Why Ryse Is The Most Frustrating Game Of E3

Ryse plays itself even if the player isn't pressing any buttons.

I’m on the battlefield. I’m stomping through the corpses of my comrades swinging my sword at anything that moves. I begin a combo, I slash twice and then whooom slow motion is initiated, shit is about to get ‘cinematic’. A button prompt hovers elusively above the sword I’m about to drive into the throat of my enemy… argh I’m too slow! The prompt flickers, disappears.

I missed it. Damn.

But then somehow, for some reason, I still complete the cinematic ‘kill’.

What?

Maybe it’s a bug I think, but no. Next time I deliberately press the wrong button. The kill goes ahead, no consequences. Then I try hitting no buttons whatsoever. The kill goes ahead. I put the controller on the table in front of me, the kill goes ahead.

What is going on here?

I ask one of the Crytek people hovering at the booth – is this a bug? Why am I completing kills when I hit the wrong button prompt? Or, worse, no button at all. Turns out it was a deliberate design choice.

“We don’t want the player to feel frustrated,” I am told.

Interesting....I heard the QTE's could be turned off completely or ignored.

Kalowest4011d ago

The fact you can't fail QTE is the biggest problem to me. I like the graphics and gameplay, but hate the fact it's holding your hand to much.
Till the game goes gold, Crytek can still fix/ fine tune the QTEs.

kneon4011d ago

It sounds like they designed this for complete noobs who have never held a controller before.

What is the point of a QTE that you can't fail, that's just retarded.

Testfire4011d ago

I'll sum up in 1 word why this design decision was made...KINECT! This is still a kinect game at heart so of course they want people to feel like they are good at a game or that kinect is accurate. Day one release game and already kinect is having a negative effect on the quality of games. Shame on you Crytek and shame on you MS.

n4g_someone4010d ago

So more like a movie, than a video game.

Nodoze4008d ago

Clearly this game is designed for the NFL crowd that typically do not play games. They can watch tv then watch err play ryse. Sounds like fun...in some alternate gaming universe.

QuickTime events are stupid in ALL games. We need a new mechanic.

mistecheese4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

thats messed up, man! After playing the combat section of a game for so long, one of the joys is just seeing what happens when you die...

Arkham Asylum: Cool Villain Cut-scenes

Deadspace: Gruesome death sequences

Tomb Raider: Freaking torture porn bro, like WTF

You get the point, though! This game is just holding your hand the entire time! No challenge whatsoever!

"My name is Quickius Timeus Eventius, leader of the great Xbox 360 legion, and son to the bastardized Xbox One, and I will have my revenge in this console or the next!"

fermcr4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

So let me see if a i get this ...

A game full of QTE's like Heavy Rain (and Beyond: Two Souls), is praised and considered to be a good game.

A game full of QTE's like Ryse, get's criticized and people bash the game, just because it's on the X1.

Everything related to Xbox One (good or bad) is getting criticized and bashed... this is starting to get out of hand.

@The_Klank
"Both those games you mentioned have consequences if you fail a QTE.There's a right way to do QTEs and a wrong way, guess which one this is? "

Have you played Ryse ? How do you know if you fail it doesn't have consequences ?
Seriously, that's a pretty lame excuse.

The_Klank4011d ago

Both those games you mentioned have consequences if you fail a QTE.

There's a right way to do QTEs and a wrong way, guess which one this is?

4011d ago
Skips4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

Failing a QTE can actually change the storyline for Heavy Rain... -________-

Ryse??? LOL!

Does a QTE have to happen after EVERY SINGLE KILL??? It's presence is completely unnecessary. It adds NOTHING to the story and it feels like a half baked attempt at trying to make EVERY SINGLE kill feel "epic".

Hell even God Of War III, (a game Xbox fanboys bash for being so QTE heavy) has less QTE in it than that ENTIRE demo. -_-

esemce4011d ago

I'm guessing 2 souls is going to have a great involving story with branching paths giving reply value, Whilst Ryse will be a very nice looking scripted interactive tech demo that involves the stabbing of a lot of people in the face.

Baka-akaB4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

I could agree with that sentiment , except when Asura's wrath , so far with an even better gameplay than Ryse , was shown , both sides were crapping onto him . And now suddenly something like Ryse is marvelous ?

At least quantic dream stuff was known as not being even remotely action games

Bobbo444011d ago Show
AngelicIceDiamond4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

@Ferm And yet Ready at Downs new game The Order 1886 was a simple teaser and fanboys thought it was the best thing ever.

Well damn if they can get excited over that then its ok for me to get excited over Black Tusks little teaser then...

Edit: Btw this game will have Co op or MP of sorts so I hope this games good.

How Ryse looks imo http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Yeah, I'm actually pretty pumped for this game. I guess that makes me a bad person on here to like a game.

fermcr4010d ago (Edited 4010d ago )

@Bobbo44

You represent the worst of Sony fanboys and why everybody in the gaming world think that Sony fanboys are the worst.

Someone gives a opinion... and gets bashed. GROW UP LITTLE BOY.

Soc54010d ago

Uh, it says it in the article, which this is based on

jetlian4010d ago (Edited 4010d ago )

the whole game isn't qte and they took a kingdoms of amalur approach which also you couldnt fail qte. You could get up to 100 percent bonus xp.

