You're right. They have nothing to do with MS. They have to do with the POS hardware they put out that Gamestop/EB are hemmoraging money on through the replacement warranty. Why would they just stop offering it? I worked in retail, and extended warranties go directly to a company's bottom line profit. 360 is garbage..the d-pad goes bunk after about 6 months, starts to stick and not respond very well anymore. I've seen this happen on 3 controllers. Kinda makes changing weapons a little iffy...JUNK hardware with good games.
