Star Ocean: The Last Hope Will Stay on the 360

The Star Ocean games have traditionally found a home on Sony's various consoles, including the upcoming Star Ocean: Second Evolution for the PSP. However, in a recent Q & A the IGN Xbox Team held with the Star Ocean development team, it was confirmed that Star Ocean: The Last Hope will not be heading to the PS3.

In the interview, the team is explicitly asked if there is "any chance of seeing Star Ocean 4 made for the PlayStation 3." Their answer: "there are currently no plans for a PlayStation 3 version." So Last Hope will be staying on the 360 for the time being, though you never know if plans will change down the line.

They're just saying that to get as many sales for the 360 version, so that people see a need to buy a 360. The Ps3 version will be released later.

Edit: I saw so many negative comments I had to point something out... If MS wasn't in the games industry, most of their games (or games only on 360 and PC smart @ss) would be games only on Ps3! The worst part is... The fanboys would love them and claim they were the greatest thing in the world! But because they are on a console they don't like (HATE), they view the games as garbage.

Sqeenix stated earlier they wanted to expand in the west, with the crap they have released so far and the dire sales figures in both Japan and the western world I can sure you these games will come out on the PS3. Yes they did score well but they didn't sell well. Blue Dragon for instance has sold less than WKC and that has been out two weeks.

It is sad the SE have to use MS money as a buffer for poor sales but I am surprised they didn't release it on the PS3 in Japan even to make a natural profit not free money profit.

Namco Bandai also insisted that there were "no plans" for a PS3 version of Eternal Sonata. Well now, here I am playing it on my PS3 and loving every minute of it. Star Ocean 4 will almost certainly see a PS3 release sometime down the road as other "360 exclusive" RPGs did. I'm looking at you Enchanted Arms.

That's because "no plans" can mean two things:
1. They actually have no plans.
2. They have plans but can't say it, due to a (timed exclusive) contract.

The lack of an exclusive sticker on the box is a pretty good indicator of what it means this time. He even says "...though you never know if plans will change down the line." as if we should expect a "change" in plans :)

That's exactly it, "you never know if plans will change down the line". Considering that SO4 is a Japanese RPG, it's kind if suicidal to release a game like it only on the 360 which has less than 50% of the HD console sales in Japan. The PS3 is well over 2 million and the 360 is something like 800,000. The Japanese HD fanbase obviously favour the PS3 over the 360 even though the 360 has the JRPG edge. That said, S-E seems to favour the 360 in terms of western sales, but considering the bulk of their sales in JRPG games comes from Japan, it's not exactly logical to keep a JRPG like SO4, where the core fanbase is Japanese, exclusive to the 360. They made FFXIII available on the 360 in the western territories so a release of SO4 on the PS3 isn't so unthinkable.

The PS3 sells about 3 times the amount of consoles as the 360 based simply on adoption rate. JRPG developers would be committing suicide to deny a PS3 version of their games.

FFXIII on the 360 is only in US, not becuase Sony paid for it, but becuase there was a contractual agreements. No doubt there were loopholes, but I think Versus is reasonably safe. And if not it will be exclsuive in japan, where it matters.

If you think about this logically, it really doesn't make sense.

Japan is the main market for this genre/game, and that is also the place where PS3 is the dominant console. Even if every single Xbox owner in Japan buys it, that's still only 800K copies.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Square said that it's a good thing Final Fantasy 13 is going mulitplat, because people who only own a 360 won't have to go out and buy a PS3 just to play the game.

So why is that gamers have to go out and buy a Xbox 360 if they don't have one to play Star Ocean. I for one don't mind games going multiplat, but when you state something like they said above they should apply it to every game and not just one.

It's clear Microsoft has been throwing money in Square's direction, or else this wouldn't be happening. Even after a slew of exclusives JRPS's being released in Japan for the Xbox 360 it's has not managed to make a scratch in the territory. Yet Square keeps on throwing RPG's there way. Come on people Square's not sitting there saying "Wow that 360 sure is bring in a lot of profit for us let's make more exclusives for it."

I have no clue what Square is thinking. It's obvious that after your first couple of games tanking that the 360 is not where your audience is, so either make the games multiplat with the PS3 or make them exclusively for the Wii since most of Japan owns a Wii already. It's clear what Microsoft is trying to do. Yes they want to make an impact in Japan, but if the can't they don't want the PS3 to be able to do it either which is why their buying up as many JRPG's as they can.

Yes FF13vs may end up on the 360 but then again people forget that Sony owns about 8.5% of SE which means Sony owns the 3rd biggest share. Which means, while a minority stake in the company still means some influence. I'm sure you'll see an exclusive or 2 for the PS3 at some point at the very least. Besides Sony is pocketing some money off those SE RPGs anyways. At the very least Sony is tied to SE to ensure SE doesn't go 360 exclusive for all games.

There is no reason to make Star Ocean 4 exclusive when they already built a fanbase on Playstation consoles. What's the point of even releasing the first two Star Ocean games on the PSP? Another great game for the jrpg crowd. So far the 360 has been releasing stellar jrpg's according to Famitsu. It's unfortunate that the Japanese aren't to keen on picking up an American console and prefer to stick with their own considering the 360 has better jrpgs. White Knight Chronicles is having great sales but got a low review by Famitsu (29/40). It's a shame really. Famitsu rated every jrpg 360 game higher than that.

