OXM Review: Mass Effect is the Best Game I've ever played

Official Xbox Magazine sings the praises of Mass Effect before rewarding it with a perfect 10. Editor Paul Curthoys writes:

"The experience as a whole - the sense of awe that lasts all game long, and the emotions in your gut as you sit back at the end and just gape - pays off all on its own. The "power weapon pop up" is no different than any other menu system that accompanies pretty much every other RPG in existence. There are quick slots, and you CAN play this game without using that menu, if you should feel so inclined. If it bothers you and you just don't care about all of the special skills you can use, just play it like a shooter and miss out on half the fun. It won't bother me if you don't understand and appreciate what makes RPG's so great.

Havenly Swored:(played full game) it sucks, another i wanna be.it mix of mini-games/timing where you only have to hit as instrected in the screen ect..ect..( 5Hs of gameplay only possible with the power of BR+Cell,they were about to fill 25GB BR disc wooo and only 5Hrs of gameplay)

R&C:(played the demo)you do not have to aim ,just shoot (even if you donot hit the enemies just shoot near them )they wil die.i know it fun gam but that really suck.

MotorStorm(played full game)nice looking game ,good gameplay but nothing special.what i hate the most about it the fact i cannot play it with my mates when they come to my house caz it do not support split-screen.

-Half-life 1/2 ==> first-person yet only appreciated by the hardcore

-Halo 1/2/3 =====> first-person yet only appreciated by the hardcore (that is if you minus the copious amount of marketing Halo 3 had)

Notice a trend here? You should. Most gamers (aka the non-hardcore gamers) don't care about first person games.

It seems like these xbox exclusives get MASSIVE hype with a capital M.

Kind of like Sunshine getting 9+ and then a year later we have the true 8's and 7's coming out.

I mean, as far as hype machines go, Micro is king.

They spend a ton on ads and they get the responses.

To just go ahead and trust xbox mags, though, that is going a little far, even though they are a fairly good read.

This is looking like a 9 for me, I mean it could get more, but after the disappointing and easy gameplay of Bioshock and the Rehash REHASH of Halo 3 I am not just going to be handing out 9.5's like Halloween candy, which seems like its basically what goes around these days. Every hyped game at least gets a 9 unless it happens to be on the PS3.

Anyway, my personal games of the year are Uncharted and AC. If Bioshock had the difficulty turned up and the stupid respawn **** fixed it would be a three way tie.

Ratchet and clank is for little kids and I dont care what any of you say. and as far as tripple a titles, companies like sony and microsoft want you to believe they have AAA titles but in the end it is up to you to decide what you like. for example Ratchet may be a perfect ten for people who like the previous games, but not me cause I dont like kiddy platformers, not since I used to have N64(jet force jemini rules). For me Bio shock was a perfect 10 AAA title because I love FPS and truly can see the polish, and for me It was a breath of fresh air(plasmids/guns). I know many dont like FPS, but AAA and review scores are all up to the individual. If pokemon got a perfect ten from some reviewer would I go buy it because its a AAA title, no because in my eyes itd still be a 5.

It's not like we've EVER seen a publication friendly to Sony post some positive review from one of their first party games. Look that's just the way the industry works. And what's all this 08 stuff. I still say the only games people are anticipating in 08 for the PS3 is MSG4 (possibly KZ2) that PS3 owners MIGHT buy. Outside of that, everything else is multi-console. Or most are over hyping. Not like we haven't seen that before (see Heavenly Sword, LAIR, R&C, War Hawk, to be massively over-hyped only so sell poorly compared to Sony's PS3's user base.) Mass Effect is good... From what I've seen and played, but the graphics aren't all that. They're amazing, don't get me wrong. Gears is still the penical, though. Also, I hear the game is only 20 hours long... So, I don't think it's going to be longer than Uncharted, Heavenly sword and Lair together. Maybe longer than Heavenly sword, Gears of War and Lair put together. Then again, Lair was 9 hours 1st time thru... I don't care who you were. It was 9 hours was the best time you could possibly get on 1st run with the dragons they give you.

Where did you hear the game was 20 hours long? The devs themselves said that doing everything in the game (main quest, the side-quests, etc.) makes it 60+ hours.

This has definitely been one of the greatest years in gaming history. The Xbox 360 has easily proven itself as one of the best gaming consoles of all time. Nonstop AAA titles with great exclusives and better multiplatform games easily crushing the competition. While the ps3 needs a price cutt to gain interest, the 360 uses its games to sell consoles. And EA will be publishing it. If it wasnt going multiplatform, MSFT would have come out and said it already. All games, from now on, will most likely go multi-platform eventually. Theres just no reason not to, except for disc size :-D. Even then, however, multi disc games might get released. First party is the only way this doesnt happen.

