Gamespot: Gears of War 2 Review

Gears of War 2 has a lot in common with its predecessor, but the new environments, darker storyline, and epic scale certainly have a lot to offer fans. The new weapons, melee attacks, and co-op options make for a campaign that you'll want to complete a number of times, and the new multiplayer modes give the game variety and longevity. Simply put, Gears of War 2 is a superior shooter that no action fan will want to miss out on.

For the most part they have started to give very fair reviews , so I wouldn't label them biased 360 reviewers ne more , in 2007 they were though can't argue that.

I think you should actually read the rating system description for giant bomb as 5 stars does not mean it is a perfect game.

They've gone away from numbers and just use stars to show how much they would recommend the game. 5 stars just means that it is a must play, read the written review if you want to know more.

The reason that Gears of War 2 has scored lower on some sites than the original is not because it's worse, and anyone who thinks that is very ignorant.

Gears of War 2 will be scored lower by some sites because it lacks the WOW factor of the first game. People had never seen visuals like that before, or gameplay that flowing and effective. While Gears of War 2 is undoubtedly an improvement, some reviewers believe it's just more of the same.

There are other sites though, such as Eurogamer, that realise the vast improvement this game has made. It all depends on the reviewer's stance basically.

Saying all this, Gears of War 2 still knocks the competition out of the park. People can deny that, but Gears of War 2 is on a whole other level compared to Resistance 2 and co.

So... low scores to ps3 games (in line with basically every other game-site out there) = Gamespot sucks. High scores = Gamespot is getting their sh!t together. These aren't the only ones, and it's not just ps3 bias, they write stupid reviews for lots of games. I'm sorry, but you can't have 3 good reviews and one bad one and expect people to be okay with that. The site is not credible, because they are far too likely to screw up a review, making their opinion worthless, being as it's so inconsistent. (Wipeout HD is another current one, although they seem to like it, and then give it a low score)

IGN is the only major site I know of that is consistent with my opinion of games, and it is why I consider them to be the best source for reviews of games I haven't played.

Well, for me that's not bias, because while all of those games are great, I can understand if someone were to give them that score. Ratchet is a bit harsh, I thought it was a great game. But both Uncharted and LBP score can be justified, personally I'd give Uncharted 9.2 or something and I'd give LBP a 5 because I don't even consider it a proper game. Remember, opinion.

It isn't worse, it's just now in 2008 it's comparable to other games that have been released. Remember when GeOW was released in 2006 it was a stand out which really differentiated itself from the then current-gen PS2 & XBOX era.
Anyway it seems like an amazing game regardless, a must buy for any X360 owners.

when halo 2 came out it was much much better than halo 1. Graphics had improved, online was more intense and the story was a continuation of the first while offering some new twists. It scored better than its predicessor and rightfully so.

Resistance 2 is going to be put into that same situation. It is much better than the first and you can see that right from the start. The improvements made are apparent with the online and graphical enhancements overs its predicessor.

Now gears 2 is improved over gears 1 but the improvements may not be as noticable as the other two games. That just shows the level of complexity put on by the first was a top notch product. Some of the changes made to the second are the addition of the 5 player co-op as well as subtle enhancements graphically while extending the story into the next chapter. It is obvious that with the strengths of each of these games can be found in their climactic final chapters.

There is no doubt that there will be a gears 3 and most probably a resistance 3. How those games play out all depend on how much is revealed in the second outing for both. As with big movies, you dont want to wow the crowd the first time out but you want to draw them in to what could potentially be a great series. Gears 1 did such a good job the first time that it almost didnt leave anything to be improved upon (except story). Halo 1 and resistance 1 did just right with the way the content was provided. Leaving room for improvement that would be much more noticable.

Bottom line. Gears 2 may not have the obvious changes to differentiate it from its prequel but what it does offer is worth the addition to the series. Can't wait for part 3.

Gears looks to me as it certainly deserve its scores of low 9's, for the quality and fun of the game.

But I just dont get how they can overlook the huge steps forwards Resistance has taken in every department. Reviewers even claimed Motorstorm was not a big enough leap forward over the original, despite all the improvments, yet they refuse to tar Gears with the same brush.

Is it a bad game, NO and I'm not saying that. Is it a really safe sequel without really pushing to do anything new? Yes, most definately. Again, not a bad thing, but when a game like R2 makes so much effort in every department, how can you ignore than. Especially when so many of the things haven't been done before like 8 player co-op or 30 on 30 matches. Just from a technical standpoint its hugely ambitious and they could have easily overpromised and fallen flat on their faces, but didn't.

I'm not knocking Gears, it just seems like good scores just get handed out to some games that are just destined to be hits while others are scrutinised with a microscope, just looking for anything it can be maked down for.

