PS3 Slim Too Late But NOT Too Little

Excerpt from article:

"Within of second of the PS3 Slim being announced the clicking of keys could be heard echoing throughout the internets. Fanboys were busy writing articles to attract traffic to their website. Both sides were taken and a line in the sand was drawn. Was the Slim going to take over and finally become the tool that would destroy the evil empire that is Microsoft? Or was the truth on the other side."

Im just going to lean back and watch how all this is going to unfold.

Those who are expecting the PS3 to outsell the 360 by 2:1 are completely delusional.

At the very best the PS3 will outsell the 360 by the same margin the 360 has been outselling the PS3 in 2009 or a bit more.

And its going to be like dat till the end of this gen: that is 1 year the 360's on top then, the next year the PS3 and so on and so on.

I think its simply the excitement that is making you guys see "skew".

I really cant wait to see the August and October sales for the PS3 and 360 so that you can come down to earth a bit when you'll see that the PS3 outsold the 360 by the same margin the 360 is doing right now.

saint_john_paul_ii5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

"At the very best the PS3 will outsell the 360 by the same margin the 360 has been outselling the PS3 in 2009 or a bit more."

In other words, outsell them 2 to 1.

do you actually believe people are going to buy a console that continues to break on them?

PS3 $300

Xbox 360 Elite- $300

Wii-$250

If i was a smart consumer, which one should I pick?

Price was the only barrier that didnt allow sony to sell tons of PS3s to its consumers. Now that the Price Dropped to Sub-$300, its not a barrier anymore.

BTW, what year are we in with the PS3's Lifecycle? 6? no. more like 2 3/4 years into its lifecyle.

But Hey, thanks for reminding us as to why companies like Nintendo beat Sega back in the 90s.

Cold 20005365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Things simply aren't that simple, otherwise the Ipod wouldnt be n°1, nor would Nokia, and the list goes on.

MSFT have been selling a console with a 33% failure rate, pay to play online and only a DVD drive for 3 years now and have been quite successful at it.

Like I said I'll simply lean back and quietly wait for the charts to roll in.

"Just wait" ^^

saint_john_paul_ii5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

look. August numbers are going to show the 360 leading. I know that. But you dont think September numbers arent going to prove the opposite? we will see.

"MSFT have been selling a console with a 33% failure rate, pay to play online and only a DVD drive for 3 years now and have been quite successful at it"

Correction: Microsoft has been selling a $300 console with a 33% failure rate, pay to play online and only a DVD drive for 3 years now while its competition was too expensive for people to buy, especially in this recession.

2008 saw the PS3 outselling the 360 (sometimes at a 2-1 rate) until September of 2008, when the price cut was imposed on the 360 on all skus. they cut the price Twice last year. $50 for the spring and $50 for the fall.

Didn't see that comming!

deadreckoning6665365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Cold's right. PS3 likely won't leave third place, but that doesn't mean it won't do extremely well.

@Pope- Thats just it! The consumer ISN'T that smart. If consumers were "smart" the Wii wouldn't be the best selling games console and 360 sales would have been plummeting drastically. No ones denying that the PS3 is the best console this gen, its just that casual consumers don;t understand that as well as we do.

Information Minister5365d ago

It would be most wise to remove your comment. Otherwise, me and my friends shall pay a visit to you and your family and attach electrodes to your b... Oh wait... I forgot, we don't do that anymore.

Mental note: must find new way to punish people.

ps921175365d ago

What I hear about stores going out of stocks, I think it's safe to assume that it will sell extremely well. Though it's an even safer bet to assume that this guy has a 360 up his ***.

CrazzyMan5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Who has come back from future???

It`s definitely NOT too late for PS3 to catch x360 sales in EVERY region.
PS3 may not catch Wii... BUT it still has a potential to sell over 100 mln. units LTD.
Come on, PS3 is only 50$ more, than a Wii. Every GAMER now should buy it.

