In Consoles, the Game Isn't Going Sony's Way

Joel Downs is the type of video game buff that Sony Corp. expected to fall for the PlayStation 3. The 32-year-old Culver City entrepreneur is tech savvy, loves his PlayStation 2 and has the money to afford an upgrade.

But Downs is holding out.

"There's no compelling reason for me to buy it," he said. "There aren't enough good games for it. And it's too expensive."

The PS2 has been a runaway hit and profit machine for Sony since its introduction in 2000. But its highly touted successor, the PS3, is off to a slow start, leading some game-industry insiders to question whether the consumer electronics giant will dominate this generation of consoles as it did the last.

C'mon, let's at least TRY to be open-minded. I think it's way too early to call this one. How was the 360 doing at the same point in its lifespan comparatively (keep in mind, there were no nextgen competitors for the 360 back then)? The PS2 has been strong for a LONG time, so we can all expect Sony to try to duplicate that successful longevity.

On the other hand, the 360 has an amazing online service and a headstart in terms of sheer number of games.

There are some good games on the pS3 right now with free online play and blu-ray capability as well as linux for technophiles to mess around. I think there is every reasons to buy. I am still mad about my 360 for scratching up my DVD this past weekend.

I have a space kept for one under my TV. I have a spare input on my TV longing for an HDMI cable to plug into it.

But Sony need to show me an experience that i cant get anywhere else.

And i know that a PS3 gives you a BlueRay player but who buys DVDS anymore? Nobody i know. Everyone downloads and either streams to their TV or burns it to DVD and upscales it in a normal DVD player or xbox 360. For a grand total of £0.15p for a blank DVD.

I've been playing video games since 1985 and I've never seen a game that made my eyes bleed. Saw some good games a couple of times.

i dont have a VCR. I stream 910 GB of video from my PC to a media player which i linked by HD components to my 32 inch LCD HDTV. My media player is also connected to my 360 via the rear USB and my 360 is also linked to my PC via ethernet and my TV via VGA. I can watch and control everything i have at the touch of a few buttons from my couch. Sound is fed into Divx compatible phillips home cinema system. (its only 5.1)

I view my TV from a distance of about 10 feet so its impossible to tell the difference between 1080P and 720P at that distance on a 32 inch. (human eye not being good enough)
So when i download 720P film and TV rips and stream them straight to my PC its impossible to tell the difference.

I have watched BlueRay in shops and it was nice.
But for the cost of a BlueRay movie vs my setup.
I think i prefer my setup.

I do still have a free HDMI port for a PS3 once that killer game is eventually released. Maybe it will be GT5 who knows.

My question is when the PS3 does have games and does drop in price what will anyone have to say then? Its only a matter of time before all the reasons people don't purchase one aren't there anymore. Time is Sony's only enemy right now. When the whole "price and not enough games" argument is gone it'll be interesting to see what happens. Just something to think about....If you are inclined to say the format war is over .... over 2000 more blu ray sales total....then you should also feel the console war is over....with millions being the difference...and 100's of thousands a month the difference.

My opinion is both the console and format wars are far from over. The end of this year should give us a better picture...but 2008 will the the final blow for both....It should be interesting.

The PS3 has 30 games out right now that you can go buy and some that are on the list that you have provided. You're are pretty much justifying a PS3 purchase if you don't already have a 360.

Because both systems have so many of the same games if you don't aren't into Gear but more into Motorstorm, and Lair (and bluray) then you should buy a PS3. If you're more into Gears and Halo 3 then you should buy a 360. Other than that, the other games are pretty much going to be shared between the consoles.

A few games will separate the systems. Most you'll find on both. If you don't want bluray and are interested in more games for the next 6months then you should buy a 360. If you want bluray and are interested in games that will almost forever be on one disk buy a PS3.

You could really go either way depending on what you're into and still come out a winner.

Sure..here is why I bought a PS3 instead of a Xbox 360

Games

- its called exclusives. Sony owns more studios then MS and Nintendo combined. That means more exclusive for the PS3. Games I want to play. Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, MGS4, GT5, FFXIII, Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Distruction, etc.

Hardware

- Xbox 360 has hardware problems. The failure rate is much higher then the industry 3%.

- I like the fact that Sony went with Blu-ray built in. Not only can I enjoy Blu-ray movies with my PS3 but it also offers developers more space then dvd.

- HDMI 1.3 for PS3

- Native 1080p support for games and movies.

- Standard HDD in every PS3 so developers can take advatage of the HDD for games unlike the 360.

- I can upgrade the HDD in my PS3 with any off the self 2.5" laptop HDD.

