Xbox 360 Down 18% in 2007, PS3 Sells 1.2 Million, Wii Still Sold Out

Despite what Microsoft has repeatedly called "the greatest holiday lineup in videogame history" with the Games of the Year lineup, the Xbox 360 struggled in 2007 to outpace PS3. Xbox 360 shipments declined 18 percent from 8.9 million in 2006 to 7.3 million in 2007.

On the other hand, Sony PS3 appears to be on the rebound, according to preliminary numbers from Sony's PR department in Foster City. Worldwide totals are estimated to be in the range of 5-6 million for PS3 in 2007.

While exact numbers for Wii in 2007 will not be known until NPD reports in mid-January 2008, Nintendo estimates nearly as many Wiis will be sold in the console's first year and three months (17.5 million) as Microsoft has shipped Xbox 360 in its first two years.

GameFreaks365 notes that two weeks after Christmas, the Nintendo Wii and DS are still sold out in all of the local retailers they contacted: four GameStops, two Game Crazys, a Circuit City, two Wal-Marts, Toys R Us, Meijer and Target.

Well the numbers are fact. The sales in Europe and in Japan are declining even when the 360 has like the best games. In 2008 360 will not have as much good games as 2007 and it will likely sell less again.

Just in case anyone missed it. X360, the only console (that survived) to sell less its 2nd year than it did its 1st year. Those numbers seem pretty right to me considering M$ has said many times they were slowing shipments and we all remember last year near Christmas they tried to flood the market to pad their sales figures. Of course they were going to ship less this year. 8.9+7.2=16.2-1/3rd. There must be about 10.8 million working Xboxes out there. Ha, isn't that the number they claimed last christmas, before we found out how full of sh*t they are?

I guess Sony might be about 6 million for this year cos that doesn't include the launch numbers in Nov Dec, and they reached 5 sold quite a while ago. I'd guess about 7 million overall but I could be wrong.

Sure, there are many people who don't care about the RROD and are buying Xbox 360, but there are also many who are staying away from 360 because of the quality issue. Quality and reliability still stand for something for some people.

The PS2's disc read errors didn't stifle it for long, and this is no different. IMO, the acknowledgement and steps to alleviate the issue should have been taken well before the PS3 launched, and they're paying for it now.

Better late than never though, but Sony's machine really wouldn't have had the reliability(BIG issue with even half-witted consumers) advantage up to now.

as far as the PS2's disc read errors...I don't remember specifically how bad that got...but I do know that I didn't meet one person personally that ever had the problem...the 360 on the other hand...I know less people that have yet to have a RROD than people that did...

not saying that is relevant...I realize that that doesn't mean lots of PS2 didn't pop...but I have noticed since the RROD stuff really came up, more people saying "well the PS2 had quality problems and look at it now"...regardless the ps2 never had close to a ~30% piss-owners-off rate...the 360 has/had one of the most significant and expensive electronic failure rates of all time...and its still not over...

Sony dropped the price, yes...but also spent more than half the year at nearly double the price of the entry 360 (considering after the 20 gig went off the map)...and MS dropped the price of 360 sku's also...so that is more or less moot...in fact, if anything, the fact that the PS3 didn't get wiped off the market entirely is impressive considering how expensive it was compared to its competition...

RROD also had way less of an impact than most thought it would...with relatively no decent announcement from MS, other than 'we will pay tons of money to help this issue', the 360 still sold...

the main point is that Sony and MS had decent years...Sony did suprisingly well considering all the problems with media, BD, games, and it being generally "cool to not like the PS3"...while the 360, with all its huge games, still didn't sell as well as its first year...but kept a decent lead on the PS3...

one thing to learn from this goes towards the PS3...if the PS3 sells worse in 2008 than it did in 2007, with all the huge games coming out for the PS3 in 2008, it can be declared an absolute flop as far as Playstation devices go...but the way sales have ramped on the thing in the past 2 months leaves that to be highly unlikely...it hasn't got one of its hugely anticipated games yet, and still managed to sell on par with the 360's best year so far, even with all the competition...

last year some analysts tried to clarify this, which ultimately ended with MS admitting they were overly optimistic on "sold" 360s...

