Sales Charts: PS3 Outselling Xbox360 Weekly

The latest from VG charts for the week ending August 5th 2007 shows the PS3 outselling the Xbox360 in just about every region with the exception of australia. When cycling back through the previous weeks before that you will notice the charts reflect a trend. A change in sales performance for Sony's Playstation 3 who's direct competitor is Microsoft's Xbox360. The Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii dominate the charts as well outselling all competition but most do not consider them direct competitors the Playstation 3 and Xbox360 due to price point, target consumers and type of gaming experience.

last i checked, the 360 was outselling often the ps3 in every region except japan, and to the fact the only times the ps3 sold big was at launch...then it dropped by something like 80% in sales a week or 2 after launch, and doesn't it seem fitting that the only time ps3 has outsold the 360, in america and europe is american had a price cleanrance (cough) and europes own stores lowered the price without sonys permission.

he is right you know, since the release in march the PS3 sold more than the X-Box360 in theEU every single week till today, so that other info you had seems kinda flawed.

The amount sold more was not the issue, cause clearly the much higher US X-Box360 sales more than made up for the PS3 numbers in Europe, until the PS3 managed to go ahead the X-Box360 in the week ending 08th July 2007.

But I really doubt the price drop of the XBox 360 will have anywhere near as significant of an impact as the PS3 price drop. It's really only a big deal when the most expensive becomes cheaper, not the one that is already cheap.

And the reason why is because the PS3 is finally at the price that it should have been at from the beginning. The thing was over priced until now. It'll be interesting to see if Sony will allow it to continue or if they will try to return to making a fortune on this things.

What will really tell the story is when the 60 gig supply is depleted, (which I don't think is going to happen because Sony is probably producing more as we speak. Which really does make this a PRICE CUT.) to see how the 80 gig 599.00 price point will be accepted.

But I'm not too over confident about this. I know XBOX 360 sales are gonna go up once it drops it's price. depending on how monthly sales go, I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 cuts price again or does some special offers during the fall.

I do feel pretty confident that Sony will be willing to do whatever it takes to hang in there with 360 sales. I think their early launch and arrogant woes are behind them, as they saw a few months of 80k sales. That changed things real fast for them.

Concerning this article, WHAT the HELL is going on w/ all these VG articles? When did it become a reliable source. Once, the NPD numbers come in, then we all should have something to talk about.

Moreover, how does one month of rising sales equal a continuing trend for the future. Keep in mind that the 360 just dropped its price and though its not much of a price drop ($50?), it is highly likely that that Xbox will also experience some modest sales growth. And I'm not going to even mention September.

VG charts is close enough to say which system is outselling who, but they won't get within the 5,000 unit accuracy. The cost gap between the 360 and PS3 is going to narrow eventually and the 360 core is phasing out. This is only the beginning for the PS3's success.

Vgcharts is a mixed bag.

For US and Japan it is just using the direct NPD and Media Create and other known and reliable source for sales numbers.

The real problem with vgcharts is the third/other category where there are no easily obtainable numbers and they just make up whatever numbers they think each console should be at.

In all likelyhood the Wii has already passed the 360 worldwide this month, but the 360 Other category is still inflated from the massive stuffing of the channel back in November/December where vgcharts added in those millions of 360 gathering dust on store shelves into the total 'sales'.

Considering that VGchartz was less than 1% off the official sold2customer numbers that Sony released with their financial report i wouldn't be so fast in throwing mud at them. Even NPD only manages a 10% accuracy as stated by NPD themself. So at least the PS3 numbers seem to be rather accurate. And if they use the same sources for all 3 consoles i fail to see why the other two should be completely off the target.

Explain to me what PS 3 games have the potential to match the sales of Halo, or even Madden. Forget what you think about quality, I'm just talking about game sells. Halo is more than enough to broadaon 360's audience. How many consoles did Halo 2 sell? And that was during the same time GTA released EXCULSIVELY for the PS2.

Without GTA4 I doubt 360 will make the install base gap even wider. Madden and Halo 3 isn't enough. PS3 has the games to match the 360 and then PS3 also has blu-ray.

The PS3 outsold the 360 for but one month and suddenly night is falling on the console? It took a $100 price cut for the PS3 to get out of its rut. A price drop for the 360 is only going to help. You know how people have been saying the 360 has sold so many more units than the PS3? Well, there is a down side to that...the initial interest (after almost 2 years) is gone. Most people that wanted it, have it.

I doubt a price drop will have the same effect as the PS3's price drop.
Most people have been holding back on getting a PS3 due to (as you always say) it's price and game library. The price drop solved one of those, and E3 showed the second is about to be a thing of the past too.

The 360 is already cheaper and has more games. Who will be convinced to buy it when the price drops?

PS - No, I don't think Halo 3 will affect sales much at all. Everyone who likes Halo already has Halo 2 and a 360.

your point. Are you saying that the 360 will no longer sell consoles due to their time in the market? If so, then consider the PS2. Also, you seem to imply that the consle market audience has shrunk to less than 20 million. Again, if you look at console history, I think you will find that the majority of a systems start to really sell during a new price cut or Holidays. Price always matters and there are still millions of consumers still sitting on the fence...perhaps waiting for the 360 to drop to $350 (the original Xbox's launch price).

