Too Human is not a good role-playing game. The five available character classes (Berserker, Defender, Champion, Commando, and Bioengineer) initially offer some strategic gameplay differences because of their proficiency in certain skills -- the Berserker is better with melee weapons, while the Bioengineer has regenerative health. But beyond the first level, these differences become less substantial. Methods for defeating enemies are largely the same for all classes because almost every single enemy attacks with the same rushing-horde mentality.

The game is simply schizophrenic; it attempts to be all things to all people and never succeeds in executing any of them well.

Dude, ppl STILL talk about the flopage that is Haze & Lair!!! Every console has bad games to go with the good ones... The hype for Haze was no where near as big as the fanboy hype around this game though. It has been one of the games to justify the 360's lineup in 08... that's why it burns so bad. If Fable 2 is good though, it'll probably be quickly forgotten. Both Haze & Lair were followed by some pretty GREAT games on the PS3. That's what the 360 needs right now b/c the game lineup this year has looked pretty weak so far.

And as far as complaining about the reviewer being a PS3 fan...weak. It isn't the reviewer, it is the game, okay? I guess the reviewer at Game Informer was a PS3 fanatic too? Do you realize by the end of the week how many Too Human reviewers and their respective editors you will have to accuse of being PS3 fanboys?

Just so you are aware, all reviews have to get approved by the Editor in Chief. This isn't a one man show. Maybe I should not have said that because now will come a plethora of ridiculous comments that 1up is a Sony site when even Mongols that live in the far corners of the Gobi Desert know that 1up/EGM have been hounding Sony for quite some time. When you get a magazine cover with a tomato slammed against a 360 then you can start to think the staff doesn't like your console.

Until then you are going to have to accept the fact that Too Human isn't a great game. When trying to fathom why you can begin with the fact that the head of the Development Studio is an arrogant ass that believes nothing he does is wrong. It is difficult at best to fix your errors when you believe you have none.

Nice try. OPM has been gone for almost two years and he has only recently come back to 1up. And so he likes the PS3, that doesn't mean that as a professional journalist he can be objective when reviewing a 360 game. That's why they are called professionals and they work for legitimate companies instead of fanboys posting on a forum.

the GI review I just read are hilarious since I was accused of not liking this game due to the fact that it was on the 360. I played the demo on my 360 and I couldn't stand the game (especially the targeting), but there will always be those that love it. Too Human = Microsoft's Haze. lmfao.

I never really payed attention to the PS stories until recently, since prior to a few weeks ago, I didn't own a PS3. I think what's interesting is that there are two reviews here, a primary one and a second opinion. And, as many have said here -- me, juuken, others -- Too Human is going to be a love it or hate it game. Even the 1up reviewers have split opinions on it.

Again, for the record, try the demo. If you liked the demo, you'll like the game. If you didn't like the demo, no review score will change your opinion of the full game.

I think the PS3 and 360 are about equal in flops, the PS3 had Lair and Haze(which have some really strong fans who really enjoy them, which is cool) and the 360 had Two Worlds(same as Lair and Haze) and Too Human(we don't quite know yet) So take it to the open zone buddy.

EDIT: @ Action Bastard, Kameo and Viva Pinata were recieved pretty well though, so they can't really be considered flops. I personally thought they were quite good, but I'm not everyone I suppose.

EDIT2: Agreed, Okami is within my top 5 games of all time, easily. It's unfortunate that Clover has closed down...

Heavenly Sword is NOT a flop, it's gotten an 81% on Gamerankings and 79 on Metacritic, which is around what Ninja Gaiden 2 got, and I don't see anyone running around touting that as a flop, not to mention Heavenly Sword wasn't accused of unintuitive controls and bad level design. As for Resistance 2, if it is half as good as the first it will most certainly not be a flop. And as for Too Human not being hyped as a AAA title, just ask everyone who was saying "Too Human is amazing, anyone who doesn't like it and says it sucks is just an ignorant fanboy" and tripe like that(I seem to remember you being one of those people, POG), which is about the same kind of hype that Haze got(not to mention Haze scored better than Too Human).

EDIT: Funny, GT5:P(a minigame/demo as you called it) has sold around 2 million copies and has been out for only a few months, and recieved quite well as a matter of fact. Hardly a flop I would say. In fact, I'm done arguing with you, I'm going to go play some GT5:P right now, Peace.

you have to take folklore (good game) and the 2 super niche games off your list. Eye of judgement is super super niche and so is time crisis. You had the cheek to add a PSN game (clutch much). Dont let me start with the crappy xbl games my friend. The rest were flops in the grand scheme of things but so were ico and okami and WE KNOW what time it is when it comes to those games.

