Xbox 360 Hardware Failures - Is It Time for Consumer Action?

GamePolitic's Xbox 360 is currently visiting Texas.

GamePolitics, of course, is headquartered near Philadelphia, so they're not seeing much of one another these days. The reason for the long-distance relationship? Their 360, which experienced the dreaded red lights of death failure only weeks after purchase, is undergoing warranty repair.

So are a lot of other gamers' 360's, apparently.

I'm sorry, you can post all the fan polls, blog entries, and rumor sites that give all the fake statistics that you want, but this all fanboy garbage at this point. Nothing is worth getting worked up about until we hear figures from MS, which will probably be about the same time Sony gives us all their RSX data (aka probably never). The failure rate for 360's is definitely high, but not 30% or even close. At the highest the failure rate is %10, which is really high for a consumer good, but if it was any higher than that then we'd be seeing articles from the New York Times or Wall Street Journal. NOT articles from Fanboy Weekly.

Man, this site is getting bad. A guy (me) makes a common sense statement and bubbles get taken away. I have no proof, but no one else does either right now. That's the point. Only MS has the official numbers, and I'd be curious to hear what they are. My post had to do with the fact that all of these MS failure rate articles aren't coming from reputable sources. If there was such a huge uproar from consumers then it would be reported in major news outlets, and it simply isn't at this point. So, I made an educated guess of 10%, because anything higher than that would be a huge deal. Everything seems so much more dramatic on this site, cause people post the same article from 30 different URL's and everyone thinks it's the end of the world. This is the same for PS3 and Wii news, it's just out of line.

I've been told by 360 owners that if I buy a 360 buy it from Best Buy and pay the extra $60 for the extended warranty. If I'm paying $400 dollars for what is supposed to be a quality console why should I fork over another $60 dollars for "peace of mind" for three years?

Provide your proof mr murda. You can't spout #'s and not support them with a link or a direct quote from MS (who refuses to even discuss it). Polls are the only means of measuring what is going on. This isn't FUD. People's 360's are dying multiple times. MS needs to be held accountable until the correct it and it becomes a non issue.

@ mr murda Part II: A majority of people on my friends list, on other message boards I frequent, and my own personal experience is reputable enough for me to know that it is a problem that happens far too often. MS's stance (or lack thereof)on this is more troubling to me than how valid a source is. Whether you like it or not, the 360 is faulty. When a company refuses to continue fixing a system b/c of an "endemic issue," you have to admit there is a major problem.

The 360 has a strong lineup of games, by far better than the other next gen systems combined 'at this time.' If they don't correct this by the time quality software and price drops occur (shortly) they will have a problem.

I can't help but feel like Microsoft was hasty when they began production of the Xbox360.
Any amount of DECENT hardware testing would have given M$ an opportunity to see the Ring of Death.
What's more scary is that there is a good chance they KNEW about the defect, and chose to ignore it and go into full production anyhow to meet their deadline.
This is a classic case of QUANTITY of QUALITY.
There is NO WAY that Microsoft was unable to produce this error prior to going into production if they did VERY MINIMAL hardware tests.
If they truly DID NOT know about this problem, that speaks VOLUMES about their inexperience with hardware production.

I stood in line for a console at launch. Since then, I've had the lights show up on 3 consoles and am currently on my fourth. The problem is that Microsoft is replacing broken consoles with broken consoles. It ticks me off and am about to throw in the towel if my replacement crashes. Since I've gotten it back (about 3 days ago) I've already had it lock up on me once. And yes, it gets plenty of ventilation blah blah... and yes, I DO take care of it blah blah... I'm sick of hearing the tech support ask me the same stupid questions when they KNOW their product is defective. I have a PS3 and Wii that sit on the same shelf that work with no problems at all.

Nope, even though the lack of decent games is really frustrating, we do turn on our consoles - to play on-line. Plus, we can save some 50 bucks (euros, whatever) to buy an extra game when they begin to come out in autumn. Check the line-ups - the lack is temporary and I don't think the box had too many games to play at the beginning of it's life.

I know a lot of people with 360's and at least half of them have had theirs die. I am on my 2nd 360 now and have been experiencing the freeze up problems yet again. I fear for what the future holds. If this one dies, MS can take their crappy machine back and my $$, I'm done with them.

I have 21 friends with 360's in the DOminican Republic, all of them already experimented the red ring of death, some up to 3 times, I already had 2 dead X's. The sad news is that we can't send them for repair due to shipping costs and customs taxes, so we buy cores and sell the burned one for few bucks, for me the failure rate is 100%. The Xbox360 have design defects so sooner or later every 360 owner will wake up one day and see that their beloved machine is agonizing.

M$, the 360 is the Best gaming machine ever but i already invested in my 3rd. it is more that US$1,400.00 + shipping + customs taxes. So next time will be the PS3 (wich i dont like).

If the problem isn't as large as posted on this site it shouldn't be that hard for Microsoft too prove that the failure rate isn't as big as a problem. But if it's they should make further steps too insure the quality of the xbox 360's.

The stories of massive failures with the 360 is false. Every console has units that fail and until Microsoft and other major chains give actual data on this, anything else is speculation, and I'm not talking about something you heard about some gamestop employee saying about how many units were being returned or what not, more than likely he is a fanboy for the other camp. I've yet to see ONE reputable news channel with a story about a massive amount of failing 360s, and trust me, this is something that the media would pick up in a heartbeat. But this story is like the whole story of Vince Mcmahon being blown up in his car and no one except the WWE covered it.........meaning it was b.s. And that fact was certainly verified when Chris Benoit, a 2nd tier wrestler murdering his family was covered by every news outlet in the world. Now, why would the "real" news cover a 2nd tier wrestler killing his family while not covering the prez and ceo of the WWE being blown up in a car????? The reason is that they know facts from fiction in that aspect, much like the difference between b.s. stories like most 360s failing and Microsoft's story of a low failure rate. I've owned over 20 360s and not one, even my launch unit has failed. And before you ask why so many units, needing money is the main answer. So please.

