Square Enix left off.

If I've learnt one thing during my many years playing JRPG's, is that they are VERY personal experiences. I have loved many JRPG's that critics have slammed. I personally hold Lost Odyssey up as amongst my favourite JRPG's ever, not many will feel the same, but that is the beauty and bane with the genre, they are divisive.

WKC doesn't come out until the 25th of Feb in PAL regions, but once I have finished FFXIII, I'm definitely going to pick this up and give it a try for myself, I suggest any JRPG lovers should do the same. :)

The reviewer was looking for reasons to hate. Most of his reasons were basically "the game takes too long" . Like to get the best armour you gotta get lets of money to level your town or get to max level? What's wrong with that? I wouldn't expect anything less yet he docks the review for it. I think they got a guy who obviously doesn't like JRPGS to do this review.

Demon's Souls is way better than WKC. When Demon's Souls came out, I had been addicted to WKC but then as soon as I put Demon's Souls in my console it consumed my life and I haven't played WKC since. It's been approximately a year now since I played WKC because of that darned Demon's Souls taking over my life. But I still really liked WKC. I found the combat and the customization & combo setup to be really fun, and the online quests were fun for a while. This game is probably my favorite traditionally styled JRPG this generation, I'd recommend it for anybody that still likes this kind of game. This and Tales of Vesperia, and Lost Odyssey are right up there for me.

Don't let reviews deter you from this game. Most JRPG's have gotten mediocre reviews this generation. If you still like the genre, you'll like this game.

Just go to youtube and check out all the gameplay vids and "boss" fights. I would have to agree with this review. Why is Demon's Souls being brought up? Demon's Souls looks spectacular at first glance.

I'm not a big fan of MMO like gameplay. Also, just because this is a PS3 exclusive doesnt mean it's good. I would say FF12 is actually better than this in terms of gameplay. Looks like i'll get Star Oceans 4 or Tales of Vesperia a week or two from now for my JRPG needs.

But I wasn't too appealed with the premises of WKC, especially when Dark Cloud was under Level 5's belt. I mean a kid that turns into a knight... eh, it sounded OK. Level 5 has done so much better-- the Dark Cloud series (#2 at least) was about time travel, a story about a kid mysteriously writing to his mother who was revealed to be from the future. Anyways, I know WKC is a new direction, but it's not Level 5's best.

The story is engaging, its about fighting for freedom, less of that lovey dovey boy and gerl thingy u find in 8.. 7 too? i donno.. Cool characters esp Balthier.. Alot of side quests and bosses, although summons are useless in ff12.. those of u that have not played ff12, nows a good time.. A whole lot of things to do! I spent 120 hrs on that game..
The optional boss battles and the rewards for killing them are the best!

I've been very curious about this title for some time; but, I was actually put-off from this game's trailer currently on PSN. Grafix looked PS2ish... if not PS1ish and the "plot" presented looked very very cookie cutter and leaning toward an age group I no longer belong to.

However... this review of 6/10, I was not expecting. That's pretty harsh, imHo. And to all the people crying about 6/10 being a decent score and too many people expect 8/10+ ... Well, grade-wise... Now now, in this case I think the 360 fanboys deserve a little trash talk, PS3 fanboys on this site made a big stink every time a JRPG came out on the 360 and received lower then expected reviews, and everytime someone would make a comment about how great WKC was going to be... so yeah they must be laughing their asses off now. Karma is a really interesting thing. We should all learn something here, but I doubt that will happen.

But personally, I will still be buying this game, it looks interesting to me, and I love my JRPGs, even the 360 ones that got those lower then desired review scores. Plus if I know if nobody buys this game, then we have that much less of a chance in seeing any more JRPGs in the future.

Forza 3 was rated over 90 on Metacritic and also had great sales, so it would be considered AAA. And you do realize that the PS3 really only had like Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 that had the reviews and sales to be considered AAA.

This is why I hate review sites it controls a persons sway of what game they are going to get personally me I like appearances not just what a person has to say for the game. For instance I saw Castlevania: Curse of Darkness thought it looked like a pretty cool game, so I got it played it, loved it. Now I got Gamespots review and saw it got a 6.7 / 10 and that just made me think this was a good game and a lot of my friends say its the best 3D Castlevania game out right now so I just said it was an underrated title.

JRPGs have been getting a lot bad press lately, especially if they have an old school feel to them. Sometimes, reviewers look for them to be so ground-breaking and unique that when they turn out to be just more of the same, they get docked big time for it...all the while, the game could still be good on its on merits.

I'm not sure how good/average WKC is, but I'm going to play it myself and see if its just a good quality title, and not the next evolution of JRPGs.

the press has always been harsher on jrpg as whole , with the exceptions of the one blockbuster everyone seems to know , and a few bright spots in collective conscience .