I've got plenty to look for here, since Star Ocean is a favorite series of mine.

His theory just made no sense, since many reviewers overseas in the US completely disagrees with Famitsu's reviews. That includes games like Last Remnant, and even Haze.

You can't use Famitsu to back up your statements. The Japanese gamers know what they want. Star Ocean should be the best selling 360 game yet. Last Remnant sold poorly because it was mediocre.

They are the ones that count because they have pretty much reviewed all of them. Just like Haze should be reviewed by IGN or Gamepro since it's a western game and not a Japanese game.

I said it once and I'll say it again, all three previous Star Oceans were bad. The only good game developer tri-Ace ever made was Valkyrie Profile.
With that being said, there has to be a reason why Sqeenix are still employing these guys, and I'm hoping they redeem themselves with Star Ocean 4. I'll rent SO4 and take it from there, until then, please guys - stop fighting over who gets the game or not. It's sickening.

Just because Squeenix said FF13 was coming to the 360 doesn't mean it will come. They haven't even started working on the game, how do they know they can do it without it being too inferior compared to the ps3 version. Seriously, they are gonna need at least 5 disk or more. I really dont see it happening. I dont wish any bad on 360 only owners, but technically it going to be really hard to do without compromising quality. Its not going to run half as good as the ps3 version. I'll put money on that.

I think Microsoft paid for timed exclusivity to build up a bigger install base in Japan. It's a smart move. And as far as JRPG's go, all the JRPG's that have come out for the XBox 360 have been average or bad. Valkyria Chronicles have a better score than all the JRPG's that came out on the 360. I am an RPG fan I have over 50 of them in my collection currently and I have to say I played some god awful ones and gems. Star Ocean 3 was the worst one in my collection and I am currently playing the PSP version of the first and second one Arc the lad TOTS was just as bad.

I still have hope in this version even though I can't play it for principle reasons but it saddens me they SE have ignored PS3 fans but this is the last title we know of that has 360 exclusivity. SE say it is only 360 because the dev kits were out first. Maybe the last Hope has a real meaning. Lets hope they know how to programme the UE3 engine this time round. It is peculiar that some developers can't even get the UE3 engine to work properly but epic can. It is like the cell on the PS3 only Sony can programme it properly and epic can only programme the UE3 properly.

We will see what other games from now on will be 360 exclusive or not and see if SE still has double standards.

So 360 jrpg fans the few of them there are enjoy this game. As for me I will continued my wait until rpgs come to the PS3 but I have a huge back catalog and dragon quests and Suikoden on portable machines.

I enjoyed the xbox and the xbox 360, those are the facts I stated, just go to gamerankings.com and you will see that all the JRPG's that have come to the Xbox 360 are under 80% accepts for Tales which had a 83% average. Valkyria Chronicles 86%. These are facts, there has not been a AAA JRPG game on the Xbox 360. A fanboy will say stupid stuff like the XBox 360 or PS3 sucks, PS3 has no games, etc. When some one states something about a system that is not true, because they are clueless and do not own the system. I'm not too worried, I have Star Ocean 3 for the PS2 and the story really sucks, it had me going until the stupid surprise ending, and the battles were not that fun after awhile, couple of things they did in their that were tremendous are the graphics, music, and unlimited amounts replay value, if you have bought the strategy guide you would know what I am talking about

All in all part 4 might be a descent game, and its great the 360 keeps getting rpgs as its becoming a much more all-around system compared to the Xbox, I hope this game doesn't turn out like part 3 as that had so much potential so 360 fans can enjoy a good rpg

1. 360 fanboys want to find anything they can to rub into the PS3 fanboys' faces. This includes things they assume mean one thing and spin things after they have already been spun. It's a wonder why THEY care so much that they are feeling the need to use this as a weapon, and what crime would it be for them IF the PS3 gets this game (which just about EVERYONE knows it will and Tri-Ace is talking through an NDA filter (more like talking out of their ASSES, but oh well)). They behaved like this about the PS3 getting GTA4 DLC stuff (they thought the world was going to end if the PS3 would get something extra for GTA4, let alone episodic content). Oh, and this is ALL WHILE everyone that disagrees with them gets called a rabid PS3 fanboy (I've been called that countless times. I wish they would stop and just LOOK at my f@cking bio already! The issue is that SE is telling everyone "oh, we want to be multiplatform" and then, so far, completely ignore that the PS3 EXISTS, and say all these good things about how much they want to help the 360 while making one of the few things they have that could help the PS3 become multiplatform, and now we have this thing where, again, Tri-Ace, SE, whoever, is trying to have their cake and eat it too. That's WHY people are upset. Yet, the media couldn't care any less that they are being two-faced towards PS3 owners, and the 360 fanboys encourage, condone, and hope for more of it. This is ridiculous that SE continues this practice and people that NEED to check them seem to not give a sh!t!

I will say when it comes to the installed base in Japan, this is a bad idea for square. PS3's installed base in japan is way greater than xbox's but maybe this will push another 50'000 or so 360's there. As far in the U.S, i beilieve alot of people who like jrpgs bought a ps3 expecting ps3 to be the juggernaut in this category, but that certainly didn't turn out as expected. I was one of the lucky ones who ended up with a 360 this generation and i must say im loving every minute of it. I can't wait for star ocean 4. The last few jrpgs have been really mediocre (LR, IU).