Every system will have its flops. This one is a little more high profile because MS had no exclusives between the last 1 and gears 2 and people were questioning MS's 08 lineup at the start of the year. Too human was pushed up to take the 'lineup' mantle to paper over the cracks just like a couple of the ps3's exclusives were its just it didn't quite make the grade.

If you enjoyed the game then by all means get the game. Thats what gamers do. How many games have we ALL played and enjoyed that were sh*tted on by whoever.

And, hate to break it to ya but Heavenly Sword was *not* a flop. It was short but it had excellent replay value. It also had an 80/81 average if I'm not mistaken.

It's pretty sad that Heavenly Sword, a 5 hour game got the same score as Ninja Gaiden II, a 12 hour game with achievements, leaderboards, etc. And yet HS is called a flop by 360 fanboys.

Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata are flops, sales wise. LO was touted as the FF killer, also Blue Dragon was.

Its too bad they don't have figures on the 'return' end of the market spectrum. I'd be interested to see how many returns or trade ins this game gets. Not only this game, but many of the bigger hits of the last couple of years.

We only hear about how much a game sold. But if, say a game sold 400,000 copies and, after a few days or a week of playing a game 100,000 of those are traded in or returned can it still be a hit? That would be something to explore.

Every summer I feel anxious about the fact that there is not enough time - not to mention money to play/buy all the fall/holiday releases.

But every year, the list of 10-15 "must-own" games gets whittled down to about 5 after over-hyped games don't deliver.

With Too Human doing poorly, I just might be able to get Force Unleashed or LOTR Conquest in addition to Gears 2, Resist. 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2 and COD:WaW -assuming those games don't suck also!

This review has no merit. They obviously haven't finished the entire game yet. Lots of other places gave the game upper 90s, so this review is biased.

It still isn't as bad as Lair or Haze (Hahahaha) and still beats out any game on the PS3. No biased review is going to stop me from enjoying htis great game.

I find it funny that half the people here are saying that the reviewers are biased and that's why it's so high/low. And others are going to get it anyway, regardless of the poor reviews. And still others are disappointed and won't get it now. If reviewers are biased, why do you still read their reviews? If it doesn't matter what the reviewers said, why read the review? The review scale for this industry is such bullsh1t.

On topic: Anyone who really thought anything else was going to happen was lying to themselves. Ten years of hype cannot be lived up to. Look at Duke Nukem. When that game comes out it will be laughed off the face of the planet. When a game is hyped for too long it becomes impossible for it to live up to its own hype. 360 fans should be worried about Alan Wake and PS3 fans should be worried about Killzone 2. Listen carefully: I am NOT saying that either of these games will be bad, just that the hype may be too much to overcome, regardless of how good the game ends up.

EDIT: My point about K2 was that with all the hype surrounding it will have a hard time living up to it. Not that it can't, just that it will be difficult to. Everyone remembers the E3 '05 trailer fiasco. Every game that is overhyped has a very difficult job of actually living up to the hype. The hype builds up people's expectations and a lot of times the games don't meet those expectations.

Comparing games left and right, trying to compare Too Human to Haze. Why don't you just play the game for what it is instead of trying to twist it into another pathetic rant about why 360 sucks? Haze wasn't bad, but it was pretty average and it felt incomplete. I haven't played Too Human yet, but I'm not going to let a review stop me from at least trying it out and making my own judgment instead of using reviews to base my judgment. It makes me shameful as a PS3 Owner to even look at the amount of crap that's going on here. It feels like a counterattack for the reviews of PS3's high-hyped, low-reviewed games.

like i said i agree with his sentiment but im taking what he said in the context of where he said it and at whom the brunt of his venom was directed at. that licking the balls of bill was quite funny but no i dont believe that at all. There are MANY people on this site that just call it as they see it despite their preference whether its against their preferred console or not and those are the guys i like. and they never influence my buying decisions, but i have to say that a lot of Giancarlo's concerns about the game are the same as mine. it's just that i was willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt as i'd only played the demo. it's a shame a lot of my concerns carried over into the final game, and it really sucks that the one thing i was certain would be good (the story), isn't being mentioned much at all, meaning the story is weak (look at any review of a high profile title that is received well, and there's generally lots of praise for the story; ie, Uncharted, Bioshock, MGS4, etc).