I again remember various morons reviewing Xenogears as quite an average even bad game , only to find out later than they didnt even really play the game , at least not beyond , and well didnt like jrpgs anyway .

And that's one example among many .

Most reviews are somehow even look as written in some defaut sheet with a pre-existing template .
As if , say , there were "Tales of" games templates , wich would almost always call their generic anime stuff with a predictable plot (nevermind the various and unexpected twists in many of them , but to notice you'd have to actually play it )

And most people dont even realise it and/nor care . With the same negative mind most games plots and shortcomings could be summarized in a few snappy lines , like God of war or halo or really anything .

The only difference as of late , is now that , as an added bonus , we get condescending articles from people supposedly caring about jrpgs , and out to save them .. and/or others going about "are jrpg on the decline ?" sensasionalist crap .

It's ok to not care , the genre survived pretty well with only it's fans beyond the unificating power of a final fantasy , and will keep doing so likewise .

Us PS3-only owners are so JRPG-starved that we need to get this game. The fact that it's a PS3-exclusive doesn't really matter (Blu-Ray obviously does, but just saying), what matters is the fact that this looks like a quality JRPG. I haven't played an RPG since FFXII back in 2006. This looks like a better version of FFXII to me. And the online portion is really interesting. Already have 3 friends that want to do quest. And honestly, if an online portion of a game is so huge, no review can be justified unless the reviewer has played the online portion as part of the experience. The servers aren't up yet I don't think.

Nevertheless, this game is going to be a huge undertaking. I was never interested in this title til recently for whatever reason. But this has that old-school JRPG feel to it that I sorely miss in this era of gaming. Couple that with the fact the game looks good and fun and it's more than enough reason to justify a day one purchase for me.

When did we become so hell-bent on relying on other peoples reviews (opinions)? Honestly, I know everyone is hurting for money, but forming your own opinion on something and going after what you like, regardless of numbers, is priceless.

I don't remember anyone ever boasting about the story in WKC, people mainly want it because of the online co-op. I'm one of these people. I never expected the story to be great in it and I didn't expect 9's & 10's from review sites. This game will most likely have a solid online community and that's what most people are excited over.

I think it's gonna be loads of fun running around with 3 friends in a massive world killing beasts and then going back to their self created town and buying/trading items.

I think reviewers seem to lean toward wRPG (action oriented RPG) nowaday. WRPG is good no doubt about it, but JRPG has certain tactical, culture flavor to it and well just different. Like Lost odyssey, i haven't seen any game employing so much phylosophy in an RPG game before. If i listen to their review, i would have miss one of the best JRPG this gen. Who care if the review aren't good. If u like JRPG, but not sure about WKC, go rent it first and see if u like it.

On the flip side, u can just get the x360 if RPG is your favorite genra. It is not expensive and the newer SKUs are more reliable.

The only people who overrated it were the ps3 fanboys and that was only because it's a ps3 exclusive. WKC is hardly a flop. Just an RPG that was hyped way too much and is amazing for what it does. Heck it does a lot more than most JRPG's have this gen. And that's having a stable online system. Imo, WKC is merely the foundations for what is to come. You can even tell that in the games story.

I usually order from Amazon, however I'll be picking up Heavy Rain from Gamestop because if I choose "release date delivery" from Amazon, I get it at 5pm and I'm in bed because I work at midnight :( I'd rather pick up the game at 10am when GS opens and play all day until bed.

The Gamestops I go to in the Tampa Bay area of Florida aren't bad. They usually have everything I am looking for. Games such as Demon's Souls and Sacred 2 couldn't be found at my Best Buy and they had them. I was in there for some other game and knew I would be buying ME2 and WKC, so I went ahead and pre-ordered. I normally don't pre-order but I knew I would be back. I have two Gamestops closer to me than the Best Buy and I live in a city of 250,000 people. Wake up Best Buy! I use Amazon too but if I want a game bad enough to have it release day, I hate waiting with Amazon or paying extra to ship it faster.

JRPGs have enjoyed their dominance for a long long time now. But i guess times have changed and the western RPGs have really raised the bar this gen. Games like Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Fallout3, The witcher and Oblivion have really upped the ante in terms of game quality and though JRPG's are different, comparisons will always be made since they fall in the same basic genre. Thats why they are getting such low scores, not because of their game quality(which acc to me has been consistently good), but because of the competition from the Western Devs.

On the Japan Amazon the reviews are averaged out to a 3.5 out of 5. When they first released it the reviews were all over the place and averaged out to a 3.0. The U.S is getting the updated version that was released in Japan called White Knight Ex edition.

