Bethesda mysteriously deletes tweet claiming Starfield physical editions won’t have discs

Starfield fans were left shocked today as the Bethesda Support account, in a now deleted tweet, claimed the physical edition wouldn't include a disc.

The tweet was in response to one fan asking if the Standard Edition of Starfield for Xbox Series X would include a disc. In that tweet, Bethesda Support said, “Hello!, All physical editions include a code for the chosen platform. There are no physical discs.”

Hopefully the backlash from fans have made them decide to put an actual disc in the case.

RpgSama339d ago

"Why Starfield not including physical disc is the right choice" articles coming.

Futureshark339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

"Starfield physical release doesn't come with a disk ... And why I'm fine with that."

"Starfield physical release not including a disk is the right choice."

Abear21339d ago

It will be interesting to see sales data on console, more likely you’ll see, “X million players downloaded” stat instead of sales numbers.
Taking away the used market helps them sell more copies. Pretty shady.

Kinda suspicious that out of no where comes the articles about why it's ok that Starfield is 30fps, no vehicles, no CD and it's always the right choice

I mean it's kinda obvious that Xbox fanboys have such low standards that they will get happy with anything Microsoft is doing at this point

Stuart5756338d ago

Never..its pretty save to say there won't be any physical copies.

aconnellan339d ago

This comment aged pretty poorly, standard edition will come with a physical disc while special edition will be digital

Abear21339d ago

Unfortunately more likely corporate greed will win out

SullysCigar339d ago

More likely they're trying to stifle negative news, just as they did with Redfall's 30fps, always online and not even Unreal Engine 5 after everyone reported it would be for YEARS.

Redfall bit them hard, despite them sweeping all that under the carpet until shortly before launch. They'll up the ante and concrete over details like this for Starfield, rather than risk a repeat scenario.

TheKingKratos339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

Wait, it requires online too ?! 🤔😮😮

neomahi338d ago

But it shouldn't have to be this way. Xbox has consistently worked and operated this way. It's "let's see what we can get away with" and when they get caught it's "we're sorry" and then they try and ice the cake with "you see, we're listening" yeah, right after you tried to sneak around our back and screw us over. But Xbots are forgiving because Xbox is struggling right now (because of a lot of stupid decisions just like this) and they don't want to see them finished off. You know how SEGA fans felt when the beloved SEGA Dreamcast was let go and Sonic the Hedgehog appeared on a Nintendo console? You had to live in that era. It was a travesty but resulted from SEGA of Japan making A LOT of bad decisions and destroying the trust they once had with their fanbase. Their fanbase left and went to PlayStation that was doing everything right. Microsoft could face this same fate, but their fanbase doesn't want to see that so they'll forgive all day long no matter how much their abused. Like a beaten Labrador that keeps coming back to irs abusive owner, so are Xbox only consumers. Those that have all three and a PC enjoy a variety without fear of losing what they value most, it's just another day, but lots of other software options to go after

Abear21339d ago

Buy day one and you get…the most buggy and least complete edition and now there’s no way to recoup part of that $70 you paid. Buying day one is the worst thing you can do, thankfully there is Gamepass and it eases that sting on console.

How do you combat slow sales and the used game market when most will play on Gamepass?? You take away the ability to trade it in and boom, more sales

-Foxtrot339d ago

“and now there’s no way to recoup part of that $70 you paid”

This

For people where money is more tight and people have to plan purchases carefully, if they can finish the game and get some money back then it’s a bonus for them

Digital does not have that benefit

It’s the same with collectors editions, it was easier for digital only people to trade their physical game inside a steelbook to their local trade in shop rather than the other way around, they don’t take codes.

aconnellan339d ago

“How do you combat slow sales and the used game market when most will play on Gamepass?? You take away the ability to trade it in and boom, more sales“

With the confirmation that standard edition will have a physical copy, and the Special Edition (which isn’t available via Game Pass), do you still think this?

Gameseeker_Frampt339d ago

@Abear21

Is that why Sony isn't including a disc with the Spider-Man 2 Collector's Edition?

DigitallyAfflicted338d ago

We need to start talking with our money, the only language understood by greedy corporate people!

S2Killinit339d ago

MS being very… clever with the consumer’s right to ownership.

I’ve lost all hope in xbox fan base

Lightning77339d ago

So are you sharing the same energy with Spider-Mans special edition? No just stutters and mumbles.
Lost hope? How do you have hope for a platform you don't even like?