Sony always used sold as "in home", so they claimed anyway...MS used sold as "in stores"...and Nintendo simply said "we have no fecking idea"...

Sony wasn't necessarily innocent in the matter though, because their numbers were usually confirmed to be inflated overall...but MS met the same issue when they claimed to have over 10 million "sold" before Gears of War even release...in January 2007 multiple retailers reported of MS forcing 360's on them with some Vista push, and MS admitted to the inflated numbers, and pulled the years sales (2006) to something like 8.5 million total...but still was cloudy on if that was in stores or in home...

yes, they sold about 5-7 million in 2007 alone. but overall. at december 29 vgchartz confimed ps3 sold over 8.41 Million units total.

then I looked back at wikipedia sales at september 30. I looked at xbox 360 sales and ps3 sales compared to december time period. PS3 sold about 0.8 million more then the xbox 360. So ps3 almost sold 1 million more then xbox 360 in 3 months.

However sold to retailers is what dropped. Last year MS stuffed the retailer channels to push the "consoles shipped" number to exceed 10 million. However the extra inventory (about 2 million units) took a while to sell in 2007. Therefore MS ended up shipping less units to retailers in 2008, however "sold to consumer" went from about 7 million last year to a little over 8 million this year.

If indeed MS sold(to customers) 17 million x360's in 2 years. This means they have sold just as much as the first year. One the plus for x360 is their software lineup last year as well as cheaper price compare to PS3 for most of the year anyways. On the negative is the PROD and competition from Sony and Nin as x360 didn't have direct competition in 2006. I guess the PROD was a bigger problem for MS than anticipated. For Sony. The PS consoles generally start slow in its first year when the price is high and when they introduce new IP'S and then takeoff in its second year when the price is lower and the retuning heavy hitters arrive.

So the Wii has sold almost better than the gamecube in little more than a year. So what? It's not like their multiplatform games are better, their console is better, or that they have the most awesome exclusive killer-apps. Nintendo has become a huge yawner for most hardcore gamers, even when Mario Galaxy earned universal acclaim. It seems that the Wii is gonna get, AGAIN, the same IP as all of the Nintendo consoles, not more not less.

Wii doesn't deliver like the DS. The DS has deservedly sold what it has sold. It earned its place in hardcore gamers hearts, as it started slow and then skyrocketed due to its immense amount of quality software for cheap (even though the system is full of crap titles too). The Wii on the other hand, is mostly crap, save for Nintendo IP (which I don't want anymore, too used to it, I want something new). The Wii is selling not because it's cheap (because it isn't), but because it is cheapER, Cheap*ER*. Cheaper than 360 and PS3. Had Sony and MSFT's systems not been so expensive, then they would be selling just as good if not better than the Wii, and the Wii wouldn't be selling as good as it's selling now; Or rather, Nintendo would have to drop the Wii to what is worth and stop making a profit on consoles (as if they deserved to make a profit on that pos).

Seriously, if anyone is a Wii owner, there's nothing to be proud about that. So your console sold the most... it's not like it has the killer apps for next-gen, nor that it ever will.

Resistance has already sold more than 2 million units. Motorstorm has sold more than 1 million units. Uncharted has sold more than half a million units. Warhawk has definitely sold a lot more than you would think, since it is sold ONLINE, so retail is only a small percentage. After all, it IS an online game.

It's also funny that you mention them selling "poorly", since they are new IP and that's natural in any new IP. Furthermore, if I turn into a hypocrite as you are, I could tell you "OH, BUT PS3 HAS NO ACHIEVEMENTS, SO THATS UNDERSTANDABLE LOL". However, I won't, I'll simply remind you that Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 have sold pretty well on PS3. Perhaps those individuals that haven’t bought a PS3 yet are waiting till those titles are out first before they buy a PS3. Its also why most people here and analysts are predicting 2008 to be a better year for Sony. To use your logic on this one is like stating only those xbox owners that were only interested in Halo 3 bought there machine 2 years ago and waited. No, of course they didn’t, if they were only interested in that title they would of waited for it to come to market first before they bought the console.

Next, even if the above numbers are wrong, how can you compare sales of one machine that has sold globally for the full year of 2007 (xbox 360), to a console that only has only been on sale for one year in America and Japan, yet Europe still has another 3-4 months of sales before it reaches a year of sales.