- More USB connectors for things like keyboard, mouse and headset etc.

- Blutooth wireless

- Build in Wifi

- Built in web browser

Backward compatibility - Again PS3 the winner compared to 360.

Operatiing System - Ability to install Linux

Online game play - Free

You said the casual gamer right? The casual gamer will want to get more for their money right? Why would a casual gamer buy a 360 unless they're buying a core?

A casual gamer would buy a Wii or a PS2. They wouldn't spend $400 on a gaming system if they're causal. They may spend $250 but would have a better deal for buying a PS2 which has more games than the (PS3 + 360)x 3!!

Plus a casual gamer would see that they are paying around $20-$25 for most PS2 games. Why pay $60 when you could pay $25?

A casual gamer may be into movies more than they are into games and would buy a PS3 because it is one of the most inexpensive devices that can play bulray disks as well as play games. It's a two for one, plus, they can play all the $25 dollar PS2 games on it.

Remember, a causal gamer would not spend as much as we would on a system so both the 360 and the PS3 would have to go down in price for someone who likes to play a game every now and then. It wouldn't be worth there money buy either one of the big dogs.

Blu-ray totals surpassed HD-DVD totals about three months ago, and continues to sell at an average ratio of just under 3:1 every month. Even the IGN story that EliteGamer was nice enough to link states "70-percent of Q1 HD-movie sales were thanks to Blu-ray".

Of course, the HD-DVD association expects old titles like the Matrix Trilogy to boost sales, while Blu-ray is going to get this summer's blockbuster hits like Spiderman, Shrek, Transformers, etc, and they're going to be format-exclusive.

Sony fans would like to believe VG charts...a non official source...and 360 gamers believe the many many many articles stating very very clear....As of the end of 2006...MS sold 10.4 million 360's...sure you can find MS haters on the net stating that its sold to retail.....but there is no proof of that. MS stated they shipped their 10 millionth unit at the end of November 2006. It would make total sense that over the christmas holiday they sold all the units they shipped...and then some.

We will know soon when MS releases its quarterly earnings....The total sales will be 12 to 13 million. Thats in May/June. What will the sony fanboys say then? There will always be doubt and denial from sony fanboys...But facts are facts....do I believe some guy ranting on the interenet about its "sold to retail"...or do I believe MS's financial reports that they supply to the IRS. Hmmmmmmm....thats a hard one.

and....BlazeXXL .... The ps2 was never 600 dollars....The ps2 launched at 300 and within a year or so dropped to 200. That is one of the major factors to its success....Price. With the ps3 starting at 600 and who knows if and when it could ever drop to 200....it won't be dominant with casual gamers. When the ps2 was priced at 300...the sales were slow....They only picked up when they hit the sweet spot of 200. The ps3 will never hit that sweet spot.

Back in December they were just under 8.5 million Xbox 360s sold. They then passed the 9 million mark in February I believe? Since then the 360 has been growing at a snail's pace, and finally crossed the 10 million-sold barrier about two weeks ago. If sony produces 1 sequel to it's list of established IP's, that would guarantee the company to stay afloat. The "lack of games" argument doesn't really hold unless we're talking about months or even weeks. Xbox played the Geow and Halo cards, and will soon use the couple of JRPG exclusives. Wii opened with Zelda. Sony played noone of their cards yet, not to mention new IP's being in development like 8 days, Little Big Planet, White Knight Story, etc.

I agree 100% that we need to give PS3 a bit more time to produce some killer games. However, look at it from a developer standpoint: I can produce a game for Xbox 360 or Wii, both easy to code for (minus the motion controls of course!) and with large install bases. Or I could make a PS3 game which will take me longer to make (if I really want to take advantage of the Cell) and, if numbers are anything, won't sell more than 500,000 copies.

Sony needs to start throwing some serious cash at developers. Especially since every non-first party dev has criticized Sony for producing an overly complicated architecture and having been really poor with development kit support.

I'd like to see PS3 succeed (if only for Japanese RPGs) but man, Sony hasn't listened to the industry or market AT ALL lately. They need to pull some serious damage control.