S2Killinit339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

@Lightning77
Yeah, I dont like it when anyone squeezes consumers’ ownership rights, regardless of who is doing it. The difference is that I DONT do what you two are doing to save face for MS! Like WTF man, whats wrong with people. You guys have forgotten how to be gamers because you are so in MS’s palm. They buy entire publishers and you cheer them on for taking games we all should be having, they slowly take game ownership and you say its “clever” or “well Sony did it too so its fine”…

Lightning77339d ago

Explain how am I saving face? Why in the hell would I like companies taking Away options? The slow killing of the frog is literally across the industry with no disc on these premium editions of games some flat out don't have a disc (Alan Wake)

Hell GP is making things worse imo. You can spare all that save face garbage.

I can't tell what a trillion dollar what to do. I've even said I don't care about the ABK deal. MS showcase proves they clearly don't need ABK at all, not even close.

Save all that nonesense and don't lump me im with anyone. It's best to be a multi console owner, instead of wining about everything.

S2Killinit338d ago (Edited 338d ago )

You know damn well this was MS’s vision from back in the xbox one days. Now you make sure to comment that Sony did such and such in order to defend MS. If you had any shred of logic you would either speak against this conduct or at the least you would refrain from defending them. It has come to a point that they know they can do and say whatever they want.

Dont lump you in? Ade you not one of their biggest proponents? If anything others should complain for being lumped with you.

Lightning77338d ago

"You know damn well this was MS’s vision from back in the xbox one days."

Now everyone's slowly doing it so what are we gonna do about it?

"Now you make sure to comment that Sony did such and such in order to defend MS. If you had any shred of logic you would either speak against this conduct or at the least you would refrain from defending them."

Alas this is the problem with you ppl. When you have a strong track record trolling, trashing, every single thing thing MS even the good things you spin into a negative all day every day. My assumptions about you are correct in your fandom all you gotta do is look at your comments. In other words if MS does something like this it's "it's all Xbox and Xbox only! "Only Xbox is doing it! Anti this and that " taking things to the extreme. While completely ignoring your favorite company is doing just that and not holding them accountable either. Again spread the energy.

You have no "hope" for Xbox because you're not an Xbox fan why would you have hope for a console you dont even like? Please explain that weirdness. You have no self awareness in your comments and actions. I can see those things you can't at all. It's bad that MS and is doing it, it's also bad that's Sony's doing. It's not good that SF is 30 it's also not good that 16 dips to 720p during battle. I understand why it's 30 and I understand why it hits 720p it's a dev choice and sacrifices have to be made.

Anyway.

"Dont lump you in? Ade you not one of their biggest proponents? If anything others should complain for being lumped with you."

Proponents for what? You don't like facts that's all I post here. Ppl rather be lied to, purposely post misquotes, out of context quotes, flat out make up their own news I can go on. All I do is clear things up and ppl here can't stand it. I could care any less I'm here to post the truth. I don't know who you think is "with me??"

Becoming quickly an industry standard. *sad noises*

CobraKai339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

It’s so lame that this is the “case” for physical games. I’m still very much peeved that Halo Infinite doesn’t have the game on disc and that special edition Spiderman 2 doesn’t include the disc, but has a disc case, which doesn’t make sense. It’s not about holding an item in my hand, it’s about having a hard copy.

I also like how there’s people claiming it was possible that Bethesda misunderstood the question posed on Twitter. Both the question and the answer was pretty cut and dry.

PhillyDonJawn339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

Lies, I have Halo infinite on disk. Starfield is coming on disk. This was a misspoke. It's the special edition that comes with a code

RpgSama339d ago (Edited 339d ago )

Even worse if that's the case, you pay more money for the special edition and you do not even receive an actual physical copy of the game?

CobraKai339d ago

@Philly
I also have Halo Infinite on disc, but there’s no game. Just data to load onto the xbox.

@RPG
It’s what keeps me from considering special editions. It just doesn’t make sense that the standard edition comes with a game disc and the special edition steel book case has a voucher?

PhillyDonJawn339d ago

No no no, you're backtracking/changing your comment. You said there's no disk! There is one. All games are install in today's age im and been going on since last gen.

CobraKai339d ago

Ok. I reread it. I should have said it doesnt have the game on THE disc.

franwex339d ago

Strange. I was expecting them to at least do what they did with fallout and have a couple of MB on the disc to then download like 100 gb

The games are theirs. People just pay to ride the ride.

Skuletor20h ago

Would be nice if the article's writer looked into and reported whether other digital game libraries could be transferred over via will (Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, EGS, EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Launcher etc) instead of this half-baked piece but it's probably the same for all of them anyway

Kornholic20h ago

This seems like a way bigger issue than mandatory PSN account linking for PlayStation games.

