Review: Too Human 93/100 (GAMES Magazine - Greece)

Scans of the first published review of Too Human, exclusive to the Xbox 360, have appeared at TooHuman.net. Games Magazine, a nationally syndicated Greek publication for all gaming platforms, declares it the game of the month stating:

"Too Human manages to combine the best elements of action and RPG. The result is not only interesting, but of high quality and very fun as well."

In summary it writes:

"Plus: Very well written story, impressive graphics, explosive action, deep character development.

Minus: Static Camera, few AI issues.

General: Too Human puts new standards for the action console games, and wins a seat among the best games of X360."

Personally i believe Too Human to be Too awesome.i have never played a demo so many times in my life.

Even i admit that the game is not for everyone.Some will hate it while some would love it to bits.I believe that reviews will reflect it by some sites given this game a score as low as a 5 while some will score it a 9 like as we see here.

Anyway i buy games that i want to play and not because of reviews and in my hands on time with the demo, Too human simply amazing.

I played the demo twice trying to like it ... I just didn't. The graphics look worse than a PS2/Xbox 1 game but the story is intriguing.

Ultimately, if I have to force myself to try and like a game then the game is really not that great in my opinion. I'm glad a lot of people like it though.

They include visual design in their graphics score, which is perfectly reasonable.

Visual Design should be included in graphics, because even if you're looking at the most high-res texture, multiple anti-aliased and filtered high-definition particle effects you've ever seen, it's not so impressive if it doesn't have any interesting design involved.

@incogneato: You realize there are publications such as the Official PlayStation magazine, right? And one that is the official magazine of the used/new video game store, GameStop? It's called Game Informer. Sites owned by these publications and the rags themselves are not to be trusted as a be all end of source of information.

Previews on both consoles are almost always positive, because most previews wouldn't even come out without some cash from someone.

The demo was fun and I would give it an 84/100. But I may have been a little short-sighted because it was only the demo and a small cross-section of the game.

The controls take a little time to master because old habits are hard to break. Once you are able to overcome habits formed from other 3rd person shooters from the past, it does become much easier to play and the camera easier on the eye.

I will be buying this game, and I hope it is successful so we can get another two sequels.

Granted the game doesn't look as good as a game like Uncharted, MGS4, or Gears...but for a dungeon crawler with as many enemies on screen as TH is pushing, It looks pretty darn good.

The environments are large and pretty well detailed. The character models are adequate but not great. The effects and explosions are very solid. I wouldn't call the game's graphics "impressive", but they're certainly not terrible...I'd say overall they're slightly above middle of the road for this gen.

Games like these (Dungeon crawling, loot gathering, action RPG's) live and die by loot, replayability, and gameplay....not graphics...otherwise people wouldn't still be playing Diablo II.

I loved the demo, and I'm anxiously awaiting the full release. A good first score is encouraging, hopefully it's the first of many.

Agreed, if Dyack and the Silicon Knights crew would have made the game's genre more clear ahead of time, much of the confusion around the game would have been lifted.

A lot of people have come into this game expecting Ninja Gaiden or God of War, and that's an easy assumption to make considering the style of the action matches up visually along those lines. Those who have invested time into the game see that it has much more in common with Diablo, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and Champions of Norrath. Too Human is a very refreshing game to me, because it's very different than most of the games available this gen.

Because of forces both beyond and within Silicon Knight's control, this game really hasn't gotten a fair shake from a lot of people. Hopefully we'll see that start to change once the game rolls out. Whether you love the game or hate it, it deserves to be judged on it's own merits.

Well from my time with the demo I figure this isn't a game for everyone (me included), but if it twigs with you I think your going to love it. Good way to start the scoring off.

This is how you knw Editorial reviewers know they're seen as gods of the gaming community and abuse their percieved diety.

Even when people have played the demo and seen all the footage of this game, even the 360 fans that dogged this game to hell will do a '180' and say the game is one of the best in history just because editorial reviewers said so.

If editorial reviewers said GoW was a 5/10 type game, most gamers would actually believe it. Unbelievable the hold these gaming sites have over the community. They can say virtually anything and get away wtih it especially if the game is a new IP.

About 90% of the people I've heard actually played it (including myself) has enjoyed it a lot. If you don't go into it expecting something it isn't, the game is gold.

I'm not ganging up on you. But the reason Haze got so much hate was because alot of PS3 owners were hyping it up as a "AAA" exclusive for the PS3. Then they got the demo and the game got released with poor scores and those same PS3 owners jumped off that falling ship real quick.

I really liked the Too Human demo. But it took some time to grow on me. Once I got into upgrading my skills and upgrading my weapons. I was hooked.

I agree with you though that we should wait for all the scores to come in, and people are actually playing the full game before proclaiming this game to be a hit or a flop.

Why do people knock a game just because the graphics arent up to the standards of MGS4, Uncharted, Gears of War, or Mass Effect?

I downloaded the demo and thought the graphics were fine for a game this generation.

I took issue with the camera and controls first just like alot of people. But once you get into the game it's fun. I loved Diablo and Diablo 2 so that might have something to do with it. Upgrading skills and weapons for your character is what makes this game stand out for me.

I think a lot of the people are just looking for clipping and sloppy textures or jagged edges here and there and not looking at the actual level/character/weapon design. The art part seems to be losing its grasp, which is unfortunate.

If things go the way of the fanboy, everything will be perfectly smooth on the edges... but so severely paralyzingly bland that we become extremely jaded and emotionless.

First, I own all systems so this is just my observation of the current state of games on all systems.

360 has nothing to play until Fable 2 - I have already played 360 big hitters - Halo 3, Bioshock, Gears, Mass Effect. There has been a big hole since those games were released. Once I finish a game, I am done - at least for awhile. I though Too Human was garbage.