That guy does not realize in what position Sony is. In 3 years the PS3 will be the leading console for several reasons.
1.
Once they reach the 10 Million mark they will get most of the exclusive back and they will hame more great games in addition. Sony alone owns 16 studios(That is more than Microsoft and nitendo together) and the number is increasing.
2. Blu-Ray the extra data will make games longer and better.
3. The cell power has not even bee touched yet.
4. Only 20 Million next gen consoles have been sold(Nitendo not next gen but included) The PS2 sold over 120 Million consoles. Big support for Sony.
5. XBOX only selling good in the US.
6. PS4 will be realized 2 yrs after the XBOX 720 and we will have the same situation as we have now with the PS2( is is kicking 360 but)
7. Sony has the better strategy. They are not pushing the PS3 because they are making millions on the PS2 sales. Sony was right when they said next gen starts when they say it starts. They barely got going.
8. The 360 will be the better console for the next 2 years but after that it will go down like the original XBOX. People are going to say what if Microsoft did this and that and i got to say

How, in anyones eyes can this not be seen as good for PS3, considering it did all this with 2 other consoles for competition, a higher price, less games and all the FUD you can eat. VG Charts is a joke. About 6 months ago I followed that site for numbers....Until I realized many of the numbers never moved....ha ha ha ha...Sites like that are for entertainment puposes and they have no real way of knowing total sales in every terrirtory....The only real way to know is through the companies quarterly financial reports....SO we will know very very soon what the actual numbers are.

oh and the power thing. while resistance fall of man uses 17% of ps3's power and still looks really good, gears of war which looks amazing uses 100% of the 360's power says epic. thats an example of limitations. although i think its more bout the disk space when it comes to that. but thats another topic lol.

You want to see how the PS3 compares in sales after May to how the 360 sales were over the same time frame? Are you going to put an asterisk by that date and that says the 360 was not competing against the ultra hot selling Wii or another well established game system during the same time frame?

The 360 had the same luxuries as the PS2, free reign. The Wii has doen very well with competition and the PS3 has sold, but not as expected, yet still on pace with the PS2 without competition.

Our reasons for buying a ps3 are the same reasons to why its too expensive for most casual gamers to buy into...and from my experience...I see no gain in performace thusfar when I compare my ps3 to my 360.

With all the money you make....did you buy a 360 as well? I mean with the money that you and I make....We couldn't dare pass up on many of the 360 exclusives being released could we? I have 6 premiums and 1 elite networked in my house....The online gaming sessions with friends and family is unriveled.....The fun to be had is off the charts....While I realize I'm rare in the amount of money I spend on my hobby....I also realize...to a casual gamer....the 360 is a much better value than the ps3. A matter of fact...when I compare games and switch back and forth with friends....its very very clear which looks notibly better. The colors look deeper...the graphics have more fidelity...its just amazing to me. Because I wouldn't have expected that from the less expensive console.

TO be honest...The only way I see the ps3 overtaking the 360 is if the price drops to 300 or less. And I just don't see that happening. Sony would loose tons and tons of money on the hopes that gamers would choose it over the 360. But in my opinion thats their only hope of getting that main stream acceptance they recieved with their previous 2 conosles.

I agree. It's difficult to get 'stoked' about the PS3 when the Xbox's graphics look so much better (I'm not exagerating here, Gears of War looks way better than R:FOM). Need to burst your bubble. MGS4 is from Konami, not owned by Sony. MGS2 already has been on the original xbox. MGS3 was a bad game, thus also not released on the XBOX gladly.

They have shareholders. Shareholders want to see profit. The installed base for the PS3 isn't large enough to sell massive numbers. We see that with Resistance. 600k copies sold to just over 3 million users.

Gears of War, two months ago already on the 4 million copies sold on 11 million users. That means, over 1 million copies every 3 million 360 users. 1 out of 3 got this game. That's more then Resistance.

FFXIII same story. Square Enix is 3rd party. Can as easily come to the 360.

It's just which exclusives you like best for the rest, that's for sure. I think with the new IP's that MS has, the 360 is the best choice.

Already, it is quite apparent that PS 3 will probably not have the same lead as it had the previous generation. Is that a fact? Hell No! Well, simply put, your right! PS 3 hasd not been out for that long and its success/failure is similar to 360's during the same time period. BUT, that is exactly the point. Why in the hell do you think Microsoft released so early. I will tell you, to avoid having to face the ESTABLISHED market leader head on. As a result, 360 is finally picking up in terms of games, service, features, etc. while PS 3 is still confronting the whole "new console" dilema. THe average consumer does not care which console is doing better in RELATION to its competition a year ago. They pick the console with the best games, price, service, and thats it. AS it happens, 360, yes, had a slow start in its early years, but it could AFFORD to since it was the only next-gen console. Now the PS 3 comes out with all this comepetition and, the sales in America show this, people are more picky. THey pick the best console now.