The only way to compare the two “like for like” would be:

1. Take the figures as they stand now at 7.4M units for PS3, and add to that the number Europe sells that cover the next 3-4 months, so that 1 year of global sales is reached and then compare.

Or

2. Take xbox 360’s sales figures for the last year, but minus 3-4 months of sales figures from Europe of its total of 7.3M and compare.

Now to take “Power of Green’s” line:

It’s funny that when PS3 fans stated the exact same thing, numerous times over the course of 2007, the extreme xbots have ignored the fact of “lack of competition” in the first year, and claimed victory, yet Sony is up against Microsoft and Nintendo in its first year, so its sales are pretty good considering.

Now I'm not a PS3 fanboy, yes I own a PS3, but its split gaming wise 50/50 with my PC gaming. This site, your correct in you assessment that there are extreme PS3 fans here, that sometimes act like a cult following. But there are an equal number of Xbots here that act the same way, and really hate on the PS3. You make great points and so does oohwii, however both parties (xbox and ps3) fans tend to swing the bar to their favor and change the viewing angle to fit their needs.

Example, the numbers that oohwii used for the PS3 came from vgcharts yet his 360 numbers came from this article. Perhaps he didn't take the 5.6m numbers from this article is because even he didn't think that they were fair. You never really mentioned much at all about the meat of his comment which was pretty much saying, that the games that came out for the 360 should have easily been matched by the games that came out for the PS3.

You make a great argument when you said that there may be people out there waiting for the heavy hitters before buying. Although I'm positive that this carries some validity, it also is purely speculation. One could also argue that a bunch of people are waiting to the RROD problem is completely fixed on the 360.

I agree oohwii did should a bias slant in favor of the 360. I think the fairest way to view the consoles and compare them is using the keep it simple method. Once a console has been out for a year, forget the headstarts, their just simple crutches used to support an argument. The wii has been out only a year also and look at it.

Just view them by the numbers. Is the 360 ahead of the PS3, YES currently by 7-8 million units. Will the PS3 eventually catch the 360, I believe it eventually will. The only problem I have with the past arguments is, PS3 fans will not let 360 fans use RROD as a reason why their sells were less than last year, but they're totally fine with using the 1 year headstart as their support. Either use them both or use neither. It's part of that fair judgement thing that you were speaking of. People keep claiming victory by seperating the markets, it really don't matter which market you are strongest in, 120 million units sold world wide is 120 million units sold. Therefore combined world wide totals are the only totals that should be argued if the argument is "who is winning the nexgen war?"

I own both consoles and love them both. I really don't know why everyone makes such a big deal which one sells the most anyway, as long as great games continue to come out on both, I'm a happy camper. Here's one thing I do believe, if either one for the two HD consoles eliminate the other, you can rest asure the whichever company is the victor, they will stop dropping prices, stop making exclusive deals, and stop caring about the gamer, because "Where else are ya gonna go?'

This is the exact reason a cheeseburger at the airport cost 10-15 bucks depending on the city you're in. "Where else are ya gonna go?"

Back at you, you also make great points. Some of your points are exactly the ones are was trying to make, guess I didn't word it exactly as I would've liked. Its nice to know that there are other individuals with unbiased views on this site, and that like myself, they would hate to see just one company claim victory and gain a monopoly.

Competition amongst the top 3 manufacturers, keeping each of them on their toes, fueling creativity and reducing prices benefits us the consumer. And like you I don't like the term "xbot", I've been guilty of using that term, but use it to describe an over zealous xbox360 owner, who's opinion is that anything other than an Xbox is crap, and fails to take the blinkers of to see that other machines also have their merits and can be equal in overall quality.

I used to own a 360, the first time it went wrong, I got it fixed and sold it. But with that, I feel I can judge somewhat impartially. The two factors that the 360 has over the PS3 are its online service and library of games. But thats because its been out longer and Microsoft after all are a software company, so they have more experience in setting up an online service. Just as Sony are a hardware company and have built a reliable, powerful system in the PS3. Given time though, I believe the PS3's online service will evolve and improve, and of course, its without question that its library of games will also increase, hopefully with more AAA games.

