After 2006 holiday there was close to 2.4 million 360's that were shipped and had yet to be sold to consumer.

After 2007 holiday there are close to 1.1 million 360's that have shipped but have yet to be sold to consumer.

Obviously in 2006 MS overshipped, and they didn't want to make that same mistake this year. My feeling is they overshipped 2006 to exceed 10 million sold, since MS reports shipped units as sold units in their earnings release statements.

Sony sold it off for a reason. They took huge losses last year on the PS3 and since they don't have the financial war chest that MS has. I see it as selling off assets to offset losses in other divisions. I guess you can interpret however you want.

It is true that PS2 is still profitable. However the losses last year on PS3 alone, ate into half of the profits that the PS2 garnered from 2000-2006. So yes you are correct in stating that I didn't figure 2007 profits in.

And you guys somehow equate this to MS looking to find another way into the format war.

This is a JVC technology using MS patents. They are paying MS. Also I guess since the guy invented VHS he can't invent anything else? I mean it's one invention and then you retire? And by most poster's logic it has to be something VHS related.

That would be like saying Sony couldn't have invented another format after Beta dics. If that is true we would have never had Blu-...

Bill Gates announced his departure 2 years ago and has only been working part time, so no big deal.

High level execs routinely leave companies to either spend more time with their family, retire since their rich and usually older, or go on to another big company who is offering more cash.

The reason why it will take a while for MS to sink is the fact that the company is worth over 309 billion dollars. Compare that with Sony who is worth 51 billion dollars.

However sold to retailers is what dropped. Last year MS stuffed the retailer channels to push the "consoles shipped" number to exceed 10 million. However the extra inventory (about 2 million units) took a while to sell in 2007. Therefore MS ended up shipping less units to retailers in 2008, however "sold to consumer" went from about 7 million last year to a little over 8 million this year.

That's cool that they will have flashbacks, but you should still play the previous games. There are a lot of story details that woudn't be captured in flashbacks, plus they are awesome games. Arguably the best and most intersting bosses and cutscenes in any game.

Also you have plenty of time between now and MGS4 ships. So I am sure that you will find a month or two where new releases are a little slow, and that would be a perfect time to play the first three.

From DJ:

"The reason I've changed my stance from using VG Chartz is because at the time there was a big debate over who was more accurate: NexGenWars, or VG Chartz. And I was a big supporter of VG since it seemed a lot more accurate, but after Maddens Raiders and Deep proved that even VG wasn't accurate (off by around 15~25%,...

Yep from vgchartz. Name a better website that has console sales in easy to use format that lets you analyze both current and past data.

Also the numbers are adjusted after the official data is released. The only data that is inaccurate are the current month's figures. Even then vgchartz usually shows to be at worst within 20% of the actual data when it gets released.

Since sales numbers get argued so much on n4g, it's good to at least have a tool for researc...

MS is on pace to sell around a million units more in 2007 than 2006.

Sales at the end of 2005 - 1,183,577
Sales at the end of 2006 - 7,959,845

2006 sales == 6,776,268

Sales at the end of 2006 - 7,959,845
Sales up to Dec 15th 2007 - 15,064,577

2007 sales so far == 7,104,732

However the last two weeks of 2006 768,918 units were sold. So add that total to the 2007 total so far and you get 7,873,650 units w...

Earlier this year you were a supporter of the site. In fact the links you posted is how I originally found out about the site.

FWIW the site is pretty accurate and they do adjust there numbers if they are off. For example in the states that get data from 60% of the retailers, which is the same percentage as NPD. Worst case scenario they are 10-20% off on consoles sold. Software they tend to be a little less accurate.

Either way it's better than us just guess...

However the popularity of the series is trending downward as each successor has sold less than the previous installment. MGS3 (which is considered by many the best game) sold a little less than 4 million on a 100 million user base. So less than a 4% attach rate. Given all they hype that MGS4 is recieving, I am sure that sells will be phenomenal for the PS3's installed base. However it isn't likely to match what MGS3 did in total sales.

As the article states many hardcore ga...

I guess what I was asking is why is it a big deal if MS outsold them 2 to 1. It's a better ratio for Sony than what NPD reported for Oct, Sept, and Aug. If MS has been outselling them more than 3 to 1 for the past 3 months, than why is it a suprise that for a single day they outsold them 2 to 1? To me it sounds like improvement for Sony.

Sony claimed a 300% increase over last year. Anyone who is interested in what Sony did last year can look back and find the data. Then do...

You bring up a good point about shipped vs sold, but usually when MS announces those numbers there more about what they shipped for the last quarter. I never have heard them say we shipped X amount last week, or even last month for that matter. That leads me to believe that for this week, what they are talking about is sold to consumers.

I don't think it is amazing that MS knows how much they sold last week. I think all companies know what they sold at any given time, and do...

Sorry maybe saying that PS2 sales was bad may have been the wrong wording. For some reason a lot of folks on this site are under the assumption that PS3==PS2 sales.

The first 6 months the PS2 existed it was only released in Japan. The smallest market out of the big 3. So first year sales will look somewhat close.

By Sept 2001, which wasn't even a year after the US and Europe launches PS2 sales were over 19 million.

But if you read the first sentence it's sales for the period up to Sept 30.

Again not a big difference but when both consoles are only selling in the 5-7 million range I guess the difference of possibly a million is kind of a big deal.

The link you pointed to is for the period ending Sept 30, 2006. The 360 was released Nov 22 in NA, and in Dec for Europe and Japan.

So the 6 million sold was for the first ten months. Granted that is not much more than what PS3 has sold, but I am sure sells were decent for 360 during Oct and Nov last year.

That's pretty impressive for a system that isn't quite 2 years old.
http://vgchartz.com/games/i...

Even if you consider Crackdown a shooter(I don't) that puts 11 out of the 25 as shooters. That ratio isn't too bad. Sony's shooter/million seller ratio is 50%. Granted there are only 2 million+ sellers on the system right now. Ho...
