New Xbox by NSA partner Microsoft will watch you 24/7

Possible privacy violations by Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox One have come under new scrutiny since it was revealed Thursday that the tech giant was a crucial partner in an expansive Internet surveillance program conducted by the National Security Agency and involving Silicon Valley’s biggest players.

I can think of a real time multiplayer game/TV series "run away from the Feds" where they give an Xbox One to dealers/criminals, then they try to run away connecting to the internet once every 24 hours.

XBOX DONE, I'm sick of any MS press, good or bad. The bad just outweigh the good.

dcbronco4020d ago

THamm that's only if you listen to people that live in a box. The reality is NSA has been listening to phone call, copying fazes and copying activity on the Internet for years. Every once in a while people are reminded that this is happening and they lose their minds. The FBI does the same thing on the Internet. They copy every single thing done on the Internet. NSA admits it to a certain extent. When the head was Lt. Gen. Michael V. Hayden he decided to come clean about Echelon. But it is rumored that there is a far better system now in place. Hayden is now the head of the CIA.

The FBIs program was called Carnivore. They claimed it didn't exist. Then they said it couldn't do what the claims said. The claims were that it could copy everything done on the Internet. Then one day someone leaked classified e-mails of them talking about it being used to copy every action on the Internet for 3 months straight and the system didn't break a sweat. Congress told them to destroy it, but it was supposedly continued through a new system.

Trust me, Kinect is the least of your problems.

S2Killinit4020d ago

@dcbronco
according to what you are saying, if they are already doing it, then there is no reason to fight it. First, I don't know how to tell you that that is not how you should look at it. Second, you realize that the kinect is embedded with information gathering technology the likes of which we have not dealt with before. It's like big brother's wet dream. On top of it all, this one is right in your living room. The home used to be the last bastion of personal space, it was sacred. This is a place where you could take shelter from the influences of the outside world. Today that sacred place is under attack. In the past you would not allow a Microsoft employee to come to your house and collect personal information about you, but as technology advances, companies seeking a higher profit look for new ways of gathering information that gives them an edge against the rest, its a free for all and our personal rights are being violated with our own permission.

dcbronco4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@S2Killinit

No, what I'm saying is that gamers need to get their heads out of their a--es. The world doesn't revolve around them and everything isn't MS being evil. But worse of all is the Americans too stupid to understand their rights under the Constitution. If you are so uninformed about such a serious issue that has been around for almost twenty years, you don't deserve privacy. If a stupid belief that MS can openly violate US law is one you have, then you deserve no privacy. That person needs a 24hr nanny to make sure they don't hurt themselves. The Constitution is taught in elementary school. And gets refreshed until you graduate high school. If you somehow still missed it, your privacy is low down on the list of your problems.

Look at the links, look at the dates. None of it has anything to do with Kinect. The government has been watching you and recording your every move through every electronic device with WiFi you own. On every connection to the Internet you have. And they store it and organized it. They do profiles on communities so they know what to tell them to pimp them. But again, if Kinect was your introduction to all of this, you don't have time for gaming. Read a book, watch the news and go outside for a long, long time. Because you have been in a bubble and missed a ton.

MS can not invade your privacy by law. The government can't either. But MS will lose a suit if they are caught and the user agreement and other things makes that easy. But the government has done it again and again and have gotten caught and nothing has been done. But now Kinect is the motivation to care. Please. And the idiots in this country will still vote in the same people to congress because they also know nothing about politics. I guess we'll have to wait until MS performs a coup before anyone notices.

Scared place under attack. Pfftt! It hasn't been sacred in twenty years. Long before twenty years. The government will always do whatever it wants because Americans are stupid and uneducated. All of their interest reside in entertainment. As long as it doesn't involve Kim K or consoles, it didn't happen.

I think Germany and Australasia have both voiced and are looking at privacy concerns. Neither have said if they'll block it on those grounds.

Toon_Link4020d ago

Looks like Microsoft are looking to become the thought police from the book 1984. For people that haven't read it in 1984 everyone is monitored and anything you say or do can land you in a lot of trouble if big brother sees your actions as a problem.

I really recommend reading that book before you decide if its ok for a giant company like Microsoft to put an always online always listening camera in your house.

Yeah, 1984 and Animal Farm.

A frog, slow boiled, will never jump from the pot.

This is exactly why MS cancels pr shows.
Because of the immature journalism these days thats all based on false assumptions.

greenpowerz4021d ago

I agree with fox.

