Button config. of PlayStation Arc revealed

PS Uni writes: "Sony's full fledged answer to motion-control gaming beyond the Sixaxis will be on its way to the PlayStation 3 later this year with a healthy number of exclusive games. The system will make use of the PlayStation Eye, what we've previously nicknamed the 'Wand' and an additional wireless controller that's similar to the Wii's 'nunchuck'. We can now reveal the button configuration of each controller within the 'PlayStation Arc' set."

Sounds like a decent configuration.

sikbeta5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

It's Better than the wand-only and it's very good cuz it'll be like the device used in the E309, that was Really Really Better than the dil...wand...

Gaming FTW

Blaze9295164d ago

Well IF this is true then a sigh of relief is taken that they will be releasing a "nunchuck" and won't force us to use the Dual Shock 3 isntead.

Carl14125164d ago

So if the face buttons are below the analogue stick, how the hell to i press one and use the stick at the same time?

PirateThom5164d ago

The nunchuck (with the analogue) only has X and O, the wand has the big button and the normal buttons around it, as well as the trigger.

Fishy Fingers5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

Have you ever used a Wii? Thumb for the analog stick, fingers below for the buttons. Its set out in the natural way you'd hold something.

Danteh5164d ago

I heard there was a vibration button to use it as a sex toy, rite?

...

Carl14125164d ago

Thanks. I have used a Wii, but never used a nunchuck.

IdleLeeSiuLung5164d ago

It's good Sony listen to their customers and copied the Wii. Why re-invent something that already works really well.

Now let's see some innovative games for the Arc!!!

HolyOrangeCows5164d ago

"These occurences have apparently influenced Sony’s decision to produce a ‘nunchuck-like’ controller to support the Wand and make their answer to the Wii more useful for party and hardcore games"

I hope this is true. I don't want to have to hold the dualshock just for the directional pad and L buttons.

DaTruth5164d ago

There is; It's called, stick it in the right place and have the game character get pummeled in whatever game you're playing!

mikeslemonade5164d ago

Sounds like a winning combination.

randomwiz5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

The wii doesn't work well...

The the nunchuck is so unergonomic. Playing SSB Brawl or MKW hurts your hand after a while, because the analogue is so hard, and just a terror to use.

The remote itself has badly placed buttons. I can't reach 1 + 2 or the dpad without adjusting my hand from where its positioned over A. Plus its heavy for one hand.

PaLaK-5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

So Basically, you buy a PS3, you have top exclusive games, a top blu ray player, a beast of games console and you have a wii built in, and you have PSN which is like Xbox live.. You don't need a wii or an xbox except for the xbox/wii exclusives of course if you have a PS3. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better!

mastiffchild5164d ago

I've moaned long(there's a shock) and hard about the putrid answer to the nunchuck controller problem that Sony used with the one handed DS3 at TGS. It didn't work, looked crap, kids couldn't use it and would be uncomfy for even the largest of hands as well as being the least ergonomic and pikeyest thing ever made by Sony.

Being honest i'll be hugely relieved if and when this gets shown to be true(and he HAS really staked his rep on this one)as it's Sony's only hope. Without it Wands were dead. Now, maybe, we'll get to see if Sony can manage the FPAS and Lightsaber controls we expected from the Wii. Ifd they can, and the FPS could compete with K/M for accuracy and beat it for immersion then MC could see a bit of a true gaming rebirth. Seriously, done well I think it still could beat out dual sticks for shooters easily. RE4 was best on the Wii and RE5 played like it and without Sheva(just a dream of mine)would be great. I even like the idea of KZ3 supporting it as long as they implement it as well as they would if it were the ONLY control method available.whatever, I want to find out how accurate the things are and without a second,. analog stick holding controller I wouldn't have bothered after trying the DS3 in one hand and finding it a joke-and that's without worrying about buttons as well as the stick.

Bigpappy5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

Wii games are not going to buy a PS3 to play wii style games. This control scheme will be sold to PS3 owners who don't mine having some motion control. Wether it is better or not is irrelevant, are the wii user will see it as the same thing they have on the wii. Natal will still have a better at attracting some of the wii crowd, because it offers a completely different option. One that will peak their interest because they don't see a remote. Its like a magic show. When they can just get in front of the TV and start to jump around and run in place for their 15min workout, with out ever having to touch a remote, they will be ready to buy. Nothing in your hands is a major selling tool for casual gamers and non-gamers, many of whom still did not buy a wii.

@ mastiffchild: I agree with you on the importance of this addition (if it is true). DS3 + wand would have guarantied failure for the wand.

shadow27975164d ago

I don't understand the description at all. It doesn't sound like all the buttons are accessible from the same position. That's a no-no.

So if a game tells you to press X (or O), how do you know which one to press? Do both controllers send the same signal when those buttons are pressed?

Second of all, are they linked like the Wii? (I hope not). Does the Nunchuck have a ball and accelerometers? (I hope so).

I'm skeptical until I see pictures, this doesn't sound great.