I buy good games. I have Halo 3, Gears of War, had Bioshock (traded it in), and im getting Mass Effect.

I never said that the Xbox doesnt have good games. It does, theres no doubt about it. But that doesnt mean it will have better games than the Playstation. Do i think Mass Effect will be REALLY good? Hell yes.

But will it be better than Final Fantasy 13? Theres no way in hell it will be. Is Bioshock good? I thought i was ok. Will it be better than MGS4? Not a chance.

I really dont think Halo 3 is that good, and I definitely think COD4 is better. The point im getting at is, even though in Xbox's second year it has a better line up than PS3, that doesnt mean it is the better console. Its better devs making games on a console they have more experience with.

The PS3 is more powerful, has more features, and will have more/better games by the time its all said and done. The only thing the Xbox may end up having over the PS3 is Xbox Live. Thats why, for shooter games like ive said, it would be better to have an Xbox. Other than that, RPG/Racing/KidsGames/Action games. PS3 is better for all that. I like games other than shooters, so I choose to support the PS3 more. And it will outsell the Xbox360 by huge numbers. THe xbox is not a bad console.

your well-justified concerns. For I have also felt rather uneasy about the recent in-game "eyes" when compared to the original showpiece demos back in 2006.

Fortunately- for you and, of course, me- I just happened to come across IGN's new podcast... you know, the one that is *exclusively* about ME? Yeah, that one. In their semi-boring discussion about graphics, one of the reviewers mentioned that the eyes in ME were markedly better than the demos shown online. Being that the journalist was playing a near-final build of the game... i take it that Bioware was finally able to restore the eerie life-like quality into the NPC's eyes.

So there you have it, my friend. ME is now officially perfect (or close to it)! If you don't believe me, check out the podcast yourself. Be warned though, it is nowhere NEAR as funny and entertaining as the Bungie, or even Gamespot, podcasts.

Anyways I don't think this game is hyped all that much it never was. This title was shown and questions were asked and yes it did happen to blow away the people that has seen it or was told about it by the devs.

Haters ignored it but kept an eye out for it and now that its getting close to release they're comming out of the woodwork; thats what I'v noticed.

These games like: Project offset, Alan Wake and Mass Effect due to their technical prowess is a threat to their console of choice Thats why they hate on ME and why they hoped it was Alan Wake that would be canceled. They had the same heart attack when Project Offset was annouced console exclusive to the 360.

This is great news for gamers and the industry bringing in new gamers, this game can have the same effect the Wii has(interactive movie game) in the more traditional gaming sense though, never the less its an evolution in gaming and thats why it will win GOTY in my opinion(game/movie/your own).

Bully, Kingdom Hearts, and a few Final Fantasies, and several many other games for PS1 and PS2 were million sellers; some weren't even million sellers, but they are regarded as some of the best games ever. All these games I mentioned, regardless of what metacritic says, are better than Halo, the Orange Box, and Call of Duty 4. After all, only 12% of the world likes FPS. I rather play my "8.8" Kingdom Hearts or Bully than Halo "who gives a fvck what it got as scores if it's still a conventional FPS" 3.

I remind you that both PS1 and PS2 had many "8 games" that sold the console. Why? Because there was too much variety, something for everyone. There wasn't a "killer app", but a killer line-up. Seriously, go to VgchartZ, and look at the history of sales (I know VGchartz is not reliable, but it's not reliable for predictions, it is reliable for past sales history, look it up). When you compare N64 to PS1, you realize how "underwhelming" PS1's lineup was next to N64, judging by Sales of games, names (brands) of games AND metascores. N64 had mario 64, Zelda, Mario kart, DK, Banjo, GoldenEye, and many many huge hits. Nintendo completely ravaged the lists with its best sellers, "AAA" titles as mart would consider. However, the genres on PS1 were more varied, and the games got Solid scores in the low and high 80's, but not in the low and high 90's like several of Nintendo's titles. Eventually many games on PS1 became sleeper hits, since every PS buyer was looking for something else, until the point where there were very few overwhelmingly killer titles in sales (less than the N64 had), but many half a million- or a million sellers (more than N64). That's not to say it didn't have its killer titles or 9.0+ games (FF and MGS). Same situation with PS2, although besides FF and MGS, they also had GTA and DMC. Still, these 4 franchises are not the main reason PS2 was successful; PS2 was successful for the same reason PS1 was successful, and it's diversity of games, particularly many niche games.