I'll admit games play an important role, like Satanas said, but the average consumer who generally prefers PS 3 games are either gonna wait, like Joel DOwns, or buy the 360 to fill up the time gap. All in all, yeah the PS 3 is doing moderately well, but its competition is doing better and thats all that counts. This is not sports where everything starts out equal- this is the technology industry where new products have to beat or match its already established competitior (if not, why would people wanna buy it?)- Again I'm not saying which system will be the best, I'm saying the likelihood that PS will come out on top, the way it did w/ PS2, is slim. I think that the success of the Wii has hurt it and also that MS got it's act together with 3rd party development and that's a good thing for everyone.

The PS3 is built for the long run though. If many games start to be too large for dvd like Blue Dragon you will start to see the breaks put on the 360 and start hearing the 720 rumors start because it won't be able to keep up.

I think MS is betting on the fact that most games won't get that big too soon. If they're right they'll be in very good shape but if they're wrong they'll have to force most of their games on multi disk or risk loosing devs. They'd rather put out the 720 with a quad core than loose the devs. (starting to get off subject)

The PS3 is selling great!!! For not having any blockbuster titles out, seriously, it's selling well. Seriously, how well woul the 360 sales be without gears right now? Not as strong so expect the PS3 to pick up sales when Lair arrives and HS. 360 sales will definitely pick up when Halo 3 comes out.

If I go out and buy a Sony or Microsoft console JUST because I'm loyal to the brand, then what's their incentive to actually work for my money? You want Sony to shape up? Vote with your dollars. When Killzone 2 comes out, IF it is awesome (the first one was ok) then I'll slap down some Sony-lovin' dough. actually glitches did max out the 180:

1. The timeframe of developement. Do you remember the first time GOW was first shown to the world, ah i think it was in e3 2005, and the thing is that the graphics were pretty good for that time which means that the game was in developement for a good while and it was also on nearly finalized hardware for the 180, now do you also remember the original release date for the GOW title; because i sure do it was supposed to release on the launch of the 180, now tell me how the heck did the game get pushed all the way back to the lauch gate of the ps3 (ironic). That is much developement time and extra time for graphics that are middle gen and not near next gen.

2. Developement costs. Do you really wanna know how much microsoft spent for this game? Ill tell you first for the game itself 11 million, then for the unreal 3 engine usage cost a wopping 32 million, then for the graphic chip memory increase that microsoft just announced that epic cost them just to make for this game over 40 more million dollars, and who knows how much the CG cost, cause the 180 definately dont gat supercomputer hardware to produce its own cg and definately cant do CG synthesis so the cg was done by another team that heads supercomputer hardware developement like in final fantasy for previous playstation game consoles so the cost was definately over 100mil just for this game total.

3. Progression. Tell me how in the world did the game in e3 2005 not see that much of an increase from a nearly 1 and a 1/2 year extension, seriously the only difference that i saw was a few shines and the little unrealistic blood effect and again with the release just in time for ps3s release.

4. Glitches. Tell me why with a game that had a good 2 years plus on hardware that epic games is native to with a 100 million dollar budget, custom graphic chip(we will get to this soon), coaching along the way by microsft even with all that such long time in developement and extension the game still managed to have glitches, man please.

5. Game length. Tell me why in the world that a game with the massive budget nearly 5 times killzone cost came to a game with a total of 5 hours, if you ask me that was a waste of a game, come on now it has to have expansion packs, give me a break, all that time if the game came out they had to have been suckin the system dry tryin to push out every ounce of power the machine had and more. Deal with it 180 fans

6. Number of people on screen. Please let me know why you talk such trash about resistance when the GOW title only contains at most 5 people on screen including enemies and alies and your own character, when resistance has over 100, with so many things happening on screen at the same time, incredible physics, and the game is soo much longer, much more weapons. Know your machines limit

7. Level Sizes. Explain to me why the levels are so small, the draw distance is incredibly small, especially compared to games like Lair and Resistance.

8. Epic games DID say so. Dont know what site you went to but every site that i've visited the head of the epic developement team stated that they pushed the machine past its limit, duh that is why there is glitches on a game that was over 2 years in developement on true 180 hardware.

9. Bill Gates own words. Old Bill stated a while ago a little before the GOW title even was released he said, "this is what the 180 was built for." Now if you cant decipher what that means then i will it means the game at this little level of graphics is all that the 180 is made to withstand. But even still there was also nearly 1 and 1/2 extra year of developement.