There is no right or wrong way to do them but I do think it shouldn't be possitive. At the same time if the enemy is technically dead it shouldnt matter

Nodoze4008d ago

die_fiend4011d ago

In fairness to Crytek, they tried a few games where you had proper control input and they were the more soulless games ever conceived. Maybe QTE is the way forward for them. Just don't expect me to purchase from you after Crysis 3. I think 8/10 for the game is being very generous

CaptainFaisal4011d ago

whats QTE? i feel like an idiot ! but seriously... thanks

Testfire4011d ago

Quick Time Event. It's when you're playing a game and the game prompts an on screen button command to do something. As in the demo of Ryse there is a QTE to finish off an enemy.

Mounce4010d ago

PRESS A TO MARRRRIIOOO
PRESS X TO CHERYL
PRESS X TO JAAAAAYSONNNN!

And now the new addition to the team....

PRESS X TO [DO-EVERYTHING-RELATING-TO-KIL LING] - Press X to stab, Press X to throw, Press X to dodge and stab, Press X repeatedly to stab repeatedly! PRESS X TO WIN - THE GAME!

Ryse: An Epic QTE from what I have seen.

Moonman4011d ago

I hope that didn't sound positive. I meant that as a bad thing...lol.

Godmars2904011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

Sounds like its a Kinect game that doesn't use Kinect.

How is Crytek if not MS not humiliated by showing this off?

ginsunuva4011d ago

It was originally a kinect game. That's why it's all QTEs now

esemce4011d ago

It helps to sell/ advertise the Cryengine, I don't think they care about story or actual gameplay.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34011d ago

Lol. Let's see if they complain about Beyond two souls.

SeraphimBlade4011d ago

Beyond uses QTEs to tell a better story and engage the player. Ryse uses them to look pretty.

I suppose you could say they're both interactive movies, but Beyond looks like a WAY better movie.

Godmars2904011d ago

By the sound of thing where Beyond or other games with QTE in them have consequences, you either die or have to repeat the QTE until you get it right, in Ryse its just some worthless mechanic. a prompt meant to make you feel like you're playing the game or playing through a scene.

Crytek is supposedly talking about removing the prompts, but since they don't work in the first place, what's the point?

A2X_4011d ago

It's not about the QTEs, it's about how they're implemented into the game.

No one will complain about God of War's QTEs for example. They come at the right moment and with epic proportions. As for Heavy rain/Beyond, the whole games are based on contextual actions/Cinematics. They have so many different mechanics it would be impossible not to have QTEs. Plus, they're perfectly implemented.

Now, for Ryse, They're repetitive & look like we can do without. That's all.

sway_z4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

I'm sure the developer was interviewed at E3 and said the button prompts were contextual not QTE?

QTE or not, I didn't mind it on Heavy Rain or the God of War series, and I won't mind it on Beyond either.

I am glad they did away with the forced Kinect controls and went with controller/voice play.

Ryse looks downright impressive though!!

Ryse was awesome, i have no idea why it wasnt recieved well and why we havnt seen another, Rome conquered so much, you could take the action anywhere, and it looked great when xbox one came out, now would be even better.

Ryse: Son of Rome Deserves a Second Shot

Ryse: Son of Rome was an Xbox One launch title that has been left to collect dust, but Crytek should set aside Crysis and give Ryse another shot.

It was a great game, it had issues but it can only go up from here.

crazyCoconuts666d ago

It was just ok. Looked really good for an Xbox game though

Snookies12666d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows90666d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac666d ago (Edited 666d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty666d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts666d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage89666d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.
I remember it being nearly the only graphically decent game on the Xbone for like the first two years after launch, and graphics were that games strength

CrimsonWing69666d ago

I really enjoyed it. Bought it at launch even.

ManMarmalade666d ago (Edited 666d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer667d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer7804666d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty1889666d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer666d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv72666d ago (Edited 666d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad666d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv72666d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play666d ago

Game was good enough, not great.
Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows90666d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.

MadLad666d ago

It was a good game.
Only time I saw quick time events actually make me feel engaged.

This is not what I would call value for money spent. They give you quests in liveservice games to get you "re-engaged" with the monetization schemes or to get you hooked or so you at least spend some extra on skins and loot boxes. Then they dole out paltry points after you have already paid extra for whichever liveservice within a liveservice that you are already paying for. My worry is people can't actually be that stupid to fall for this, can they?

littletad672d ago

Absolutely nothing in this comment makes sense. At all.

anast671d ago (Edited 671d ago )

How does it not make sense? O thy god of reason, shine some evidence upon us. Ryse of Rome, ESO,and AC: Origins are all live service games, between them you can get 275 points. Liveservice games are made to keep people spending. Therefore, Gamepass is a live service and the points are for playing live service games.

It is not my problem that this does not make sense to you, it is absolutely your problem. I mean it is all your problem.

Julion0715671d ago (Edited 671d ago )

Hate Xbox but comments in every Xbox article 😂 without making sense smh

anast671d ago

Bring the evidence and then your emoji might make sense.
