Will The PS3 Rule The MMO Genre?

Massively multiplayer online games have always thrived on the PC. For a number of reasons however mmos have not made such a great transition to consoles. Yet this gen seems to be the start of many great mmo releases on consoles. So far, the PS3 and Xbox360 seem to both have promising upcoming titles but which console seems to have a lead in the genre?

With a nice twist of fun shoot em up mayhem and a spy like storyline it's hard not to think about The Agency when you wonder about the PS3's mmos. Maybe even more promising is the online DC Universe. Announced at E3, DC Universe really didn't shock many but it has already made incredible progress and is shaping up to be a great MMO experience. A more casual type MMO coming out soon is Free Realms. The best part of this MMO is that it's completely free which makes it at least worth trying out. If that's not enough to feed your mmo hunger take a glance at a hardcore massively multiplayer shooter that features 256 player battles.  MAG was also announced at E3 next to DC Universe and a trailer was shown displaying huge warfare with a side of strategy. Still not convinced? In addition to these four mmos there is also speculation about a Square Enix MMO that will be announced at this year's E3 and since Sony has made a deal with NCsoft to bring mmos to the PS3 many speculate that titles like Blade Soul and Aion: Tower Of Eternity will find their way to the PS3.

So what does the Xbox360 have to offer in the MMO genre? Well it actually holds its own. The already released gory Age of Conan MMO is in development as we speak for the xbox360. Even though the game has been criticized for its bugs and errors I expect the console version to have less issues. On top of that the massive online gang and cops universe of APB is surely expected to be a fun experience for many. Microsoft's console also has an answer to the PS3's DC Universe called Champions Online which unlike DCU has its own universe unique from the typical Marvel and DC. If you are fan of hardcore shooters and mmos Huxley might be a must have. Although we haven't heard much from the game and little of what we seen hasn't been that great there is still time for much improvement and simply fun gameplay may overshadow some small doubts.

Bottom line: Both consoles seem to have their share of powerful and exciting MMOs, it's only a matter of time to find out which console will dominate the genre.

Right, theoretically, with the XBL Gold users I presume that XBL Silver will allow access into MMOs.
However, as we know MMOs are known widely to be more addictive than just online games.
Say; what happens, theortically speaking, if an 360 user has XBL Gold, BUT ends up playing the MMOs MORE?
Would they be technically short changed? Because of playing the MMOs more than XBL Gold's online gaming features and paying twice the price of a PS3 exclusive MMO?

Hmm. I wonder how that will all work out.

Didn't no both consoles had this many mmos in the work. Use to play Everquest on the ps2 hope they bring Everquest 2 to the ps3.

I can't wait to try The Agency and MAG.
I've never played a shooter MMO.

I hope it is released in early 2010 if possible.

Thank you for getting it right. Massively instead of Massive... That really bugs me when people get it wrong...

More on topic... I think the PS3 target audience wont be into it for a while now... I'd hope so cause it could be a lot of fun but I still think it will be PC's main cash crop for a while.

Review - Outcast: A New Beginning (PS5) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Kyle Nicol: "It does have a lot of issues, but Outcast: A New Beginning also features its fair share of saving graces. It is flawed, but a somewhat good time in smaller bursts. It’s a shame its open world design felt generic, never succeeding at captivating me, because the core combat mechanics and admittedly great visual design did a lot of heavy lifting. It’s an unapologetic old-school game in its premise and content; it doesn’t try to be anything else, nor does it try to punch above its weight. Whether you think this is commendable or not is up to your opinion."

I'm keeping this on my radar. It felt like a AA game from yesteryear. Which is fine but not at $70. I'll pick it up on a decent sale plus thst comes with an added benefit of bug fixes so win win.
