How does "MS Fail" when they win the software battle? You = Fail.

Ace Ventura,

When one talks about software sales, the only thing that really matters is how much software is actually sold. If the 360 sells more copies of GTAIV than PS3, then that means the MS is making more money off of GTAIV than Sony. Who had a head start, who has what attach rate, none of that really matters in the end as it really comes down to total software sold. Saying that the 360 is selling like garbage when it is selling more than the PS3 makes absolutely no sense...

I agree that consoles sales are important. Those sales should result in software sales. The PS3 must increase its software sales this year tremendously to attract more developers to concentrate on its platform and not port from the 360 version. The PS3 console sales are headed in the right direction. The next trend that the PS3 must start meeting is the software sales. If it does not (which that turnaround has yet to materialize), then that will be a huge problem.

As far a...

I couldn't disagree more. Software sales determine a console's success (that is why consoles sell at a loss, to make $$$ on the games). The 360 is dominating software sales at this point. How is it getting embarrassed? When the PS3 overtakes the 360 in software sales, then you might start to have a foothold for an argument.

Lack of in-game XMB and and an inferior multiplayer experience hurt the PS3 at this point. Sony can fix these things, and I hope they do ASAP.

Hi, we would all be very happy about your success except for the fact that we don't give a damn about you. Thanks for sharing though.

Hi, my name is 1Q08 PS3 price drop. I don't exist because I would have happened during December when consumers are spending bank on consoles.

When lawsuits involving patents actually reach litigation, they go before a jury, a jury that often averages no more than a high school education. Winning such lawsuits often comes down to jury influence, which means that at times it comes down to confusing jurors. Showing such a video and proving its date precedes any Nintendo patent would be a pretty influential start. Convincing the jury that Nintendo possibly knew of this demonstration or had the ability to acquire such information (su...

This is a great analysis of the 360. I completely agree that MS' silence at CES is a horrible sign for 2008. MS cannot put it on cruise control and expect to keep the console wars lead (which, despite what fanboys and 80 IQers say, software sales determine who is winning the console war and the 360 is dominating that aspect currently). Multi-platform games will sell well on the 360, but converting hold-outs and new gamers to the 360 will require some great new exclusives (GoW2 would do it)...

2008 is the year of the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player thx to the format war appearing to be at its end. Gobs and gobs of PS3s will be sold to be Blu-Ray players (kick-ass blu-ray players at that), while the 360 will continue to be sold b/c it has the best online multiplayer games and functionality (despite the Xmas outages). Console numbers will start to favor PS3 more and more, yet games sold will continue to favor the 360. Fanboys from both side will argue and waste enormous amounts of time ar...

Software sales are the real tell as to who wins the console war (that is where the profits are). Sony is losing this so far. If people start buying a PS3 only for Blu-Ray and buy very few games with it, that will hurt Sony's console war cause (but help in the movie distribution war). Please realize that console sales are shown b/c they are an indication of future software sales. This may not hold as true for the PS3 b/c of its strength as a movie player, which may be its primary purpose f...

Yes, the PS3 has a good chance to vastly improve its software sales in 2008 with big games such as you have mentioned. Everyone needs to realize that console sales are secondary in the console wars. The point of selling a console is to sell software (that is why companies take a large $$$ loss on every console). The PS3 must sell a ton more software to have a chance of catching up in the console war. Thus far, this has been the PS3's biggest failure, and it is the core reason for being in...

Blu-Ray taking over the format war will not have a significant effect on the console war. The console war is all about games and software sold (and the PS3 is absolutely getting killed in this regard and must have a stellar 2008 to turn the tide). People buying a PS3 solely for Blu will not help Sony win the console war. Last time I checked, the 360 did not come pre-equipped with an HD-DVD drive so, M$ loses no more $$$ per box b/c of the format war changing tides. Sony's decision to equi...

This has been stated before, but I want to emphasize its importance to all. The point of selling a console is to sell software. Most current generation consoles are sold at a pretty substantial loss (xbox360 and PS3). This loss is made up by selling games (attach rate). Microsoft would gladly sell 1/3 the consoles if it had 3x the attach rate of the competition. Sony is absolutely getting killed on this front thus far. This will be the Wii's demise as well unless some great exclusives s...

Gamers will not be the deciding factor in a movie format war. Ma and Pa and Average Joe will be, and they are not gamers. Sales of both formats are still insignificant. Ma, Pa, & Avg Joe are not going to spend $300 - $500 on a next gen player. However, some Ma, Pa, & Avg Joes will spend $99 / $87 on one for Xmas. HD-DVD has the best chance to take a dominate place in consumer markets because of price this holiday season. People can argue movie titles available, tech specs, etc, ...
