Are All Xbox 360s Doomed To Fail? Student Survey Aims To Find Out

Reader Ben Strauss is doing a cool project for his marketing class - he's surveying Xbox owners to find out how many have had failed Xboxes and/or know someone who does. So far he's interviewed 200 people and is seeing a 71% failure rate, with 85% of respondents saying they know someone with a failed Xbox.

Well, like any homegrown survey, it's bound to have a decent margin or error, especially when it relies on people taking the initiative to report one way or another. People who have experienced it are a lot more likely to respond than those who've never had to deal with it.

Either way, the failure rate is far too high. Luckily though... mine is still going strong two years later.

But they probably were early adopters of the system. The rate for the current ones probably isn't as high. The ps3 60Gb failure rate is very high as well though not near the 360, and accounts for most of that 10% people were seeing(since people who were online to vote probably would have been into gaming enough to get a ps3 early). I would like to see ms official numbers but the rate isn't good enough to release.

I'm sure it's bad but not this bad. I don't understand why they don't redesign the 360 like the PS3. It's bound to fix the failure rate.

But that would still leave however many millions the 360 has sold with a high failure rate. I doubt this could ever really truly be solved.

edit: For the record, my 360 has never RRODed. The disk drive broke though. And that wasn't covered in their warranty so yay for me.

If I say mine has failed it is considered a 100% failure rate for me? Being that I have 2 then it drops to only a 50% because only 1 of two failed. But then again I technically have had a total of 3. 1 failed and 1 replaced and 1 not failed. So that make me a 33.3333...% failure.

I dont know about these surveys. As with almost anything they can be manipulated for or against the subject at hand.

Of 7 people i know personally that have have x360. All have x360 died on them once. Even an elite. I am sure you guys won't believe me but this is the honest truth where i am and why i will never buy a x360 unless the PROD is fixed.

Out of my roommates and I, all three of us have had at least one 360 fail. One of us has had three failures (one within the warranty, launch console). Personally, I've had my PS3 fail on my once as well (stopped reading discs within the warranty period).

This is unacceptable, but the games are too good for me to stop playing..

MS just sucks w/ electronics. Its the same way w/ my zune. It cracks me up when people act as if there are only a certain number of 360's that share this flaw - the WHOLE design is flawed; all 360s will burn out eventually due to extended use.

Sure, there are those of us that have been lucky, and there are those of us who don't know how to take care of a console(to which it would have burnt out anyways) but fact of the matter is the 360 is prone to hardware failure through overheating.

The sad part is how easy it is to fix, just put a toothpick in the fans, overheat it for 15 min, and let it cool down for 15min. 70% of the time this will fix the box. Its the same thing you would do for a PC or even a PS3 if it were to burn out, basically resolder the connection.

Can we not test the hard-ware and issue a report which confirms the actual failure rate of the Xbox 360 system instead of asking untrustworthy people ‘claiming’ to be Xbox 360 owners? Last year’s fail rate for the Xbox 360 was about 16% and I'm confident that it's failure rate is below 10% in 2009.

I have had one Xbox 360 for two years in my life-time and it has broken only once. You have to remember to take care of your system. Such as keeping it off the carpet, allowing plenty of air flow, cleaning it regularly, giving the system breaks and remembering to turn it upside down. If you are one of these lucky people who have the newer Xbox 360 models, particularly the new 60GB model introduced in July of 2008, then you will have a less likely chance to get red ring of death due to the system having better cooling systems than the previous models.

I can't think of more than 3 out of about 50 of my best XBL friends who haven't have RROD at one time or another. Someone is always getting it. I have 2 friends who are in the middle of sending there consoles into MS right now.

These are guys who play their 360's on a daily basis, so the extensive usage may have something to do with it. I don't know how many "casual" users are affected.

Because 10% is still somewhat acceptable, even if there is question to that number. It's not GOOD, but much better than could be expected.

54% percent, though, is unheard of for a major electronic product, and that's before it was released. It may be more now (or even then). I think that's why you hear more about the 54% of 360 failing: it's a lot more damning than 10% will be. I'm sure if it was just 10% of 360s, it wouldn't be as alarming and it would be ignored, too. And if it were the PS3s that had such a high rate of failure, it would be called out just as much.

E08: General I/O Malfunction, could be caused by an error with any of the I/O devies such as A/V port, USB, Hard drive, DVD drive, etc. over torquing of the AV or heatsync bolts can cause this error.also means the motherboard is bending which results in the GPU getting 'disconnected'.

Not in regards to his asking those sampled if they know someone who owns a 360 that has failed since he's clumping them separate of the actual persons who have had one fail. But, the method in capturing the data is reflective of capturing only a small group of the type of users which isn't reflective of the average user or environment.