10. Epic Games request. Epic games requested a memory increase for the graphics chip just for this game.

11. Sequel. Why has no sequel been announced for this game? I'll tell you why:

-first there will be little or no difference to the first
-second there will be even more glitches

if the graphics are increased there will be diar sacrifices that things from the first game will vanish

-first the blood effect will either be gone or seriously downgraded
-second the system will most definately overheat
-third even less people on screen
-fourth even smaller levels
-fifth even higher budget
-sixth wont come out until 2009
-seventh Rings of Death more often
-eighth even shorter game than the first
-ninth amazing never before seen loading screens, take a nap come back theres your game and reapeat through every level.
if graphics are reduced

-first longer game
-lower developement cost
-more people on screen with horrible polygon count, will look like paper mario.
-less glitches, but will still remain
-less risk of overheating

if game is lengthened

-first graphics will be incredibly reduced outta middle gen into last gen.
-blood effect long gone
-way less people on screen
-incredible loading screens
-budget will equal michael jordans career fortune

well if you cant tell that your 180 is maxed out because of all of the above resons something is wrong with your present ego, but sony will fix that this e3 you will never use gow after e3 not in a ps3 forum, resistance didnt use 17% of ps3s power it used 17% of 2 of cells processors and was all rendered using the RSX only with no Edge Tools, and motorstorm used 10-15% of 3 of the cells processors and rendering was done on Rsx with no assistance with the cell no edge tools note that all these games and games currently out dont and havent used the rsx synthesis for graphics rendering and havent even had the use of edge tools, the true NEXT Gen will come when ps3s RSX/CELL synthesis is utilized trust and believe you and i will be seeing cutscene graphics in game, and later 4d that will happen i would go into why but that is toooooo much writing but it is also way to early to write off the ps3, the sales of the ps3 will Launch when the generational gap is implemented you can guarantee it, the thing is microsoft knows it why dont you, and on the case of the wiik of course its selling it is very cheap so cheap i could save up my lunch money alone and buy one cash, a low income family would more than likely definately choose the wiik over the ps3, the only problem is that the wii is even wiiker than the 180 you may think that they will follow in ps2s footsteps but the thing is that what games are there for wiik ZELda (on gamecube), and Wiik sports, and Metroid, and later on Smash Bros. the thing is that while the ps2 wasnt as powerful as the xbox and gaycube (maybe) because the ps2 is still going graphics are yet improving on the ps2, the ps2 wasnt horribly weaker than weakbox1 and the gaycube the wiik aint even nowhere near the 180 so what chance do it have in runnin a race with something beyond a supercomputer, proof for you cell(supecomputer), then RSX(mega graphics chip did the graphics of motorstorm all by itself with no edge tools), and then blue ray(extremely smart idea by sony to add a next gen movie format to handle cg in game and then 4d later on the time is comming for the real next gen, the next gen dont start till sony say so.

Not including launch numbers...the 360 overall is still selling more than the ps3. Many developers agree that the ps3 is just a mess. The 6axix is a joke. And ps3 games are failing to achieve greatness. Resistace and Motorstorm??? Just average. The ps3s best game is a 15 month old 360 game. In the same time period when the 360 came out and it already had a high number of high rated games.

The hardcore fanboys have already bought thier ps3s and now nobody is buying it. The biggest news for the ps3 this year has been talk about folding, home, or lil big planet (which looks like kung fu chaos for the original xbox) WHERE ARE THE BIG TITLES????? GOW is 8-10 hours long...Resistance is only 10-12 hours long. The AI is tougher on GOW...The AI is laughable on Resistance...Resistance has 100 people on screen at once. Dead Rising has hundreds of people(zombies), 99 nights has thousands. And the 360 has a lil gem coming out next year named Huxley that will have 10,000 people playing multiplayer. Know your machines limit!!!!!

actually the 180 sales period are incredibly horrible if you truely think about the lifecycle of the 180 i'll explain:

1. the 180 launched all alone with no one else, that was a giant head start for under 10 million, ps3 is killing 180 for beating them that bad for this time last year.

2. one of their bombs have been dropped, Glitches of WARE and hasnt changed much.

3. bought into sony original exclusives, and people have still not changed sides.

4. ps3 cost up to 200 more than the 180 and is beating the 180 this time last year.

5. sony aint displayed the ps3s true power yet at all only some of it on tech demos.

6. many heavy hitters on the way for ps3, check wikipedia

7. no rumble for ps3 and is still selling more than 180 this time last year.

Dude, what I ment was PS3 blu-ray drive is going to be old. There are several other players coming up soon that happens to be faster too.

HD-DVD for xbox is not integrated, MS can easily offer updated one if they have to. Anyhow, I prefer blu-ray and if I ever get one it is going to be pure player instead of PS3. If I ever buy PS3 it will be just because it has finally got some cool games that really beat 360 and are MUST HAVE.. which is not the case atm.