i brought up concerns a few weeks back when the demo released about the controls, the combat on the right analog stick, and visuals, and got disagreed out of the room.

i only have this to say to the 360 fanboys: TAKE YOUR LUMPS. look up ANY story on this website about Haze and Lair, and you'll see the exact same thing.

i may not buy Too Human, and instead rent it, but that has nothing to do with this review. i played the demo (for nearly 2 hours), but i just couldn't have fun. i even watched my roommate play it, to get another perspective, and he HATED it. it's simply an average game. that's all. for those that still want to buy it, don't let this review stop you. obviously you saw something in that demo that got you interested, so go for it.

i'm one of those guys that bought Haze and Lair beat them both, and had fun with them, but i still think they are mediocre games not worthy of said purchase. solid rentals, however.

I my self when i go into a place the has people who knows and plays games ie. EBgames I tend to ask the workers if they played a certain game i'm looking at buying because when i read some of the magazines out there whether its a single platform mag or a multiplat mag they all seem to give games different score some high some low a good eg. is Army of Two most reviews i had was decent but that game got a ton of hype at first but dwindled down to pure crap because of what people seen when they went to play a demo of it at the time (thus the reason for the delay of the game) when the game came out I ask someone a EB if they played the person said yes and they enjoyed it so i gave it a try and I liked it.. This is the same this with Lair, Haze or what ever you like if your not sure about the game rent it first that way you re not out the $50-$60 for a game you re only out $3-$5

Alot of the criticism for this game reminds me of aspects of many well received games, such as their comments on enemy AI, is the AI for enemies in Diablo really any better? I remmeber thinking the reviews for Liar were way too harsh when many wii games with awful controls got away as being innovative. I just dont understand the hype machine which is the current videogame media, and even more surprising is how much people feed off it. His entire problem revolves around his inability to get familiar with using the right-stick controls and bugs. He never even respec'd (redistributed his skill points) because he apparently thought he'd found the best skills.

I'd like to see what he thought of the controls in Fight Night Round 3, for example. The system is one that is acclaimed and has been used very well here. Just because this reviewer couldn't take the time or didn't have the ability to play this game well is not a reason to harp on every thing the game does within the first 2 hours of play. If you look at reviews, those who have completed the game with multiple classes rarely criticize the gameplay, which is one of this game's strengths.

I love the ever-upgrading item and have no issues with the interface or the inventory, including accessing charms. The interface is not the best, but hardly worth harping on when we're talking about games. The function is definitely there and the presentation is well above average.

The story and the gameplay are both very good here. The camera has its issues, which the reviewer doesn't even mention mind you, but it works fine most of the time. The interface is not excellent but better than average (who cares, anyway?). The audio is excellent, something else the reviewer never mentions, but the animations during cutscenes and dialogue, etc. (facial expressions) are simple average. The combat animations are far better.

The addition of a "sprint" button could've been nice at certain times, but I never took issue with it, nor ever liked any game prior less because it didn't include one. Most games do not have a "sprint" button.

I give Too Human somewhere under an 8 (or a C+, possible B- in my book) for having a short story line (reminds me of Gears of War) but highly enjoyable gameplay enhanced by the deep-ish skill trees and very deep armor/weapon item system. Its audio is excellent, its interface is better than average but nothing particularly excellent, and the co-op is great. It reminds me of Gears of War in its content, minus online multiplayer outside of the co-op campaign, but with a deep loot system, skill trees, and multiple classes. Some of which, like the Commando and Champion, I just don't prefer, but there are those who like them and the care taken with their trees is just as good as others. The classes seem well-balanced as far as power but not so balanced in the fun and replayable department.

The singleplayer campaign is not as long, but far deeper that Gears. I wish they would've gone further with online multiplayer with dreamcast-ish Phantasy Star Online co-op instead of just a run through the campaign. Deeper character creation could've been cool in that case. Perhaps Too Human will be a larger game next time around.

That said, it's still worth a lengthy rental and hardly a C-.

I agree that I doubt it'll plummet below 7/10 average, simply because it's a better than average game. 7 is average, I'd say - A game that could be a 6 to some (still a game to play, but just not their type of game, in which case they probably shouldn't review it in the first place, since their scores are now based on personal preference as they don't even want, sometimes just don't finish a game -- actually look at all the content -- for a fair review) or an 8 to others (those who particularly enjoy loot-systems and skill-trees - the RPG guy who likes adventure and action, too, in the case of Too Human, for example). The 7 represents, for Too Human, the game that is solid and that those who like will play through many times for the different classes and loot, but also those who don't will play through the storyline once and be bored of.