Media in the gaming industry these days are acting like media did in the last American election when republicans and Mitt Romney conditioned the American media to practice garbage journalism. Obama and team simply stopped exposing themselves to the gotcha journalism and went to the people.

lastofgen4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

@DayZ

you want to provide us with a link supporting Microsoft's current stance/position rather than a screenshot taken that could have been easily photoshopped??

stuna14021d ago

But tell me did you see the other article on the page you linked too? FBI & Microsoft take aim at global cyber crime ring, but yet their a software company.

Godmars2904021d ago

@Foxgod:

All this really started because of the initial leak, then the Orth incident. In all that time MS made no effort to respond to rising criticisms and even posters such as yourself insisted that they didn't need. Then they went and confirmed all of them. Badly.

That things have only somehow gotten worse is their own fault.

GribbleGrunger4021d ago

Don't be ridiculous, Fox, that's a reason to have MORE interviews.

ShwankyShpanky4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

Hm.... who to believe... Microsoft PR statement, or actual NSA documents? Gee, tough call.

"Microsoft made no mention of the PRISM program in a statement released after the Post report, and denied it was part of any voluntary data collection mechanism."

Instead of sidestepping the issue, maybe MS can just explain why their name is all over the PRISM documents.

Documents: U.S. mining data from 9 leading Internet firms; companies deny knowledge
http://www.washingtonpost.c...

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track one target or trace a whole network of associates, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post.

Equally unusual is the way the NSA extracts what it wants, according to the document: “Collection directly from the servers of these U.S. Service Providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.”

http://www.washingtonpost.c...

Microsoft – which is currently running an advertising campaign with the slogan "Your privacy is our priority" – was the first, with collection beginning in December 2007.

CIA Chief: We’ll Spy on You Through Your Dishwasher
http://www.wired.com/danger...
March 15, 2012

More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you through them.

Earlier this month, Petraeus mused about the emergence of an “Internet of Things” — that is, wired devices — at a summit for In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm. “‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft.”

All those new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a “person of interest” to the spy community. Once upon a time, spies had to place a bug in your chandelier to hear your conversation. With the rise of the “smart home,” you’d be sending tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when you use the lighting app on your phone to adjust your living room’s ambiance.

“Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,” Petraeus said, “the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.”

Petraeus allowed that these household spy devices “change our notions of secrecy” and prompt a rethink of “our notions of identity and secrecy.” All of which is true — if convenient for a CIA director.

S2Killinit4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

This article doesn't say they aren't part of the NSA. Where did you pick that up? I read the whole thing. All it was was Microsoft's statement in its defense saying "they don't reveal information until there is a government order to do so."

@lastofgen
Just do your own search. Read Forbes, I'm sure you consider them legit source. Its not a big secret, instead of arguing here, go read it up and you will see that Microsoft is, in fact, part of the PRISM program. That's the end of it.

Lol!!! That reminds of years back!!!
I was playing Burnout Paradise city, and another player had the PlayStation eye hooked up,...and well. In that game, there was settings for the camera to take a picture of you when you get taken down from another player.
After the game I went threw the list....! I could not believe my eyes!!!

"One picture had a guy playing in his shorts, with her wife Brest feeding her baby!!!!"

Lol....I even send the picture to the guy, and never got a respond.

wellard4020d ago

@dcbronco

Thats great information but did either of those 2 systems put an HD camera and microphone in your living room and/or kids bedrooms?

My concern is having a camera that we as parents have no control over, what so ever, pointed at our children, in their bedrooms.

Yeah yeah we hear all this schmuckus about MS will never farm data and if they did it would be kept totally private, yadda yadda yadda.

Didn't google just get handed papers by a federal judge stating that the FBI must be given whatever info it wants on Google accounts without the issue of a warrant?

Do any of us actually think for a second that the US government would pass indefinitely on an opportunity
to exploit a system like kinect?

