There were two things that FORCED DVD on people because like now... idiots REFUSED to let go of their VHS players, those things were PS2s and PC DVD burner/players. When those two things took off, DVD adoption multiplied significantly causing a technology shift. Bluray is doing better without the PC Bluray burner/player being mainstream at this point.

6 out of 8 of our 360 online crew has had RROD at least once... and the last 2 folks ain't so optimistic especially since the warranty is getting ready to go out. It would be best if it RROD'd now so they can get a replacement instead of 6 months later or so when it runs out for them.
My co-workers/friends and I have a blast playing some 360 games online. But 6 out of 8 of us have had RROD at least once. 2 of us have had it twice or more, and the last 2 that have not got RROD claims their 360s are starting to "act funny".

But PCs have moved AWAY from disc based playing along time ago, as ALL PC games now install instead of spinning data off discs. Installs are the way of the future, not playing off the discs. You have it bass ackwards. Imagine a PC going away from installs now....
Uhhh, recorders are players too, so they will add to the count of players... maybe? It will be a while still before Bluray takes over standalone players, although I scored a Black Friday Sharp Aquos bluray player for $169. Nice addition to my PS3 Bluray family.
If the 360 was built like the Zune, I would be a cheering an for it. The Zune is an AWESOME piece of hardware and does not get the credit it deserves. Ironically(coming from a software company), the software associate with it blows donkey balls. It is a terrible fact that I paid $79 for a brand new 30GB Zune and it has over TWICE the expected shelflife of the $400 360. And I am using $400 because that is the price most of us paid for them that are experiencing the RROD.
I have read the comments. I agree that there are other electronics of poor design or quality. But how many cost $400 and have a life expectancy less than a toaster? I honestly expect Microsoft to be sued regardless of the 3 year warranty. Because when it wears out, the RROD is STILL the fault of the manufacturer and prior knowledge has been proven prior to release. It will be easy for top notch lawyers who want a big paycheck to get rich off the idea of a class action lawsuit on the 360....
The core fanbase for FF7 are in large Sony console gamers. Many 360 fans may not even realize what FF7 is when it comes out. Final Fantasy's core audience is with Playstation products, not Microsoft. I am not saying it won't sell on the 360, but not near as much as on a Sony based console. Although if Microsoft made a "Kill Sony by purchasing this game" commercial, then it may sell heavily.
If it had a reset button it would be nice, the only fix is to remove the battery or wait until it drains to zero... only then can you reboot your 30GB Zune, but if you are idiot enough to try another sync with your PC, it will happen again and again until a fix is made.