Maybe it`s also too late for a GT5? a 10 mln. juggernaut?
Do NOT doubt PLAYSTATION brand POWER and 299$ Mass Market price. =)

Corepred45365d ago

"Things simply aren't that simple, otherwise the Ipod wouldnt be n°1, nor would Nokia, and the list goes on. "

what are you talking about? ipod would be number 1 regardless because it is a great dependable entertainment device, don't malfunction easily, and have great features. pretty much like the ps3! lol

da720izcumin5365d ago

guess what game will top september sales....
HALO
meaning the 360 is gonna lead in hardware sales that month as well, ps3 haz no games this holiday season except for uncharted 2 n ratchet n blank....

saint_john_paul_ii5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

"ps3 haz no games this holiday season except for uncharted 2 n ratchet n blank...."

-U2
-R&C ACIT
-NGS2
-Demon Souls

Halo doesnt revolve around the globe.

especially in Japan were Final Fantasy is bigger than Halo, so guess what, you fail.

i could of given you some credit if splinter cell was set to release in 2009, but it got delayed.

Information Minister5365d ago

I bet this was your reaction when Sony announced the slim.

darthv725365d ago

You said the truth there. People buy what they want based on the perceived entertainment value they are looking for. Casuals wont be buying the ps3. They flock to the wii. Casuals buying the ps3 would be for the blu but wait...they did that at first. Now there are cheaper blu players. Casuals dont buy the ps3 for the free online because they are to casual. sony sees the casual market as something they need to go after now..a little late if I do say.

At least ms has been making strides to cater to the casuals while not totally turning their backs on the core. The consumer will buy the wii then the 360 and finally the ps3. It is sort of the evolution of the casual to core. You start off small and then evolve to more flashy hd gaming and finally the whole hd package with movies/games.

whothedog5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

I must be at the wrong site, I thought this was a gaming site, but by everyone's comments it seems I stumbled onto a site with a bunch of marketing gurus.

FamilyGuy5365d ago

Well I doubt that, even in the U.S. 360 will loose august sales number comparisons.

chaosatom5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

You just created that account because of me??????????

I feel so honored.

ChozenWoan5365d ago

As many as they can make.

Everyone I know plans on getting one now that the PS3 is $300, some of them plan on getting one or more as gifts for others. The PS3 is now at a price where most people can afford to get one with just the money they have from one paycheck, which is the perfect price point for this economy. So from now to Jan first, expect PS3s to be first come first served as they are going to sell like hotcakes.

Don't be surprised when PS3 jumps past Xbox360 and starts breathing down Wii's neck by this time next year... provided they can manufacture them fast enough.

thesummerofgeorge5364d ago

Ps3 can do no right. The media finds faults in the ps3 and ridicules it, and when Sony responds and improves upon things or lowers its price, it's too little too late. These clowns can literally gargle my balls.

31 million 360s + 24 million PS3s + 53 million Wiis = 108 million this gen.

25 million xboxs + 132 million PS2s + 21 million Wiis = 177 million last gen.

Around 69 million consumers left. I am not even including all the new audience that Wii alone has brought up.

So yeah, it's a little too late.

pure pwnage245365d ago

theres still a lot more people because a lot of people bought wiis as gym equipment

presto7175365d ago

Hello people saying its over for the 2.5 year old ps3 is like saying that the ps2 was over when it was only 2 and a half years old back in early 2003.

Now come on. Am I the only person that thinks that last gen did not end in 2003? For goodness sake. Enough with all this gloom and doom talk. It just makes you sound retarded.

falcon5365d ago

lets seen if it is late, when GT5 comes out... MS will eat dust.

chaosatom5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

It not late for the PS3 since there are still 69 million ppl left.

-Mezzo-5365d ago

at least 360 fanboys cant complain about the price.im getting it even do i already have a ps3

202,914 per month to catch it by Jan 2013. 46,826 per week.
156,971 per month to catch it by Jan 2014. 36,224 per week.