These aren't fanboy concerns, these are genuine concerns about the privacy of my family and myself in my own home. While MS maintain this need to have a camera plugged in and switched on 24/7 i simply cannot and will not purchase this system no matter how much i would like to continue supporting the Xbox brand. (im an avid (or rather was) fan of xbox) so dont judge this comment based on what system you have under your television.

indysurfn4020d ago

I have been saying this for years, but now I think people will listen. I know that Microsoft knew they could not compete with Japanese on turn based RPG's. So they have been having people review turn based RPG's, and pay them to dog it out for being a turn based RPG. And to trick people into thinking that turn based rpg's as obsolete, and we have moved on to action rpg's. when in fact the first RPG's (after pen and paper) where ACTION rpg's THEN later came turn based. And people have fallen for it. Even Square enix resigned president admitted they lost there way when resigning, for moving away from what people wanted. (yes I'm ranting)
now square has promised to return to their roots. (it takes awhile) meanwhile other companies have taken japans rpg market, with turn based rpg's not action. About 15 years ago 10 percent of games in japans top 50 where jrpgs. NOW every week at LEAST 40% of the most wanted, and 50% of total sales in Japan of the top 50 charts are rpg's not western rpg's but jrpgs! Microsoft has no effect on the minds of the Japanese (whew!). I hope people start to realize that real JRPGs are addictive.

when Microsoft talks cerebral and twitch. they are really talking turn based and thinking(cerebral), and action(twitch). Everything does not need to be a reflex action!

Microsoft, along with other tech companies including google, have already denied participation in this program, which has been going on for years. Isn't this article just blatantly misrepresenting the facts?

http://www.neowin.net/news/...

ThatCanadianGuy5144021d ago

Are you serious? That link just CONFIRMS it.
Only instead of a steady stream of everyones info being sent, they only give the info they're asked to give.

Which me it's all being stored for when they're asked.

300K servers indeed.

aviator1894021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

The link I provided only confirms probably what all tech companies are required to provide if the government has legal justification on individual accounts. Companies are powerless in that regard.

And the link also confirms ms's non-involvement in this nsa program, which is a broad-based information collection program not dependent on individual inquiries. This article is implying that ms is participating in this program, which isn't the case at all.

lastofgen4021d ago

I don't think you read both articles correctly. They're not the same thing..

I'd say more, but I think aviator explains it pretty well in his or her reply to you.

Is Xbox Going Multi-Platform The Right Decision For The Console Market?

Can we stop pretending that Xbox has any great influence over the console market?

All they can do is try and steer their own Destiny. They have very little to do with what the other players in the console market are doing.

And yes, going 3rd party is pretty much their only option and is good for them.

RaidenBlack3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Still whatever little direct competition they're offering against Sony ... that'd be gone, which is never good for consumers.
I know Sony will continue to apease the gamers but without any proper competition in same space, they might not work at the fullest efficiency.
(Taking into account, thats generally been agreed here, that Nintendo has long been not the direct competitor to either MS or Sony)

xHeavYx1h ago

The " without any proper competition in same space, they (Sony) might not work at the fullest efficiency" narrative has been proven false for years. Let's stop pretending that, in terms of games, Xbox has been any competition to Playstation.

fsfsxii1h ago

Sony had 0 competition for most of its playstation business, and they still succeeded, the only thing xbox introduced was paid online and dlc

maniacmayhem1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Sony had little to no competition during the PS2 era and they have an iconic catalog.

I don't think Sony needs competition in the console space to still release great games. It would be the games that would be competing against each other.

Einhander197236m ago

Xbox does not need to exist for PlayStation to have competition.

They compete with Nintendo, PC, streaming and countless other devices.

Yes release games on other platforms

Your own gamers still get the games day one on GP. So GP will grow and stay stabilize

By releasing the games on PC,PlayStation and next switch they can get $70 for their games.

MS didn't invest 100 billion for nothing. This way Xbox generates way more revenue

anast5h ago

The show was like a sub-show for Sony. All these games are coming to PS5.

4h ago
outsider16244h ago

You gotta admit though..xbox showcase was actually really great.

RpgSama4h ago

I mean, yes, it was an Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda presentation, they just so happened to buy all of those publishers, nothing we would not have seen on any other award show if they had not bought developers that were and STILL are developing multiplatform games.

If you remove them you are left with Microsoft game studios, another Fable, Another Gears, Perfect Dark which for me didn't look all that great, Avowed, Age of mythology and south of midnight (might be missing something I guess)

anast3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

No better than any other show. There weren't any major new announcements, which is what everyone has been complaining about. The bar shouldn't get lowered for a trillion dollar company.

crazyCoconuts3h ago

"another Fable, another Gears, Perfect Dark"?
That's a lot of pretty great "anothers".
I could use a few of those "anothers" from Sony right now.

anast,

"All these games are coming to PS5."

Very disingenuous statement... Some, but not all.

Oh, so that is the new narrative, "sub-show for Sony." lol, wow.

The sad part is that you are clearly and fully aware that it is very unlikely for any 1hr and 30min gaming presentation show to showcase ALL Exclusives, it just doesn't happen.

