Sora didnt make one little mistake, he was stright up consume by darkness, just like riku was. Riku, had to fight every final boss from every KH one after the other in order to save him.
Heck he fought and won young xeanhort and even sora+venthus final form in order to reclaim his soul (or heart).
Riku earn his spot as a KB master.
