i asked myself the same question, and i really have no idea. FF has always been a seller, i also imaged ff7 remake would be in the 10s of millions of copies sold. that was not the case.
ff16 did well yes but again, not as much as i thought it would tbf.
i think its Square as a whole. not just ff.

i think whats changed, is that devs jump on a thing that worked for one or two games and do the same, regardless if it works for their games or not.
