Microsoft Responds To NPD Numbers

Torrence Davis of The Bitbag quotes, "Going into March, some key U.S. retailers were still experiencing the trickledown effect of Xbox 360 console shortages. By the end of March, supply issues had improved and we expect retailers to be fully stocked with Xbox 360 consoles in time for the "Grand Theft Auto IV" launch. According to NPD, 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles sold in March, reclaiming the #2 position in the next-gen console category."

The Playstation 3 is still a million systems behind Xbox 360 in Europe. I didn't realize that = Dominating. Xbox 360 software sales are fine in Europe. The only thing dominating in Europe is the Wii and DS.

2 Million PS3 systems in Japan is nothing to be proud of.

As much as i want to see sony comming in top on console race, SONY SUCKS, period. May be this will give them some heat to think about delaying home and xmb and exclusive games. That's a fake bundle image that was photoshopped, hopefully it doesn't confuse people. Even with the shortages though, they sold around only 10K more which isn't alot assuming they sent out more shipments to the "depleted stock" they said retailers were suffering from.

When in doubt blame Blu-Ray and the Cell. Yet when great looking games are demonstrated and shown on the PS3 this guy isn't posting any of that. The facts are there, it's a fact Blu-Ray improved the quality of Uncharted and Ratchet on the PS3.

Lost Odyssey was 25gbs, Blue Dragon was 21gbs, Final Fantasy 13 will probaly use a 50 gb disc, Killzone 2 uses 2gbs per level, Resistance 2 uses a 50 gb disc, MGS4 uses a 50 gb disc.

Lost Odyssey uses 25 gbs and it is an enormous and packed with content but so is FFx and I have put the same amount of time and energy in games such as FFX which only uses 1 dvd disc and is 2 gbs. Next gen, Xbox 360 is still using DVDs and here we are getting games on multiple discs. Lol, I put more hours into FFX then I did with Lost Odyssey. Blu-Ray couldn't of helped with these Jrpgs on 3-4 discs? And what about an install to improve or help out with load times? An install would of definitely helped with Lost Odyssey. And now we could be seeing 360 users install GTA IV to their HD. You really have no proof the Blu-Ray doesn't or has never improve the quality of PS3 other then what you heard or installs with the PS3. Other than that all signs point to Blu-Ray helping improve the quality. Developers are no longer limited to how much space they can work with. MLB 2K8 is a nice example.

LO and FF are likely 80% uncompressible CGI video. I am refering to 25GB of game assets, not video. Imagine if Uncharted had been an actual 25GB game, instead of a 6-7GB game copied numerous times just to run properly. You would have had something along the lines of WoW scale, not a 10 hour Tomb Raider clone.

You obviously don't have the slightest idea how much game could be made with 25GB of disc space. I'll tell you this, there is not a 25GB ps3 game in existence, and there likely never will be due to the puny, whisper quiet 2X speed BR drive in the ps3.

I had a link showing all the retailers showing *out of stock* earlier this year and late last year, can't find it now and forgot the site.
You could not find an Elite and prem models were gone most of the time leaving a SKU that had way less demand in comparison. NOV 07- MAR 2008 its getting better.

Its ridiculous when Sony fans say nothing was happening it was so bad people thought MSFT was getting out of the console market. So many people knew something was going on due to experiance or media wonder what was up" the PS3 fanboy masses were assuming MSFT was coming out with a super 360 with HD-DVD built in, now PS3 fanboys have selective memories?.

The price drop later on could be just as effective as a pre launch drop. A game's success isn't decided at launch its decided after all the casuals get around to picking any given title up long after the hardcore have stood out side waiting all night waitng to cash in their pre-orders.

Most the hardcore pre-order people have already made up their minds in what they're going to do its probably why the marketing is just now starting.

I don't think it was funny. The PS3 was slapped around by the 360 for the first year of it's lifecycle. Even if the 360 was experiencing shortages, the PS3 doesn't look to be slowing down. I would say even closing the gap in NA is something for Sony to be happy about. As I stated, NA is supposed to be MS's territory. With format war finished, the PS3 is gaining steam. If I were MS, I wouldn't be all that happy about a 5k lead when they were used to a lead of 2 or 3 to 1.

BTW ... I've never called the 360 dead. Anyone saying so is stupid. The 360 will be around and be quite successful this entire generation. So don't lump me in with the rest of those douche bags. You do the math because according to my calculation at 50k units over 360 sales worldwide weekly, the PS3 will conservatively surpass the 360 by end of 2009 and that isn't assuming system sellers which will can easily bring PS3 units to xbox360 parity in record time.

Well the numbers were too close to really celebrate too much but a win is a win. This definately lays some credibility to their hardware shortage excuse for the first 2 months due to the fact that one of their 360 manufactures dropped the 360 and they needed to find another.

Now if April they beat the POS3 by even more then the shortages was not a made up excuse but in fact real.

