If you think Sony will stop piracy due to a single firmware update, you are sadly mistaken. This will go on for the PS3's life cycle now. Back and forth. Custom firmware will always come out to pirate the latest games. I'll hold out until GT5, and Twisted Metal are out before I decide to buy.
I can't see any timed exclusive with this being so close to the new MK. It would be great hype for both platform owners.
I think this is very interesting. I notice some here will defend Sony's intellectual property rights to the grave, which I can kind of understand given your investment. I think some will cut their losses and jump to the dark side, maybe not now, but maybe if the hackers can prove that they can downgrade the firmware someway like was done on the psp.
I guess we'll need to wait and see how this plays out.

A cheap Chinese version is coming out, and a 2TB HDD is around $110 on NewEgg, which combined will be cheaper than buying games in any given year, or even months for gaming addicts. So yeah, keep convincing yourselves this won't take off because it is too expensive. In the long run, free games are cheaper than what you'll have to splurge on this stuff; that's kind of the point, so quit being stupid about the math.

Yep, if you don't buy a new one, you don't give Sony hardware figures to brag about. Buy used and give Gamestop some cash, and cut Sony out. Then, they won't make money on pirated games, or hardware.