So where is the outcry?

Skuletor20h ago

It's not like PlayStation is doing any different.

"You may not sell, buy, trade, or transfer your Online ID, Account or any personal access to PSN Services through any means or method, including by use of web sites."
https://www.playstation.com...

Kornholic54m ago

So you are that saying Steam is being very anti consumer with its policies. That's why I'm so baffled by the lack of outcry from the PC audience.

NotoriousWhiz20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

It's not like your account just stops working when you die. Include your email, account id, and password in the will (including the password to your email) and your survivors should have no problem using your games.

anast17h ago

PC gamers are a different lot. They don't mind renting their games forever, they don't mind spending money on overpriced equipment, and they don't mind fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game, but linking a PSN account demands a riot. This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

Skuletor17h ago

You sure talk a lot of nonsense.Go look up the percentage of digital sales compared to physical sales of PS5 games, then tell me again about "renting" games.

mandf16h ago

Overblown funny and 100percent true

anast15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

There is no option at all to buy a physical copy of a PC game... And more people game on consoles for the reasons that make PC gamers a different lot.

VIK212114h ago

it's not so much the linking but the fact that certain countries aren't allowed to access psn...

VIK212114h ago

@anast I have a disc ps5 since launch, initially I bought some disc games, but I can't be bothered to walk to a physical store nowadays... I just buy the titles when they go on special sale or gray market store like CDKeys...

DustMan14h ago

PSN was a different story altogether. It kept people who bought the game from playing in countries that PSN wasn't supported. I never understood the issue anyway.

I don't know if PC stuff is overpriced considering that you can buy a new video card with the same amount of money you'd spend over 5 or 6 years paying to play games online with a console. I'll never pay double to use the same connection. That is what I'll never understand about console gamers. "let me pay an extra hundred & twenty dollars a year to use the same internet I pay for monthly and use on literally every device in my home for free....except for my Playstation"

Extermin8or3_13h ago

@Skuletor about 50-60% of sales are digital for most games. Meaning 40-50% are physical....

anast13h ago

@VIK

You might not but you are not the expectation that creates a universal.

Skuletor12h ago

@Extermin8or3_
Right and where are you getting that information from?
https://www.statista.com/st...

@anast

"Renting games"
In the fourth fiscal quarter of 2023, approximately 77 percent of Sony Corporation's PlayStation gaming sales were generated via digital downloads.

"overpriced equipment"
Some people are willing to pay a premium for better performance, the way you keep talking about the PS5 Pro on N4G proves you're a hypocrite in that regard but whatever, lol

"fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game"
Most pc games will give the option to scan your system to choose recommended settings or start with moderate settings that will run the game fine but you're free to mess around at your own leisure, to improve performance or quality if you wish to. For those that don't want to, there's free software that can do that for you, such as Nvidia's Geforce or AMD's AMD Catalyst. Geforce Experience even gives you the option of choosing whether to prioritize performance vs image quality with a simple slider for easy optimization, it's not rocket science, like you try make it out to be.

"linking a PSN account demands a riot"
Playstation selling Helldivers 2 in regions without the legal means to create a PSN account by Sony's own standards, then telling people in those regions that already bought the game that they can no longer play the game, isn't a cause for concern? Though you've already heard about that but keep going along with your own narrative because of your weird vendetta against PC on here.

This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

PRIMORDUS7h ago

I don't rent I torrent to keep, if they take them down that's ok I don't care I have them LOL. I do buy PC games but very little as I want full control which is why I torrent to keep them in my collection, and I do not give a fuck what the devs or publishers want. I never did never will.

Highly doubt it'll be an actual Batman game that IP belongs to WB Games along with other DC property.

They're making an action adventure game. IMO I think it needs to be another Marvel game despite MS already have Blade as that action Marvel game. Dead Pool? Punisher?

Realistically it'll probably be a new IP entirely.

The_Hooligan1d 7h ago

I agree with you. I think I'll be a brand new IP. Now it could be a superhero themed, kind of like infamous. Speaking of which, Suckerpunch needs to make one after Ghost 2.

neutralgamer19921d 7h ago

would love a infamous collection for ps5/pc

Lightning771d 6h ago

I definitely think it'll be super hero themed game 100%. Something MS needs in their portfolio.

ThinkThink1d 5h ago

Please, no more super hero games.