This is the same issue with Game Informer's survey. People who follow and subscribe to a gaming magazine are not reflective of the actual average user or their experience with a specific console. Makes about as much sense as polling World of Warcraft players on whether they like fantasy or sci-fi settings. It's unlikely that the majority will vote for the sci-fi setting option.

I think that all depends on what you consider "official".

I personally am sick of the 360 RROD "statistics" being hyped up by every news media outlet. Do I believe they're as high as 50%? No, I don't.

This is because one is more likely to tell others about their "bad" experience with a product they bought; and not likely to say anything at all if it works fine. Bad news travels a lot faster, and news outlets who are looking to capitalize on a bomb shell like RROD will probably post what it takes to get more traffic.

And if that means blowing a story full of hot air, then so be it.

If you read the article he is a person that is on his 4th Xbox 360. It seems that he is trying...in his own way...to get some solid numbers about what is really going on with the 360 failure rates. Scientifically, this would be a cohort study (group of people who share a common characteristic or experience within a defined period) with cross-sectional data (which is all collected at one time and is independent of when the issue happens.)There are inherent issues with any study of this kind such as selection bias and of course experimental manipulation. However, the advantage is that it is easy for small scale studies (relatively cost free, only requires the leg work). The data gained from this will be a valid INDICATOR of a statistical trend. It CAN'T prove his thesis...as that is not what these studies are meant for.
One thing that it CAN say...MS have been relatively un-phased by this issue...at least from a marketing perspective. He probably should link that with his revealed data to make a more interesting proposition of explaining the marketing factors or tactics that are used to maintain a steady rate of sales while facing this kind of issue. All in all...he won't get an F because he's a fanboy...as if the professor really cares...it is a CURRENT issue that gets him excited enough to actually DO THE LEG WORK that it takes. I wish him luck...with his 360 issue and his project.

Hi guys, I'm the one that the article is referring too. Really want to thank Consumerist for allowing the post to happen.

Basically, I own both consoles, I own my own gaming team, and I love gaming for what it is. I could really not care less about individual branding, but when it comes to customer service, Microsoft has been deplorable.

Sorry but do you people genuinely believe, that the total, world-wide fail rate for the Xbox 360 is 54.2%

Neither my PS3 (had since launch day) nor my Xbox 360 elite (had since may 2008) have failed me yet.

And I play my 360 every day, that's well over a year :) never had a problem.

I look at that, well over half, and think about the 360 I have had for over a year and realize the number means nothing.

My PS3 could very well brick tomorrow, But my 360 live on for years.

That's all I'm trying to say, just dont want people to be as naive to look at a number like 54.2%, and genuinely believe they have a 50/50 chance of there console breaking.

The failure rate will keep rising unless M$ makes the right choice in redesign their Xbox 360. I have my ps3 original 60GB and it's 2 years old now going on 3 years in Dec. All M$ do is buying more and more exclusive. Didn't see Sony buying that many exclusive on the PS2. So more Xbox 360 will continue to break and fail until M$ CHANGE THEIR HARD WARE.

I honestly find these percentages hard to believe... In my experience , ive only had one friend whos xbox has rrod'! I know probs 25 or so people who have 360s so one out of 25 is pretty good! Maybe canadian xboxes are made with some super secret manufacturing process to make it withstand the xtream weather variatuions... but honestly 16% or less is believeable to me... (plz excuse my typing, as i am slightly wasted right now! ) good night to all :D

"Reader Ben Strauss" stop crying over xbox 360 failure rate, out of all the important things that students could be trying to fix or change to help people take care of families, people are being put on the streets because jobs are moving or have moved out of the country for cheaper labor and selling back to us at very high markup prices and we like fools have jumped into their trap and now we have over priced PS3s, big screen tvs, surround sound and the like and no jobs, no food, no place to live,who cares about the failure rate, if you bought 4 consoles and they all failed then do not buy more or crying about it you made that choice no one held you up and made you make that choice, warranty is warranty read the fine print its there for a reason MS extended the warranty but only to a point which may help some but of course not all, if your are not satisfied with a product you do not keep going back buying the samething over and over and then blame the manufacture because of your bad choice to keep purchasing that product. This RROD thing is getting old, stop beating this thing into stupid mine is bigger then yours contests and if PS3 and Ntendos fail rate looks better then invest in one or both of them but if you want to be on the xbox 360 ride then stop crying when it fails and cost you to get repaired.I have a Sony 200 disc player that crapped out right at the end of the warranty and a 52" Sony Bravia4 that failed after 1 week does that count? Electronics fail some sooner than others some from bad design some just fail we live in a electronic component age get used to Electronic Failure its going to happen.

I think it's safe to say that ANY system with moving parts is destined to fail at some point. Some just do it faster then others given various factors (Manufacturing, Human factor etc).

So here's to hoping next gen we see solid state storage mediums (SSD's, SDXC, MSDXC etc) take a foot hold, prices are coming down so by then it should be feasible.
