pretty hypocritical... HD vs Blu Ray they pull out the we should offer consumers choice. Now that Blu Ray wins they're all about DVD and Downloads are the future. Can you blame them though? They have a stake in downloadable rentals via XBL. Why offer a Blu Ray player that will make them little money when they can continue to push rentals via XBL as their main HD video source... either way I don't really care. I have a PS3, I have a 360, and I'll be damned if I ever pay for a downloadable rental via XBL. If I'm going to watch a movie I'll either catch it on HBO, Cinemax, etc or buy the Blu Ray for $20. I'm not overpaying a cable company or MS to rent a HD video...

i guess i'm exactly the opposite. I'd rather rent a HD movie on LIVE or Direct TV, and when I get a blu-ray player, i'll be renting BR's at blockbuster.

that's the thing... I'm not big on buying movies and there's very few in any given year I care about. So more often than not it's either a movie I'll buy for $20, or something I'll catch sometime down the road when it is on HBO, etc. I buy very few movies in any given year though. But why pay $7 to rent it when you can own it for $20? Personally I'd rather spend the extra money, watch it when I get around to watching it, and have it there to watch whenever I want to watch it. And when it does come to buying movies I normally won't buy them unless I can get them for $20. Walmart wants $30 or more for most Blu Ray movies, no thanks, some retailers want more, no thanks. I'll go to amazon.com and if it's not $20 I won't buy it. Of course there is the exception from time to time when a movie is $20 on dvd and the Blu Ray is $23.95 @ amazon.com. If it's a movie I feel worthy of adding to my collection then I'll normally spend the extra $4 and get it. But more often than not unless it's $20 or less I'll pass. Also I spend way too much money on games annually to be running out and alos buying a bunch of movies. I have better things to buy or save for. Another is that imo Movies are rarely good enough to own... Also, w/ DVR a lot of times why bother buying? V for Vendetta has been on my DVR for probably a year now. Same as Batman although I will buy that at some point once it's released on Blu Ray in July; just not sure if i'm ready to drop $24 for it since I've only watched it twice in the year it's been on my DVR. Some movies I'll just keep on my DVR so I can watch them when I want and if I decide to buy them I'll wait till they're $15... Call me a cheap ass, whatever, the fact of the matter is that I don't see much reason to spend much money on movies. And again, I spend way too much on games annually.

but not til the next xbox is on the market around 2010. plus it will be a cheaper technology. microsoft have played things reasonably well. the dvd drive will hold out til the next-gen, and the new format(blu-ray) will be established, and cheaper to implement.

although, if they had put a hd-dvd drive in the 360, and supported the format more vigorously, then things mit have worked out differently.

The PS3 was "meant" to play games as well. Just because the PS3 has Blu-ray it doesn't mean that it was destined to be just a Blu-ray Player because it's a full fleged gaming console as well. The PS3 is the best value for the money period. By now one would think that Microsoft would at least have Built in WiFi in the 360's. The Wii and PSP have Built in WiFi for gods sake.

But some other movies like disney movies and others like I Am Legend among others look AMAZING,

And even thou there are some good SD tv settings out there, i think that me spending $2,000 on a 1080p lcd was an excellent investment.

IMO having a good HDTV setting is like having a Mercedes, a honda does the same thing but there is certain satisfaction in having top of the line stuff...

movies on blue that shows what real HD is: golden compass and 300. wow anyone who says there isn't a big diff. doesn't have a high-quality HD tv. don't get me wrong; upscaled looks "nice" but it ain't nuthin compared to blu(or even the dearly departed HD-DVD) but i guess robbie bach has to say something to defend his console. i would have asked him why they took advantage of their consumers by marketing a medium (HD-DVD) that he's now saying isn't a big jump above current dvd resolution?

People would pay more for it if it was actually built in the 360, but since the Blu-ray would have to be an External device on the 360, I honestly don't see that many people buying an External Blu-ray Drive on the 360 because the External HD-DVD drive on the 360 didn't sell that well considering the fact that there was Millions more 360's on the market than PS3's at the time. Who knows, maybe if more 360 owners hopped on the HD-DVD bandwagon and bought the External HD-DVD drives and boosted HD-DVD sales, maybe HD-DVD could have defeated Blu-ray? But the selling point for the PS3 is that the Blu-ray was already built-in and whenever you get your PS3 gaming system you get Blu-ray with it.

I'm tired of hearing all about these Xbox 360 Blu-ray rumors and then a little while after the rumor get's shot down by a Microsoft representative.

Microsoft's little dream of Digital Distribution has a LONG way to go. Blu-ray is going to be around for the next 8-10 years at least.

I loved my X360 but once it broke out of warranty I didn't feel it was worth it to buy a new one, I already had a PS3 and I saw a lot of value in it...I could care less about HDDVD/BR as for that I can buy a player, my console is to be used to play games rather than get over-used doing a lot of other things...I like to take care of it

The value I found in the PS3 was: I felt I bought something that wouldn't become primitive/obsolete after 6 or 12 months I purchased it... when I had my X360 it really pissed me off that they included the HDMI output in new Premiums...then you had the Elite that was supposed to be better HW, bigger HD etc,etc...

So it wouldn't surprise me this, a BR drive, which of course MSFT would never confirm but tries to deny unless until it's official...why? because it hurts sales....look at the PS3 sales figures during May in the US, everybody is waiting for the 80 gigger...when is about a game MSFT/SONY only decline to comment the rumor in this case they must really deny it as MSFT is doing, otherwise:
no comment = it's coming = X360 sales slows down

Bluray is going to be real big my end of year and especially next year. There is a difference in picture and sound quality versus upscalled DVDs. Most people are now buy or will buy 42 inch or higher 1080p TVs...and at 1080p...bluray video will blow your shocks off..

Prices are comming down on the 1080p tvs and the PS3 will be at $299 by end of year...so sales of both are going to take off too the moon!

That's easy to say, but the fact is, if the 360 had a bluray player in it, I would have purchased the 360 over the PS3. And I doubt I'm the only one.

When we got a new HDTV, we wanted an all-around player for it. Something that would upconvert our library of DVD's, but something we could also watch bluray with, since we use netflix and get them at the same price as renting DVD's anyway.

I was always partial to the Xbox. My old roommates had one. I would, without a doubt, have purchased the 360, had it provided a bluray player and wifi out of the box.

The question is though, how many times will they have to deny it before people believe it? A standalone player would be a waste of time for them, and incorporating it into the system itself would be pretty much putting a new system out. Think about the restrictions they have on games due to the arcade sku having no hard drive. Does anyone really think they are going to add BluRay into the machine after the first 20 million have sold without it? Makes no sense. I feel sorry for anyone who ever believed this...

Totally agree. At this point in the game, it doesn't make much sense for the 360 to get bluray. But to pretend that the lack of bluray isn't a factor (for some--and maybe not many) is just posturing.

Your "source" is 2 years old. And if you read it, perhaps you also noticed this bit:

There are plenty of articles about the rise of pure digital media and the death of physical media. But if you go on to read user comments on these articles, you'll see that no one is getting behind it.

The fact is, people like "stuff." Materials that they can actually touch. It will be a LOOOOONG time before you see 100% downloadable content with no physical media alternative. A long time. And that's not even considering internet restrictions as mentioned in your source.

I like to think of it this way: I can download a digital copy of a CD for $13, or I can go buy the actual album for the same price. Then rip the album onto my computer, and have BOTH digital and physical media.
