Microsoft Confirms HD DVD Price Cut To $49.99

Microsoft has confirmed that they are dropping the price of the external HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 from $129.99 to $49.99. This comes just two days after Microsoft confirmed that they would no longer produce the HD DVD player.

Bloomberg is reporting that a Microsoft spokesman has told them that the price point of the external HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 will drop to $49.99.

HD-DVD is dead but with the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player at only $50 with 6 free movies is worth it even if it is a throw away format. How much would it cost if you bought 6 movies in the old DVD format? Let's say each movie you bought cost $9.99, times that by 6 = $60.00 and there not even in High Definition! So you would be getting 6 movies under $10 each plus a up-scale DVD player for FREE that just happens to play a dead format that has close to 400 titles to choose from in High Def. Sounds like a deal to me.

I think what he's saying is that he'd buy it to reduce the wear on the 360's internal DVD drive by using the add-on to watch DVD's. However, you can get a stand-alone DVD player for less than $50 and accomplish the same goal.

Well... because it's the cheapest DVD upscaler in the market... if you want to buy a DVD player that can upscale, play Divx, etc... this is it.... also, it's external and it's also the cheapest external DVD drive that one can you with their laptops or computer... Also comes with 5 HD DVD movies... they are on HD... so, eventhough blu-ray will have these movies.. they are HD movies... and most of them can be played on a standard DVD player...

For $49!? Famboysm aside it's a good deal.

Aren't you assuming that everyone owns a 360? And that all they want to do is watch upscaled DVDs, and nothing in HD? For the $49 plus the cost of the cheapest 360 - $279 - you're already over the price of other upscaling DVD players, or Blu Ray players - and you are within $70 of a PS3 - which upscales, plays Blu Ray movies and games.

For the Special features? Nah I just want the movie, I don't need a 40min behind the scenes documentary with an over payed actor telling me to choose scientology. I don't care how my movies or TV shows were made or, how the actors had it rough on their $30 million payed vacation while getting stoned shooting the film in Amsterdam. I have a choice and I don't choose ether format. You choose PS3 and I choose 360, Some choose mac, some PC. I use Verizon, what do you use? HD DVD offered disc lovers a choice but that isn't the only choice if you want HD movies or TV shows. There is another and they don't have to pay a single dime to Sony in royalties.

Collectors, perhaps? What most people don't know is that the HD-DVD add-on can be used on PCs and not just the Xbox 360. After all, it can also be used as a cheap DVD upscaller.

Tough call on this:

It's a good player, with a decent selection of movies, and it's hard to ignore at that price...but it's also a soon-to-be-obsolete technology.

If nothing else, this is a great chance for current owners to pick up a spare for down the road.

Lets see here, for $50 you get a high-definition dvd player that also works on the pc, and comes with 5 or 6 free movies, which if you sell, will make all of your money back and then some, making it free, and has a good library of dirt-cheap movies, and also plays all your old ones.

It's not going to happen, seeing as how Toshiba themselves has announced they are stopping HD-DVD.

And secondly, the 360 already upscales regular DVD's as long as you use HDMI or VGA.

So the HD-DVD add-on is just using up space. My brother is taking his and just connecting it to the PC lol.