Coffin875164d ago

Maybe the configuration is OK but I am really asking myself what gamers need this for.. I don't really think I will be sticking with it.

ll_UNDERSCORE_ll5164d ago

I hope they can incorporate MLB the show on the list either 10, or 11 down the line.

edgeofblade5163d ago

#1 thing going for Arc: buttons. I really think Arc is going to be the better motion tech, even if Natal happens to be the more popular.

I'm getting Natal and Arc, unless I try one in the store and it just blows. With the rest of the generation riding on this tech, both sides know the stakes.

dabri55163d ago

Motion controls need to go away. I just haven't seen them used in a fun and creative way yet. It's all too gimmicky.

PinkUni5163d ago

are you kidding? this is exactly the kind of stuff gamers need

gaming is about competition between players, this thing is 1:1 ratio with the real world, that means that the controls become a higher resolution.

think of it like this, would you rather use a dpad or a analog stick to look around in an fps? of course you would pick an analog stick because they are much more complex and have slower to faster speeds for looking, not to mention multiple directions

now when you introduce something like the ark, you not only have different speeds, but different angles, different depth and the speed of the visualization is controlled by your body movements.

its higher resolution controls

dabri55163d ago

It's the wii with prettier games. Unfortunatly that's what they are trying to do. Grab some of the wii's market. That more than means more garbage wii type games.

They listend to us when we said it needed a nunchuk thank god. Demons souls and Heavy rain patched for motion controls make it happen sony.

sinncross5164d ago

I expect to see Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet being shown at GDC. Both are unique titles which Sony have tried to push: showing them off with motion controls will only give both some extra marketting which is a good move.

There is also talk of Killzone 3 being shown in addition to it having Arc support: could make for a nice reveal but I really want to see what this Ape Escape launch title is going to be like... Ape Escape enters the HD era is too potentially cool to overlook.

CrimsonFox135164d ago

Hell yeah! Demon's souls with the tech of the sword and shield and the bow and arrow from the E3 demo would be great!

DaTruth5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

Demon's Souls requires two analog sticks and dual wielding wands! It will be impossible now.

Edit: Maybe if they had head tracking, that can read small turns so you don't have to take your eyes off the screen. Look slightly to the right and the character turns till you center your head again! Up and down would work the same.

Valcore015163d ago

Adding it to Demon Souls would make that game even better. If they officially announce that then I am definitely going to get one. Now they just need a list of games and a picture and I will be set. Anyone know the release date?

Ravage275163d ago

definitely Demon's Souls 2

jack_burt0n5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

they didnt listen to just having an analog on the arc using 2 for a dualshock setup :(

edit:
First off i was thinking about them being sold in pairs as well, and also for demons souls style setup u would have had left arm 1:1, right arm 1:1, analog movement and analog camera............ but would have probably made casuals burst into flames

sinncross5164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

I dont see how that is a bad thing... the Arc controller itself can be used for camera movement in a similar way it is used on the analog on a dualshock.

While I get the dualshock option you are talking about, I don't think it will be as feasible as an optional dualshock as you may think. Still I get what you meant.

Raf1k15164d ago

Agreed but the problem with using the Arc for panning around is that you can only move it so much in one direction before you end up facing away from the TV. With a mouse you can pick it up off the surface and re-place it somewhere that allows you to keep panning which isn't something you can do with the Arc.

hatchimatchi5164d ago

Camera control has been an issue when it comes to motion based games. The lack of a second analog stick is what it comes down to.

mrv3215164d ago

Analogue stick for the win... every controller for the next generation consoles have analogue sticks except... never mind.

Anagolgue sticks ARE useful.

Natal = Next Gen

PS3 wand is just pure wii copy and that is pathetic low life's Sony. Sony and Sony fan boys make me sick there is no word to describe what they are.

techie5164d ago

They are human beings like you, who don't seem to have anything better to do than to pine over a piece of hardware, defend it and attack the competition - just like you.

digger185164d ago

Sony fan boys make you sick???? WTF!!!

You are in a PS3 only thread and you have the cheek to call out PS3 fan boys

DigitalHorror815164d ago

Seriously, you come into a PS3 thread praising the Natal with nothing to back it up? Get the hell out.

rezzah5164d ago

Natal is just like the Eye Toy thats been out since last Gen. But nooo Natal isnt copying anything >.>

Marty83705164d ago (Edited 5164d ago )

LAGTAL = Epic Fail

BTW I can think of plenty of words that will describe how you and other bots will look like playing LAGTAL, 'retarded' springs to mind.

Sorry, but pretending to use a plate as a steering wheel, is a stupid idea.

Jump Out, Play B3yond

ZombieAutopsy5163d ago

LMAO @ GR8 1

Natals' tech isnt anything new at all, and the fact they took out the processor makes it even more like an eye-toy. Funny thing is imagine if they started utilizing the CELL processor with the PsEYE....i bet you would get alot better games out of that than Natal using the Xbox's CPU.

Now that being said i want both Natal and Arc to fail as motion type controls are for kids and monkeys and most of you are stupid anyways because you're most likely the same people who bashed the Wii for its "gimicky" controls and now are praising your console of choice for using gimicks too....ohh yea i forgot this is N4G.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia3h ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator2h ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies1d 9h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken1d 4h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing691d 20h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker1d 20h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt1d 7h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken1d 4h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
