Devs made games with both good SP and online MP modes in the late 90's and early 2000's on PC, like Worms 2/Armageddon and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

There's no need to water down any mode.

Look, W3 is a great game, with some cool things going on like wind simulation and whatnot. But it's not a patch on something like GTA V. I can't walk Geralt down a set of stairs without him looking weird and doing a tumble accidentally. In GTA 4 Niko's feet climbs each individual step. It's a small, borderline pointless detail, but GTA is so full of those kinds of things that they add up to create something special.

Rockstar has created an interesting dynamic where they're the only ones who CAN top the prior GTA entries.

Other developers in theory could afford to make competitor to it, but without an established track record to bank on, the risk of it failing is too high to gamble.

I have a hard time believing that a living,
breathing dynamic open world would be difficult to sell in a variety different styles (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Historical etc.)

I think it is more a lack of technical experience thus making open world attempts feel like Cyberpunk 2077.

I have zero doubts that a new mainline gta game will be a good game but I just hope.it manages to produce a better single player narrative and focus than 5 which was still a good game with a decent story but not the strongest from rockstar unlike gta 4 or rdr 2 or even san Andreas which outshines v in the story department

Rockstar needs to understand their audience. The type of subject matter that these games focus on does not fit in conjunction with "woke" politics. I understand that we live in a world where everyone is learning to be more inclusive/kinder to eachother, that's a great thing. But that's NOT what GTA is about.

Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll have never been about "respect women!!!" It's been about toxic fun. That's what the audience wants. South Park is the same way. And GTA is similar in that regard. GTA was always successful because people enjoyed the toxicity. You can't have a drug-dealing, gang-banger protagonist who is also a feminist trans-ally.

I get what you're saying but I'd have a little more faith that Rockstar knows what they're doing. Not just faith but they have endless metrics on what works and what doesnt. They've been around long enough to weather the storms of Conservative (called prudes at the time) family values crowd calling for censorship while the liberal crowd cried for creative freedom to offend in good fun, then seeing a full reversal to the liberal (now labelled woke) crowd calling for things to be revised while the conservative crowd cries for creative freedom to offend in good fun.

I've been wondering how they going to implement GTA6 online. Are they going to make everyone start from scratch,bk to the old times of only stranger missions and shop hold ups?..If I recall correctly it took years for the first heist's to come out?
Or will they be able transfer everything gained and every hour played to the new game?.
