Cell processor faster than Core i7 965 XE H.264 video: New Playstation 3 codec uses for transcoding

"Now put Linux Developer Fixstars a video converter called Codecsys CE-10, which was to encode movies into MPEG-4-AVC format (H.265) The Cell processor uses a Playstation 3 - this format will be predominantly on Blu-Ray media and IP-TV via video-stream uses. beating core i7 by such a margin on that kinda task is nothing short of amazing. core i7 is a **very** powerful multi-core CPU that came out 2 years after CELL, costs way more to procduce and is backed by intel's SSE huge popularity amongst programmers!

people who still doubt that this is useful for gaming are living in denial. video codecs require tons of signal analysis and processing: advanced computations requiring a lot of math and number crunching that can just as well be used for advanced game physics, animations, special effects, audio, you name it... tons of cool stuff for us gamers.

here's the sad truth:

whenever a game looks better on 360, we all know that it's because the developers were too ignorant or too lazy to fully use the CELL.

This is why, as a gamer, I give them a big FAT FINGER.

I think you might be a little misguided. Don't get me wrong, I have a PS3 (can only afford 1 system atm), and I genuinely feel it was the better investment of all three current-gen consoles, so in a manner of speaking, we are on the "same team". But if you happen to be blessed enough to own both a PS3 and and XBOX 360, I think you should be greatfull to be so fortunate. I mean, If I had the money (I got laid off) to get an XBOX 360 along with my PS3, I would be in gamers heaven.

If yours is broken, I hope that you would take MS on their offer to get it fixed for free....and if you don't see it that way, if you don't like the XBOX anymore, well......

I think once the likes of Bach and Moore at MS saw the final design of the PS3 processor they knew they had to implement plan B. Start laying out money to developers to keep multiplatform versions the same on both consoles. If they just let developers loose on the respective hardware the 360 would be dead by now. I guess you can't blame Ms for trying to protect their investment. They want to make money and couldn't care less what PS3 owners think of them. Of course thats not where the story ends. PS3 exclusives are what prove that MS is paying people off to hold back development of PS3 versions of multiplat titles.

Here is my opinion: PS3 is the most capable system, definately. However the 360 has the best range of enjoyable games, though this is based highly on opinion - it is the opinion I have. Sure, I love MGS4 and think it is probably the best game of all time. But I enjoy halo, fable and lost odyssey too much to make the sacrafice. Also, by the way. A 360 will actually cost more money than a ps3 - for a ps3 you can use standard components (usb cables, hard drives etc). For a 360 you have to buy specialized stupid ms equivalents (the hdd just uses sata, but they rearranged the pins...). Also of note, I only own a 360, and to be honest my next console would be a wii - unless final fantasy 13 is truely superior on the ps3 (though, they probably won't bother to use its potential)

My logic is. If Sony allows devs to fully utilise the full potential of the Ps3 now we wuld have games that are out of this world now BUT, for the next 3-4 years well will not be able to see any major improvements in both gamplay and graphics. In other words it will make current gen go obsolete fast and consumers will demand next gen sooner. This goes in line with what Kaz said earlier.

If the question from most devs was "How can we make the best game?" instead of "How can we get the most money?" the Ps3 would be the prime choice.

Freedom with Blu Ray and unmatched visuals with the understanding and utilization the RSX and Cell which prove to be magnificent pieces of technology with effort.

Unfortunately games will be gimped for equality and the better buck...that's just how it is.

If I remember correctly, someone or maybe Sony themselves said that the PS3 has a SPU locked for 2 possible purpose, 1) in case one fails and 2)when the time comes and more devs are ready, the SPU would be unlock to prolong the PS3's life.
We've seen Sony strategy with the PS1, PS2, and PSP, now with the PS3. Sony doesn't want all the Dev to create games using their system's full ability. Dev has to learn and unfold it.

I dont think Sony is holding the PS3 power back.

It's more like a learning process. It just take time and a lot of resources to get used to the unconventional PS3 arch.

Devs need to think out of the PC box.

PC arch (360 medium spec PC)= Powerful GPU (graphic tasks) and physics, AI, etc running on CPU.

If devs keep using the ps3 like a pc, games will look (and feel) like a medium spec PC. However, as devs learn how to unload the GPU and use the Cell in a more efficient way, that is curently GPU only tasks ---> THE CELL, we will see massive gains in ps3's games fidelity.

This reminds me, the apparently weak PS2. That baby, ended up doing stuff people believe only possible on the xbox1. Black, Hitman:Blood Money, MGS3, GoW2, those games were a MAJOR graphical jump from earlier games on the old ps2.

This gen is barely starting for the PS3. It's mindblowing to imagine that KZ2 in 4 years will look like MGS2 when compared with MGS3.