PhillyDonJawn1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Dead Pool or Punisher would be amazing!!!
Don't tease me like that man lol. I see them making a new IP that's like an arkham knight clone

Dirty_Lemons1d ago

I loved the old Punisher game back in the day. Those executions never got old.

porkChop23h ago

I don't think it needs to be Marvel. It needs to be a totally new IP. That's what Rocksteady should have done after Arkham City. They've pigeonholed themselves as DC devs.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 23h ago
MIDGETonSTILTS171d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

I hope these devs needed support to start/finish (like Stalker 2), vs are basically done with the game but wanted to secure an exclusivity-bonus because they know Xbox needs a system seller (like Titanfall).

It’s a bit strange that they’d rather invest in this game than Tangoworks’ TWO canceled projects; or just trust a single dev from their existing massive stable of talent to emerge with a system-seller themselves anytime soon.

Either way, it is just cool that we’ll likely get a new IP from the geniuses behind the Arkham Trilogy. I wonder how creative they’ll get now that they aren’t married to an established franchise.

darthv721d 7h ago

This is about the former co-founders of Rocksteady and their new studio. So naturally it makes people think its Batman related with the way its worded, even though its not.

-Foxtrot1d 7h ago

Exclusive? Sure

This year alone Microsoft has changed their plans so much with Xbox regarding multiplatform releases as they step closer to just being a full blown third party publisher and it's only been 4-5 months, imagine where we'll be once this game is finished. It will be a completely different landscape.

ThinkThink1d 4h ago

I don't think MS will ever go completely full 3rd party with all of their games. I can see them looking towards expanding their own mobile store and moving into Mac as ways of expanding. I'm sure ms will bring more exclusives over to ps and nintendo, but I don't think it'll be as many games as you think it will. I hope I'm wrong.

Lightning771d 4h ago

The ever contradictions thoughts and actions of MS definitely says otherwise MS changed up so much on the past 6 months of the year I lost count.

Though I'm more declined to believe they also won't go full 3rd party also.

But.

This year they're having Renaissance a super bowl of gaming with Gamepass this year. BO6, older ABK games, Avowed, Indy and other 3rd party exclusives all to grow and expand gamepass. If these games don't grow the service or grow only a little bit. Then you can fully expect MS to hit the red button and put everything everywhere. Satya will have full Xbox take over doing what he wants from that point on next year.

It's up to Xbox to advertise these games and gamepass in the next 6 months or so get the word out.

Profchaos1d 3h ago

The more the news evolves the more I'm inclined to believe we will see MS embrace full third party status but not call it third party in their word soup ways.

It will be Xbox everywhere plays best on a Xbox.

Next gen Xbox is rumoured to be a reference design similar to the 3d0 where any company can make and sell it.

If you're offloading hardware costs to a third party yet still profiting from the games then you've cut out losses on the hardware you still have a store front that users can use and still make a 30 percent cut on that.

Your games sell for a profit on PS and Nintendo platforms and on Xbox reference hardware along with PC

You lose .kney on DLC and games sold on a competitor storefront they are seemingly already comfortable with this.

The ms bean counters are coming for the ROI that was promised they don't care if they kill the brand as it stands Xbox was never a profitable business it was always just done for reputation

PhillyDonJawn1d 3h ago

@Lightning the would end the console then. No one would buy Xbox over PS at that point cause now you get both with just a PS. If GP flop for them, Logically, rolling back on GP would be the smarter than to do. No more day 1 title. Less quality titles. They'd lose subs but people would go back to buying the games.

Lightning771d 1h ago

@Philly They could scale back gamepass put Indies only, AAA 1st party games coming 4 to 6 months from release. The thing is MS will have to tell their fans to buy their games again and that's gonna take years and years to condition them to buy games again. MS will lose money from that also. They'll lose out on gamepass revenue, lose out on games sales because their fans don't buy as many games anymore.

I can't see them scaling back or axing gamepass it does make them allot of money, they just want more money from it. They're not gonna condition their fans to start buying games either.

As I said they'll go full 3rd party and yes you ate right, if they do that then there would be no reason to buy the next Xbox. I know j won't be, you better hope the next 6 months they advertise the games and GP there little hearts out because this could be it.

ThinkThink14h ago

Like, I can see them porting flight simulator, but not the Forza games.

I can see them porting state of decay 3, but not halo or gears.

I think sony will get blade, doom and elder scrolls 6, but not perfect dark or fable.

RE Zero would be better to do first over RE1 because they can tie the story into RE1 more.

The original RE Remake was weird because Rebecca never mentioned anything about what happened in Zero and it felt so disjointed because Zero was developed during the Remake and they clearly didn't share any notes with one another.