I mean , list the features on paper and there's no comparison, seriously Resistance is in a league of its own but the scores will end up very similar. Which is fine I suppose because both are great, but its failing to acknoledge who really made the extra effort and who just coasted by and did the same thing a little better.

I played the beta and I can't recall experiencing Lag or Framerate probs...

as for the graphics Gears 2 graphics doesn't blow RFOM2 out the water do you see how large the environments in RFOM2 are ?? do yuo see how many things are going on the screen at once...just go look at the Golden Gate Brige scene or the 150ft Monster and look at the graphical quality in those scenes it's simply amazing..!!

I'm more impressed by a 300ft monster smashing buildings or giant stalking crab tanks that you literally have to look straight up in the sky to see. Nothing in Gears compares to this scale, or the amount of features and modes this game has. Please. And apparently you all love texture pop in which I dont think I've played an Unreal game on XBox that didn't have it.

I could get it and get Motorstorm later but I think that game will break up the shooters a bit, so Gears is probably a December purchase for me. Plenty to do before and during Christmas holidays. As Motorhead would say "Its time to play the game." Wise words indeed.

Besides when will people learn the most important opinion to you should be your own. I keep bringing up Tenchu as an example. Yes and the statment about the Unreal engine. i have seen alot of unreal games that have used it and frankly is just depends on how the the developer plays with the lighting but the new UE3.5 is much better... if u read the interview... gears graphically does not potray reality but its an art style its the way the developers want u to see their dream... GAME DESIGN IS AN ART..simply put and the epic team have their way of doing their games, the same engine was used for Bourne conspiracy it looks diffrent, also in Vagas2 its look diffrent those games are going for another art style leaning toward what is reality but gears is not so.. so make sure u analyze stuff before coming into an argument...

I'm guessing that Gamespot might have scored Gears 2 lower than Gears 1 because at the time whenever Gears 1 first came out, it was something much different than anything else out on the 360 and it had more of a "Wow" factor and it had a TON of hype, but since then there's been many other shooters.

I'm thinking that maybe if Gears 2 had a MUCH more compelling/deeper storyline (Metal Gear Solid 4 caliber storyline) and/or had 4 Player Co-op that Gamespot might have given Gears 2 a 9.5, but I don't see why it should be scored lower than the first.

Something interesting i think and maybe also true of some folk here? , my brother is in the army and most certainly not a games player in the sense he doesn't enjoy game playing at all - he gave up that many years ago and now at the age of 38

When Xbox1 released with Halo however he very soon became quite interested eventually to the point of owning his very own machine for Halo1 and now a 360 for Gears and Halo3.Yes these are games he's playing but only ever these two does he play

Makes a packet and can have whatever he wants so i showed him a ton of footage of Resistance just to see what his opinion might be of it."not exactly Halo is it, definitely not Gears either" he replied

Now that may mean sh!t to some of you devoted R2 fans but the point i have made is that R2 is in a lesser league to many because it's hard to care about any of it.Gears and Halo have a Star Wars type following that Resistance can't ever hope to match.Probably the same too for Killzone2 because the whole thing is very much teen wrapped - Gears and Halo appeal to teens no doubt but they are also further reaching

I can accept that Gears is really quite cheesy but there has always been a very serious undertone that makes it all work as a result - R2 can't ever hope to match these two in this regard and that's just a fact

The wonderful thing about different games and systems is that there is something for everyone. My son is in the army and he would rather play LBP than Gears. I personally don't like GTA or Gran Turismo. My brother will spend months on GT. Same gene pool, different tastes. Gears 2 is a great game... Resistance 2 is a great game. Why does everyone have a problem with that? If you really can't enjoy a game without putting down someone else's preference, maybe you should find a different hobby.
Personally as a PS3 only owner, I am going to pass on Resistance 2 and pick up Valkyria Chronicles. I played the beta for R2 and thought the co-op was a blast but I am just in the mood for something other than a FPS right now. Are you going to tell me how much better Gears is than Valkyria Chronicles?

Some people like mister #4 doesn't want variety to flourish, you have 3 consoles out for a reason and not just one, @ #4 you make your argument seem like a fact when it is not, what is this "special" it factor you are talking about, Resistance 2 has very much that factor with providing a multiplayer experience never before done on a console

And I care a lot for it, I want to know what happens to Nathan Hale and the story of where the Chimerians came from, "IMO" Resistance has a more fleshed out story then Gears of War 2, oh and I'm 27

My point raised is just about Resistance in comparison to what it's up against, and that is a franchise it can't hope to compete with - somehow MS has found another with Gears and frankly i would have never predicted this

For me Resistance2 is throw away though based purely on how insignificant the whole thing feels - probably good fun on a gameplay level mind

its worser than the first just remember (god of war 1= 9.3 vs god of war 2= 9.2 ) in god of war 2 they improved the graphics,enhanced the gameplay ,more bosses,more variety ala gears of war 2.
god of war 2 is far better than the first ,also gears of war 2 is far more better than the first,but they have one more thing in common cliff hanger ending.
trust me gears of war 2 is better than the original,i finished it and still playing it and the graphics is stunning i wonder how ign(i know this is gamespot review) give the graphics only 9.5 are they joking its 10 out 10,even mgs4 with all the installs have framerate issues and since you can download the game on your hard disk when nxe arrive in 19 nov all technical problems will be resolved.