Current rate is: -51,873 per month
Avge for last 6 mths
Negative number means 360 is still outselling PS3 by that amount per month on avge

Lazarus695365d ago

@Kill Crow,i thought the XBOX360 only outsold the PS3 by 190,000 in the last six months. So i'm wondering how it's suddenly been outsold by 300,000 in the last six months.Care to explain how you got those numbers?

When Sony says it's too late.

Cold 20005365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Well Sony said too that people would get 2 jobs to buy a PS3.

Look what happened: its the PS3 3rd year (well 2 and 1/2) and got its 2nd price cut... (yep nobody got 2 jobs like Sony said)

It will be too late when the consumers choose so, like they chose that the Dreamcast had to die, or that 600eu was too much (hence the price cut to 400$) etc etc.

Its the consumers that choose if its too late, too little, too much or whatever. Not Sony or MSFT.

njr5365d ago

LOL, I didn't think Sony realized at the time about the recession. I'm still not able to find a job, let alone two! Somehow I managed to get a PS3 though.

INehalemEXI5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Japan actually was in a recession awhile longer then US , euro etc. It seems to be rebounding a bit earlier too. Sony just makes long term plans and sticks to them as best as possible.

Jazz41085365d ago

This is just a fact so please no disagrees on the truth. I work at GameStop and since the Ps3 price droppped we have sold one ps3, 4 wi's and drum roll 6 abox 360's, and I work in a non partial store.

rockleex5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

And its also a fact that I work for Microsoft.

It turns out Microsoft will *drumrolls* shut down their Xbox division starting tomorrow.

Seriously, its a fact! Believe me, I'm telling you! No disagrees! Its the truth! >_<

ravinash5365d ago

I think Sony do factor in a recession into their plans.
Because usally they seem to occur every 10 years or so, about the same as their console cycle.

if its too late for the PS3, then why is it when i went to my nearest Gamestop in NYC, I asked for PSN cards, and they said it was sold out because the people who bought them, bought them with their PS3s which were sold out within a day because of the price cut. They said they restocked today and they sold out.

Why does it matter? too late for what?

the slim means millions more will now jump on the Sony train and enjoy some incredible exclusives this year and each here after - I'm sure this will have an impact on sales to some extent, but does it mean Sony failed this gen if it sells a few million less by the time it ends in 7 years? no.

hamsterfist5365d ago

The larger point is it is too late for Sony to catch Microsoft but it certainly is not too little for them to try. I am tired of all the super negative or super positive articles. Especially when the sky is not falling, but the roses aren't blooming either.

morganfell5365d ago

Another ridiculous Sony is doomed despite a history of 10 year life cycles. Well that site is doomed. Time for the Lame button.

hamsterfist5365d ago

Morganfell you did not even bother reading the article or even the title for that matter. It was a response to the Sony is completely doomed articles. Please take a reading class at your High School.

morganfell5365d ago

These too little too late stories, or a lot too late or vice versa are utterly ridiculous and no way to up the currency or viability of one's site and opinion.

besides, if you are going to express an opinion, and a ridiculous one at that then you simply have zero grounds for complaint when what you deem to be ridiculous is leveled at you as well.

Brock Danger5365d ago

It's an editorial response, and the first sensible one I've read since the announcement.

At the writer thought about it and presented a logical outcome as opposed to the ridiculous forbes articles and what not, I guess I'd be silly for thinking even the mighty morganfell might appreciate some logic.

morganfell5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

No, I simply disagree to the nth degree with his supposition. With a 10 year life span there is hardly any logic in his findings. Correction - There is NO logic.

It is too late for Sony to catch Microsoft? Really? That is simply absurd and there is zero reason why anyone of even minimal reasoning ability should find favor with such nonsense.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia2d ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator2d ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies3d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken3d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing694d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing694d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt3d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken3d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