Now, I have been catching up on my PS3 gaming - Uncharted, R&C, MGS4 and with Ratchet:Quest for Booty coming in two weeks I have a new title to play.

After that, I guess I will be forced to play my Wii (Mario, Metroid) until the big holiday hitters are released for 360/PS3. November is looking sweeeet!

for me, the good:

Story and world. Silicon Knights knows how to craft a good tale and interesting world (see: Eternal Darkness), and the combination of Norse Mythology and a futuristic setting have me more than intrigued.

the bad (or, more accurately, the things i don't really care for):

combat on the right analog stick just isn't enjoyable, and it's simply more fun for me personally to push some button combinations instead of "Press up on left analog stick, and right twice on the right analog stick," or, to shake things up, "Press DOWN on the left analog stick, and left twice on the right analog stick." it doesn't render the game unplayable, but it's certainly not very intuitive. an option to switch between buttons and analog fighting would have been welcome.

graphics: i'm playing the game on a 40" 720p Samsung, and truth told, the game just isn't very pretty, especially the character models. backgrounds are ok, but lack detail. the non-human characters (ie, the robots), look fine, however.

camera: constantly harped on by the press, but in this case, it's true. the camera really isn't your friend, and you are often battling the camera as much as you are your foes. i don't mind a static camera, afterall, i AM a big God of War fan, but the combat camera could use some more work. the different settings for the camera angle help, but not much.

guns seem tacked on: personally, i think guns were just tacked on because of the stereotype that 360 owners love to shoot things, therefore every big game on their system must have that feature (Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Crackdown, Halo 3, etc). there's an auto-aim, but that sort of takes the fun out of shooting things, and often you lock onto the wrong target. the guns don't really have much kick either (at least the guns available in the demo). it's easier to shoot things to death, but it's slightly more enjoyable to kill them with your swords and axes.

another things i don't like is how similar this game looks to every other 360 title released so far. it's not using Unreal Engine 3 anymore, but it certainly LOOKS like a game that used to use Unreal Engine 3. the opening sequence (of the demo, at least), is very reminiscent of the intro scene to Mass Effect, with the camera following your character, while panning to key crew members having a conversation. anyway, the graphics are very familiar. those that know the UE3 know what i'm referring to, and they'll recognize it when playing the game.

from my hour or two playtime with the demo, i'd give the game a 7/10 lowest. 7.5/10 highest. i think games like Folklore and Heavenly Sword are better, and the biggest thing Too Human has going for it is it's story.

with that said, i'll still probably pick it up this month (granted i can, with me and my fiance's newly implemented budget), because it's not a terrible game in the least, but it's not a AAA effort either (the story, however, is certainly a AAA effort). i'm always up for a good hack n' slash (and this game reminds of games like Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norrath in terms of it being "dungeon crawler" type games with leveling up.

I think people are forgetting that a 7.5 is still a good score, often indicative of a title that many people would rate a 9 and others a 5.5.

Some people enjoy games more when they have more detail/anti-aliasing/texture filtering, etc., which is perfectly okay. Some really can't handle not being able to control the camera. That's perfectly okay, too, and I can admit to not being able to enjoy a game as much because of the camera angle. Ninja Gaiden comes to mind.

I tend to look at the art of the game more than graphics, and I tend to look at how fun the game is to play before I bash the camera too hard. If the graphics have all the bells and whistles, then it enhances the experience further for me, but it's not something that I look down on games for, unless it's really painful on the eyes and obvious something better could have been done.

Audio is often overlooked by a large portion of the gaming crowd. I wish more people could get surround sound hooked up and be able to play at a decent enough volume to get involved without neighbors yelling at you or calling the cops.

Anyway, thanks for an honest review and I'll keep it mind just I will these others that will be flooding in for one of the most hyped titles the 360 has had, yet.

1 - please avoid this title. and if you can, kidney punch the dev that made it.
2 - ditto.
3 - ditto.
4 - maybe not a kidney punch, but a good, long scolding.
5 - please, for the love of all that is holy stop buying games like Kane and Lynch and 50 Cent Bulletproof. you'll simply encourage more games like it, then whine on your blog about how "gaming has become soooo passe."
6 - slightly above average. if you are a fan of the genre or gameplay type, you will probably enjoy this game.
7 - above average. worth a rental. a purchase if you find you really enjoy it. a flawed gem.
8 - very good. not perfect, but an fun time regardless. worth owning .
9 - great. this is a must have. it may not be perfect, but no game is. a worthy addition to your gaming collection.
10 - instant classic. stop debating. just buy this damn game already.

the design is ultra impressive,spell design is impressive too(many ripoff s from warcraft like frost armor...etc but even blizzard is out of Ideas, so no offence)

Uncharted is a fantastic title and Resistance was sometimes very creative (although I agree it wasn't more than better than average). Why don't you play some of these games instead of bashing them?

Say whatever you want, the game delivers a strong Diablo-esque presence with sci-fi mod trees. Old school RPG elements like alignment etc.

The game delivers, and for people who like this type of game, it's pretty much a must own. That's it ! I'll be excited to see if they sell alot or whatever and if this game beats the bad rap -- in the end the game delivers what it promised it would.

While I liked the demo and plan on getting the game day 1, I would not put a lot of stock in this review. Sometimes games will get awesome early reviews from PLAY or some unknown mag\website and that doesnt mean the game is actually good and deserving of those reviews.

I look forward to getting the input of more mainstream groups and of course the ever important user reviews. However unless it gets a 4 out of 10 from someone\somplace I really respect I will be getting this game and finding out for myself. I just like the idea of the story.