So, there you have it. As long as Xbox 360 keeps the SAME audience, it'll sell, like the N64, tons of "AAA" games, except the games will be of the same "genre", or not necessarily genre, but the games that appeal to the same group of people. Games that don't sell consoles, but rather, games that sell themselves (such as Bioshock and Mass Effect). Halo is Microsoft's MArio, but that's pretty much it. I really don't see them having as killer a line-up as PS1 or PS2 had. It's much better than the Xbox 1 of course, but I don't see them focusing on diversity as Sony is. Sure, the PS3 is very expensive now, but the "no games" moniker no longer applies. PS3 already has a "killer" line-up; and by that, I mean a bunch of good games in every genre (3rd person action, 3rd person shooter, platformer, off-road racing, first person shooter, adventure RPG, flying simulator, online experiences, soon a racing sim, J RPG, cinematic simulators, open world games, and so on) and not a bunch of "Excellent" games which are mostly of the same genre (Shooters; RPG shooters, 3rd person shooter, 1st person shooter). The only title I give them credit for is Lost Odyssey... but putting myself on the shoes of theMart, I'll wait till it gets his "AAA" approval (9.0 on metacritic, even though that reasoning is flawed); and again, that game will have to surpass FF and WKS if MSFT plans to make some significant ground in japan. YEah, I know it's not just shooters and racing sims... but mostly, it is, and many of the non-FPS/racing games will be ported to PS3 or are very few.

Note: Just because I rather play kindom hearts, bully or other "8.0" games other than your typical PC games made for Xbox 360, it doesn't mean I won't enjoy these games on my 360; they're just not my priority, that's all.

The only thing that should be taken lightly is when the games have few reviews to them, like say CS:S. Games like HS, Lair, Warhawk PGR4 etc arn't triple A simple as that.

I've been waiting for Mass Effect since 2005. To go back even further, when KOTOR (I do believe it won GOTY) came out in 2003 that was the first BioWare game I had ever played. Because I enjoyed KOTOR so much I knew from the start that Mass Effect was going to be even greater.

I never understood what was so great about Knights of the Old Republic, so I was skeptical about Mass Effect in the begining. After reading the reviews, and hands on from Che Chou (formerly of XBN, the best Xbox mag ever) I'm stoked.

I said the same thing about Bioshock, and Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction when I first started playing it. These games are still great but there are just too many great games coming out to judge this early what it the GOTY. I was able to get Mass Effect Early and it is great. I don't think it is the GOTY but it is great. We still have Assassins Creed, HAZE, Uncharted, Kane & Lynch, Super Mario Galaxy, Rock Band, and BlackSite: Area 51 to come out before the judges come out.

i'm pretty sure it's because uncharted just isn't that great. as amazing as it looks, and it does look amazing. definitely one of the top 5 best console games to date in terms of art & graphics, if not the best (it's pretty subjective). the game play is iffy. the whole gears of war style picking up ammo is terrible. in gears the environments are bland compared to the lush environments of uncharted, so it's pretty easy to pick out bullets, where as in uncharted you gotta stand RIGHT on the ammo. it's obviously better than tomb raider but the game play style is the same. if you don't like that type of game you're going to get bored fast.

not to mention they really screwed up firmware 2.0, my ps3 has frozen 4 times since the update and it's never frozen before. ps3 owners bashing games like mass effect is ridiculous. it's not like everything sony makes is automatically good. it's up to them to make good games to win back the gamers, it's not up to us to defend anybody. we support studios by giving them MONEY for good games, if they want our MONEY they have to make good games, it's that simple.

Seeing as how many of us are supposed to be pretty well informed gamers (that's why we come to sites like this, right?), hype shhould be the last reeason any of us give in to buying any single game. We do our research, find out what the game is about, and decide for ourselves if it is something that we will like or not. Then, if need so, we read the reviews and make a final decision.

A lot of gamers are excited about Mass Effect because of Bioware's great track record with RPGs. KOTOR was a game that turned a lot of console gamers on to Bioware, and these people understand what Mass Effect will be bringing to the table, and have a good understanding about the control scheme and all that because it is typical Bioware.

The same can be said for Halo 3. Halo 3 didn't need a lot of hype. It may be hard to believe but millions of people love to play Halo, and already knew that once Halo 3 was announced, they had to have it. I'm sorry that your friends were dissapointed with Halo 3, but seriously, what were they expecting from the game? If it changed too much, it wouldn't be Halo.

ps. if you guys(I mean gamers who are going to play the game) didnt know already, you can carry over your choices from this game to the sequel and then to the final chapter. Thats how Bioware has planned the triology for the 360. As I said before, if EA is going to make this multiplatform, they better get a great team and port the first game to PS3(even if it is a year later). I dont want the trilogy to suffer and its story gimped because of PS3 porting issues. Either that or make it exclusive to 360.

It's not like we've EVER seen a publication friendly to Sony post some positive review from one of their first party games. Look that's just the way the industry works. And what's all this 08 stuff. Halo 3 deserves a perfect 10 for its multiplayer alone. Ratchet gets almost as good a score with a shorter singleplayer game and no multiplayer. If you think halo was over hyped/rated/ranked you should look at you kiddy game ratchet and clank 8 hours worth of gameplay for 60 bucks. This game wouldent have gotten as good a score or as much hype if sony wasnt struggling to sell games.