PS 3 had such a price drop and their sales increased. Now, I've already admitted that 360's $50 price drop may not totally gurantee the same level of sales that the Ps had. Nevertheless, it is highly likely that 360 will experience a modest growth simply because allconsoles that drop price typically increase in sale.

About Halo 3... how many consoles did Gears sell? How many units were Pre-ordered prior to its release? If there's any indicator that a particular will sell consoles its the number of pre-orders that games has. halo has 5 million, and I think one can safely say that it will sell a sh!t load of consoles

The PS3 sales have been dropping, they dropped another 11% this week from last week. That same trend has been going for a month now. I beleive the PS3 was below 40K this week (Already) So something is going on.

Also, Sony claimed that they were loosing money when the PS3 was 599.00 imagine how much they are loosing now (Per console) If they have sold 100,000 units since the price drop, then they have already lost 10 mil. plus whatever they were loosing before. (Although that's a drop in the bucket for sony) and some people are saying they should drop the PS3 price to 400 or 450. I doubt it.

that the PS 3 had yet another LAUNCH in Europe during March. Typically, when a console launches it experiences a short spike in sells. That would explain how the PS 3 shipped 3 million consoles during 2007. Xbox, on the other hand, was over a year old and failed to release any stellar software during the PS 3's launch. So 11.6 million units sold is quite reasonalbe considering the launch of the PS 3 in Europe and the lack of triple A titles released during the 2007.

Mark my words, though, this price drop and Halo 3 will skyrocket 360 sells for September. I'm guesinng a modest sales increase for August, but have no doubt that September will be the month for 360.

Wow, it finally got games to come to the console. Man that was something that would have been expected months prior to E3. Sony fanboys finally get a game to play on their game console. Well thats what a game console is about GAMES, and the difference between microsoft and sony is the fact that Microsoft seen the logic in makeing GAMES. Because they would then have to supply composite, component and HDMI cables, and only one set would ever get used. Not only is it wasteful, it would be expensive. The machine already cost to much, would you like them to waste more money? Same goes for the headset. Added cost. though not w/ your comment that heavenly sword, Lair, and Warhawk (all of which are good games by the way) will sell consoles, but that it will be able to compete with the star power of Halo 3. Lets face it, Halo 3 is an established TRILOGY that is known by hardcore and casual gamers alike. The three PS 3 games you just mentioned are all new IPs and have to be proven (Lair, for example, has recieved a 6.5 from EGM and its only hope lies with IGN or Gameinformer giving good scores). For this reason alone, Halo will be way more effective at selling consoles than the three games you just mentioned.

Of course Halo3 is going to sell consoles, its a given, but I dont think as many as people are expecting. As mentioned by other, most Halo fans have a 360. You can deny that. Out of 5 M preorders how many of those have a 360 do you think. Probably 4.8M. MOST.

Then theres the fact Halo isnt all that anymore. Don't get me wrong, it will be a great, solid shooter, but after 2 games already it doesn't have that WOW factor anymore. It really just looks like more of the same. I'm still gonna get, and even go to the midnight thing, cos its fun but once its out and people are saying, "yeah its good, nothing brilliant," it not like this game is going to move alot more consoles.

To be honest I'm way more excited about Haze and UT3 looks positively mind blowing. If you think Halo3 will sell consoles you have to take into account 10 games on PS3 before the end of the year that could sell it by themselves to. You know what I think might be the big surprise is the LBP demo. A Parent walks into a shop and sees that running and the guy goes "yeah, its a free demo with PS3". What makes you think a game will sell and move consoles? Contrary to what you wrote, pre-orders are a very good indicator to just how many copies a game may sell and move consoles. i will ask again how many pre-orders did Halo 2 have? Gears of War? Both of them sold very well and, more improtantly, MOVED CONSOLES. So how does Halo 3 having 5 MILLION pre-orders not almost gurantee that it will move consoles.

Of course, basing a game's future success on what you think ought to be is subjective, to say the least. Instead, lets focus just on FACTS, like Halo 3 achieving 5 million consoles and also that its previous releases proved to be huge system movers. On Gamestats, Halo 3 ranks numero uno. Kuest, I'm not saying the game wouldn't sell. I'm just pointing out alot of those pre orders already own a console and therefore aren't going to buy one. And how do we know if a game sells a console unless its a bundle or stores keep track of when someone buys a console which game they bought with it. I believe Halo was a huge system seller on XB1 because it was so good, and had no peers at the time. But now its more like been there done that and there are simply better shooters coming out.

Hey you still cant underestimate the fanbase so if they sell a couple million copies of Halo in the first week and a couple million Xboxes too, then I think you can safely say that game moved those consoles, and I've no doubt there will be a spike. Just dont confuse the amount of games being sold with the amount of machines being sold. After all, if a million units sell and a million Xboxes sell, that means no one that already had a xbox bought it. Thats not going to happen is it? More like 1M sell, 8 or 900K of them had the machine from launch day.

Xbox will sell more in america agreed, europe is a toss up but prolly sony based on the fact that they have been winning europe so far but halo might change that.