Because the CELL B.E. was originally supposed to run "normally" at 4.0Ghz with its PEAK clock at 6.0Ghz without the chip frying.
Also the XDR's normal Clock is 6.0Ghz (you can check that on the rambus site)

So if they decide to "overclock" the PS3's Processor and XDR RAM to 4.0Ghz its easily possible through a FW update (same as the PSP) and we'd get a significant performance increase.

Also there were rumors about the RSX having a "mini-cell" or that its GPU had more than one core... so you never know.

Furthermore, the cell processor is also great at vector math. Most graphics tasks are also related with vector math, so combining the Cell's power in terms of floating point ops and vector math gets you excellent results, something that can't be said about most PC processors, let alone Xbox 360's. since Cell is so powerful, the other parts of PS3 don't catch up such as RSX. I heard from various interviews from SONY first party developers that Cell, in fact, helps out RSX in graphic while it does everything normal CPU supposes to do.

So this idea of ps4 having no gpu, only cellBE seems possible now, keep in mind that the improvement of the cell is taking 2 different routes, one is improving cellBE but so that ps3 software can still run on it, and improving the cellBE disregarding the ps3, which will probably be what the ps4 uses.

Let me think how great Trico and God of War 3 will be! My jaw dropped when I saw the "Epic-Scale Trailer" of God of War 3. And the Trico Trailer blowed me completly away. Imagine how revolutionary those two games will look/play/feel, thanks to the Cell processor! At E3 we will see the latest build of GOW 3 and at TGS the latest build of Trico, prepare to be blown away. Those two games are the MAIN reason, why I bought the Playstation 3!

This is coming from an i7 and PS3 owner.

I love both. But seriously my Core i7 PC with 6GB of RAM and a GTX 285 (along with Nvidia's Physx) murders the PS3. I compare them side to side just for fun with Fallout, Far Cry, GTA and more. The difference is like night & day.

The cell is nice, but at the end of the day the PS3's GPU holds the system back from comparing it game performance wise to an i7 PC equipped with a high end GPU.

Did you ever come to think that the games you mentioned all use less than 30% of the Cell's power, and that they have not even tried to maximize the PS3 when creating them?

I also love Crysis. I have each, have played the hell out of each. At the end of the day though Crysis is by FAR more impressive than Uncharted and yes even Killzone 2 in everyway graphically, and even when it comes to physics. It will be the same case with Uncharted 2, Crysis is freaking ridicoulous when maxed out... Not that I'm saying Uncharted 2 will not be a leap from Uncharted 1 though but it's too early to tell just HOW MUCH of a leap it will be.

When talking about real world gaming performance the PS3's GPU is holding the Cell back no matter HOW you try to flip it. It's kind of dissapointing, but regardless I still love seeing what the system can do.

Oh and don't be silly comparing a Nvidia GPU to the Cell... a CPU. Apples and oranges... Anyways I think it's impressive that a video card can HELP with physics... You can't say that about any console GPU :P. In no way was I trying to say PhysX is better than Cell lol lol lol.

For every advantage there's a disadvantage. Running purely CPU bound applications might benefit you, but when you go into the realm of real world gaming where memory and GPU power make a bigger difference all of that CPU power doesn't matter. Then when you go into real world computing, a GPU blows either of these away.

The Cell, if used correctly can do both CPU and GPU work. The PS3's GPU is made to support the Cell more than being a full-blown GPU.

CPUs are terrible at doing GPU bound work. There isn't a graphics API designed to effectively utilize it. Then there's how limited you are with memory.

Now that's probably why the Cell isn't made the same way your average CPU.

Killzone 2 used 60% of the Cell, When they start using 100%, and then optimizing it even further we will be amazed yet again. The KZ2 engine is also a very young engine, and I suspect it's not much of a resource saver.

The KZ2 devs also stated that they had no problems when it came to memory limitations. The Cell CPU utilizes memory quite differently, and doesn't have such a need for it as regular CPUs.

He does have a point, The reason we have GPU's( basically a whole second "computer") is because they are designed to calculate specific instruction sets that are different from a CPU library.

Of course Cell was suppose to do both, but that also means you have to have an API that handles the visuals as well.
OpenGL and Direct3D both have their own language of instruction sets that basically any GPU understands today.
If the Cell has indeed the power to calculate the instruction sets for visuals, then how come it hasn't been used yet?

Im not saying it can't do it, but its strange you aren't seeing it either.

Eh? the DR is all done on the RSX, were the cell helps is physics/vertex manipulation, in others words "where" stuff will be placed. The graphics itself is soley up to the RSX to paint in.

Nothing solidly positive has ever really been said about the 360. There's just been a general persistent insistence that its the best system despite its issues. Meanwhile the PS3's performance has been questioned at every turn. This has forced Sony to defend it and bring evidence such as the article causing all this hassle.