7 = A solid rental. Buy it if you really like it.

edit: @diugu: I like Heavenly Sword, too, but it wasn't deep at all and I didn't feel compelled to buy it after the rental. Too Human I dig and will probably rent a couple times before waiting for it to hit the bargain bins so I can finish pimping out my various characters.

Haze was a fine rental, too, but not as deep as Too Human, which I don't think is really arguable.

I just keep ignoring hype machines and really only get hyped for a game when I've played it and see video footage without any commentary, etc.

The only thing that satisfies me about this is that Dennis Dyack got his fat, pompous, arrogant mouth shut. Rental. Folks can support this one if you want to but with much better titles being released shortly I'm just gonna gamefly it.
I liked SK's other projects but I'm not going to follow blindly into another purchase based on previous track records example is Team Ninja NG 2 really let me down.
If this sells well (I think it will regardless of reviews) and if SK is granted the rights to make a part 2. Maybe it will be worth revisiting if they get there act together and actually make a game worthy of the talent they have up there.

Haze was touted a Halo killer by Ubisoft and the Haze devs which I laughed at, mostly because they will never get the sales that Halo achieved and because the fanbase of Halo is massive haha. I don't get how you have nine years and can't make the game amazing. Seeing all that has gone on in the industry for almost a decade and still can't deliver. If the 360 wasn't trying to drown out the PC market, I think this would have faired better on the PC.

And being a Halo killer has nothing to do with sales. There are a lot better FPS on the PC or just in the market period, but may not see the media coverage Halo gets. COD4 is a good mainstream title thats better and is also good on the consoles. Look at the Oscar's. The movies who get the most ads and so on usually aren't seen as the best films of the year. Hype and sales don't mean quality.

the game is not that bad, it should have got anything in between B to C+. Its fun, gets a little repetitive but its still good.
I remember when I was young I played a lot of games. I recently read some old reviews and they say the games I enjoyed so much are bad. My point is everybody has a different taste, as long the game is not broken and has major gameplay issues theres some fun to be had.

I want to start off by saying that I do enjoy my 360 versus my PS3 or my Wii, but I have no reason to want either system to fail or just put out shovelware. It's hard to put the blame on Sk and not put it on the magazines that hype the game as well as the MS machine that hypes it as well. How many times have magazines played a factor into your buying a video game only to find out how bad it was. This is before the reviews are posted mind you. It's so hard to find a source that isn't biased one way or another nowadays. I can't afford to pay $60 for games so I have to refer to magazines and G4 for a help in deciding what I will purchase. When there is a game I want to play and I'm unsure I put it in my Gamefly que like others here have posted.
I was so stoked to hear that a demo was gonna come out and I played the demo a few times with different characters(just set your system clock ahead of game release if you didn't know) and my son played it as well. I was frustrated at the camera and the fact that it has a very clumsy targeting system. I could pass on the death animations but I enjoy playing diablo 2 to this day so I like dungeon crawling and looting so I can't say if I won't like it or not. I do have the game prepaid but now after reading all the trollers and reviewers I'm really unsure if I want to drop the $60. I could roll it over to Saints Row or Animal Crossing for my wife.
With Gamefly you won't always get the release the day it comes out or even a week or two after it comes out and by then everyone will have an opinion of the game.
I worked at Gamestop as a key manager for almost two years and I had the ability to test games out right after they came out or before they launched. I had to make sure I wasn't logged online when playing games before release. I wanted to make sure I had the best image of the game to help customers with purchase decisions. I'm not saying that my opinions are the END ALL, by no means are they.
I am guilty of being an achievement hound. I play games on the 360 more often because of that simple fact. Had Sony implemented the feature earlier I might have more games to play. I will say MGS4 is one of my most fav games ever. I could do without the long ass cut scenes but Hideo crafts a create game.

It was a better game than that stupid demo of Too Human. I don't know what they did to this game, but I am disappointed that it didn't meet my expectations. They had a lot... I mean a lot!!! of developer dairies and interviews that overhype this game similiar to Radical game's Haze and look how that turn out!!!! both companies are eating their words right now. They may had a lawsuit with Epic games, but I think Epic can make a better Too Human than this with the Gears of War style of blood gory and better A.I. that doesn't do the same thing.