Be glad that publishers come up with titles like this - for whichever platform. XB360 owners will enjoy their Mass Effect, Halo etc. I will be playing EoJ, R&C, Uncharted. Both will be playing COD4. Wii owners will be playing Zelda, Mario and the sports titles. Great year for gaming in general.

So stop the hating, play the games. The devs made some great titles for us to enjoy regardless of platform. I will hope some of the 3rd party XB360 titles will make it to the PS3. But all the consoles have enough titles out and in the pipeline to keep everyone happy.

Yea ME will be a good game, but its not the second coming of christ. Choice has always been a part of games. I just hope ME doesn't take credit for giving a character an option to choose in a conversation. Hell Ratchet & Clank even does that...

I know for a fact that everyone hyping ME hasn't played baulders gate, or even KOTOR.. Its getting hype based on In_Game_Cinematics that are post processed to death & use higher resolution models..

Notice all the In-Game-Cinematics are close ups of the characters, that BLOOM out the terrible environments. Now, notice when you actually play.. the sets that you play in are barren and empty. Its not art design, its that the 360 cant deal with high res characters & equally high res environments & equally high quality animation data. So enjoy this one for what it is, a GOOD GAME...

But do not dare try to compare it's pretty stills... to any PS3 titles. Because the ps3 titles look good in motion. Ratchet & CLank is one great example, as is Uncharted.

Graphics dont matter? tell that to the people zooming in on tv screens to see the different texture filtering for COD4. The million degree comparisons threads.. Its umpossible for the ps3 to have a good looking AAA title..

ME will be worth the 60 bucks. If you say RROD one more time, well, I'll be FORCED to coin a new phrase for your beloved PS3...now, you have to understand that if MILLIONS of people play Mario Galaxy and think its graphics are the most beautiful ever seen in a video game, it doesn't matter how nice R&C's graphics are...people have to CARE first...talk about graphics until you're blue in the face, but if the game doesn't SELL, NO ONE will know or notice...Mass Effect will sell...and the graphics are gorgeous...you might not think they are "PS3" standards (whateva they may be) but that won't matter if MILLIONS play ME and say that it is the best looking game they have ever PLAYED...do you see my point?

This flaming war has gone way to far, no one likes a big company to have a monopoly and MS and SONY both do but to play a console off another console when both have different games as well as multiplatform games is crazy. One thing is for sure, I would personally like to go on the record and thank the companies that brought their games to both machines. Regardless of which is slightly better everyone will get to experience it. As for the exclusives, whatever kind of game you like, stick with that console. Its like a Big Mac and a Quarter Pounder at Macca's. Whatever moods you're in choose that one. You don't hear people almost fighting over each others burger choices or anything else for that matter. It’s a sad, sad world when people are doing just that. There is a MASS amount of Muppets that post on this web site and although its good for news is also extremely unreliable as the headings are always misleading. I urge Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to put a universally unbiased site together and have reviews and news for each console with association type rules, not to badger each others hardware but to explain and fairly review developer’s efforts in creating interactive entertainment.

If all three companies and any other big companies in a future created such an alliance then all this crap like someone getting shot at a que for a Play station or homes robbed for their Xboxes, should be curded or at least lessened.

Whoever is the ‘Moby’ of the next generation consoles, the ‘Eminem’ should stand up and say to all their fans, enjoy this product for what it is and nothing more.

Mass Effect looks like a great game and is made by one of the best developers in the business... most likely it will be a AAA title....

you guys haven't played the demo of this game and yet you guys are saying that this is going to be the game of the year. i don't think so ... just watching the trailers of this game this is what i noticed, everything looks sterile, clean and spot free unlike ratchet and clank and uncharted drakes fortune where you can see the difference with character and environment animation. unlike mass effect looks like a dead world and the characters move like robots.
how about gameplay. this game looks boring. if i have this game i wont be able to finish it because ill just sleep on it compared to ratchet and clank and uncharted drakes both have gameplays that are very engaging and to die for. how do i know?! simple i played this two game already, even if the other game is just a demo...
again mass effect game of the year?! nope i don't think so. bioshock and uncharted are more qualified than this one..

maybe I didn't realise he was only speaking figuratively, but its only cause I hate all the fanboyness as much as the next person. I actually think Mass Effect's gonna be a good game and will shift a lot of copies all over the world. Therefore I wouldn't really say that I'm scared of mass effect's release because I'm not really involved in this whole ridiculous console war and don't want to see one console succeed at the expense of the other. This is because I think the competition is healthy, its good for the gamer, by which I mean that developers look to make more challenging games, one of which happens to be mass effect, in order to attract the customer.