This is exactly why initially developers had such a hard time wrapping their collective heads around the technology itself. They came into it thinking it would perform like a computer, when in actuality it has simularities of a computer but it's language and pathways are alien in today's tech.

It's tough for people to break the mold of what they are used too but when they do it's usually a fantastic result, and eventually others will follow.

The reason why the true potential of the CELL hasn't been unleashed yet is because the tools needed to do so don't even exist or are still in development. Gradually they will become available to the developers who could then create mind blowing games only possible on the PS3. The compiler from IBM has been done for a while now and the PS3 doesn't even meet direct x 11 spec nore the spec for the next open GL update.

Ok mr game programmer what does the PS3 use? Do you even know what the compiler is called? Does you have shader compilers also? Can you program the cell in C++ or any other languages? IS C++ an API LOL. Also the PS3 uses open GL any way and it is currently behind direct x but it's gaining. Does the PS3 have security and does development still happen on the PC? If so then it uses a API and like I said before if the SONY guys have made their own special API that is not just a security measure with a bunch of other APIs then it would be in their best interest to share the update. The SONY games may be impressing the fans but there are many developers who are not impressed yet.

This is sort of like putting a chip with vector units against a normal CPU. The example would be a professional GPU verses the same CPU, in most cases the GPU would win because of the extra stuff it has and how it is set up, but you would never say the GPU is faster bar none than the CPU.

obviously you ps3 fanboys just want to justify your purchase here but whatever, ill try and knock some sense into you. As ps3 fanboys or console fanboys would not know is that pc components are not universal. What i mean by that is that developers have to program the games for that platform of a component. For example, with graphics cards. On the last remanent for pc, a normal graphics card gets about 5 FPS on the highest settings. The second best graphics card in the world only gets 3 FPS. Do you know why, it is because the developers did no t program the game to utilize the 2 in 1 crossfire setup. So it had to use its raw backup power basically to play the game. It is the same example for this. Obviously a program or game that is made specifically for the ps3 will run way better on ps3. They probably didn't even program the test that they used for multi core possibility so the i7 was probably running off one of its cores. So if you multiply the 18 FPS by the 4 cores that the i7 has. it would really get 65+ FPS. The truth is the i7 on a raw computing test would beat the ps3 probably 10 fold and probably even more than that.

Another thing is the ps3 uses a cell processor which is basically a hybrid between a cpu and a gpu. I bet when they did the test they weren't even using a GPU for the i7 which would explain it all. A CPU is for everything while the cell processor is for high mathematical calculations or what would be games. i bet with a decent GPU, the i7 would get 100+ FPS.

First of all, I've been a lurker on here for the longest time, and I've read so many of these PS3 vs. XBOX arguments on which one is better. I'm a gamer at heart, but engineering and technology is my passion. I have a degree in both mechanical and electrotechnology working towards a masters and doctorate in both. and let me tell you that the ps3 is one of the most advanced technologies out there to date. This is just the beginning of parallel processing and microprocessing technology and I don't understand why there are so many haters out there that don't even know what this means to mankind and us gamers. The cellbe is leaps and bounds beyond anything out there right now and it is only improving. The cell be not only limits it to being used in television sets and video game consoles, but it is being considered to be used to almost anything and everything such as biomechanics(bionic arms/legs that replicate human movement). Believe me when I say this, but there are a lot of scientists and companies out there creating gargantuan amounts of buzz to using this technology in the advancement and evolution of mankind. This is only the first step. Sony knows they are sitting on a goldmine with this technology. So if you don't own a PS3 yet, I suggest you get one, or you are truly missing out. And for the person who metaphorically described the cellbe as the doctor/surgeon as the PPE and nurses/instruments being the spu's, I couldnt have described it any better myself. The XBOX 360 has nothing on the computing power of the cellbe, and if you deny that, you are symptomatically delusional, that's a fact.

plz fanboy go to Anandtech and check out a CPU benchmark, and notice how they have a benchmark for encoding, write & read, and gaming. Take note that some CPU's do encoding better than some CPU's and some do gaming better but suck in encoding.

alright the Ps3 has the upper hand in the power department hands down. We knew this from day one despite all the 360 fans negligible knowledge of there own system. But where is all this power going. Killzone 2...Ok, i consider my self a pretty hardcore gamer and I got over the graphics and such pretty quick once i realized that i rather play COD4 than Killzone 2.

Showboating power is great, but its like showboating a touchdown when you are sitting inside a 10 ton tank. No work, no dedication, just raw power. You just sit back and watch the pretty show with no full feeling.

