PSVR 2 Outsold Original PSVR in First 6 Weeks, Sony Confirms

Sony revealed PSVR 2 outperformed the original PSVR in sales in the first six weeks, taking a strong early lead over the company’s first-gen PlayStation headset. An investor relations presentation delivered by Sony Interactive Entertainment chief Jim Ryan includes some new information detailing PSVR 2 units sales relative to the original PSVR launched in October.

I didn't see a duplicate story from this news on n4g so I posted it. If it is a duplicate let me know

Tacoboto332d ago

It's been a while since they stated this, but in that initial context I don't remember seeing the sales curve relative to PSVR1, only the 8% higher figure.

Neonridr333d ago

the only concern here is the PSVR had a steady climb, PSVR2 is showing signs of flattening.

Of course this is a crude graph, so who knows.

SullysCigar333d ago

It can't flatten, as this is a cumulative graph. This was after just six weeks, though, and we're way beyond that at this stage. Launches since release have been stronger on PSVR2, so I expect it's still doing comparatively well.

Important to note, is that the six week period for PSVR was moving towards the Christmas period, whereas the PSVR2 was moving towards summer. It's hard to compare, in all honesty, until we get a full year picture, but I'd say PSVR2 is doing very well compared to the first headset.

Neonridr333d ago

I'm sure it is, I didn't mean flatten out completely, just that the "curve" was less steep as the PSVR looked to be catching up in terms of numbers.

I'm fully on board the VR train, so as long as the games keep coming, I'll be a happy camper.

purple101333d ago

Also it a few things I noticed..

1. Ps5 was expensive compared to at the time of psvr1 ps4 and ps4pro were available on good deals and certainly a few hundred less than the RRP HR originally released at.

2, psv1 was released in a time of slightly more optimistic job outlooks. Psvr2 was released at end of pandemic when thousands lost jobs or equally people were tightening their belt. Although computer games resisted drops and defied the market as people saw them as a good value per $$/££ for enjoyment the fact psvr2 is a luxury and not a standard 'game' (it's an add-on) it's non essential and this will have factored in peoples decisions.

3. The games are only just about to be released. I'm my view, I STRONGLY think that while it has good games, the true blockbusters have not appeared yet.

Games showing the new power and quality of screens are on the horizon, no pun intended,. Speaking of which: Yes horizon and gt7 were well received, but a new shooter, a'la farpoint 2, is going to peak interest way more than those other 2 games would simply because there's more shooting fans than racing fans and many have not experienced Horizon because they have a backlog or are waiting to get a good deal/ save up for ps5.

Once the majority of PS4 owners finally upgrade... It will sell gangbusters.. double psvr1 I believe easy.

Meta and apple already doing plenty advertising for them making VR headsets seem more mainstream than a nerd sitting on a gaming chair, £3000 worth of Beast PC, oculus rift strapped on, RGB LED lighting up the entire room and a bright-yellow hand, from scoffing down multiple kilo's of cheese puffs.

This is the current view of Vr gamers among many, but that's gonna change extremely soon.

I would conclude by saying I played psvr 1 (random horror game) when a friend brought it over.... Got tired after a few games, went to lean on a table, but, to my surprise and downfall, it was a VR TABLE (in the game) and not the table in my lounge,... Needless to say, I stacked it, making a complete fool of myself.!... but THAT'S' how immensely immersive it is; You TOTALLY forget where you are, if the games even slightly good.

Have a great day all. X

Tacoboto332d ago

6 weeks after PSVR's release would've put that right at/around Black Friday, so yeah context on timing is important especially for hardware that by itself was also a lot cheaper during a heavy spending season

rlow1332d ago

@purple101
Lol, I just had to complement you on your stories. I was having a tough day and needed the laughs. Good sense of humor. Mahalo!

PS5 VR will slowly die. Sony will bang on with it until PS6, then start over again. How many AAA did we see on PS4 VR? Too many headsets at different prices adds to the woes.

MrBaskerville332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

No one is expecting a plethora of AAA vr games and those who are, are missing the point.

Agent75330d ago

No, it's you that's clueless. How long has the PS5 been out there? A few years. Give or take another 2 or 3 years and PS5 VR sales will drop off as did PS4 VR sales. Then out pops PS6 and Sony bangs the VR drum again. I don't care why PS5 VR is at the price it's at now. PS4 VR struggled at the price it was at and it's not going to change when you look at the price of PS5 VR.

S2Killinit332d ago

Hmm it had more exclusive content that xbox had.

EvertonFC332d ago

😂🤣 so true, poor Xbox

anast332d ago

It's extremely clear PSVR is the future of gaming.

EvertonFC332d ago

The sheep will come over when it's popular and cool, were the ones who'll get it to be cool.

Knushwood Butt332d ago

I got mine day 1 and use it during most, but not all, gaming sessions.
A seat, wheel, gt7, and psvr2 setup is fantastic, and my 'go to' psvr2 experience.

I bought a few other VR games at launch but haven't touched them for weeks, not because they are bad, but because gt7 is too good.

Also, am I imaging things, or does gt7 in vr look better/clearer since the June update?

The_Hooligan332d ago

I never bough PSVR 1 but I am definitely thinking about picking up PSVR 2. Only concern I have is that I wear glasses (can't do contacts unfortunately) and not sure how comfortable it would be. I went to my local best buy but they didn't have one that I could try on. I just want to make sure it would be comfortable if I were to game on it for more than 30 minutes.

Knushwood Butt332d ago

They say it's designed to accommodate glasses but I only wear reading glasses and don't wear glasses when I game so don't know.

SullysCigar332d ago

^ @The_Hooligan, the good news is there are a bunch of companies already doing lenses that snap over the ones in the headset, which they can adjust to your prescription if you like. Sometimes people just want blue light filters, which they can also accommodate. They're around $40, I think, and you can usually get a discount code from YouTubers (like Polish Paul) at the end of most of the current videos they put out.

Thinking about doing this myself, but I'd need to get my eyes checked first!

332d ago
HICK332d ago

@ the Hooligan. Just get prescription lenses to magnetize to it. They get great reviews

I'm glad PSVR2 is doing better than PSVR1 is thus far. Bring on the PSVR2 games Sony!!!

Forget the naysayers who are constantly underestimating and undervaluing PSVR 1 and PSVR2 which are still the only VR headsets on consoles!

JEECE332d ago

So the takeaway is that Bloomberg is always wrong?

Aloymetal332d ago

All those ''financial/business identities have always been in bed with you know who so of course they're gonna downplay anything from Sony.

ApocalypseShadow332d ago

Yes. That's basically it.

Sony again is beating the numbers. Bodes well when more titles start releasing on it. It's already got bangers. But I expect hum dingers real soon. Others promised VR. But Sony's the one offering high fidelity VR on consoles.

blackblades332d ago

Basically taking a page from patcher and we know not to trust him.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies2d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 17h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga3d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit2d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
