1st of all, demand for PS3 will go up ALOT, if people will have the possibility to download the games they don't think are worth buying, yet do seem like a bit of fun to play. For many, this is always a good reason to purchase a console they otherwise wouldn't have bought, and these are also the people who otherwise wouldn't have bought those games they might now download.

2: Blu-ray isn't region-free yet. With this hack, maybe it is, and hopefully now I'll be able to import Dexter on blu-ray, cause it hasn;t been released on BR in Europe, nor is there any news it will be.

You think they will let you get away with 25gb download? When the piracy starts to affect the games they will just swap single layer blu-ray disks to dual layer 50gb ones and fill them with ghost/copy/blank data.

So its more or less likely to be a 50gb per game. That would take ages with my connection and pretty much render the internet "unusable" for that period (most of the bandwidth would go for the download).

actually the method to counter piracy would be most effective to restrict network bandwidth speeds from normal consumers and increase the size of all games with blank data. No1 with any sanity left starts to download 50gb files with less than 10mbps bandwidth.

If it were 100% we would have it hacked by now, but it's not fully hacked, hackers still have to find a way to understand what this port does and how games take advantage of it.
What I know is, when you download a patch, that port exposes valuable information of that patch, making it vulnerable to hacking, but having BURNED GAMES, of COPY of GAMES, that's not going to happen with a simple server hole. You would need access to another part of the system to do that.

While this is true do you realize how long it would take to burn games? Not to mention compile all the data. Also removing the copyright protection on the disc. It has to burn slowly because the PS3 Blu Ray is slower at reading then a DVD player because there is so much data! I stated about two to three years ago that the only way to hack the PS3 or implement non-native code was to bypass or disable temporarily the on-die security method (the SPU dedicated to the hypervisor), it looks like he is on the right track, but as much as I would like to see a Dreamcast emulator on the PS3 (I have the original games on their respective GD-ROMs before you ask), I know that I cannot have that without the possibility of piracy on the platform. Homebrew is great, but the side-effects and collateral damage far outweigh the good(Piracy, custom virus algorithms, system instability, account and identity theft, future incompatibility etc). As of right now there are laws being passed through and by the Geneva convention, that would change the course of piracy, and the punishments associated with stealing Intellectual Property. I say let them pirate, as it will be hilarious once they see the consequences for their actions in the future and the amount of heartache they have brought on themselves. Most pirates act with the delusion that they are untouchable.... As for this, I would have to see a full-blown implementation before I say whether it's 100% or not.

as far as i know his exploit still runs through linux on the other os and still requires glitching the memory with some code meant to overlap 2 memory sections causing a crash... thats how hes bypassed hypervisor...

however the encryption keys and such as far as i know is still out of his reach if i read it right his loaders and such would only work on otheros stuff and not allow gameos which is needed for games ... all it does it open up homebrew for the linux side and since the slims lack the otheros it shouldnt go much further

I used a hacked X360 console and sold it.There is no fun in playing 20 pirate games....it's a strange proces of overconsumption.
There is no time in the world to play all games and with one minor detail you eject the game to play another.....untill there is no fun in playing games.

Bluray burners are still too expensive for me to start downloading PS3 games. Plus there's nothing really concrete yet and games won't be up for download in some time..

In the mean time I'll keep downloading 360 games which is cheap and it only makes sense since the overall quality of the majority of 360 exclusives is mediocre. At least the PS3 first party games I spend money on are worthy of the $60 due to its overall quality.

Firmware is not user-downgradable and you'd need to install the initial code under Linux, in concert with a hardware-enabling, and very unreliable glitch to swap out a segment of memory.

A. I would figure PS3 exclusives would be a sizable download for most people dripping it through torrents. Though going to the game-rental store Or heck. Gamefly. Pay 20 bucks for two games in at a time a month? Rip two, send 'em back. Get another two in about 2 days. One could easily spend 20 bucks on shipping to get about 15 games, instead of 350GB+ of bandwidth. Would look much less suspicious to your ISP. But that's still thwarted by problem B below.

B. Most pirates on the 360 simply own a laptop. You'd need a ballin' laptop to be able to BURN blu-rays. Desktops aren't much cheaper, with a BURNER running around $200.

C. The initial startup cost will probably scare people away, as blu-rays are 10-15 bucks a piece, coupled with the burner. You'll have to burn about 4-6 games to break even. Easy, but those numbers may fend off folks.