You really need to do your research. GPUs now days are built to do that. Developers are realizing the GPU's potential in the conversion and calculation department. That is why you can use Nvidia's latest line of GPU to convert movies, its faster than using your CPU. But that goes to show you that Technology evolves. so As for your comparision it is comparing Apples to oranges. I can easily say my Quad can Smash my brothers 1.6 GHZ cpu. But i can equally say the i7 can "smash" my quad.

The cellbe can run a "packet" of super or hyper pi using 1 spu, meaning it can run 7 hyper pi's in parallel, its not all about clock speeds, its about the amount of work it can do in parallel. Anyone who read the article will have to acknowledge that some amazing leaps of illogic have been made by the author of the headline and the multitude of drooling ps3 diehards that have resulted in this crazy famnboy thread.

The truth of the matter is that the cell was made specifically to decode bluray movies.
Thus, it will be naturally faster at that kind of task.

The benchmark that gave rise to the headline was a new iteration of a bluray/H.264-Videos video encoding tool, which, unsurprisingly, runs very well on the processor which was desgined for streaming HD movies - the cell.

Hundreds of PS3 fans now believe in their hearts that the cell is indeed faster than the i7, which is unbelievably sad.
The truth is, that given any of 100 other benchmarking tools, the cell will fall woefully short, and not only against the i7!

Back in late 2006, I got my first "next gen" console, an Xbox 360. A white 20GB "premium" model. This was roughly a year after it came out and it had a decent enough lineup when I was used to PS2/Xbox. The 360 was amazing but no joke...I really wanted the PS3 more. I dreamed about the day it would come out and when it finally did, I gawked at the incredibly high price tags ($499 for stipped 20GB, $599 for the 60) and lack of quality games at launch. In 2007 I was rocking my 360 and became a huge Xbot. 2007 was the "Year of the 360" and it was on top on the world it seemed. Good games, unbeatable online, it delivered. When I heard news that Sony was changing up the PS3 by dropping the 20GB and reducing the price and then discontinuing the 60, I bought the last 60GB on my local Best Buy's shelf. It was August 2007, in the thick of the 360's hay day and probably the lowest point in the PS3's lifetime.

To cut this story short, PS3 has come a VERY long way since the day I bought it. Xbox 360 has kind of stalled since 2007 while PS3 has made strides to become the console we all know it can be. It now has vastly superior games 360 and online is damn near par. What's more, the PS3's future looks super bright. I never thought I'd see the day my PS3 collection would outgrow my 360's but it has and will continue to put the distance.

Well that's just incorrect. From 2007 to 2008 worldwide PS3 sales were up 35%. Now, so far this year sales are down approx 20% worldwide as we're in the midst of the greatest economic slump since the great depression, but to spin this like it's something wrong with the PS3 and not the slowdown in consumer spending is misleading.

Now, as for games - I personally think the PS3's games are superior. There are certainly more games that I want to play - but my tastes are going to be different then someone else's so that just boils down to personal preference. What I do know is it's nice to be able to play games on solid hardware. Being on my 4th 360 and having always taken excellent care of my hardware I don't like gaming in fear that another console is going to die on me, so I'll lean towards my PS3 simply because it doesn't have that rather glaring fault. I'll take the odd blurry texture in one out of 10 games over not being able to play that games due to faulty hardware any day. And playing 100% of the game as it was intended without subscription fees for online play is always something that shouldn't be overlooked by anyone.

Console sales are down, software sales are down - and the only reason the 360 still is slightly up from last year is the price cut. Given the boost the 360 had since the price cut - the momentum has dramatically slowed down due to the slow in consumer spending. There's no denying that. Every analyst on the face of the earth has pointed out that the games industry isn't as recession proof as we had thought. And currently the 360's worldwide lead this year is only 200,000 consoles over the PS3. At this same time last year the PS3 had over a million lead over the 360 and we all know how that turned out.

As for the multiplat thing - this isn't 2007. Let that myth die. Let's have a look at recent multiconsole releases based on metacritc scores - not some fly by night comparisons by no names. Let's just grab the first 10 multiconsole releases on the site and see which version the majority of the critics scored higher on average.

Cherry pie, anyone that says the 360 has a sphisticated gpu is living about 4 years in the past. And compared to the ps3's it isn't anything to write home about.... Both gpu's in each system run at the same speed. Shaders are what the 360 gpu has over the ps3, but the differences are very hard to make out visualy, and it's dx10 compatible but again I can't see a difference. Also if you go into ram, ps3 has faster ram powering the cpu that can be shared with the gpu, so the resources ARE there, people like to spin that.
The ps3 on the other hand does have a "sophisticated" cpu, and to me that is what I want if i'm a gamer. Because everyone wants the awesome physics and a.i. that requires one. Plus the ps3 can spit out intense graphics at the same time, we are all witnesses.

