The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Review | Gamespot

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best games ever made.

This is one of the best role-playing games ever crafted, a titan among giants and the standard-setter for all such games going forward. Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game's quiet denouement. But while the grand clashes are captivating, it is the moments between conflicts, when you drink with the local clans and bask in a trobairitz's song, that are truly inspiring.

Best RPG in a long time for sure!

also it's the first game on PS4/X1 to get 10 from gamespot.

Games4Gamers3316d ago

Man no im pissed off because I want the game NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

Arkardo3316d ago

Jeez, I'm trembling and suffering from goosebumps Damn it!

I told myself not going to read any news from this game!

Lord_Sloth3316d ago

I'm uber excited as well. Game looks awesome!

FarEastOrient3316d ago

D@#" we still have to wait a week!

kingeliran3316d ago

GIVE ME THE GAME ALREADY !

BeefCurtains3316d ago

Man, I'm so excited. But have we learned NOTHING from recent reviews??? Taking the 10/10 skeptically until we get some more hands on reviews...

mikeslemonade3316d ago (Edited 3316d ago )

I predicted it will get a 91. After 20 something reviews it has a 92. So it will end up scoring 91 because the score generally usually goes lower.

This is proof that I'm objective and I'm realist. I'm able to accurately predict a score based on previews and news. Haha so what I speak is true. You guys just don't like to hear the truth.

Deadlead3316d ago

Impressive score! It's soo refreshing for a developer to have confidence in their game and not ban reviews until AFTER release.

psman0123316d ago

@mikeslemonade Should we make a shrine of you or something because you predicted an average review score correct?

StarLord_Who3316d ago

How the hell do you know?

starchild3316d ago

Wow, I expected good things from this game, but I never expected Gamespot of all places to give it a 10 out of 10. They are usually a bit harsher than other outlets.

The game looks amazing, though, and I'm happy these reviewers are so impressed with it.

First Bloodborne, now Witcher. RPG reigns!!!
Expect more RPG GOTY contenders this year :)

Paytaa3316d ago

I feel like it's going to come down to Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, MGSV, and the new Deus Ex for GOTY.

joab7773316d ago

I know it's not a 10, that it isn't perfect. I'm sure there are framerate issues b/c it's pushing the boundaries on this tech. I know that trying to make a deep story in a huge open world is VERY difficult. You just cannot have the same continuous intensity TW2 had.

That said, I am glad that GameSpot can see past the small hiccups and reward a game of this quality and magnitude.

I love Indies, and shorter games too, but a game of this scope, must get love for its overwhelming accomplishment. These are rare games that come along too often. I can't wait.

Gazondaily3316d ago

10 doesn't mean perfection. Is there even such a thing?

This is Gamespot's review and they've awarded it the max score because its one of the best in its class.

Svinya3316d ago

A 10 has NEVER meant perfect from ANY reviewer, EVER...

Why do people still not get that?

Kingscorpion713316d ago (Edited 3316d ago )

The good news is PS4 owners get to experience two masterpieces The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne

andibandit3316d ago

<Insert random reason for mentioning> BLOODBORNE!!1!1!!

DEEBO3316d ago

10/10 good Lord!

Just preorder my copy at gamestop, not midnight 😳 but I get a kickass key chain with the preorder.

Deadlead3316d ago

Lol well that should hold you over

Kingdomcome2473316d ago

Is it weird that I've been wearing my Witcher keychain to bed?

Taero3315d ago

@1.6.3 Wait...you got your keychain when you pre-ordered? I thought that you got it when you picked up the game as I never got mine...

Kingdomcome2473315d ago

@Taero- I work at Gamestop, and I got mine as soon as we got them in, about five days ago.

The first time in my years as a gamer & maybe because I'm interested in this game have I ever witnessed a reviewer giving a game a 10/10.

kingeliran3316d ago

They Forgot to add the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is Freaking 137 Sqm,
and Skyrim is 39 Sqm, so ITS 3.5X Skyrim size!!!!

THATS ENORMOUS!!

showtimefolks3316d ago

After read/watching other reviews there is no way this game is a 10/10. In a single player rpg the story matters but when it's filled with fetch quests than not so much

And don't get me wrong I am buying the witcher 3
I love cd red project

But reviews like this prove that even reviewers actually also buy into the hype.

Imo these 10/10 have ruined review expections. Now when someone offers a big game 8/10 like some have done to witcher 3, than people go crazy and say the reviewers are wrong

starchild3316d ago

You obviously haven't read many reviews then. It actually seems like you only read IGN's review. Most reviewers have praised the storytelling and the depth and quality of the side quests.

Here's Gamespot's summary, for example:

THE GOOD
Phenomenal, beautiful open world that juxtaposes violence with beauty
Absorbing story wonderfully balances world politics and personal conflict
Fantastic detailing reveals the consequences of your actions
Armor designs, potion system, and sign upgrades provide an excellent sense of growth
There's so much to do--almost all of it brimming with quality

Revolver_X_3316d ago

LOL, the IGN review is pretty much the only one saying that. Good job at stretching one opinion into "reviews".

Jalva3316d ago

Everyone said the same when Bloodborne's reviews released, they will say the same once again when MGSV's reviews release, in truth the GOTY for 2015 will be highly subjective as the quality is just too high for everyone to settle on one game, Dragon Age: Inquisition won last year but I doubt it would even get nominated this year.

Brotard3316d ago

True we are getting so spoiled this year going to be one of the best years in a long time, bloodborne, witcher 3, mgsv, batman, halo 5 among other heavy hitters! L

Gazondaily3316d ago

Ah yeah, Bloodborne, The Witcher 3 and MGS 5. Will be interesting. Great gaming year for sure.

Wii_nes_0073316d ago

Game of the year award is kind of a farse. Each gaming website has their own opinion to whats goty. 2014 goty was Shadows of Modor, Dragon Age, Bayonetta, Super Smash Bros. and the list goes on. I wish we got a definitive goty annually, but it all comes down to which gaming site you visit.

jznrpg3316d ago

I agree totally, Dragon Age won because the games last year were all good at best, none were great games, there were better indies . Bloodborne , Witcher, MGS will all have a legitimate claim to GOTY , imo.

ThePope3316d ago

I also think everyone is forgetting Halo 5.

LakerGamerEnthusiast3316d ago (Edited 3316d ago )

Could you all even fathom how momentous of an issue this would be if Uncharted 4 was slated for release this year too...

Good issue, for sure - but inconceivably difficult for the real judges to choose.

I guess good and bad that Uncharted 4 is going through that extra phase to make sure its top notch - despite having to endure such a grueling wait.

hades073316d ago

And dont forget Batman: Arkham Knight. Unlike most years this is a busy summer for gaming.

wsoutlaw873316d ago

If batman delivers like it should, we could have 5 different games winning goty honors. Great year so far. I should have my platinum in bloodborne right before this comes out, so im happy.

Kingdomcome2473316d ago

I truly can't envision it winning, but I can honestly see ROTTR receiving some mentions as well. I have a gut feeling that it's going to be great. I think Bloodborne, TW3, MGS V, Arkham Knight, and quite possibly Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be the ones left fighting it out in the end, though.

wsoutlaw873315d ago

Well there is no real winner for goty. Every crappy website give out their own.

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan65d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

shinoff218389d ago

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Cacabunga89d ago

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG
LINK 2 the past
Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno89d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name89d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno89d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno89d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure88d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