Luckily for me, I've got newsgroups. And I pay 41 bucks a month for 8 megs (though I hear folks are getting over 200 megs. What?). That's 3 25GB ps3 games in a DAY. That's IF there's no garbage-data scrubbing!

actually the spu code lock works like this

power on it loads the os.. a spe is grabbed randomly and told to run a piece of code in secure mode
this code is whats needed to make the machine run

while the secured spe is running it nothing can see or interfer with the spe or it wipes what its doing the code runnning is invisable to the rest of the system.

this code is checked and alowed to run via the root encrtytion key which is part of the cpu itself

but nothing gets to see the root key
Because of this hardware isolation, even the operating system and the hypervisor cannot access the locked up LS or take control of the SPE core. Therefore, a hacker who has gained root or hypervisor privileges is not a threat to an application executing on an isolated SPE. The supervisory privileges will not enable him to control the application, nor will it allow him to read or write the memory used by it. The execution flow and the data of the isolated application are safe.

This is not a hack by any means.

It's nothing but a hardware enabled memory glitch...which, with the rig shown in the pictures would work on ANYTHING with a chip in it and you still couldn't run any REAL code. "hacking" it while ON with the system locking up or being damaged more often than triggering the glitch is NOT A HACK.

In fact this is a pathetic excuse to claim a hack, and an embarrassing excuse to get some attention since the glory of fiddling with a few bits on an iPhone is now waning.
(by the way, you can unlock a cell with little more than a code entered on the devices numeric keypad, so please don't make me yawn more than you already have.)

Everything Geo (as in $1700 Cafeteria-Blue GeoMetro 3-cylinder) has claimed was already possible, right down to the homebrew & emulators with OtherOS/Linux installed.

The PS3 was already used for the claimed 'hacked cryptography' for years now, dubbed the "Crackstation" by agencies running an array of them for just this legitimate purpose!

This brings us back to the platform :
A Pre-$299 PS3 with OtherOS 2.6 firmware & Linux installed just to insert ANY initial code...Oh and don't forget wires soldered all over the OLD-NO-LONGER-AVAILABLE motherboard and a POWERED-ON-LIVE & unreliable glitch trigger!

Geo...if you are REALLY out there...if you are REALLY a hacker...if you've REALLY hacked the PS3...reply with the encryption sequence code in the SPU's.

Blu-Ray has been re-secured.

The studios can just update firmware and change the keys that's what they did last year when the encryption keys got hacked.

I haven't looked up to see if it has been rehacked or what.

Also it didn't crack every disk just certain ones that used that system or key.

Due to the size of most ps3 games, its not feasible to hack it for piracy. If one had a 1tb hard disk, well then you could simply rip all games and play them for free but you would still need to rent them. The 360 is the better option for hacking. Speaking of which,I'm flashing my drive right now. Simple ideology. Buy your games for PS3, get them for free on xbox 360. Microsoft has the most to lose but I can assure you, I don't need sleeping pills to sleep.

What most of you all are probably unaware of is that Comcast, which is probably 80% of your IP provider, can and absolutely will throttle your account if you DL in ecesse of your account.

Say you have 22mb service they give you a 250gb before they cap you off and boot you back to 1 to 4 mb service. Trust me... I know this all too well. A good friend of mine works in their CO office. Say you have 50mb service, like I got, they give you a max of 300 gb before they cap you back to 30 and then 320 before they cap you to 22 and then if you excede that they drop you back to 1 to 4.

So, even if you can DL Ps3 games you're only going to be doing it at the cost of the quality of your internet connection on a month to month basis. Sometimes, they don't even take you off the throttle. One guy was on it, yet paying for full service, for 5 months before he found out.

I can download 8gigs in just under 2 hours. A person could queue something like Killzone 2 in the morning before work and have it ready to play when the get home at night...

On the 360 often these games come out weeks early so people will still have it downloaded and beat by the time the game hits retail.. That is a very compelling reason for most to look past the file size.

People saying nobody is going to download even 25gig is fooling themselves.. Even at 30gig people will download it like crazy..

GeoHotz is just riding on his fame with the iPhone. His abilities are quite overrated according to the PCs Hacker communities. He took all the credit for the iPhone hacks which was more of a community collaboration. Besides, it was just a hacking of Apple's PDA, a mere phone.

Now he's crying wolf with physical glitches to get some attention, I doubt he can fully break the SPE encryptions by himself(Which is what matters). No real hacks then.

Only time will tell, my venture into the PC arena and what what I have observed points out that he is not quite capable as he claim to be.