Sorry but when you get multithreaded command buffers driving the RSX, that will be good news, except it cant happen because the Cell has only one proper chip that is capable ofdriving the RSX. These DX11 features will start hitting game produced late this year. You have been warned.

@below, it's not DX compatabile, you cant simply slot DX11 into the 360, it's imposisble, however some vitalc omponants that help DX11 run multicore CPU's on single GPU's have been implemented. Componants of DX11, not the entire dam thing.

This upgrading is why Epic keep telling you the 360 aint tapped out yet. The firmware is enabling some new things, like multiple core directing commands to the GPU.

This is so true and it makes people not want to even be associated with them. I must admit even though I work with some of these HD systems I can not bring my self to buy a 360 or a PS3. I wish there where more fans like you that see this. These type of fans really do annoy me because they sound like PC fans, the ones that loved to hype with out understanding what they are hyping.

Because the cell set up broke the lazy use of the normal API's developer where force to extend their code to the SPUs and force a form of differed rendering which in fact is the first glimmer of a software based render-er on the HD systems before every thing was being sent most to the GPU for work.

The 360 was design so well to use MS tools that most people feel as though it's silly to do what GG did with killzone 2. Also MS is not a great hardware manufacture so we all see the out come of RROD. SONY is exactly given a free pass either. IBM and SONY know codecs, that is their main claim to fame every since the MP3 and minidisk fights.

Yet SONY and IBM have not idea as when it comes to true silicon based graphic acceleration. If some very small thing would have been changed and SONY was not pressure by the very gamer who support it now to release this tech in it's current state it could have been way more powerful. Power is best seen when it totally eclipses the competition.

Another thing is You guys do realize intel chips will continue to be in Apple systems and IBM did make the cell and Apple did turn that chip down because of it's flaws. That is not a downer though.

The situation is way more complicated than the fan boys here want to acknowledge. SONy's power from the PS3 comes from the fact that they actually have a head start in making new engine with the new ideas that are appearing, while xbox 360 developers are just trying to keep UT3 from breaking their code. I will give props to sony because art is very important to them yet they still are lacking in interaction design, or game play. SONy has the talent to be a nintendo on their own terms, which means they could sell 18 million copies of a game yet MS has totally made them follow a different road and it's fans only distract them from their goal also.

The Power of SONy is not necessarily in their tech it is in their focus. They need to focus more on game play now and art. The fans need to be more receptive to experimentation. They also need more fans they are not side tracked by these tech fights. These type of things are great for video card people and PC gamers but console are closed systems that are gimped in most cases in order to meet a certain price.

Right now the entire industry just tried to reach the idea of overwhelming it's fans with effects rather than addicting the to game play. So far all gamer want is online play.... then they get bored and look for another game to play online, Basically online play is making people look for that rather than great game play now.

Sorry for the long post but there are some huge problems in gaming right now and you will see most of them here at N4G. It's like a giant gamer social experiment gone wrong LOL. All I've ever heard from 360 owners is trash talking about the PS3. Always one of my favorites they use to say in the early days. "A over sized paper weight". To Capitaloneplayer a lot of developers don't know how to use the PS3's power yet. A lot of developers don't even use all of the cell processors. This isn't coming from some virgin loser fanboy. I am just a die hard Sony fan who loves and repects the system I have grown up with. PlayStation has done it all. RPG's, FPS's, rhythm games, action adventure. You name it PS did it or created it.

The cell doesn't have anywhere near the amount of power as the Core i7. If you looked up some actual specs and benches taken from the cell's manufacturer you see that it's not incredibly powerful.

And encoding speed =/= overall speed.

it is not the GPU and RAM that kept it from doing that, its the lack of an actual CPU. Basically what the ps3 has is a graphics card that has the ability of a processor. basically it is an all in one type thing, there is no need to have a good amount of ram, a good GPU, or a good CPU, when all you need is a cell processor that is only good for single floating point operations. That is why it is so hard to develop for the ps3. The xbox 360 is said to be easier to develop on because it has an actual graphics card, CPU, and RAM. So the developers can have an easy time converting the PC version to xbox, that is why you see a lot of games that are for both xbox and PC. Its just not practical to think of the ps3 as a computer because it really is only good for a handful of tasks. Think of the difference between the ps3 processor and a CPU as the difference between markers and colored pencils. If you are trying to color a coloring book, the coloered pencil (ps3) is good for coloring those slim and narrow parts of the picture. But the markers can color most of the picture a lot faster than the colored pencil. Also i was talking about a fat marker.

drewsny.... you really have no idea what you are talking about man. RSX is by far an "actual graphics card" (it's a geforce 7900 modified). Cell is a CPU by every definition of the word, but it's cores are capable of helping RSX render it's graphics when available. and PS3 has the exact same amount of RAM as 360. It's harder to code for because it has 8 cores instead of 2-3, and sony's software tools for developers were terrible when ps3 launched and still aren't the best in the business (more the latter than the former).