Look, I have both the PS3 and The 360, I even have a PS2 and PS1. For 90 % of the games across the platforms the 360 looks better than the PS3. Also lot of the big first party games on the 360 Look better than their PS3 competitors. Yes The PS3 has the Cell processor, but when it comes to actual (not theoretical) gaming processing power they actually are pretty much equal in that regard. The PS3 has an advantage of a hard drive in every PS3 and the blue ray player, so load times are less and there is no shortage of space on the discs. The 360 has an advantage in the graphics area, the graphic accelerator in the 360 can render twice as many raw polygons at its peak than the PS3 can and the 360's memory bandwidth and ability to handle textures is much greater than that of the graphics card in the PS3. What This Means is the 360's graphics card can handle higher resolution and more detailed textures and lighting than the PS3's graphics card, it also allows the 360 to render games at higher resolutions a lot more efficiently than the PS3. Another advantage of the 360 in the graphics department is the system has more memory (10 megabytes more; 360 has 522 megabytes and the PS3 512 megabytes) and more of that memory is available to its graphics Card. Look, The graphics Card is what really determines the level of graphical detail, not the system Processor (Thats Why its called a GRAPHICS card!!). Another big advantage to the 360 is it is easier to develop on, which gives developers more time to make the game look and play better. For those few cross platform games (roughly 10%) that looked slightly better on the PS3, the developers usually had more time to develop on the PS3, for example oblivion where they had a whole extra year to develop and refine the PS3 version. Even some games that were released a year later on the PS3 still look better on the 360, for example Fight Night 3. When it comes right down to it, what really makes a game look good is time, Lots of money, and the developers. Both systems are great, both systems have great games and they both have their advantages. If you want to go for graphics more than anything get a PC. Oh Yeah one more thing, Do your homework before you try to attack my comment:)

Amazon.com shipped it already from dallas, Can't wait...My new xbox 360 came with a bad PSU and M$ said I had to ship it to them and it will take 4 weeks to get a replacement, can you beleave that sh1t? Lucky for me I have my old one a 203w PSU and it works just find even though the new one is 175w..Gears2 looks incredible and only reason I would buy a 360 which after that sh!t i'm having second thoughts ..good luck to all 360 owner, we all know we needed when we play games

I know this thread isn't regarding the 1up review, but has anybody else noticed that 1up gave Gears 2 an A/A+, yet metacritic have scored the 1up review as 100? Surely it should be 95? I am a big fan of Gears, but that score didn't sit well with me. Is it a genuine mistake, or is it me reading it wrong?

I dunno and really don't care, but I will say, MGS 4 has 0 chance at GOTY imo, I know there are disagrees coming my way, but MGS 4 is more of an interactive movie than anything, and if that wins GOTY then I dunno what to say seeing how it would mean interactive movie >>>> Games.

So while I have nothing but good things to say about MGS 4 and being someone who loves the story cut-scenes and wish Kojima would just go ahead and make a damn MGS CG movie, I don't count MGS as full games for some reason, when you spend more time watching than playing then there is something wrong.

Gears 2 for GOTY? I really don't know yet, but I doubt it for some reason, I have this feeling that LBP will get it, just a gut feeling I have, either LBP or ...... hmmm..... well something else.

Great review. I'm still puzzled, though, about the lack of comment about the bland storyline or the (supposed) glitches. Several reviewers have said that the storyline was lame, and yet they gave the game a free pass. Take ANY other game and you're sure to see a game get bashed if the storyline isn't up to par. I think 1up even went so far as to say "Uh...the storyline OBVIOUSLY isn't meant to be taken seriously. Uh...so we're not going to mark it down for that." Really? REALLY?

How lame. Yes, the game has gotten great scores, and I have no doubt that even the biggest fanboy would have to give the game a minimum 8/10 score. At the same time, I can't help but feel that the issues in Gears 2 (marginal improvements in graphics and gameplay, glitches, lame storyline) would have knocked any other game to an 8.5/10 or even lower.

What happened. I was expecting it to be over-scored even more than a 9.0. M$ please send bigger pay checks for Halo Wars and Gears 3. You've just cause a bunch of Gears fanboys to hit the meds again.