I personally think the console market will be split 3 ways this generation anyway with no dominate leader (unless the Wii continues its current sales). Most games are now multiformat, with only a handful of exclusives on each system (unlike the PS2 era when they pretty much had everything).

Also Sony has lost a lot of what made the PS2 so successful and what Microsoft will never achieve “the casual gamer” these were the people who pushed the PS2 to be the success it was, but these are also the same people who will now choose a Wii over PS3/360.

Saying this I believe the PS3 will eventually sell more consoles than the 360, as it has at least 3 extra years over the Xbox (I’m sorry but I don’t believe this “ten year lifespan”), but with the spiralling cost of development meaning more and more games become multiformat I think the days of one console dominance are over.

I mean, Sony is killing 360 in Japan and beating them badly in Europe. The tides are slowly turning in the states. And the bigs of 08 have yet to drop! Never catch up? Give me a break. Gears 2? People that wanted a 360 for gears already own one. This game will sell but not move units.

The 360 in its second year has managed to sell, with all of its really big hitters coming out, just 7.3M units. The PS3 with only a handful of big hitters and competition on both sides from Microsoft and Nintendo (that remember the 360 didn’t have in its first year), has managed to sell in 14 months 8.9M units. Europe still has 3-4 months of sales yet to reach one year. So if we take the 8.9 as it stands now and include 3-4 months of Europe sales it will probably be about 10-10.5M units by April. But we’ll take the initial 2 months of Japan and America sales that cover Nov-Dec of 2006 off that figure to give us a rough indication of global sales for the year, and your at about 9-9.5M units after one year.

That’s approx. 2M unit difference for the PS3 compared to the 360 after one year.

This year, PS3’s big hitters arrive, so lets say Sony manage to increase that gap for 2008 by 2M more units, as those titles will probably shift a few more units.

Now, if the 360 sells the same this year as last year, that’s 7.3M units to add to its 16-17M units it already has shipped, that equals approx. 23-24M units worldwide by the end of 2008.

If the PS3 sells 2M units more this year over its first year sales, thats:

9.5M (first years estimated global sales) + 11.5M (2M units more for 2008) = 21M units. Add-on the initial 1.3M units we took off for Nov-Dec of 2006 for America and Japan and your at, 22.3M units by the end of 2008.

Even if we say next year those big hitters for PS3 have NO impact and the sales remain the same.

9.5 + 9.5 + 1.3 = 20.3M units. So the gap between PS3 and the 360 would only be about 2 to 3M units by the end of 2008. Now thats just estimates, but you see the general direction this is going, and thats just after one more year of sales. Even if the differences in sales are half of what i’ve just estimated them to be, it would only be 1.5 to 2 years away that the gap is closed. So, 2009 could just see the PS3 take the lead.

But does it really matter, enjoy your machine of choice and play the games, thats one thing even PS3 fans have to admit to, the 360 does have a good games library, and the games are only just starting to roll out on the PS3, so good times ahead for all gamers.

2008 is the year of the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player thx to the format war appearing to be at its end. Gobs and gobs of PS3s will be sold to be Blu-Ray players (kick-ass blu-ray players at that), while the 360 will continue to be sold b/c it has the best online multiplayer games and functionality (despite the Xmas outages). Console numbers will start to favor PS3 more and more, yet games sold will continue to favor the 360. Fanboys from both side will argue and waste enormous amounts of time arguing about whose console has the bigger dongle.

Because although the PS3 was a year behind, people are not on a purchasing schedule as you can see with the wii. It's just as easy for 20-30 million people to get up and buy a ps3 in one year as it is for them to do it in 2 years (especially since there is no PS3 shortage.). Unless of course there is a sells quota that I am un-aware of which prevent consumers from buying but so many in a fiscal year. Now in contrast to that argument, the 360 did suffer the disasterous RROD issue which would definitely STOP people from purchasing it until it was completely fixed.

So while making your 1 year argument, why not consider the RROD problem and call the playing field even. Although, I feel RROD is a bigger issue to over come than a 1 year headstart..ie the wii.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not bashing the PS3. What I am doing here strictly for debating purposes is providing and opposing point of view to your point of view.