I didn't need a poorly translated article to tell me that Cell is better than any other processor out there when it comes to certain multimedia tasks, namely video encoding. we've known this since 2005, when Sony first went on about how PS3 could decode 12 1080p streams at once in real time.

Now that Fox brought LP2 in, I want to say that LP2 is a prime example of 360 limitations, rather than prove its power.

LP2 is being developed with the 360 hardware in mind, and it shows off. Capcom got a very beautiful game running on (textures, character modeling are really good) BUT the water simulation in LP2 is just laughable, as are their particle effects, smoke, explosions.

360 failure to simulate physics based interactions is 360 main weakness (at least at first sight), and that is exactly where the CELL excels when devels begin to feel used to the arch. More improvements are on the way

Capcom is not developing LP2 with a custom game engine. They are still using the MT frameworks engine, which is a multiplatform engine that has some favor with 360. We still don't know what 360 can pull off. I'm sure the PS3 can edge the 360 when it comes to physics, but only by a small amount.

This is so infuriating. When PS3 was considered a disappointment in 06, 360 fanboys were rubbing it in the faces of PS3 owners, but now PS3 fanboys are doing the same thing without any shame.

If only Microsoft funded the creation of a proprietary engine, then we could truly see what it could do. I'm not saying it will beat Sony, but I really think the 360 can do things that will satisfy all gamers, if only MS tries.

it all depends on the developers, last gen mgs2 ran better on ps2 than xbox although xbox was more powerful. the ps2 could put out some pretty impressive graphics like god of war 2, while other games depended on artstyle instead of being tech heavy.

i can also see similarities to genesis vs snes
snes was harder to develop for and had graphics which looked worse than on the genesis but the snes could put out better sounds than that of the genesis. just as the ps3 can support better sound than that of the 360 the games look slightly less as great but are hardly noticable.

sony's in house devs know how to utilize the ps3 to a very good extent and will further improve as each of their games are released just as they did for ps2.

dont be so harsh about the graphics, current devs have had a year headstart on the 360 and the differences in the games are hardly noticable.

I bought my 360 because it was the best bang for the buck, not to mention xbox live being the best out of all three online systems with the most users. I'd even love to have a PS3 as well, mainly because it would be most ideal for a blu-ray player and I'd be able to play mgs 4. But thats about it

In the end it doesn't really matter because both the 360 and ps3 can handle any of todays games, and you would really need to have like 50/20 vision to be able to see a difference. And from what I have heard some games look better on different consoles.

This whole thing is more about the future capability of the consoles, the 360 is reaching it's limit and the PS3 still has the space for a good few years before it reaches its peak.

What people forget about the PS3 is that the Cell is used not only for the graphics but also to process nice gameplay touches like the citizen memory from inFamous. When games are optimised for the Cell they cannot be made for the 360 because it can't handle it, there's no "Yeah but it might be able to" it just can't.

The PS3 is much more than a blu-ray player, the games that have come out for it imo are much better. Aside from Gears of War and Mass effect there aren't any games I'd want. I have Left4Dead on PC when it came out on Steam so I don't really need a 360. Ultimately I decided to save my money and buy a PS3 since I can get most of the 360 games on PC cheaper anyway.

The PS3 came out a year after the 360, after about 6 months the technology improves a great deal so anyone waffling on about the 360 being as powerful is either too faithful to Microsoft to know what's happening or they just don't want to admit they should have waited.

Games that are optimised for the Cell will be far better in terms of what they can push through at any one time. inFamous for instance uses the cell to manage the population so they remember whether you saved them or blew up their car earlier on.

Hopefully this has settled it, the 360 is not equal to the PS3 and never has been, multiplatform games developed using the 360 are fundamentally limited by the 360. PS3 exclusives optimised for the Cell are able to really push the hardware further than they would be able to on the 360. The cell can manage advanced lighting effects, like those in Killzone 2 and as I've been saying for well over a year the 360 graphics are basically given a dodgy bloom effect to give the illusion they look good, the texturing may be good but the lighting isn't at all...

Obviously this article is misleading to a whole lot of you who don't understand the technical side of things. The PS3 Cell has always been blindingly fast when used for calculations that are done with tight math intensive code that does not need a lot of memory. Think about Folding at Home... Tight code, lots of math, not a lot of memory usage.

On the other hand video games are not small tightly coded programs and they use tons of memory for textures. The memory architecture has always been a kick in the nuts for the PS3. Sony skimped on memory to keep costs down because of the expensive Blu Ray drive. This is the great equalizer that makes the PS3 slower than the 360 unless you go to great effort to customize the code for the PS3. That's why up until recently most games on multi platforms always looked and performed better on the 360. Programmers are finally figuring out how to get around the poor design and develop games that are starting to live up to the potential of the PS3. It hasn't been easy though! And it might be too little too late.