And don't you think it sad that MS had a better Sony showing than Sony? If I were you, I wouldn't consider that a flex, lol.?

anast27m ago

They are coming to PS5, the ones that matter of course.

There is nothing sad here. You might need to start your argument without an emotive.

I don't think they had a better showing. Unless we lower the bar for only Xbox.

crazyCoconuts3h ago

None of us really know how much they're going third party. They're still ACTING like they want to protect the platform - no mention of PS5 in their show, still marketing the console, still using the Xbox logo.
Yeah Phil acknowledged more is coming to PS5. But is that Indiana Jones? Perfect Dark? Gears?
If they keep those key properties in their stable it's not accurate to label them as simply 3rd party.
They may very well still be in the game after all...

anast29m ago

@Coconut

Sony did the same in their last. They showed games that were already announced.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 27m ago
Giga_Gaia4h ago

We need to stop pretending like Xbox matters and has any influence in the industry.

By entering the industry, Microsoft made it worst, everything bad in the industry can be tied to them (like paid online and DLCs). The industry would be better off if they had never been in it.

Before you say Sony would have no competition, they would still have PC and Nintendo. As they are right now, Microsoft are not competition, they don't actually matter.

crazyCoconuts3h ago

I think you're mostly right. They've been failing on console and will most likely drop out.
But the concern a lot of us had was that they would use their $ to win monopolistically. They've already bought a huge number of big studios. Going multi-platform would alleviate that concern.
But they could still turn the screws, this game isn't over quite yet... They're sending mixed signals.

CrimsonWing694h ago

I think in Xbox’s direness it is, but let’s not pretend like they don’t understand the value of exclusiveness to their platform. Not every damn Xbox game is coming to PS5 and the stuff that has hit have either been GaaS games or games that didn’t exactly sell gamgbusters and are extremely niche.

When Halo, Gears, Forza, Perfect Dark, Fable, etc. start coming to PS5 then that’s pretty massive and also diminishes any reason to own an Xbox.

LucasRuinedChildhood4h ago

Doom isn't niche. It was heavily implied that all Bethesda games, outside of games with contractual agreements and the existing multiplayer games, would all be exclusive to Xbox.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Ok, sorry, Doom is the exception.

My point is Xbox is still keeping exclusives for their bigger games. What’s been released are GaaS: Sea of Thieves, Grounded aka Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and then niche stuff like Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush. Then you got Doom coming out, which is an outlier, I suppose.

crazyCoconuts3h ago

It's not niche but it's not everything.
MS has got a HUGE cache of IP and studios now

Scissorman4h ago

It's the only decision. Hardware sales are on a sharp decline and Game Pass growth has stagnated.

GamerRN23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

I'll be honest, if they don't announce some major shit, this could be the nail in the coffin.

If I hear about major 1st party titles going multiplatform, it's over.

They need to build the brand trust right now. A lot of damage has been done.

We need bangers, AND some news about next Gen.

Flawlessmic23h ago

It's just started 4 games in and it's already been a fantastic show.

This is gonna be the best showcase in years

New Doom dark ages anounced for PS5 as well...

So far this is a great show, and mostly all GamePass games? Looks like the bangers are finally coming!

Investments finally paying off.

Now they need new hardware so they can start over

@obcured:”BEST XBOX SHOWCASE EVER!!!!”
You need at least 10real people to agree in writing with you for anyone here believing you after saying the same thing year over year for the last 10+ years.
Now that I finished watching the show for me personally it was a ok as I don’t play FP games but that’s just me and I can recognize that for people that like FPG it’s a amazing show so ENJOY them.
Another thing and I hope for Microsoft sake they don’t do their next system digital only based on the S sales over the X, I hope they’ll learn the lesson of not making a lower power version just to try to undercut their competitor.
Metal gear 3 looked sweet.

well said Sonic. Competition is beneficial for us gamers

Master-Tonberry20h ago

Absolutely agree, many of the games shown are also coming to PS5 (despite MS hiding other platforms from the reveals) but the genuine exclusive all look great. Nintendo will obviously continue to carve it's own path and will be very busy with the Switch 2, but Sony and PlayStation really needs to pull it's socks up and start bringing out the big guns or people are going to start losing faith. Hopefully the rumours of a big PlayStation Experience show later this year are true.

anast4h ago

The main knock on Sony is that there haven't been any major first party announcements. Xbox does a show with no major announcements.