Thats weird you owned over 20 360's. how could you possibly put enough play time on all 20 360's to count them as not failed, comparing them to people with 1 360 played alot that broke from use, people w/o the ability to choose between 20 360's? you can't compare. anyway out of my friends only 2 have 360; mine broke and 1 of my friends broke, the other friends is fine but he just got it in april. 2 that broke were launch. but forget about what my self and others say and pay attention to internet and print journalists reporting their own personal and office 360s dying in larger then usual amounts. how many did ign 360 offices have that red-ringed? you honestly do not hear thisabout any other system. If the rumor has any merit, it costs money for people to send in their broken xbox 360's for repair. Microsoft does not pay for the postage.

And Microsoft charges $140 after the warranty expires.

And, when the broken console is being repaired, you are still paying for Xbox Live... and you don't get to use the full service you pay for. That's also a ground for legal action and compensation.

There are numerous grounds for a Class Action lawsuit, and Microsoft will pay severely *if* Xbox 360 indeed has such a serious quality problem.

I remember a while back reading MS said any console made in 05 would be repaired free if it broke, whenever it broke. mine broke in may, and when i called they said they stopped repairing them for free in april. so they want me to pay, when all signs point to the failure being MS fault. theres so much ground for a lawsuit, but no ones standing on it yet.

If this rumor is false, then Microsoft should come out and pursue legal actions against people or, company, that tries to tarnish Microsoft's reputation.

Especially given that Sony is the one company that has a history of conducting *unethical* viral marketing. (Google "David Manning" if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about.) The current situation does remind me of that case that ultimately turned into a lawsuit, which Sony settled quitely.

If this is indeed another deceptive viral marketing campaign on Sony's part, then Microsoft will HAVE TO take actions. Microsoft's company reputation is at stake. This thing is already getting too serious. Microsoft has to deal with it sooner or later.

The issue of bashing 360 failures has become a popular fad that has been completely blown out of proportion. It has become fun to ridicule 360 red lights due to the desire for attention. The fact you hear about these problems alot is because their are 11 million or more 360's sold, and access to the internet of millions of people to thrive for attention.

When the ps2 had disc read errors and dvd infringement violations the law suits for the issues where limited to magazines (EGM, gameinformer, and gaypro...gamepro) and popular game websites like ignps2.com, gamespot, and official sony websites. Gaming has never received so much attention that it has in 06 and 07. People where actively ready to watch a war of 3 systems with a magnifying glass.

And, as people acknowledge ps3's lack of revolutionary graphics, and canceled or lost exclusive with the new format (blu-ray) sony promised people acknowledge the pretty red light of death on the 360 because the fact alone it has a vibrant indication of a fail and is mesmerizing to attention whining retards.

Seriously, whom would invest into 11 systems read between the lines people. It is a fad to complain about these issues and easy to blow out of proportion. I personally care not for sony game systems so all I see are it`s faults inversely a person whom cares not for micrsofts systems sees no good. An number of consoles sold and those returned. i tried to give you another one. this bubble system is weak. guess im biased because both my xboxb 1 and xbox360 have broken. same has happened to my friends, and all of our other systems work fine. xbox is my favorite system because of the games, but the console has the crappiest longevity ive seen. I've played videogames for 16 years. and dude, the article on the guy with 11 360's, he didnt buy it 11 times. most or all the 11 boxes were replacements, free or the $140 kind. he also offers proof, something the coperate bags. i also read article of a guy on his 7th or 8th box, and he had proof also. you'd be hardpressed to find a PS2 story of that many replacements.

There's no point in defending this very real problem, you'd just be lying to yourself. In fact, denying that the problem exists would be pretty moronic, think about it: You're really not going to upset a "PS3 Fanboy" by saying there is no problem. That person probably wouldn't buy a 360 even if there was nothing wrong with it so what are you trying to prove? All what would happen is that Microsoft will think their customers are happy and won't do anything in the long run, so if your Xbox360 gets it one day, you're screwed. That would make no sense to me.

Going by these 'popular' stories, one would think the PS3 has 0% defective rates.

I have 2 360's. One is a launch console, the other I got last X-mas. The only red lights I see are traffic lights and Sony Fa6boys on this site as their avatar.

because that will ultimately force Microsoft to take actions and look into the bottom of all this... which, if you really have faith in Xbox 360, will lead to legal action against its competitor.

And if this is indeed a vicious negative viral marketing effort, then when the truth comes out, it'll be the competitor that will pay the ultimate price in court. This kind of thing, if exposed, will crush and destroy a company that's already suffering financially.

So, as a 360 customer, you should be blasting Microsoft: "Why haven't you guys done ANYTHING about it? You should do something about it because it's getting out of control."

This article has some VERY good and valid points, including the common answer that why isn't there a Class action law suit, or why if there isn't a problem MS is increasing the warranty

The xbox 360 hardware is a piece of crap. We all know it. The console was rushed to beat the PS3 and Wii to market. We all know it.

Well I know My PS3 won't die anytime soon.... Cause I don't play it. My 360 went out once, I sent it in and got one back in a couple weeks. Since then I've had no problems what so ever. If it goes out again, I'll send it back again. It sucks, and I hear what everyone is screaming about, but 360 is too damn good to give up all together.
