If you go to a media-store or order with Dell, you always get Windows installed, whether you want it or not (I live in the Netherlands, so I don't have the option). I immediately put Ubuntu on my laptop. But I kept Vista on it, so I have dual-boot now. I only keep Vista for running a few games like Fallout 3 (and waiting for Dragons Age, Origins). I don't see that running on Ubuntu. But most games I play on my PS3 or PSP, so I hardly use Vista. But I don't like the fact that Windows is pushed...

The only problem is that you have a lot of Virus-attacks and you have to pay for it. But if you have Windows installed on your PC when you bought it, you still can download all the open-source software. Open-Office, the Gimp, etcetera are also available for Windows.

I also was a PC-gamer, and although it's possible to play Windows-games on Linux (via Wine or Cedega) it's not easy to install and might not work. But when I switched to console-gaming I use my PC only for internet, mail, open-office and Java-developement. So Linux is the best choice for me (except for WiFi, damn it).

You can also try to install Open Solaris. That's working fast, robust and looks similar to Ubuntu, because it also uses Gnome or KDE. It's not a Linux clone (basically Linux is a clone of Unix/Solaris). But the hardwaresupport is not as good as Ubuntu. Solaris does not support my soundcard for example, when Ubuntu has no problem at all (strangely enough Fedora had a LOT of problems with my soundcard). But Ubuntu does not support my WiFi-card (Intel IWL3945) enough. Vista has no trouble at all...

The GIMP is also available for Windows, also for FREE! If you like it and it suits your needs, then Photoshop is no reason anymore to stay with Windows.

You already can play games through a browser like WoW or QuakeLive. The only thing Onlive does is connect a small device to your TV that runs something like a browser. The principle is the same, streaming data via a browser.

About the bandwidth : I'm not sure about the USA, but here in western Europe, a lot of people already have 20 Mb/s connections. It comes with a voip-bundle for a fair price.

People at my office are very happy with their new HTC's, but it's just a simple fact that the new phones just copy the touchscreen interface of the IPhone. If Apple didn't come with the IPhone, those people would still be using stylusses with that crap version of Windows Mobile.

What always amazed me were the reviews in the beginning 1-1.5 year of the 360. It was the first next-gen console on the market, and when games like Halo 3, FEAR and GeoW appeared everyone was blown away and gave those titles 9.5's and 10's. Nowadays people aren't blown away anymore because there are so much games with the same high quality on both the 360 and PS3. So the reviewers start making some more realistic reviews instead of keep giving all these quality FPS's su-per high grades. I thi...

Yeah, I know. These are the Eee-PC's right? They're becoming popular indeed. But I thought MS also tried out Eee-PC's with a light version of XP. Anyway, that's a good initiative.

It is faster and more stable. Also no virusproblems. The security in Ubuntu is very good (thank Unix for that). For running programs there are 2 options :

1. Find Linuxprograms that do the same thing (they're free open source). This is the best option.
2. Run the windowsprogram with Wine. A lot of programs are supported with Wine but not all.

Check the Ubuntu live-cd. Then you don't have to install it and run it from the cd-player. Also you can make a dual-boot...

I'm using Linux for a long time now. First Suse but switched to Ubuntu a few years ago. In the beginning Wifi was hard to get working. I had some success by using the Windowsdrivers via NDISWrapper. But at a certain point I got it working with linux drivers. So I was happy. But then a new Kernel-upgrade came, and Wifi stopped working again. Then I bought a new laptop from Dell. I chose Dell because they were starting to support Ubuntu. But again : Wifi trouble! There was a native driver that ...

Games evolve. I've been gaming since the 80's and I certainly had a lot of fun with games like Knighlore on the ZX when I was a kid. But that can't be compared to the games right now. Also this moron is a big Mario fan. I never understood the hype around Mario-games. Also this Smashbro's is silly IMO. Nintendo was never my thing, but the author certainly has it's roots there. I'll play a good FPS way over any platformer like Mario. Also games like GoW, Halflife, etc. are classics. Only they'r...

As long as MS has a contract with a lot of hardware vendors automatically installing Windows and most companies use Windows (older versions, but who cares) MS has nothing to worry about. It will become a BIG problem when vendors are giving the customers the option to choose : Computer with Windows $600,- or Computer with Ubuntu $500,-.

Ubuntu itself is good enough, safe and user friendly. Games you play on your console. Installing Yellowdog or Ubuntu on the PS3 I think is just a ...

Of course Wolfenstein and Doom started the revolution of FPS. Halflife expanded it. Halo wasn't the reason I bought the Xbox, it was DOA and Ninja Gaiden. But I bought Halo 2 since I wanted a good FPS that wasn't a crap port of the PC. But I stopped playing Halo 2 half way because I couldn't stand it anymore. I just didn't like the setting, it was all so pink and blue. The game itself played fine though, much better than those ports of the PC. So for the original XBox it was a good title, bu...

It's simple. People don't buy HDTV's enough. I own one, but most of my family and friends don't. They just have to reduce the production a bit until the market starts growing again.

Outsourcing can kill your company. I've worked for DaimlerChrysler Netherlands (when it wasn't split up again) and they outsourced their IT to Infosys (India) and that almost instantly killed the company. They had to call in western developers to set things straight again. Sony could also make a big m...

Bioware made the gratest RPG game ever : Baldurs Gate II. That was EPIC! And after that another masterpiece Neverwinter Nights. These JRPG's are not my thing though so I'm biassed. I bought Crisis Core for my PSP and hated it. What a crap game. I like Anime/Manga (big fan of Ghost in the Shell) but those Final Fantasy games are not for me.

The difference between a PS3 40Gb and a launch 60Gb is not as huge as the difference between the Xbox 360 Elite and the Arcade unit. The Arcade unit is not competing with the PS3, the Elite should do that.

Anyway, my point is that the comparison between these companies is silly. Especially when the handhelds also count.

Comparing all Xbox 360 SKU's with only one PS3 model is also unfair. Why is comparing a PSP with an Xbox360 different from comparing an Xbox 360 Arcade with a Playstation 3?

He mentions that Sony is going to repair the Dutch broken PS3's that are out of warranty and that it has probably to do with bad press. Well, bad press will certainly have something to do with it, but it's also consumers going to court. Dutch law just orders Sony to fix the PS3's. This warranty of 1 year is, according to Dutch law, ridiculous and should be at least 3 years.

Also, if the PS3 is such a fantastic reliable machine, why doesn't Sony just put 3 years of warranty on the...

Well, I come from the Netherlands and I've seen the show. What was said in the show was : Sony has a remarkable low failure rate, why don't they just fix these few broken PS3's and be done with it. Now it costs them their reputation.

Also, in the Netherlands shops will say : You have a one year warranty, but the Dutch law protects their consumers. According to Dutch law, a shop/manufacturer should give warranty on the expected duration of usage of a product, in the case of a PS3,...