Think of it this way: the PS3 is like a Toyota Corolla with a 600hp V12 engine from a Ferrari. Even if you could somehow install big enough tires to get all that power to the ground, you'd just blow the transmission or snap the drive shaft.

The PS3 would have been a MUCH better game machine with 1GB of dual ported RAM and no Blu Ray drive. Sony was stuck between a rock and a hard place because of the price of the Blu Ray drives. Sure they won the battle over HDDVD, but at what cost to the PS3? Now that stand alone Blu Ray players are getting cheap, the PS3 sales will only continue to fade away.

Coolrah your getting at a point here. Devs are what make a system shine. If you remember the xbox 360 games in the beginning looked horrible and played even worst. The 360 is a totally different box now. The system did not get any more powerful. Just like the cell the 360 can be optimized more. Another thing is epic is not know for their code efficiency yet MS bank rolled them. On top of this epic is know for supporting systems that threw a big dumb hammer and went with power rather than efficiency. The PS3 did not win many awards for this either but it was and still is way more efficiency at decoding codecs whihc SONy has always been one of the big players of.

MS software development flaws are actually showing more when you look at their mentality. MS is a standards gate keeper and any thing out of that box is shunned or just not given support. MS actually made a very powerful box with some great ideas in it but seriously the development pipeline and the actually hardware where not really truly design to maximize this potential. It seemed to be set up just to get out of the box as soon as it can. Ms is a little too desperate to win this gen and the same goes for SONY in a way.

SONY was right in making developers figure out their new way of doing things yet SONY just need to involve Nvidia a little earlier and intel would not even be talking about Larrabee right now. Making people figure out things also helps them incoporate new techniques or old ones that where not fully used but they where great ideas. Yet they are wrong when it comes to pricing for developers and gamers. It's true the dev systems can be bought for a barging now, yet now developers have to deal with the ever rising elitism of the graphic whores. On top of that you will have mostly big developers trying to push these systems. This happened partly because of the type of gamer they have attracted and the type they have actually pushed away.

You don't have a very large amount of true old school gamers on the PS3 right now. If they are old school they would be pretty unhappy with the current catalog of games on these systems. This is why the PS3 is not reaching PS2 numbers and possibly why trade in are hurting the PS3. It's spilling out as frustration in the blogs also and finger pointing.

If you remember you could find lots of types on gamer on the PS2 but if you look at the fights and arguments about why they love their systems you would think these where video card owners instead of console owners.

The truth is SONY and MS can only learn from this gen. I'm sure nintendo is. Part of the problem with those two comes from the fact that they are never really critical of them selves, at least in the open and we never get to hear what they think about the industry and their true purpose.

I wasn't. I still love my 360 and will support it in any way/shape/form. The deal is though, the PS3 DOES (in my opinion) have better EXCLUSIVE games. When your lineup consists of game changers like MGS4, Uncharted 2, inFAMOUS, MAG, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, etc etc it's hard to deny that the PS3 is building a lot of momentum. I buy most multi-plats on 360 because as we all know, developers are lazy and refuse to put much effort into the Cell and prefer the PC-like architecture of the Xbox 360 so a lot of games do indeed end up looking and performing better on 360 in that respect. But honestly, when was the last time Xbox 360 really brought something new to the table? I can only think of two XBOX 360 ONLY GAMES (not PC) that have done much...Halo 3 and Gears 2. Now I'm a pretty big racing fan so maybe you can toss Forza 2 in there but still, it's just the way I see it. They need to pump out more first/second party games that are totally exclusive to Xbox. Alan Wake and Splinter Cell are never coming out, I've given up on them personally.

Comparing the ps3 cell to the i7 in such a skewed benchmark of video processing is like comparing a kid on the street who has dedicated his whole life to learning 3 pointers to Koby Bryant, Maybe, he might beat Koby in a 3 point shootout, but it doesn't mean he's a better basketball player than Koby, it just so happens that he focused more on shooting but what about the other things? And also, it would be more logical to pit him up against an nba player who's better at 3 pointers rather than all rounder like Koby who excels at other things

Notice how in the article, they didn't dare compare the GPU to the cell since the GPU in pcs are the ones designed to process the videos, It's all about functionality and who does what, The cell can do a lot of GPU type tasks, So technically, it is functionally better than a conventional processor, but in totality it isn't, because those cpus weren't designed for those tasks so it's pointless throwing it at them in the first place, Heck, an i7 gets single digit fps when trying render simple polygons, Does that mean it sucks? No, it just means it wasn't designed to do something like that, that's what the GPU is for, So again if you want to look at the rendering and video processing capabilities of a ps3 versus a computer, you have to factor in the gpu