The_Hooligan21h ago

This showcase was great. Not just a great Xbox showcase but in general the best one this year so far.

Kurisu23h ago

I'm tuned in now. I can't say I've ever been big in to Xbox, but I got myself a Series S when it launched. Can't say I've used it much but I'm intrigued to see what's in the pipeline.

I'm definitely of the mind that d4 was complete crap at release...but the state of it right this moment is not complete crap. They've simplified a lot which actually helped their overtly stupid itemization.

End game content is still kind of stupid but at least progression and itemization is better.

@crows90

Maybe but it is still boring. It might be a little bit better but it is not a good game.

Xbox had typically kept the old e3 dates alive it seems to always fall on Queens / Kings birthday holiday in Aus only reason I've noticed as it used to be a day off to engross myself in e3 showcases but nowadays it's nothing

The rumor is 30 games with a nearly 2 hour show. I hope so I, been saying they need to go balls to the wall with their showcase. That's according to Grubb again. Yeah a huge pinch of salt he's only been wrong or half right about some stuff.

There's also suppose to be a Wu Tang Clan game that's a kungfu action RPG featuring the legendary hip hop group New Yorks own Wu Tang Clan. You read right Wu Tang Clan kungfu action RPG.

Sounds weird, random and quirky but hey I'm down to see it.

State of decay 3 info is leaking on twitter!

Looks good. Personally don’t play horror/ zombie games, but I appreciate it’s a good game so that’s a win for Xbox fans.

Lord knows they need a win at the moment

ThinkThink1d 16h ago

Appreciate the concern, but I think we'll be just fine. Hope you all enjoy tomorrow's show.

"The rumor is 30 games with a nearly 2 hour show. I hope so I, been saying they need to go balls to the wall with their showcase."

MS had the best showcases in the last few years.

This year, the bar is so low with those last showcases, that imo, MS and Ubisoft doesn´t even need to make much of an effort to beat them.

"That's according to Grubb again. Yeah a huge pinch of salt he's only been wrong or half right about some stuff."

Grubb was right about the last State of Play. Just a few days for the end of the month, he´d continued and insisted that it was going to happen. And he was right! Sony made a last minute announcement for whatever reason, but the guy was spot on.

Lightning7723h ago

Grubb was only half right. He only got the month down, which was late last month for a PS event but wrong on it being a PS showcase.

Half right at best. He's still not that credible these days. He definitely wasn't spot on.

derek1d 2h ago

Grubb has been pretty spot on in his comments regarding showcases. You can tell he's not guessing, he knows in advance.

Sonic18811d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

Microsoft has had the best showcases for the last 3-4 years. The problem with Microsoft and the Xbox division is their reputation and trademark around the world. That's what's really affecting them.

This show is going to be painful.

Elda1d 22h ago

Hopefully not knowing most games shown will be multiplats & some eventually multiplats.

anast1d 22h ago

The presentation is going to be the painful part. There might be some good games though.

You can always make a drinking game out of it for every time they say the words "Made for a modern audience".

Crows901d 3h ago

I'd like to be able to watch it through to the end though...

Are you 12 or 13 now? 😂🤣

anast1d 4h ago

This is fun. Some back and forth.

No, but those emojis sure seem like you might be.

Crows901d 3h ago

You'd think that every now and then even these dispassionate fools may do a good job...they've disappointed every single year since before release of Xbox one....that's a really long streak of disappointments...lol

anast1d 3h ago

For sure. they have the money to put on a top tier show, but I'm afraid it will look like an event where super rich people are noticeably trying to be cheap. And they have this strange smile like they know they are trying o get over on people. It just makes for an awkward and tasteless showing.

GotGame81818h ago

My emojis? 😂🤣 Funny kid!

I hope it's a good showing knowing most games that will be shown will be multiplats & XB timed exclusives that'll eventually become multi-plats.

Tacoboto1d 19h ago

It is what it is at this point.

At least the good games will have a chance to be bought, take advantage of the superior DualSense, and *maybe* give those studios a better shot at survival.

They'll also have better shadows, and run with higher dynamic res on the PS5 Pro.

Lightning771d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

So if they're multiplat would you suddenly like Xbox games?

You never have before you've made that clear several times over.

Elda1d 14h ago

I have an XBSX. I also own a PS5 & a Switch. What's your point??

Lightning771d 14h ago

My point is what I said. You don't like Xbox games, you've said it repeatedly. So would you suddenly like Xbox games if they were available on PS5.