I`ve read a lot of reviews from me2 and decided to download it and play. It was a rather boring experience. The reviewers were wrong. I won`t go into why me2 is only a mediocre GAME, because it is if set aside personal opinions. How much do you need to pay to get a good score nowadays?
I`ll buy WKC.
Why should I trust gamespot? Trust a site that gives gtaiv 10/10?

The person that brought this news to this site should`ve been slapped in his face.
There are so much loyalty to each console it`s horrible. I wish ms could`ve been erased from the world of video-games.
That way we could have been playing games like the old days, instead of buying one, play halfways, brag about how good reviews it got and that you own it.
Blind people trust gamespot.
It`s a dangerous evolvement this generation, and if someone is to be blamed, it`s ms. They tried to stall Sony from the market and made people think it`s a war: DEFEND OUR PROOUD AND NOBLE US PRODUCT.

I hate that all these RPGs prevent you from controlling your party. It's dumb that they spend all this time trying to program the computer to be good support characters when they could let the player control them. At least there should be an option to turn it on or off.

First off let me just give a huge "GO TO HELL" to all the 360 Fan girls. Flop this... flop that. It's rather annoying. Not to mention the fact that they are actually fun games. Now I am a PC gamer at heart. But I do own a PS3. I have noticed that the 360 girls usually have a one track mentality. Now before you try and blast me (chances are I won't read it to begin with) just keep reading. The only INTERESTING title you girls have is Fable. That is it. Halo is so damn washed up and after stating the fact that Halo is washed up they always result to "BUT WE HAVE GEAR OF WAR!" And that's just even worse. Old stuff ladies. Now as far as your lineup. You can't honestly be contempt can you? I do not try to take sides but I just hate the 360 community. All of the 360 titles are going to absolutely get CRUSHED by GoW3 alone. In every aspect. But at least you girls have "GEARS OF WAR!!11!11!" Right?

You can't let a review get in your way. I got MW2 based off the reviews which were great and I was so disappointed. A great example of me getting a game with a horrid review was Monster Hunter for the PS2. I had just got my latest issue of Game Informer to be so disappointed. They gave it something ridiculous like a 5.75 I think. I got the game anyways and to this very day it is still my favorite game of all time. Do I think WKC holds the same future? Not entirely... but the online town system is what sold me. Now if my birthday wasn't tomorrow I would go pick it up right now.

...I have plenty of hours in my LVL 35 character and I've enjoyed every single moment. Perhaps because it hails from an era where the RPG formula was more direct, simple, not some amalgam of genres to appease those who are often scare of the three letters R-P-G! I don't know, I really can't agree with anything GameSpot has said thus far and I'm almost at the end of the game. While not worth a 10, I'd give it an 8.0 considering I've been enjoying everything about it, and my wife stole it because she wanted to play too!

A lot RPGs coming this year but so far two of then are now oficially considered average to crap :

Final Fantasy XVII and now WKC.

I own both PS3 and a very good PC andI got to oportunity to play Mass Effect 2 that I doubt it will not win in 2010 as the best RPG of the year.

The good side about these two JRPGs (WKC and FF13) considered bad games is that I can forget about then and focus on other "good "games that are coming this year and it is not just a few.

you cant really compare them. i havent played MW2 (and not planing to) but a shooter doesnt has to have the best story and "combat" but an RPG has too because thats what it only have to do. Though i think WKC deserves a better score I cant really blame them for the 6/10.. the game is just not too many people to love.

The thing most of you get wrong is that all games are not for everyone, I've played many 6/10 games and had the best gaming exp of my life so I dont really care!! Its an awesome game and i'm gon buy it!

Took too long in coming. Two words... Demons Souls.

I was really looking forward to WKC when I first saw the original trailer almost 3 years ago. This generation has moved on now and it's a shame. I really can't say I'm surprised tho. As the time went on, my interest in the game has wained. Then Demons Souls came out and WKC although still in my wishlist has become pretty much an afterthought sadly.

Someone is mad that they couldn't get the White Knight, I die about 5 times or more, finally killed that boss and got the White Knights powers.

I like how it is, it isn't turn base and it is something new to try for a RPG and the AI doesn't seem dumb like in some of the games out now, plus I love how good you can custom make a character, they did a good job.

I give it a 8, characters get 7(They don't look really but look good) and your areas I give that a 10, because the stages just look awesome.

Well lets see, you got a circle that fills up an has the name of the attack you are about to do in the center of it, it shows a sign if the attack isn't a attack that can be done at the time.

Can't think of any games that did that, oh yeah an had 3 bars with about 8 or 10 slots for your skills to be put in.
