All that was said was that a specific cell processor design was dead in the water, not all cell processor designs.

I'm still confused how they can call the processor slow in the previous article considering the amount of bandwith for data transfer between the cells and their ability to perform real-time processing faster than other chipsets.

That an updated PS3 processor will go into the PS4. It will be more powerful, but work in the same way; so all knowledge and experience gained by developers from working on the PS3 will go directly to skill with the PS4. The more powerful chip as well as more RAM and a better graphics card (also possibly a new optical drive) will mean the PS4 will have high quality games right away, not having to wait a year after release to see awesome games like Drake's Fortune.

I hope this is true, but it was like 3 months ago when I heard it and I can;t remember where.

Maybe I'm a genius or I understood the prior article. It seemed pretty clear that IBM wasn't interested in making the 32 SPU cell. Which is the successor to the PowerXCell-8i cpu. It never claimed it was a failure, even though a lot of people tried that spin. They are merely stopping development in that sector and switching to a more GPU/CPU approach for further supercomputers.

The "magic" behind a good parallel program is to be able to escalate as many processors as possible. Thats why intel is putting so much effort into the i9 cpus. Multi threading is the way to go, unless we reach a massive breakthrough in quantum computing.

The SPE's are a nightmare to develop for even for seasoned programmers. You have to specifically assign an SPE for each task to run on.

32 would be a nightmare like Pandamobile said, what i would do is make a 10-12 (1 one OS and another for backup reasons) and just try to make them better than the ones we have now so their is no need for massive ammounts of them...hell you could even leave it at 8 if u just improved them enough.