Thank god I don't listen to Pachter for my financial advice and a big fat F U to that POS vgchartz site which constantly get's it wrong. Even though they did say the 360 was probably going to win their numbers were way off.

gt5p was released in eu in mars and sold/sells well, bet i sold a few consols too. ps3 is outselling xb360 every month in eu. I don't think it's fair to say MS has failed with the 360 and that it's in 3rd place. Worldwide official numbers aren't released. Estimates are given for Europe and who knows about sales in other regions. BTW, it'll take sony years to catch up to MS at the rate they're at now.

Obviously something Phony is doing in the gaming world is very wrong. Not only has the 360 beat it out most of the way between hardware and title sales, it's doing so with a 20GB HD, no built-in wireless no real, chosen HD drive and then of course there's the RROD as the Phonyites so often like refer to. In many ways, the POS3 has better value in terms of what you get and still, the 360 continues to kick its ass. You POS3 owners can chant all you want that 2008 is the year of the POS3, but you're lying to yourself. As much as you hate to see the writing on the wall, the Xbox is here to stay and will continue to steal your brethren.

For starters let’s remind everyone that most of the money is not made from the sale of the console in most cases they lose money. The thing that really matters is attach rate because that’s where the revenue is coming in at. Microsoft is enjoying 49% of the available revenue for the console gaming market, while Sony fights off Nintendo for respectively the other 51%. I would say do the math, 2nd in console sales doesn’t really matter when you’re first in true profits. Nintendo and Sony will have to sale over double to make up in attach rate.

-If it don’t make dollars then it doesn’t make cents; and the argument over how many consoles Sony and Nintendo are selling over MS doesn’t matter when MS is enjoying 60% higher attach rate. MS only has to worry when Sony and Nintendo have double the number consoles MS has sold. Which I don’t think with happen in the current GENS lifetime.

I keep seeing people getting caught up in "attach rates", but those attach rates don't tell the whole picture.

Obviously attach rates are partially influenced by the availability of what people would consider the "killer aps", and they are also related to how long a system has been out because it gives the installed base more time to have purchased games.

I fully expect the 360 to have a good attach rate right now, because "must have" games like Halo3, Bioshock, Gears, Mass Effect and such affect the attach rate (and rightfully so). The PS3 is just starting to hit that point in its life-cycle now with its coveted exclusives like "GT5", "MGS4", "KZ2", "FF13" and such just arriving this year, so obviously the PS3's attach rate will rise in the coming months. Same goes for the Wii; when it gets the next Zelda, StarFox, and such out, I'm sure its attach rates will benefit.

Like I said, not trying to turn it into a system war debate, just saying that "attach rates" don't tell the whole picture when you're using them to compare systems that are in different stages of thier respective life cycles.

If we go by your theory of the killer games driving the attach rate higher, it would be a bit flawed because we didn’t see that from the PS2. Not to say it has been reported several times, that Playstation owners are known for having horrible attach rates. Much respect to the 360, its fans, and its games, but I think the heads at MicroSoft are still worried a tad about the bigger picture:

That since 2006, sales of the 360 have been generally declining, compared to past years. They sold more units in 2006 than they did in 2007 when all their best games came out (you'd think having Halo3 and such land would have boosted console sales, not seen them decline).

I'm not trying to bash the 360, I'm just respectfully pointing out that MS is probably more concearned with the year to year progress, as opposed to a few thousand units week to week.

All the talk is about GTA4 DLC, but I think the bigger picture for MS lies with the exlusives like "Gears 2" and "NinjaGaiden 2" as opposed to the multiplats.

That said, Rock* isn't stupid, and they're well aware they owe their success to the PlayStation format. They track the numbers and are well aware that the 360 sold less units in 2007 than it did in 2006, and that the PS3 and Wii are gaining ground every week.

Rock* will obviously pay attention to the 360 because its a good platform, but that will essentially mean there will be more multiplats, it will not mean Sony and Wii won't get support.

My 360 died a couple of days ago of a black screen and nothing else.I gave it a good kicking to show my dissatisfaction at this crummy piece of hardware and vowed at that point to give up bothering with the 360 anymore.It's under warranty however but even so i was of the mind to just play some games iv'e yet to finish on other systems like Wii and Xbox1.

I got to thinking how the breaking down of a 360 was likely to make it's owner think about defecting to another company as indeed this had crossed my mind briefly.But then it hit me how if i was to do this, the games i'd originally bought the 360 for in the first place and those already being enjoyed would of course not be on PS3.Games such as Too Human, Fable, Halo3, Crackdown, Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, Alan Wake etc etc.The point being that 360's breaking although seriously annoying, is in no real danger of having any major effect on people buying them really because people do buy them for all the games they already have.Those with the mind to purchase a 360 at some point are also unlikely to be put off either because the reason they wanted 360 in the first place was those games they had seen.For the minority i can see this as a problem obviously but that's less of an issue.

As well it's nice signing into 360 and seeing what everybody is playing or has been up to regarding ahievements etc and i certainly would miss all that.

There is a lot of great software for this machine and i guess that's why the attachment is so good