Also, it's 100% obvious that you haven't played Crysis at all, the fact that you try comparing it for Far Cry is just plain wrong, Far Cry 2 uses repeated algorithms to generate its massive world, Everything is repeated and generated, that's why enemies keep spawning every time you return to a given place, Nothing is truly dynamic, It's all prebaked and repetitive, You can't kill 2 people, travel 100 km and come back to find their bodies, That's where Crysis comes into play, Not only does it have superior physics and interactivity that dwarfs any other game, but it renders it on a large scale in real time with no procedural gimmicks or precooked/scripted effects, That's exactly why Crysis could not be done on consoles because doing such a thing requires massive memory to store all the dynamic happenings across the large map instead of simply resetting them or randomly generating them from a precalculated algorithm, On top of all that, it still manages to pull off global illumination, parallax mapping, full object motion blur, ambient occlusion, realtime dynamic self shadowing, fully destructible environments, god rays, advanced depth of field etc.

To show all this, I made a short HD video of me playing Crysis on my 3 year old GPU, 8800gtx released in 2006, Now i say this because this card is dated and discontinued and you can get $150 cards that are better today, so my gaming machine isn't exactly top of the line, Also the capturing software,fraps takes away 15 extra frames per second to process the video stream whiles recording, So it's a lot smoother when playing without the recording

Core i7 is built for pc's. It is meant to handle a lot of things at once, while the cell is meant to do things one at a time. Gaming processors can't be compared to pc processors.

Don't get me wrong when I say this, but this article is talking about video encoding, which the ps3 excels at because it has 7 spe's that are perfect for this job. Put the cell in a computer, and you have no more power than a Pentium 4 processer. The Cell excels at single calculations.

Overall, the cell is better doing tasks like hd video encoding, and better at providing calculations for folding@home because the ps3 is a monster calculator. Try calculating pi with the ps3... its most likely going to do it faster than anything out there. But Core i7 would be a monster processor for a pc because people do multiple tasks at once.

1. for multiplatform, its up to the dev to decide what main platform they want to build up from and it's usually the PC/360, therefore disregarding what potential the ps3 can do. A code that is written differently for another system will fall short on the other consoles resulting in poor porting.

2.Killzone 2, uncharted 1, heavy rain etc, how about the 360??????...................

3. their is a ps1/ps2 emulator on ps3, well atleast one of them. why would we want a 360 emulator when all of the Only on 360 exclusive eventually come to Ps3. So therefore i will say this...anything 360 comes out with, ps3 can emulate, but vice versa, now that is to be question. and a matter of fact, wheres the proof.

Based on everything I have seen and read the 360 is functionally the most powerful console for modern day game making in general. Lots of game developers have expressed this, but they are ignored.

The PS3 if coded for in a very particular way can put out some amazing graphics, but most developers will get better performance out of the 360. The 360 has a more powerful and efficient GPU, a much better memory architecture, more general purpose computing power and a smaller OS memory footprint.

The proof is in the pudding. The vast majority of multiplatform games look or perform better on the 360. And even when you compare the exclusives I think the 360 has a slightly better consistency of high quality graphics. The PS3 has a few exclusives that display outstanding graphics--namely Uncharted and Killzone 2, but most are more average in graphics. Resistance 1 & 2, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, and Infamous for example, are all nice looking games, but to any objective observer they clearly are no better-looking than many, many games on the 360.

Many reputable sources--from John Carmack to the designer of the two CPUs himself--have told us either that the two consoles are basically equal in performance capabilities or that the 360 is actually a bit more functionally powerful. I don't know why people ignore what they are saying and just jump to their own conclusions.

In the end though, what matters is what is actually achieved on the consoles, not theoretical performance capabilities. And from that perspective both consoles have some outstanding looking and playing games. Whatever differences exist between the HD consoles isn't much and surely isn't going to be much of a deciding factor for most gamers.

The 360 for graphics right now is falling behind. Killzone 2 and MGS4 are the graphics kings. And all the potential graphics king games coming out soon are all ps3 exclusive.

Even though the 360 has been out for a year, the ps3 still has gotten ahead.

And going on about multiplats means nothing if the ps3 has games which looks better than all the multiplats.

Its all good and well saying that these guys say this and that, but there are people who vouch in favour of the ps3. All of what they say is heavily opinionated ad so we can only tell from the actual games. And from that viewpoint the ps3 wins hands down...

For me it is about reliability more than losing a few frames per second from devs who dont want to bother maxing out the ps3. My ps3 never crashed while I played Oblivion. My 360 crashed hourly, and the failure rate is unacceptable to me. I wont buy another one. Graphics dont help me a bit if I cant get the game to play without freezing up on me. Just my opinion.
